Polynomial stability of a coupled wave-heat network
Abstract: We study the long-time asymptotic behaviour of a topologically non-trivial network of wave and heat equations. By analysing the simpler wave and the heat networks separately, and then applying recent results for abstract coupled systems, we establish energy decay at the rate $t^{-4}$ as $t\to\infty$ for all classical solutions.

Stability of abstract coupled systems
Abstract: We study stability of abstract differential equations coupled by means of a general algebraic condition. Our approach is based on techniques from operator theory and systems theory, and it allows us to study coupled systems by exploiting properties of the components, which are typically much simpler to analyse. Operationalizing Assurance Cases for Data Scientists: A Showcase of Concepts and Tooling in the Context of Test Data Quality for Machine Learning
Abstract: Assurance Cases (ACs) are an established approach in safety engineering to argue quality claims in a structured way. In the context of quality assurance for Machine Learning (ML)-based software components, ACs are also being discussed and appear promising. Tools for operationalizing ACs do exist, yet mainly focus on supporting safety engineers on the system level. However, assuring the quality of… ▽ More

Some developments around the Katznelson-Tzafriri theorem
Abstract: This paper is a survey article on developments arising from a theorem proved by Katznelson and Tzafriri in 1986 showing that $\lim_{n\to\infty} \|T^n(I-T)\| =0$ if $T$ is a power-bounded operator on a Banach space and $σ(T) \cap \T \subseteq \{1\}$. Many variations and consequences of the original theorem have been proved subsequently, and we provide an account of this branch of operator theory.

Abstract: I discuss the possibility of topological defect solutions in field theories containing a tensor field which spontaneously breaks Lorentz symmetry. I find that for theories of a tensor with rank r <= 5 and for which the vacuum manifold consists of the tensors whose "square" is some constant value, only three types of tensor (vectors, antisymmetric two-tensors, and symmetric two-tensors) have the ap… ▽ More

A monopole solution in a Lorentz-violating field theory
Abstract: I present a topological defect solution that arises in a theory where Lorentz symmetry is spontaneously broken by a rank-two antisymmetric tensor field, and I discuss its observational signatures.

Generalized bumblebee models and Lorentz-violating electrodynamics
Abstract: The breaking of Lorentz symmetry via a dynamical mechanism, with a tensor field which takes on a non-zero expectation value in vacuum, has been a subject of significant research activity in recent years. In certain models of this type, the perturbations of the "Lorentz-violating field" about this background may be identified with known forces. I present the results of applying this interpretatio… ▽ More

Vector models of gravitational Lorentz symmetry breaking
Abstract: Spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking can occur when the dynamics of a tensor field cause it to take on a non-zero expectation value in vacuo, thereby providing one or more "preferred directions" in spacetime. Couplings between such fields and spacetime curvature will then affect the dynamics of the metric, leading to interesting gravitational effects. Bailey & Kostelecky developed a post-Newton… ▽ More

Stability of spherically symmetric solutions in modified theories of gravity
Abstract: In recent years, a number of alternative theories of gravity have been proposed as possible resolutions of certain cosmological problems or as toy models for possible but heretofore unobserved effects. However, the implications of such theories for the stability of structures such as stars have not been fully investigated. We use our "generalized variational principle", described in a previous w… ▽ More

A general variational principle for spherically symmetric perturbations in diffeomorphism covariant theories
Abstract: We present a general method for the analysis of the stability of static, spherically symmetric solutions to spherically symmetric perturbations in an arbitrary diffeomorphism covariant Lagrangian field theory. Our method involves fixing the gauge and solving the linearized gravitational field equations to eliminate the metric perturbation variable in terms of the matter variables. In a wide clas… ▽ More

Modelling Space with an Atom of Quantum Geometry
Abstract: Within the context of loop quantum gravity there are several operators which measure geometry quantities. This work examines two of these operators, volume and angle, to study quantum geometry at a single spin network vertex - ``an atom of geometry.'' Several aspects of the angle operator are examined in detail including minimum angles, level spacing, and the distribution of angles. The high spi… ▽ More

Angle and Volume Studies in Quantized Space
Abstract: The search for a quantum theory of gravity is one of the major challenges facing theoretical physics today. While no complete theory exists, a promising avenue of research is the loop quantum gravity approach. In this approach, quantum states are represented by spin networks, essentially graphs with weighted edges. Since general relativity predicts the structure of space, any quantum theory of g… ▽ More
