The ferroelectric nematic phase (N$_{\text{F}}$) has quickly become the most studied system in liquid crystal research. In this work, we investigate the origin of such polar structure by studying a compound for which the N$_{\text{F}}$ phase directly follows the isotropic liquid phase on cooling, making it a particularly interesting system. Our experimental results evidence the presence of polar correlations already in the high-temperature phase, in which ferroelectric order can be induced under a sufficiently strong electric field. In the N$_{\text{F}}$ phase, molecular dynamics and polar correlations are investigated through detailed dynamic dielectric measurements, while second harmonic generation experiments evidence a large value of the main coefficient of the second order dielectric susceptibility tensor. Lastly, experimentally determined parameters are employed for calculations based on a recently proposed theoretical model for the stability of the N$_{\text{F}}$ phase. The obtained results suggest that the parallel alignment of dipoles is driven by a subtle interplay between electrostatic and excluded volume interactions.

Ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals exhibit unique non-linear optical properties, with the potential to become transformative materials for photonic applications. A promising direction relies on the fabrication of tailored polar orientational patterns via photoalignment, thus sha** the non-linear optical susceptibility through thin slabs of the ferroelectric fluid. Here, we explore the fabrication of 2D periodic SHG active arrays in ferroelectric nematic fluids, for different materials, cell thicknesses and motifs. Based on polarizing optical microscopy observations in combination with optical simulations, second harmonic generation microscopy and interferometry, the 3D structure of the motifs are revealed. Two different 2D periodic patterns are explored, showing that the balance between flexoelectric and electrostatic energy can lead to different domain structures, an effect which is rooted in the difference between the flexoelectric properties of the materials. It is shown that by combining the surface-inscribed alignment with different spontaneous degrees of twist, 2D SHG active arrays can be obtained in the micrometre scale, in which adjacent areas exhibit maximum SHG signals at opposite angles.

Alcohol ferrofluids made of ferrimagnetic barium hexaferrite (BHF) nanoplatelets (NPLs) form a unique example of a dipolar fluid - a liquid magnet. Its formation is induced at a high enough concentration of the NPLs. The key interactions between the NPLs are long-ranged dipolar magnetic and screened anisotropic electrostatic. Herein, we report the results on tuning the isotropic-nematic phase transition (i.e., the NPLs threshold concentration) in 1-butanol ferrofluids of BHF NPLs by affecting the interactions in the ferrofluids. The threshold concentration was determined by polarizing optical microscopy (POM) combined with a system for magnetic field manipulation and was in the range between 4.6 and 6.6 \% (v/v) depending on the ferrofluid. We observed that the threshold concentration decreased for 0.6 \% (v/v) with a larger mean diameter of the NPLs, up to 0.6 \% (v/v) with increased ionic strength of the ferrofluid, and for $\sim$ 2 \% (v/v) with higher saturation magnetization of the NPLs. We showed that by tuning the parameters affecting the ferrofluid's interplatelet interactions, we can alter the threshold concentration for the liquid magnet formation. The results elucidate the importance of a delicate balance between the repulsive screened electrostatic and attractive dipolar magnetic interactions for the liquid magnet formation.

Music popularity prediction has garnered significant attention in both industry and academia, fuelled by the rise of data-driven algorithms and streaming platforms like Spotify. This study aims to explore the predictive power of various machine learning models in forecasting song popularity using a dataset comprising 30,000 songs spanning different genres from 1957 to 2020. Methods: We employ Ordinary Least Squares (OLS), Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS), Random Forest, and XGBoost algorithms to analyse song characteristics and their impact on popularity. Results: Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression analysis reveals genre as the primary influencer of popularity, with notable trends over time. MARS modelling highlights the complex relationship between variables, particularly with features like instrumentalness and duration. Random Forest and XGBoost models underscore the importance of genre, especially EDM, in predicting popularity. Despite variations in performance, Random Forest emerges as the most effective model, improving prediction accuracy by 7.1% compared to average scores. Despite the importance of genre, predicting song popularity remains challenging, as observed variations in music-related features suggest complex interactions between genre and other factors. Consequently, while certain characteristics like loudness and song duration may impact popularity scores, accurately predicting song success remains elusive.

The recently discovered ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals have been reported to exhibit very large dielectric permittivity values. Here, we report a systematic investigation of the dielectric behavior of a prototypical ferroelectric nematogen by varying the thickness of the parallel capacitor measuring cell. While in the non-polar high temperature nematic phase results show only slight differences due to slight variations of the alignment, the measured permittivity values in the ferroelectric nematic phase show a linear dependence on the cell thickness. It is also shown that the characteristic relaxation frequency decreases inversely proportionally to the thickness. The results are discussed in terms of three different available models based on different underlying mechanisms, accounting for cancellation of the probe electric fields by polarization reorientation or by ionic charges, or based on a recently proposed continuous phenomenological model.

The mechano-electric transduction is observed in the frequency range 1-200 Hz via a simple demonstrator device. The liquid is placed into a deformable container with electrodes and the electric current induced by both periodic and irregular actuation of the container is examined. The experiments reveal a rich interplay of several distinct viscous mechano-electric phenomena, where both shape deformations and material flow cause changes in the electric polarization structure of a ferroelectric nematic liquid. The results show that the mechano-electric features of the material promise a considerable applicative perspective spanning from sensitive tactile sensors to energy harvesting devices.

Liquid crystals, with their ability of self-assembly, strong response to the electric field, and integrability into complex systems, are key materials in light beam manipulation. Recently discovered ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals also possess a considerable second-order optical nonlinearity, making them a perspective material for nonlinear optics. Their use as sources of quantum light could drastically extend the boundaries of photonic quantum technologies. However, spontaneous parametric down-conversion, the basic source of entangled photons, heralded single photons, and squeezed light, has been so far not observed in liquid crystals - or in any liquids or organic materials. Here, we implement spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal and demonstrate electric-field tunable broadband generation of entangled photons, with the efficiency comparable to that of the best nonlinear crystals. The emission rate and polarization state of photon pairs is dramatically varied by applying a few volts or twisting the molecular orientation along the sample. A liquid crystal source enables a new type of quasi-phasematching, which is based on molecular twist structure and is therefore reconfigurable for the desired spectral and polarization properties of photon pairs. Such sources promise to outperform standard nonlinear optical materials in terms of functionality, brightness and the tunability of the generated quantum state. The concepts developed here can be extended to complex topological structures, macroscopic devices, and multi-pixel tunable quantum light sources.

We have considered the estimate of the stress-strength parameter when the stress and strength components are statistically independent and follow PGE-1 distributions with distinct parameters. The point estimate of the stress-strength reliability is obtained using maximum likelihood method. This paper is about Dirichlet averages in the matrix-variate case or averages of functions over the Dirichlet measure in the complex domain. The classical power mean contains the harmonic mean, arithmetic mean and geometric mean (Hardy, Littlewood and Polya), which is generalized to $y$-mean by deFinetti and hypergeometric mean by Carlson, see the references herein. Carlson's hypergeometric mean is to average a scalar function over a real scalar variable type-1 Dirichlet measure and this in the current literature is known as Dirichlet average of that function. The idea is examined when there is a type-1 or type-2 Dirichlet density in the complex domain. Averages of several functions are computed in such Dirichlet densities in the complex domain. Dirichlet measures are defined when the matrices are Hermitian positive definite. Some applications are also discussed.

Among them, the remarkably large values of second order optical susceptibility encourage to exploit these new materials for non-linear photonic applications. Here we show that photopatterning of the alignment layer can be used to structure polarization patterns. To do so, we take advantage of the flexoelectric effect and design splay structures that geometrically define the polarization direction. We demonstrate the creation of periodic polarization structures and the possibility of guiding polarization by embedding splay structures in uniform backgrounds. The demonstrated capabilities of polarization patterning, open a promising new route for the design of ferroelectric nematic based photonic structures and their exploitation.

Sessile droplets of a ferroelectric nematic liquid crystalline material were exposed to surface electric fields produced by pyroelectric and photogalvanic (photovoltaic) effects in X-cut iron-doped lithium niobate crystals. The resulting dynamic processes were monitored by polarization optical (video)microscopy (POM). During heating/cooling cycles, at first, the droplets change their shape from spherical to extended ellipsoidal. Then they start to move rapidly along the surface electric field, i.e., along the crystal's polar axis (c-axis). During this motion, several droplets merge into running streams (tendrils) extending towards the edges of the top surface area. Finally, practically all liquid crystalline material is transported from the top surface to the side surfaces of the crystal. At stabilized temperature, laser illumination of the assembly causes dynamic processes that are localized to the illuminated area. Also, in this case, the LC droplets merge into several tendril-like formations that are preferentially oriented along the c-axis of the crystal. The pattern of tendrils fluctuates with time, but it persists as long as the illumination is present. In this case, the LC material is transported between the central and the edge region of the illuminated area.

We investigated the effect of a photovoltaic field generated on the surface of iron-doped lithium niobate crystals on droplets of a ferroelectric nematic liquid crystalline and a standard nematic liquid crystalline material deposited on this surface. When such assembly is illuminated with a laser beam, a wide range of dynamic phenomena are initiated. Droplets located outside the laser spot are dragged in the direction of the illuminated area, while droplets located inside the illuminated region tend to bridge each other and rearrange into tendril-like structures. In the ferroelectric nematic phase (NF) these processes take place via the formation of conical spikes evolving into jet streams, similar to the behavior of droplets of conventional dielectric liquids exposed to overcritical electric fields. However, in contrast to conventional liquids, the jet streams of the NF phase exhibit profound branching. In the nematic phase (N) of both the ferroelectric nematic and the standard nematic material, dynamic processes occur via smooth-edged continuous features typical for conventional liquids subjected to under-critical fields. The difference in dynamic behavior is attributed to the large increase of dielectric permittivity in the ferroelectric nematic phase with respect to the dielectric permittivity of the nematic phase.

In this Perspective, we give an overview of this emerging field by linking history and theoretical predictions to a general outlook of the development and properties of the materials exhibiting ferroelectric nematic phases. We will highlight the most relevant observations up-to-date, e.g., giant dielectric permittivity values, polarization values an order of magnitude larger than in classical ferroelectric liquid crystals, and nonlinear optical coefficients comparable to several ferroelectric solid materials. Key observations of anchoring and electro-optic behavior will also be examined. The collected contributions lead to a final discussion on open challenges in materials development, theoretical description, experimental explorations, and possible applications of the ferroelectric phases.

The recent discovery of the ferroelectric splay nematic phase has opened the door to experimental investigation of one of the most searched liquid crystal phases in decades, with high expectations for future applications. However, at this moment, there are more questions than answers. In this work, we examine the formation and structure of large polar nematic domains of the ferroelectric splay nematic material RM734 in planar liquid crystals cells with different aligning agents and specifications. We observe that confining surfaces have a strong influence over the formation of different types of domains, resulting in various twisted structures of the nematic director. For those cells predominantly showing mm-scale domains, we investigate the optical and second harmonic generation switching behaviour under applications of electric fields with a special focus on in-plane fields perpendicular to the confinement media rubbing direction. In order to characterize the underlying structure, the polar optical switching behaviour is reproduced using a simplified model together with Berreman calculations.

Polar nematic phases have been long-time predicted, but have only been experimentally realized recently. Synthesis of materials with nematic polar ordering at room temperature is certainly challenging and requires a deep understanding of its formation mechanisms, presently lacking. Here, we compare two materials of similar chemical structure and demonstrate that just a subtle change in the molecular structure enables denser packing of the molecules when they exhibit polar order, which shows that reduction of excluded volume is in the origin of the polar nematic phase. Additionally, we propose that molecular dynamics simulations are potent tools for molecular design in order to predict, identify and design materials showing the polar nematic phase and its precursor nematic phases.

In this paper, we explore the concept of adding learn-able slope and mean shift parameters to an activation function to improve the total response region. The characteristics of an activation function depend highly on the value of parameters. Making the parameters learn-able, makes the activation function more dynamic and capable to adapt as per the requirements of its neighboring layers. The introduced slope parameter is independent of other parameters in the activation function. The concept was applied to ReLU to develop Dual Line and DualParametric ReLU activation function. Evaluation on MNIST and CIFAR10 show that the proposed activation function Dual Line achieves top-5 position for mean accuracy among 43 activation functions tested with LENET4, LENET5, and WideResNet architectures. This is the first time more than 40 activation functions were analyzed on MNIST andCIFAR10 dataset at the same time. The study on the distribution of positive slope parameter beta indicates that the activation function adapts as per the requirements of the neighboring layers. The study shows that model performance increases with the proposed activation functions

Ferroelectric ordering in liquids is a fundamental question of physics. Here, we show that ferroelectric ordering of the molecules causes formation of recently reported splay nematic liquid-crystalline phase. As shown by dielectric spectroscopy, the transition between the uniaxial and the splay nematic phase has the characteristics of a ferroelectric phase transition, which drives an orientational ferroelastic transition via flexoelectric coupling. The polarity of the splay phase was proven by second harmonic generation (SHG) imaging, which additionally allowed for determination of the splay modulation period to be of the order of 5 - 10 microns, also confirmed by polarized optical microscopy. The observations can be quantitatively described by a Landau-de Gennes type of macroscopic theory.

A comparative experimental investigation of the dependence of second harmonic generation (SHG) on applied external voltage between the standard nematic liquid crystalline material and an analogue ferromagnetic nematic liquid crystalline material was performed by using a fundamental optical beam at 800 nm wavelength. For a ferromagnetic material, the dependence of SHG on an applied magnetic field was also examined. Three different polarization combinations of the fundamental and the second harmonic radiation were analysed. The SHG signal observed in the former material is attributed to a combination of electric field-induced SHG (EFISHG) and flexoelectric deformation-induced SHG, while SHG signal observed in the latter material is attributed solely to flexoelectric deformation-induced SHG. The obtained dependences of the SHG signal on the associated optical retardation show that in the most favourable polarization combination the two contributions generate about the same effective nonlinear optical susceptibility.

Several generalizations of the logistic distribution, and certain related models, are proposed by many authors for modeling various random phenomena such as those encountered in data engineering, pattern recognition, and reliability assessment studies. A generalized q-logistic distribution is discussed here in the light of pathway model, in which the new parameter q allows increased flexibility for modeling purpose. Also, we discuss different properties of the two generalizations of the q-logistic distributions, which can be used to model the data exhibiting a unimodal density having some skewness present. The first generalization is carried out using the basic idea of Azzalini and we call it as the skew q-logistic distribution. It is observed that the density function of the skew q-logistic distribution is always unimodal and log-concave in nature.

The main purpose of this paper is to introduce a new framework for generating lifetime distributions, called the Topp-Leone generated q-exponential family of distributions. Parameter estimation using maximum likelihood method and simulation results to assess effectiveness of the distribution are discussed. Different informative and non-informative priors are used to estimate the shape parameter of q extended Topp-Leone generated exponential distribution under normal approximation technique. We prove empirically the importance and flexibility of the new model in model building by using a real data set.

The influence of structural constraints on the relaxation dynamics of three polyurea networks with varying degree of crosslinking, has been studied by means of a thorough analysis of broadband dielectric spectroscopy measurements. Two different relaxation processes are observed, namely, a fast process involving the soft poly(propylene oxide) chains, and a slower and much broader process associated to the immediate surroundings of the hard crosslinkers. Microphase separation in soft and hard domains characterizes the systems in the presence of hydrogen bondings. In this case, different confinement conditions are explored by varying the soft chain length; overall, the so called 'adsorption' effects dominate. With respect to both cooperativity and rearrangement energy threshold in fast relaxation, it is found that the enhancement of configurational constraints is similar to cooling, but only on qualitative grounds. An upper bound of the hard domain's interface thickness, in which the slow relaxation is believed to take place, is estimated from the analysis of the fast relaxation in the system characterized by the highest degree of confinement, taking into account the results of the structural analysis. Drop** the hydrogen bonding mechanism, phase separation does not occur anymore and the configurational constraints at the ends of the soft chains are reduced, leaving just those imposed by the rigid crosslinkers. This leads to a significant increase in cooperativity, on approaching the glass transition, and to a complex behavior that is thoroughly discussed in comparison with those observed in the micro-segregated systems.

In the present work, a detailed analysis of the glassy behavior and the relaxation dynamics of the liquid crystal dimer α-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-yloxy)-ω-(1-pyrenimine-benzylidene-4'-oxy) heptane (CBO7O.Py) throughout both nematic and smectic A mesophases by means of broadband dielectric spectroscopy has been performed. CBO7O.Py shows three different dielectric relaxation modes and two glass transition (Tg) temperatures: the higher Tg is due to the freezing of the molecular motions responsible of the relaxation mode with the lowest frequency (μ1L); the lower Tg is due to the motions responsible of the two relaxation modes with highest frequencies (μ1H and μ2), which converge just at their corresponding Tg. It is shown how the three modes follow a critical-like description via the dynamic scaling model. The two modes with lowest frequencies (μ1L and μ1H) are cooperative in the whole range of the mesophases, whereas the highest frequency mode (μ2) is cooperative just below some cross-over temperature. In terms of fragility, at the glass transition, the ensemble (μ1H +μ2) presents a value of the steepness index and μ1L a different one, meaning that fragility is a property intrinsic of the molecular motion itself. Finally, the steepness index seem to have a universal behavior with temperature for the dielectric relaxation modes of liquid crystal dimers, being almost constant at high temperatures and increasing drastically when cooling the compound down to the glass transition from a temperature about (3/4)TNI.

Successful realization of ferromagnetic nematic liquid crystals has opened up the possibility to experimentally study a completely new set of fundamental physical phenomena. In this contribution we present a detailed investigation of some aspects of the static response and the complex dynamics of ferromagnetic liquid crystals under the application of an external magnetic field. Experimental results are then compared with a macroscopic model. Dynamics of the director were measured by optical methods and analyzed in terms of a theoretical macroscopic model. A dissipative cross-coupling coefficient describing the dynamic coupling between the two system order parameters, the magnetization and the nematic director, is needed to explain the results. In this contribution we examine the dependency of this coefficient on material parameters and the saturation magnetization and the liquid crystal host. Despite the complexity of the system, the theoretical description allows for a proper interpretation of the results and is connected to several microscopic aspects of the colloidal suspension.

Different liquid crystalline phases with long-range orientational but not positional order, so-called nematic phases, are scarce. It rarely occurs that a new nematic phase is discovered and such event is inevitably accompanied by a great interest. Here, we describe a transition from uniaxial to novel nematic phase characterized by a periodic splay modulation of the director. In this new nematic phase, defect structures not present in the uniaxial nematic are observed, which indicates that the new phase has lower symmetry than the ordinary nematic phase. The phase transition is weakly first order with a significant pretransitional behavior, which manifests as strong splay fluctuations. When approaching the phase transition, the splay nematic constant is unusually low and goes towards zero. Analogously to the transition from the uniaxial nematic to the twist-bend nematic phase, this transition is driven by instability towards splay orientational deformation, resulting in a periodically splayed structure. And, similarly, a Landau-de Gennes type of phenomenological theory can be used to describe the phase transition. The modulated splay phase is biaxial and antiferroelectric.

We investigate dynamic magneto-optic effects in a ferromagnetic nematic liquid crystal experimentally and theoretically. Experimentally we measure the magnetization and the phase difference of the transmitted light when an external magnetic field is applied. As a model we study the coupled dynamics of the magnetization, M, and the director field, n, associated with the liquid crystalline orientational order. We demonstrate that the experimentally studied macroscopic dynamic behavior reveals the importance of a dynamic cross-coupling between M and n. The experimental data are used to extract the value of the dissipative cross-coupling coefficient. We also make concrete predictions about how reversible cross-coupling terms between the magnetization and the director could be detected experimentally by measurements of the transmitted light intensity as well as by analyzing the azimuthal angle of the magnetization and the director out of the plane spanned by the anchoring axis and the external magnetic field. We derive the eigenmodes of the coupled system and study their relaxation rates. We show that in the usual experimental set-up used for measuring the relaxation rates of the splay-bend or twist-bend eigenmodes of a nematic liquid crystal one expects for a ferromagnetic nematic liquid crystal a mixture of at least two eigenmodes.

The pioneering realization of suspensions of ferroelectric nanoparticles in a nematic host was one of excellent contributions of Yuri Reznikov to the science of liquid crystals [Y. Reznikov et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 82 (2003) 191]. This achievement created great excitement as entailed the enhancement of materials dielectric properties and increase of the phase transition temperature between nematic and isotropic phase. In this contribution, we examine the spectrum of fundamental fluctuations in one of his ferroelectric suspensions by dynamic light scattering measurements, which gives insight into the coupling between the particles and the orientation of the liquid crystalline matrix. We set side by side these results with the equivalent ones obtained for the case of stable suspensions of ferromagnetic nanoplatelets in a nematic matrix showing macroscopic ferromagnetic ordering. The underlying origin of the difference between the particle-matrix coupling observed in both cases is discussed and its effect on the orientational fluctuations spectrum is compared.

Variation in genotypes may be responsible for differences in dispersal rates, directional biases, and growth rates of individuals. These traits may favor certain genotypes and enhance their spatio-temporal spreading into areas occupied by the less advantageous genotypes. We study how these factors influence the speed of spreading in the case of two competing genotypes and show that under the assumption of maintenance of spatially homogeneous total population the dynamics of the frequency of one of the genotypes is approximately described by the generalized Fisher-Kolmogorov-Petrovskii-Piskunov (FKPP) equation. This generalized FKPP equation with (nonlinear) frequency dependent diffusion and advection terms admits traveling wave solutions (fronts/clines) that characterize the invasion of the dominant genotype. Our existence results generalize the classical theory for traveling waves for the FKPP with constant coefficients. Moreover for the particular case of the quadratic (monostable) nonlinear growth-decay rate in the generalized FKPP we study in details the influence of the variance in diffusion and mean displacement rates of the two genotypes on the minimal wave propagation speed.

The pathway idea of Mathai (2005) is shown to be inferable from the maximization of a certain generalized entropy measure and established connections to outstanding problems in astronomy and physics. In this paper we proved that the generalized entropy of Mathai associated with diffusive processes grows linearly with the logarithm of time, and the rate of growth is indepen- dent of the generalized entropy parameter. We also proposed some results concerning images of generalized Bessel function under the pathway operator and its special cases including some trigonometric functions. Situations are listed where a generalized entropy of order ? leads to pathway models, exponential and power law behavior and related differential equations.

Pathway idea is a switching mechanism by which one can go from one functional form to another, and to yet another. It is shown that through a parameter $α$, called the pathway parameter, one can connect generalized type-1 beta family of densities, generalized type-2 beta family of densities, and generalized gamma family of densities, in the scalar as well as the matrix cases, also in the real and complex domains. It is shown that when the model is applied to physical situations then the current hot topics of Tsallis statistics and superstatistics in statistical mechanics become special cases of the pathway model, and the model is capable of capturing many stable situations as well as the unstable or chaotic neighborhoods of the stable situations and transitional stages. The pathway model is shown to be connected to generalized information measures or entropies, power law, likelihood ratio criterion or $λ-$criterion in multivariate statistical analysis, generalized Dirichlet densities, fractional calculus, Mittag-Leffler stochastic process, Krätzel integral in applied analysis, and many other topics in different disciplines. The pathway model enables one to extend the current results on quadratic and bilinear forms, when the samples come from Gaussian populations, to wider classes of populations.
