Algorithmic theories of randomness can be related to theories of probabilistic sequence prediction through the notion of a predictor, defined as a function which supplies lower bounds on initial-segment probabilities of infinite sequences. An infinite binary sequence $z$ is called unpredictable iff its initial-segment "redundancy" $n+\log p(z(n))$ remains sufficiently low relative to every effective predictor $p$. A predictor which maximizes the initial-segment redundancy of a sequence is called optimal for that sequence. It turns out that a sequence is random iff it is unpredictable. More generally, a sequence is random relative to an arbitrary computable distribution iff the distribution is itself an optimal predictor for the sequence. Here "random" can be taken in the sense of Martin-Löf by using weak criteria of effectiveness, or in the sense of Schnorr by using stronger criteria of effectiveness. Under the weaker criteria of effectiveness it is possible to construct a universal predictor which is optimal for all infinite sequences. This predictor assigns nonvanishing limit probabilities precisely to the recursive sequences. Under the stronger criteria of effectiveness it is possible to establish a law of large numbers for sequences random relative to a computable distribution, which may be useful as a criterion of "rationality" for methods of probabilistic prediction. A remarkable feature of effective predictors is the fact that they are expressible in the special form first proposed by Solomonoff. In this form sequence prediction reduces to assigning high probabilities to initial segments with short and/or numerous encodings. This fact provides the link between theories of randomness and Solomonoff's theory of prediction.

Using the entire BaBar $Υ(4S)$ data set, the first two-dimensional unbinned angular analysis of the semileptonic decay $\overline{B} \rightarrow D \ell^- \overlineν_\ell$ is performed, employing hadronic reconstruction of the tag-side $B$ meson from $Υ(4S)\to B\overline{B}$. Here, $\ell$ denotes the light charged leptons $e$ and $μ$. A novel data-driven signal-background separation procedure with minimal dependence on simulation is developed. This procedure preserves all multi-dimensional correlations present in the data. The expected $\sin^2θ_\ell$ dependence of the differential decay rate in the Standard Model is demonstrated, where $θ_\ell$ is the lepton helicity angle. Including input from the latest lattice QCD calculations and previously available experimental data, the underlying form factors are extracted using both model-independent (BGL) and dependent (CLN) methods. Comparisons with lattice calculations show flavor SU(3) symmetry to be a good approximation in the $B_{(s)}\to D_{(s)}$ sector. Using the BGL results, the CKM matrix element $|V_{cb}|=(41.09\pm 1.16)\times 10^{-3}$ and the Standard Model prediction of the lepton-flavor universality violation variable $\mathcal{R}(D)=0.300\pm 0.004$, are extracted. The value of $|V_{cb}|$ from $\overline{B} \rightarrow D \ell^- \overlineν_\ell$ tends to be higher than that extracted using $\overline{B} \rightarrow D \ell^- \overlineν_\ell$. The Standard Model $\mathcal{R}(D)$ calculation is at a $1.97σ$ tension with the latest HFLAV experimental average.

A new mechanism has been proposed to simultaneously explain the presence of dark matter and the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe. This scenario predicts exotic $B$ meson decays into a baryon and a dark sector anti-baryon ($ψ_D$) with branching fractions accessible at $B$ factories. We present a search for $B \rightarrow Λψ_D$ decays using data collected by the $BABAR$ experiment at SLAC. This reaction is identified by fully reconstructing the accompanying $B$ meson and requiring the presence of a single $Λ$ baryon in the remaining particles. No significant signal is observed, and bounds on the $B \rightarrow Λψ_D$ branching fraction are derived in the range $0.13 - 5.2\times 10^{-5}$ for $1.0 < m_{ψ_D} < 4.2$ GeV/$c^{2}$. These results set strong constraints on the parameter space allowed by the theory.

We show how factoring the RNN-T's output distribution can significantly reduce the computation cost and power consumption for on-device ASR inference with no loss in accuracy. With the rise in popularity of neural-transducer type models like the RNN-T for on-device ASR, optimizing RNN-T's runtime efficiency is of great interest. While previous work has primarily focused on the optimization of RNN-T's acoustic encoder and predictor, this paper focuses the attention on the joiner. We show that despite being only a small part of RNN-T, the joiner has a large impact on the overall model's runtime efficiency. We propose to utilize HAT-style joiner factorization for the purpose of skip** the more expensive non-blank computation when the blank probability exceeds a certain threshold. Since the blank probability can be computed very efficiently and the RNN-T output is dominated by blanks, our proposed method leads to a 26-30% decoding speed-up and 43-53% reduction in on-device power consumption, all the while incurring no accuracy degradation and being relatively simple to implement.

Meanwhile neural modeling approaches require quality large-scale spoken-written pair examples in the same or similar domain as the ASR system (in-domain data), to train. Both these approaches require costly and complex annotations. In this paper, we present a data augmentation technique that effectively generates rich spoken-written numeric pairs from out-of-domain textual data with minimal human annotation. We empirically demonstrate that ITN model trained using our data augmentation technique consistently outperform ITN model trained using only in-domain data across all numeric surfaces like cardinal, currency, and fraction, by an overall accuracy of 14.44%.

Alternating projection onto convex sets (POCS) provides an iterative procedure to find a signal that satisfies two or more convex constraints when the sets intersect. For nonintersecting constraints, the method of simultaneous projections produces a minimum mean square error (MMSE) solution. In certain cases, a minimax solution is more desirable. Generating a minimax solution is possible using dilated POCS. The minimax solution uses morphological dilation of nonintersecting signal convex constraints. The sets are progressively dilated to the point where there is intersection at a minimax solution. Examples are given contrasting the MMSE and minimax solutions in problems of tomographic reconstruction of images. Dilated POCS adds a new imaging modality for image synthesis. Lastly, morphological erosion of signal sets is suggested as a method to shrink the overlap when sets intersect at more than one point.

We summarize recent results and ongoing activities in mathematical algorithms and computer science methods related to proton computed tomography (pCT) and intensity-modulated particle therapy (IMPT) treatment planning. Proton therapy necessitates a high level of delivery accuracy to exploit the selective targeting imparted by the Bragg peak. For this purpose, pCT utilizes the proton beam itself to create images. The technique works by sending a low-intensity beam of protons through the patient and measuring the position, direction, and energy loss of each exiting proton. The pCT technique allows reconstruction of the volumetric distribution of the relative stop** power (RSP) of the patient tissues for use in treatment planning and pre-treatment range verification. We have investigated new ways to make the reconstruction both efficient and accurate. Better accuracy of RSP also enables more robust inverse approaches to IMPT. For IMPT, we developed a framework for performing intensity-modulation of the proton pencil beams. We expect that these developments will lead to additional project work in the years to come, which requires a regular exchange between experts in the fields of mathematics, computer science, and medical physics. We have initiated such an exchange by organizing annual workshops on pCT and IMPT algorithm and technology developments. This report is, admittedly, tilted toward our interdisciplinary work and methods. We offer a comprehensive overview of results, problems, and challenges in pCT and IMPT with the aim of making other scientists wanting to tackle such issues and to strengthen their interdisciplinary collaboration by bringing together cutting-edge know-how from medicine, computer science, physics, and mathematics to bear on medical physics problems at hand.

The survey is dedicated to a celebrated series of quantitave results, developed by the Lithuanian school of probability, on the normal approximation for a real-valued random variable. The key ingredient is a bound on cumulants of the type $|κ_j(X)| \leq j!^{1+γ} /Δ^{j-2}$, which is weaker than Cramér's condition of finite exponential moments. We give a self-contained proof of some of the "main lemmas" in a book by Saulis and Statulevičius (1989), and an accessible introduction to the Cramér-Petrov series. In addition, we explain relations with heavy-tailed Weibull variables, moderate deviations, and mod-phi convergence. We discuss some methods for bounding cumulants such as summability of mixed cumulants and dependency graphs, and briefly review a few recent applications of the method of cumulants for the normal approximation.

In this work, to measure the accuracy and efficiency for a latency-controlled streaming automatic speech recognition (ASR) application, we perform comprehensive evaluations on three popular training criteria: LF-MMI, CTC and RNN-T. In transcribing social media videos of 7 languages with training data 3K-14K hours, we conduct large-scale controlled experimentation across each criterion using identical datasets and encoder model architecture. We find that RNN-T has consistent wins in ASR accuracy, while CTC models excel at inference efficiency. Moreover, we selectively examine various modeling strategies for different training criteria, including modeling units, encoder architectures, pre-training, etc. Given such large-scale real-world streaming ASR application, to our best knowledge, we present the first comprehensive benchmark on these three widely used training criteria across a great many languages.

Using the photon-ion merged-beams technique at a synchrotron light source, we have measured relative cross sections for single and up to five-fold photoionization of Fe$^{2+}$ ions in the energy range 690--920 eV. This range contains thresholds and resonances associated with ionization and excitation of $2p$ and $2s$ electrons. Calculations were performed to simulate the total absorption spectra. The theoretical results show very good agreement with the experimental data, if overall energy shifts of up to 2.5 eV are applied to the calculated resonance positions and assumptions are made about the initial experimental population of the various levels of the Fe$^{2+}$([Ar]$3d^6$) ground configuration. Furthermore, we performed extensive calculations of the Auger cascades that result when an electron is removed from the $2p$ subshell of Fe$^{2+}$. These computations lead to a better agreement with the measured product-charge-state distributions as compared to earlier work. We conclude that the $L$-shell absorption features of low-charged iron ions are useful for identifying gas-phase iron in the interstellar medium and for discriminating against the various forms of condensed-phase iron bound to composite interstellar dust grains.

It is essential for dialogue-based spatial reasoning systems to maintain memory of historical states of the world. In addition to conveying that the dialogue agent is mentally present and engaged with the task, referring to historical states may be crucial for enabling collaborative planning (e.g., for planning to return to a previous state, or diagnosing a past misstep). In this paper, we approach the problem of spatial memory in a multi-modal spoken dialogue system capable of answering questions about interaction history in a physical blocks world setting. This work builds upon a full spatial question-answering pipeline consisting of a vision system, speech input and output mediated by an animated avatar, a dialogue system that robustly interprets spatial queries, and a constraint solver that derives answers based on 3-D spatial modelling. The contributions of this work include a symbolic dialogue context registering knowledge about discourse history and changes in the world, as well as a natural language understanding module capable of interpreting free-form historical questions and querying the dialogue context to form an answer.

A study of the two body decays $B^\pm\rightarrow X_{c\bar c}K^\pm$, where X$_{c\bar c}$ refers to one charmonium state, is reported by BaBar collaboration using a data sample of 424 fb$^{-1}$. The absolute determination of branching fractions for these decays are significantly improved compared to previous BaBaR measurements. Evidence is found for the decay $B^+\rightarrow X(3872)K^+$ at the $3σ$ level. The absolute branching fraction ${\cal B}(B^+\rightarrow X(3872)K^+) = (2.1\pm0.6({\rm stat})\pm0.3({\rm syst}))\times 10^{-4}$ is measured for the first time. It follows that ${\cal B}(X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^-)=(4.1\pm1.3)\%$, supporting the hypothesis of a molecular component for this resonance.

In the current note we prove a quenched Central Limit Theorem for the magnetization for $p$ satisfying $pN \to \infty$ in the high-temperature regime $β<1$. We also show a non-standard Central Limit Theorem for $p^4N^3 \to \infty$ at the critical temperature $β=1$. For $p^4N^3 \to 0$ we obtain a Gaussian limiting distribution for the magnetization. Finally, on the critical line $p^4N^3 \to c$ the limiting distribution for the magnetization contains a quadratic component as well as a $x^4$-term. Hence, at $β=1$ we observe a phase transition in $p$ for the fluctuations of the magnetization.

The blocks world is a classic toy domain that has long been used to build and test spatial reasoning systems. Despite its relative simplicity, tackling this domain in its full complexity requires the agent to exhibit a rich set of functional capabilities, ranging from vision to natural language understanding. There is currently a resurgence of interest in solving problems in such limited domains using modern techniques. In this work we tackle spatial question answering in a holistic way, using a vision system, speech input and output mediated by an animated avatar, a dialogue system that robustly interprets spatial queries, and a constraint solver that derives answers based on 3-D spatial modeling. The contributions of this work include a semantic parser that maps spatial questions into logical forms consistent with a general approach to meaning representation, a dialog manager based on a schema representation, and a constraint solver for spatial questions that provides answers in agreement with human perception. These and other components are integrated into a multi-modal human-computer interaction pipeline.

This greatly simplifies training and inference and hence makes RNN-T a desirable choice for ASR systems. In this work, we investigate use of RNN-T in applications that require a tune-able latency budget during inference time. We also improved the decoding speed of the originally proposed RNN-T beam search algorithm. We evaluated our proposed system on English videos ASR dataset and show that neural RNN-T models can achieve comparable WER and better computational efficiency compared to a well tuned hybrid ASR baseline.

All experiments are conducted on the public LibriSpeech corpus. The proposed Transformer-Transducer outperforms neural transducer with LSTM/BLSTM networks and achieved word error rates of 6.37 % on the test-clean set and 15.30 % on the test-other set, while remaining streamable, compact with 45.7M parameters for the entire system, and computationally efficient with complexity of O(T), where T is input sequence length.

A total of 424 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected at the center-of-mass energy of the $Υ$(4S) resonance is used in this study, corresponding to a sample of ${(471 \pm 3) \times 10^{6}}$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs. Signal $B^- \to Λ{\overline p} ν{\overlineν}$ candidates are identified by first fully reconstructing a $B^+$ decay in one of many possible exclusive decays to hadronic final states, then examining detector activity that is not associated with this reconstructed $B^+$ decay for evidence of a signal $B^- \to Λ{\overline p} ν{\overlineν}$ decay. The data yield is found to be consistent with the expected background contribution under a null signal hypothesis, resulting in an upper limit of ${{\cal B} (B^- \to Λ{\overline p} ν{\overlineν}) < 3.0\times 10^{-5}}$ at the $90\%$ confidence level.

Relative cross sections for $m$-fold photoionization ($m=1,\ldots,5$) of Fe$^{3+}$ by single photon absorption were measured employing the photon-ion merged-beams setup PIPE at the PETRA III synchrotron light source operated at DESY in Hamburg, Germany. The photon energies used spanned the range of $680-950\,\mathrm{eV}$, covering both the photoexcitation resonances from the $2p$ and $2s$ shells as well as the direct ionization from both shells. Multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock (MCDHF) calculations were performed to simulate the total photoexcitation spectra. Good agreement was found with the experimental results. These computations helped to assign several strong resonance features to specific transitions. We also carried out Hartree-Fock calculations with relativistic extensions taking into account both photoexcitation and photoionization. Furthermore, we performed extensive MCDHF calculations of the Auger cascades that result when an electron is removed from the $2p$ and $2s$ shells of Fe$^{3+}$. Our theoretically predicted charge-state fractions are in good agreement with the experimental results, representing a substantial improvement over previous theoretical calculations. The main reason for the disagreement with the previous calculations is their lack of inclusion of slow Auger decays of several configurations that can only proceed when accompanied by de-excitation of two electrons. In such cases, this additional shake-down transition of a (sub-)valence electron is required to gain the necessary energy for the release of the Auger electron.

We present some results concerning the dialogue behavior and inferred sentiment of a group of older adults interacting with a computer-based avatar. Our avatar is unique in its ability to hold natural dialogues on a wide range of everyday topics---27 topics in three groups, developed with the help of gerontologists. The three groups vary in ``degrees of intimacy", and as such in degrees of difficulty for the user. Each participant interacted with the avatar for 7-9 sessions over a period of 3-4 weeks; analysis of the dialogues reveals correlations such as greater verbosity for more difficult topics, increasing verbosity with successive sessions, especially for more difficult topics, stronger sentiment on topics concerned with life goals rather than routine activities, and stronger self-disclosure for more intimate topics. In addition to their intrinsic interest, these results also reflect positively on the sophistication of our dialogue system.

We show how to exactly reconstruct the block structure at the critical line in the so-called Ising block model. This model was re-introduced by Berthet, Rigollet and Srivastava in a recent paper. There the authors show how to exactly reconstruct blocks away from the critical line and they give an upper and a lower bound on the number of observations one needs; thereby they establish a minimax optimal rate (up to constants). Our technique relies on a combination of their methods with fluctuation results for block spin Ising models. The latter are extended to the full critical regime. We find that the number of necessary observations depends on whether the interaction parameter between two blocks is positive or negative: In the first case, there are about $N \log N$ observations required to exactly recover the block structure, while in the latter $\sqrt N \log N$ observations suffice.

We construct and analyze a random graph model for discrete choice with social interaction and several groups of equal size. We concentrate on the case of two groups of equal sizes and we allow the interaction strength within a group to differ from the interaction strength between the two groups. Given that the resulting graph is sufficiently dense we show that, with probability one, the average decision in each of the two groups is the same as in the fully connected model. In particular, we show that there is a phase transition: If the interaction among a group and between the groups is strong enough the average decision per group will either be positive or negative and the decision of the two groups will be correlated. We also compute the free energy per particle in our model.

We address the problem of designing a conversational avatar capable of a sequence of casual conversations with older adults. Users at risk of loneliness, social anxiety or a sense of ennui may benefit from practicing such conversations in private, at their convenience. We describe an automatic spoken dialogue manager for LISSA, an on-screen virtual agent that can keep older users involved in conversations over several sessions, each lasting 10-20 minutes. The idea behind LISSA is to improve users' communication skills by providing feedback on their non-verbal behavior at certain points in the course of the conversations. In this paper, we analyze the dialogues collected from the first session between LISSA and each of 8 participants. We examine the quality of the conversations by comparing the transcripts with those collected in a WOZ setting. LISSA's contributions to the conversations were judged by research assistants who rated the extent to which the contributions were "natural", "on track", "encouraging", "understanding", "relevant", and "polite". The results show that the automatic dialogue manager was able to handle conversation with the users smoothly and naturally.

The analysis is performed with a combination of the final data sets of the \babar\ and Belle experiments containing $471 \times 10^{6}$ and $772 \times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ\left(4S\right)$ resonance at the asymmetric-energy B factories PEP-II at SLAC and KEKB at KEK, respectively. We measure $\sin{2β} = 0.80 \pm 0.14 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 0.06 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.03 \,(\rm{model})$ and $\cos{2β} = 0.91 \pm 0.22 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 0.09 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.07 \,(\rm{model})$. The result for the direct measurement of the angle is $β= \left( 22.5 \pm 4.4 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 1.2 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.6 \,(\rm{model}) \right)^{\circ}$. The last quoted uncertainties are due to the composition of the $D^{0} \to K_{S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-}$ decay amplitude model, which is newly established by a Dalitz plot amplitude analysis of a high-statistics $e^{+}e^{-} \to c\bar{c}$ data sample as part of this analysis. We find the first evidence for $\cos2β>0$ at the level of $3.7$ standard deviations. The measurement excludes the trigonometric multifold solution $π/2 - β= (68.1 \pm 0.7)^{\circ}$ at the level of $7.3$ standard deviations and therefore resolves an ambiguity in the determination of the apex of the CKM Unitarity Triangle. The hypothesis of $β= 0^{\circ}$ is ruled out at the level of $5.1$ standard deviations, and thus CP violation is observed in $B^{0} \to D^{(*)} h^{0}$ decays.

We present first evidence that the cosine of the CP-violating weak phase $2β$ is positive, and hence exclude trigonometric multifold solutions of the CKM Unitarity Triangle using a time-dependent Dalitz plot analysis of $B^{0} \to D^{(*)} h^{0}$ with $D \to K_{S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-}$ decays, where $h^{0} \in \{π^{0}, η, ω\}$ denotes a light unflavored and neutral hadron. The measurement is performed combining the final data sets of the BaBar and Belle experiments collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance at the asymmetric-energy B factories PEP-II at SLAC and KEKB at KEK, respectively. The data samples contain $( 471 \pm 3 )\times 10^6\, B\bar{B}$ pairs recorded by the BaBar detector and $( 772 \pm 11 )\times 10^6\, B\bar{B}$ pairs recorded by the Belle detector. The results of the measurement are $\sin{2β} = 0.80 \pm 0.14 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 0.06 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.03 \,(\rm{model})$ and $\cos{2β} = 0.91 \pm 0.22 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 0.09 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.07 \,(\rm{model})$. The result for the direct measurement of the angle $β$ of the CKM Unitarity Triangle is $β= \left( 22.5 \pm 4.4 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 1.2 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.6 \,(\rm{model}) \right)^{\circ}$. The quoted model uncertainties are due to the composition of the $D^{0} \to K_{S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-}$ decay amplitude model, which is newly established by performing a Dalitz plot amplitude analysis using a high-statistics $e^{+}e^{-} \to c\bar{c}$ data sample. CP violation is observed in $B^{0} \to D^{(*)} h^{0}$ decays at the level of $5.1$ standard deviations. The significance for $\cos{2β}>0$ is $3.7$ standard deviations. The trigonometric multifold solution $π/2 - β= (68.1 \pm 0.7)^{\circ}$ is excluded at the level of $7.3$ standard deviations. The measurement resolves an ambiguity in the determination of the apex of the CKM Unitarity Triangle.

Previous work showed that total variation superiorization (TVS) improves reconstructed image quality in proton computed tomography (pCT). The structure of the TVS algorithm has evolved since then and this work investigated if this new algorithmic structure provides additional benefits to pCT image quality. Structural and parametric changes introduced to the original TVS algorithm included: (1) inclusion or exclusion of TV reduction requirement, (2) a variable number, $N$, of TV perturbation steps per feasibility-seeking iteration, and (3) introduction of a perturbation kernel $0<α<1$. The structural change of excluding the TV reduction requirement check tended to have a beneficial effect for $3\le N\le 6$ and allows full parallelization of the TVS algorithm. Repeated perturbations per feasibility-seeking iterations reduced total variation (TV) and material dependent standard deviations for $3\le N\le 6$. The perturbation kernel $α$, equivalent to $α=0.5$ in the original TVS algorithm, reduced TV and standard deviations as $α$ was increased beyond $α=0.5$, but negatively impacted reconstructed relative stop** power (RSP) values for $α>0.75$. The reductions in TV and standard deviations allowed feasibility-seeking with a larger relaxation parameter $λ$ than previously used, without the corresponding increases in standard deviations experienced with the original TVS algorithm. This work demonstrates that the modifications related to the evolution of the original TVS algorithm provide benefits in terms of both pCT image quality and computational efficiency for appropriately chosen parameter values.

Low-dose Proton Computed Tomography (pCT) is an evolving imaging modality that is used in proton therapy planning which addresses the range uncertainty problem. The goal of pCT is generating a 3D map of Relative Stop** Power (RSP) measurements with high accuracy within clinically required time frames. Generating accurate RSP values within the shortest amount of time is considered a key goal when develo** a pCT software. The existing pCT softwares have successfully met this time frame and even succeeded this time goal, but requiring clusters with hundreds of processors.
This paper describes a novel reconstruction technique using two Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) cores, such as is available on a single Nvidia P100. The proposed reconstruction technique is tested on both simulated and experimental datasets and on two different systems namely Nvidia K40 and P100 GPUs from IBM and Cray. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed reconstruction method meets both the timing and accuracy with the benefit of having reasonable cost, and efficient use of power.

The ratio of branching fractions ${\cal{R}}(D^{*-})\equiv {\cal{B}}(B^0 \to D^{*-} τ^+ ν_τ)/{\cal{B}}(B^0 \to D^{*-} μ^+ν_μ)$ is measured using a data sample of proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3$~$fb$^{-1}$. The $τ$ lepton is reconstructed with three charged pions in the final state. A novel method is used that exploits the different vertex topologies of signal and backgrounds to isolate samples of semitauonic decays of $b$ hadrons with high purity. Using the $B^0 \to D^{*-}π^+π^-π^+$ decay as the normalization channel, the ratio ${\cal{B}}(B^0 \to D^{*-} τ^+ ν_τ)/{\cal{B}}(B^0 \to D^{*-}π^+π^-π^+)$ is measured to be $1.97 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.18$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. An average of branching fraction measurements for the normalization channel is used to derive ${\cal{B}}(B^0 \to D^{*-} τ^+ ν_τ) = (1.42 \pm 0.094 \pm 0.129 \pm 0.054) \%$, where the third uncertainty is due to the limited knowledge of ${\cal{B}}(B^0\to D^{*-}π^+π^-π^+)$. A test of lepton flavor universality is performed using the well-measured branching fraction ${\cal{B}}(B^0 \to D^{*-} μ^+ν_μ)$ to compute ${\cal{R}}(D^{*-}) = 0.291 \pm 0.019 \pm 0.026 \pm 0.013$, where the third uncertainty originates from the uncertainties on ${\cal{B}}(B^0 \to D^{*-}π^+π^-π^+)$ and ${\cal{B}}(B^0 \to D^{*-} μ^+ν_μ)$. This measurement is in agreement with the Standard Model prediction and with previous measurements.

\begin{align*} \frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow p π^{-} π^{+})}{\mathcal{B}(Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow p K^{-} π^{+})} & = (7.44 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.18)\,\%, \frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow p K^{-} K^{+})}{\mathcal{B}(Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow p K^{-} π^{+})} &= (1.70 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.03)\,\%, \frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow p π^{-} K^{+})}{\mathcal{B}(Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow p K^{-} π^{+})} & = (0.165 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.005 )\,\%, \end{align*} where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. These results are the most precise measurements of these quantities to date. When multiplied by the world-average value for $\mathcal{B}(Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow p K^{-} π^{+})$, the corresponding branching fractions are \begin{align*} \mathcal{B}(Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow p π^{-} π^{+}) &= (4.72 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.25) \times 10^{-3}, \mathcal{B}(Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow p K^{-} K^{+}) &= (1.08 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.06) \times 10^{-3}, \mathcal{B}(Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow p π^{-} K^{+}) &= (1.04 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.05) \times 10^{-4}, \end{align*} where the final uncertainty is due to $\mathcal{B}(Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow p K^{-} π^{+})$.

Absolute cross sections for m-fold photoionization (m=1,...,6) of Fe+ by a single photon were measured employing the photon-ion merged-beams setup PIPE at the PETRA III synchrotron light source, operated by DESY in Hamburg, Germany. Photon energies were in the range 680-920 eV which covers the photoionization resonances associated with 2p and 2s excitation to higher atomic shells as well as the thresholds for 2p and 2s ionization. The corresponding resonance positions were measured with an uncertainty of +- 0.2 eV. The cross section for Fe+ photoabsorption is derived as the sum of the individually measured cross-sections for m-fold ionization. Calculations of the Fe+ absorption cross sections have been carried out using two different theoretical approaches, Hartree-Fock including relativistic extensions and fully relativistic Multi-Configuration Dirac Fock. Apart from overall energy shifts of up to about 3 eV, the theoretical cross sections are in good agreement with each other and with the experimental results. In addition, the complex deexcitation cascades after the creation of inner-shell holes in the Fe+ ion have been tracked on the atomic fine-structure level. The corresponding theoretical results for the product charge-state distributions are in much better agreement with the experimental data than previously published configuration-average results. The present experimental and theoretical results are valuable for opacity calculations and are expected to pave the way to a more accurate determination of the iron abundance in the interstellar medium.

The decay $Z \rightarrow b \bar{b}$ is reconstructed in $pp$ collision data, corresponding to 2 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV. The product of the $Z$ production cross-section and the $Z \rightarrow b \bar{b}$ branching fraction is measured for candidates in the fiducial region defined by two particle-level $b$-quark jets with pseudorapidities in the range $2.2 < η< 4.2$, with transverse momenta $p_{T}>20$ GeV and dijet invariant mass in the range $45 < m_{jj} < 165$ GeV. From a signal yield of $5462 \pm 763$ $Z \rightarrow b \bar{b}$ events, where the uncertainty is statistical, a production cross-section times branching fraction of $332 \pm 46 \pm 59$ pb is obtained, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The measured significance of the signal yield is 6.0 standard deviations. This measurement represents the first observation of the $Z \rightarrow b \bar{b}$ production in the forward region of $pp$ collisions.

The signature for Bose-Einstein correlations is observed in the form of an enhancement of pairs of like-sign charged pions with small four-momentum difference squared. The charged-particle multiplicity dependence of the Bose-Einstein correlation parameters describing the correlation strength and the size of the emitting source is investigated, determining both the correlation radius and the chaoticity parameter. The measured correlation radius is found to increase as a function of increasing charged-particle multiplicity, while the chaoticity parameter is seen to decrease.

The first observation of the decay of a $B^0$ meson to a purely baryonic final state, $B^0 \to p \bar{p}$, is reported. The proton-proton collision data sample used was collected with the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$. The branching fraction is determined to be $${\cal B}(B^0 \to p \bar{p}) = ( 1.25 \pm 0.27 \pm 0.18 ) \times 10^{-8} ,$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The decay mode $B^0 \to p \bar{p}$ is the rarest decay of the $B^0$ meson observed to date. The decay $B_s^0 \to p \bar{p}$ is also investigated. No signal is seen and the upper limit ${\cal B}(B_s^0 \to p \bar{p}) < 1.5 \times 10^{-8}$ at 90% confidence level is set on the branching fraction.

For the first time ${\cal{R}}(D^{*-})$ is determined using the $τ$ lepton decays with three charged pions in the final state. The $B^0 \to D^{*-} τ^+ν_τ$ yield is normalized to that of the $B^0\to D^{*-} π^+π^-π^+$ mode, providing a measurement of ${\cal{B}}(B^0\to D^{*-}τ^+ν_τ)/{\cal{B}}(B^0\to D^{*-}π^+π^-π^+) = 1.97 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.18$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This measurement is in agreement with the Standard Model prediction and with previous results.

Abstract:
Measurements of $CP$ observables in $B^\pm \rightarrow D^{(*)} K^\pm$ and $B^\pm \rightarrow D^{(*)} π^\pm$ decays are presented, where $D^{(*)}$ indicates a neutral $D$ or $D^*$ meson that is an admixture of $D^{(*)0}$ and $\bar{D}^{(*)0}$ states. Decays of the $D^*$ meson to the $Dπ^0$ and $Dγ$ final states are partially reconstructed without inclusion of the neutral pion or photon, resulting in…

Decays of the $D^*$ meson to the $Dπ^0$ and $Dγ$ final states are partially reconstructed without inclusion of the neutral pion or photon, resulting in distinctive shapes in the $B$ candidate invariant mass distribution. Decays of the $D$ meson are fully reconstructed in the $K^\pm π^\mp$, $K^+ K^-$ and $π^+ π^-$ final states. The analysis uses a sample of charged $B$ mesons produced in $pp$ collisions collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0, 1.0 and 2.0 fb$^{-1}$ taken at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}$ = 7, 8 and 13 TeV, respectively. The study of $B^{\pm} \to D^{*} K^{\pm}$ and $B^{\pm} \to D^{*} π^{\pm}$ decays using a partial reconstruction method is the first of its kind, while the measurement of $B^{\pm} \to D K^{\pm}$ and $B^{\pm} \to D π^{\pm}$ decays is an update of previous LHCb measurements. The $B^{\pm} \to D K^{\pm}$ results are the most precise to date.

Abstract:
A search for baryon-number-violating $Ξ_b^0$ oscillations is performed with a sample of $pp$ collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$. The baryon number at the moment of production is identified by requiring that the $Ξ_b^0$ come from the decay of a resonance $Ξ_b^{*-} \to Ξ_b^0 π^-$ or $Ξ_b^{\prime-} \to Ξ_b^0 π^-$, and the baryon nu…

A search for baryon-number-violating $Ξ_b^0$ oscillations is performed with a sample of $pp$ collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$. The baryon number at the moment of production is identified by requiring that the $Ξ_b^0$ come from the decay of a resonance $Ξ_b^{*-} \to Ξ_b^0 π^-$ or $Ξ_b^{\prime-} \to Ξ_b^0 π^-$, and the baryon number at the moment of decay is identified from the final state using the decays $Ξ_b^0 \to Ξ_c^+ π^-, ~ Ξ_c^+ \to p K^- π^+$. No evidence of baryon number violation is found, and an upper limit at the 95% confidence level is set on the oscillation rate of $ω< 0.08$ ps$^{-1}$, where $ω$ is the associated angular frequency.
