Finite groups with many $p$-regular conjugacy classes
Abstract: Let $G$ be a finite group and let $p$ be a prime. In this paper, we study the structure of finite groups with a large number of $p$-regular conjugacy classes or, equivalently, a large number of irreducible $p$-modular representations. We prove sharp lower bounds for this number in terms of $p$ and the $p'$-part of the order of $G$ which ensure that $G$ is $p$-solvable. A bound for the $p$-length i… ▽ More

Optical signatures of quantum delocalization over extended domains in photosynthetic membranes
Abstract: The prospect of coherent dynamics and excitonic delocalization across several light-harvesting structures in photosynthetic membranes is of considerable interest, but challenging to explore experimentally. Here we demonstrate theoretically that the excitonic delocalization across extended domains involving several light-harvesting complexes can lead to unambiguous signatures in the optical respons… ▽ More

Quantum redirection of antenna absorption to photosynthetic reaction centres
Abstract: The early steps of photosynthesis involve the photo-excitation of reaction centres (RCs) and light-harvesting (LH) units. Here, we show that the --historically overlooked-- excitonic delocalisation across RC and LH pigments results in a redistribution of dipole strengths that benefits the absorption cross section of the optical bands associated with the RC of several species. While we prove that t… ▽ More

Feedback in a cavity QED system for control of quantum beats
Abstract: Conditional measurements on the undriven mode of a two-mode cavity QED system prepare a coherent superposition of ground states which generate quantum beats. The continuous system drive induces decoherence through the phase interruptions from Rayleigh scattering, which manifests as a decrease of the beat amplitude and an increase of the frequency of oscillation. We report recent experiments that i… ▽ More

Control of conditional quantum beats in cavity QED: amplitude decoherence and phase shifts
Abstract: We implement a simple feedback mechanism on a two-mode cavity QED system to preserve the Zeeman coherence of a ground state superposition that generates quantum beats on the second-order correlation function. Our investigation includes theoretical and experimental studies that show how to prevent a shift away from the Larmor frequency and associated decoherence caused by Rayleigh scattering. The p… ▽ More

Optimized pulse sequences for suppressing unwanted transitions in quantum systems
Abstract: We investigate the nature of the pulse sequence so that unwanted transitions in quantum systems can be inhibited optimally. For this purpose we show that the sequence of pulses proposed by Uhrig [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{98}, 100504 (2007)] in the context of inhibition of environmental dephasing effects is optimal. We derive exact results for inhibiting the transitions and confirm the results nume… ▽ More
