Abstract: The ESO public survey VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) surveyed the inner Galactic bulge and the adjacent southern Galactic disk from $2009-2015$. Upon its conclusion, the complementary VVV eXtended (VVVX) survey has expanded both the temporal as well as spatial coverage of the original VVV area, widening it from $562$ to $1700$ sq. deg., as well as providing additional epochs in… ▽ More The ESO public survey VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) surveyed the inner Galactic bulge and the adjacent southern Galactic disk from $2009-2015$. Upon its conclusion, the complementary VVV eXtended (VVVX) survey has expanded both the temporal as well as spatial coverage of the original VVV area, widening it from $562$ to $1700$ sq. deg., as well as providing additional epochs in $JHK_{\rm s}$ filters from $2016-2023$. With the completion of VVVX observations during the first semester of 2023, we present here the observing strategy, a description of data quality and access, and the legacy of VVVX. VVVX took $\sim 2000$ hours, covering about 4% of the sky in the bulge and southern disk. VVVX covered most of the gaps left between the VVV and the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS) areas and extended the VVV time baseline in the obscured regions affected by high extinction and hence hidden from optical observations. VVVX provides a deep $JHK_{\rm s}$ catalogue of $\gtrsim 1.5\times10^9$ point sources, as well as a $K_{\rm s}$ band catalogue of $\sim 10^7$ variable sources. Within the existing VVV area, we produced a $5D$ map of the surveyed region by combining positions, distances, and proper motions of well-understood distance indicators such as red clump stars, RR Lyrae, and Cepheid variables. In March 2023 we successfully finished the VVVX survey observations that started in 2016, an accomplishment for ESO Paranal Observatory upon 4200 hours of observations for VVV+VVVX. The VVV+VVVX catalogues complement those from the Gaia mission at low Galactic latitudes and provide spectroscopic targets for the forthcoming ESO high-multiplex spectrographs MOONS and 4MOST. △ Less

MHONGOOSE -- A MeerKAT Nearby Galaxy HI Survey

The HI column density sensitivity (3 sigma over 16 km/s) ranges from ~ 5 x 10^{17} cm^{-2} at 90'' resolution to ~4 x 1… ▽ More The MHONGOOSE (MeerKAT HI Observations of Nearby Galactic Objects: Observing Southern Emitters) survey maps the distribution and kinematics of the neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) gas in and around 30 nearby star-forming spiral and dwarf galaxies to extremely low HI column densities. The HI column density sensitivity (3 sigma over 16 km/s) ranges from ~ 5 x 10^{17} cm^{-2} at 90'' resolution to ~4 x 10^{19} cm^{-2} at the highest resolution of 7''. The HI mass sensitivity (3 sigma over 50 km/s) is ~5.5 X 10^5 M_sun at a distance of 10 Mpc (the median distance of the sample galaxies). The velocity resolution of the data is 1.4 km/s. One of the main science goals of the survey is the detection of cold, accreting gas in the outskirts of the sample galaxies. The sample was selected to cover a range in HI masses, from 10^7 M_sun to almost 10^{11} M_sun, to optimally sample possible accretion scenarios and environments. The distance to the sample galaxies ranges from 3 to 23 Mpc. In this paper, we present the sample selection, survey design, and observation and reduction procedures. We compare the integrated HI fluxes based on the MeerKAT data with those derived from single-dish measurement and find good agreement, indicating that our MeerKAT observations are recovering all flux. We present HI moment maps of the entire sample based on the first ten percent of the survey data, and find that a comparison of the zeroth- and second-moment values shows a clear separation between the physical properties of the HI in areas with star formation and areas without, related to the formation of a cold neutral medium. Finally, we give an overview of the HI-detected companion and satellite galaxies in the 30 fields, five of which have not previously been catalogued. We find a clear relation between the number of companion galaxies and the mass of the main target galaxy. △ Less

LADUMA: Discovery of a luminous OH megamaser at $z > 0.5$

Given the proximity of the rest frequencies of OH and the hyperfine transition of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI), radio surveys to probe the cosmic evolution of HI in galaxies also offer exciting prospects for exploiting OHMs to probe the cosmic history of gas-rich mergers. Using observations for the Looking At the Distant Universe with the MeerKAT Array (LADUMA) deep HI survey, we report the first untargeted detection of an OHM at $z > 0.5$, LADUMA J033046.20$-$275518.1 (nicknamed "Nkalakatha"). The host system, WISEA J033046.26$-$275518.3, is an infrared-luminous radio galaxy whose optical redshift $z \approx 0.52$ confirms the MeerKAT emission line detection as OH at a redshift $z_{\rm OH} = 0.5225 \pm 0.0001$ rather than HI at lower redshift. The detected spectral line has 18.4$σ$ peak significance, a width of $459 \pm 59\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$, and an integrated luminosity of $(6.31 \pm 0.18\,{\rm [statistical]}\,\pm 0.31\,{\rm [systematic]}) \times 10^3\,L_\odot$, placing it among the most luminous OHMs known. The galaxy's far-infrared luminosity $L_{\rm FIR} = (1.576 \pm 0.013) \times 10^{12}\,L_\odot$ marks it as an ultra-luminous infrared galaxy; its ratio of OH and infrared luminosities is similar to those for lower-redshift OHMs. A comparison between optical and OH redshifts offers a slight indication of an OH outflow. This detection represents the first step towards a systematic exploitation of OHMs as a tracer of galaxy growth at high redshifts. △ Less

A comparative analysis of Galactic extinction at low Galactic latitudes

Abstract: We use near-infrared (J-K)-colours of bright 2MASS galaxies, measured within a 7"-radius aperture, to calibrate the Schlegel et al. (1998) DIRBE/IRAS Galactic extinction map at low Galactic latitudes ($|b| < 10^{\rm o}$). Using 3460 galaxies covering a large range in extinction (up to $A_K$ = 1.15 or E(B-V) ~ 3.19), we derive a correction factor $f = 0.83 \pm 0.01$ by fitting a linear regression t… ▽ More We use near-infrared (J-K)-colours of bright 2MASS galaxies, measured within a 7"-radius aperture, to calibrate the Schlegel et al. (1998) DIRBE/IRAS Galactic extinction map at low Galactic latitudes ($|b| < 10^{\rm o}$). Using 3460 galaxies covering a large range in extinction (up to $A_K$ = 1.15 or E(B-V) ~ 3.19), we derive a correction factor $f = 0.83 \pm 0.01$ by fitting a linear regression to the colour-extinction relation, confirming that the Schlegel et al. maps overestimate the extinction. We argue that the use of only a small range in extinction (e.g., $A_K$ < 0.4) increases the uncertainty in the correction factor and may overestimate it. Our data confirms the Fitzpatrick (1999) extinction law for the J- and K-band. We also tested four all-sky extinction maps based on Planck satellite data. All maps require a correction factor as well. In three cases the application of the respective extinction correction to the galaxy colours results in a reduced scatter in the colour-extinction relation, indicating a more reliable extinction correction. Finally, the large galaxy sample allows an analysis of the calibration of the extinction maps as a function of Galactic longitude and latitude. For all but one extinction map we find a marked offset between the Galactic Centre and Anticentre region, but not with the dipole of the Cosmic Microwave Background. Based on our analysis, we recommend the use of the GNILC extinction map by Planck Collaboration (2016b) with a correction factor $f = 0.86 \pm 0.01$. △ Less

A near-infrared study of the obscured 3C129 galaxy cluster

Abstract: We present a catalogue of 261 new infrared selected members of the 3C129 galaxy cluster. The cluster, located at $z \approx$ 0.02, forms part of the Perseus-Pisces filament and is obscured at optical wavelengths due to its location in the zone of avoidance. We identified these galaxies using the $J-$ and $K-$band imaging data provided by the UKIDSS Galactic Plane Survey within an area with a radiu… ▽ More We present a catalogue of 261 new infrared selected members of the 3C129 galaxy cluster. The cluster, located at $z \approx$ 0.02, forms part of the Perseus-Pisces filament and is obscured at optical wavelengths due to its location in the zone of avoidance. We identified these galaxies using the $J-$ and $K-$band imaging data provided by the UKIDSS Galactic Plane Survey within an area with a radius of $1.1^{\circ}$ centred on the X-ray emission of the cluster at $\ell, b \approx 160.52^{\circ}, 0.27^{\circ}$. A total of 26 of the identified galaxy members have known redshifts 24 of which are from our 2016 Westerbork HI survey and two are from optical spectroscopy. An analysis of the galaxy density at the core of the 3C129 cluster shows it to be less dense than the Coma and Norma clusters, but comparable to the galaxy density in the core of the Perseus cluster. From an assessment of the spatial and velocity distributions of the 3C129 cluster galaxies that have redshifts, we derived a velocity of $cz = 5227 \pm 171$ km/s and $σ= 1097 \pm 252$ km/s for the main cluster, with a substructure in the cluster outskirts at $cz = 6923 \pm 71$ km/s with $σ= 422 \pm 100$ km/s. The presence of this substructure is consistent with previous claims based on the X-ray analysis that the cluster is not yet virialised and may have undergone a recent merger. △ Less

It uses the widefield, high-resolution capability of the Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), a radio interferometer consisting of 36 x 12-m dishes equipped with Phased-Array Feeds (PAFs), located in an extremely radio-quiet zone in Western Australia. WALLABY aims to survey three-quarters of the sky (-90 degr < Dec < +30 degr) to a redshift of z < 0.26, and generate spectral line image cubes at ~30 arcsec resolution and ~1.6 mJy/beam per 4 km/s channel sensitivity. ASKAP's instantaneous field of view at 1.4 GHz, delivered by the PAF's 36 beams, is about 30 sq deg. At an integrated signal-to-noise ratio of five, WALLABY is expected to detect over half a million galaxies with a mean redshift of z ~ 0.05 (~200 Mpc). The scientific goals of WALLABY include: (a) a census of gas-rich galaxies in the vicinity of the Local Group; (b) a study of the HI properties of galaxies, groups and clusters, in particular the influence of the environment on galaxy evolution; and (c) the refinement of cosmological parameters using the spatial and redshift distribution of low-bias gas-rich galaxies. For context we provide an overview of previous large-scale HI surveys. Combined with existing and new multi-wavelength sky surveys, WALLABY will enable an exciting new generation of panchromatic studies of the Local Universe. - First results from the WALLABY pilot survey are revealed, with initial data products publicly available in the CSIRO ASKAP Science Data Archive (CASDA). △ Less

EZOA -- A catalogue of EBHIS HI detected galaxies in the northern Zone of Avoidance

Abstract: We present a catalogue of galaxies in the northern Zone of Avoidance (ZoA), extracted from the shallow version of the blind HI survey with the Effelsberg 100 m radio telescope, EBHIS, that has a sensitivity of 23 mJy/beam at 10.24 km/s velocity resolution. The catalogue comprises 170 detections in the region Dec >= -5 degrees and |b| < 6 degrees. About a third of the detections (N=67) have not bee… ▽ More We present a catalogue of galaxies in the northern Zone of Avoidance (ZoA), extracted from the shallow version of the blind HI survey with the Effelsberg 100 m radio telescope, EBHIS, that has a sensitivity of 23 mJy/beam at 10.24 km/s velocity resolution. The catalogue comprises 170 detections in the region Dec >= -5 degrees and |b| < 6 degrees. About a third of the detections (N=67) have not been previously recorded in HI. While 29 detections have no discernible counterpart at any wavelength other than HI, 48 detections (28%) have a counterpart visible on optical or NIR images but are not recorded as such in the literature. New HI detections were found as close as 7.5 Mpc (EZOA J2120+45), and at the edge of the Local Volume, at 10.1 Mpc, we have found two previously unknown dwarf galaxies (EZOA J0506+31 and EZOA J0301+56). Existing large-scale structures crossing the northern ZoA have been established more firmly by the new detections, with the possibility of new filaments. We conclude that the high rate of 39% new HI\detections in the northern ZoA, which has been extensively surveyed with targeted observations in the past, proves the power of blind HI surveys. The full EBHIS survey, which will cover the full northern sky with a sensitivity comparable to the HIPASS survey of the southern sky, is expected to add many new detections and uncover new structures in the northern ZoA. △ Less

A Zone of Avoidance catalogue of 2MASS bright galaxies. I. Sample description and analysis

Abstract: We present a homogeneous 2MASS bright galaxy catalogue at low Galactic latitudes ($|b| \le 10.0^{\rm o}$, called Zone of Avoidance) which is complete to a Galactic extinction-corrected magnitude of $K^o_s \le 11.25^{\rm m}$. It also includes galaxies in regions of high foreground extinctions ($E(B-V) > 0.95^{\rm m}$) situated at higher latitudes. This catalogue forms the basis of studies of large-… ▽ More We present a homogeneous 2MASS bright galaxy catalogue at low Galactic latitudes ($|b| \le 10.0^{\rm o}$, called Zone of Avoidance) which is complete to a Galactic extinction-corrected magnitude of $K^o_s \le 11.25^{\rm m}$. It also includes galaxies in regions of high foreground extinctions ($E(B-V) > 0.95^{\rm m}$) situated at higher latitudes. This catalogue forms the basis of studies of large-scale structures, flow fields and extinction across the ZoA and complements the ongoing 2MASS Redshift and Tully-Fisher surveys. It comprises 3763 galaxies, 70% of which have at least one radial velocity measurement in the literature. The catalogue is complete up to star density levels of $\log N_*/{\rm deg}^2 <4.5$ and at least for $A_K < 0.6^{\rm m}$ and likely as high as $A_K = 20^{\rm m}$. Thus the ZoA in terms of bright NIR galaxies covers only $2.5-4$% of the whole sky. We use a diameter-dependent extinction correction to compare our sample with an unobscured, high-latitude sample. While the correction to the $K_s$ -band magnitude is sufficient, the corrected diameters are too small by about $4''$ on average. The omission of applying such a diameter-dependent extinction correction may lead to a biased flow field even at intermediate extinction values as found in the 2MRS survey. A slight dependence of galaxy colour with stellar density indicates that unsubtracted foreground stars make galaxies appear bluer. Furthermore, far-infrared sources in the DIRBE/IRAS extinction maps that were not removed at low latitudes affect the foreground extinction corrections of three galaxies and may weakly affect a further estimated $\approx 20$% of our galaxies. △ Less

The Nancay HI Zone of Avoidance survey of 2MASS bright galaxies

Abstract: To complement the 2MASS Redshift Survey (2MRS) and the 2MASS Tully-Fisher survey (2MTF) a search for 21cm HI line emission of 2MASS bright galaxy candidates has been pursued along the dust-obscured plane of the Milky Way with the 100m Nancay Radio Telescope. For our sample selection we adopted an isophotal extinction-corrected K-band magnitude limit of $K_s^o = 11.25$mag, corresponding to the firs… ▽ More To complement the 2MASS Redshift Survey (2MRS) and the 2MASS Tully-Fisher survey (2MTF) a search for 21cm HI line emission of 2MASS bright galaxy candidates has been pursued along the dust-obscured plane of the Milky Way with the 100m Nancay Radio Telescope. For our sample selection we adopted an isophotal extinction-corrected K-band magnitude limit of $K_s^o = 11.25$mag, corresponding to the first 2MRS data release and 2MTF, for which the 2MASX completeness level remains fairly constant deep into the Zone of Avoidance (ZoA). About one thousand galaxies without prior redshift measurement accessible from Nancay (Dec > -40°) were observed to an rms noise level of ~3 mJy for the velocity range -250 to 10'600 km/s. This resulted in 220 clear and 12 marginal detections of the target sample. Only few detections have redshifts above 8000 km/s due to recurring radio frequency interference (RFI). A further 29 detections and 6 marginals have their origin in non-target galaxies in the telescope beam. The newly detected galaxies are on average considerably more \HI-rich (mostly $10^9 - 10^{10}$M$_\odot$) compared to systematic (blind) HI surveys. The HI detections reveal various new filaments crossing the mostly uncharted northern ZoA (e.g. at $\ell \sim 90°, 130°, 160°$), whilst consolidating galaxy agglomerations in Monoceros and Puppis ($\ell \sim 220°, 240°$). Considerably new insight has been gained about the extent of the Perseus-Pisces Supercluster through the confirmation of a ridge ($\ell \sim 160°$) encompassing the 3C129 cluster that links Perseus-Pisces to Lynx, and the continuation of the second Perseus-Pisces arm ($\ell \sim 90°$) across the ZoA. △ Less

An Overview of the MHONGOOSE Survey: Observing Nearby Galaxies with MeerKAT

Abstract: MHONGOOSE is a deep survey of the neutral hydrogen distribution in a representative sample of 30 nearby disk and dwarf galaxies with HI masses from 10^6 to ~10^{11} M_sun, and luminosities from M_R ~ -12 to M_R ~ -22. The sample is selected to uniformly cover the available range in log(M_HI). Our extremely deep observations, down to HI column density limits of well below 10^{18} cm^{-2} - or a few… ▽ More MHONGOOSE is a deep survey of the neutral hydrogen distribution in a representative sample of 30 nearby disk and dwarf galaxies with HI masses from 10^6 to ~10^{11} M_sun, and luminosities from M_R ~ -12 to M_R ~ -22. The sample is selected to uniformly cover the available range in log(M_HI). Our extremely deep observations, down to HI column density limits of well below 10^{18} cm^{-2} - or a few hundred times fainter than the typical HI disks in galaxies - will directly detect the effects of cold accretion from the intergalactic medium and the links with the cosmic web. These observations will be the first ever to probe the very low-column density neutral gas in galaxies at these high resolutions. Combination with data at other wavelengths, most of it already available, will enable accurate modelling of the properties and evolution of the mass components in these galaxies and link these with the effects of environment, dark matter distribution, and other fundamental properties such as halo mass and angular momentum. MHONGOOSE can already start addressing some of the SKA-1 science goals and will provide a comprehensive inventory of the processes driving the transformation and evolution of galaxies in the nearby universe at high resolution and over 5 orders of magnitude in column density. In particular we found that the composite dish surface works well, but it becomes complicated to fabricate for a dish lacking circular symmetry; the Stir- ling cycle cryogenic system with ion pump to achieve vacuum works but demands much higher maintenance than an equivalent Gifford-McMahon cycle system; the ROACH (Recon- figurable Open Architecture Computing Hardware)-based correlator with SPEAD (Stream- ing Protocol for Exchanging Astronomical Data) protocol data transfer works very well and KATCP (Karoo Array Telescope Control Protocol) control protocol has proven very flexible and convenient. KAT-7 has also been used for scientific observations where it has a niche in map** low surface-brightness continuum sources, some extended HI halos and OH masers in star-forming regions. The WSRT ZoA Perseus-Pisces Filament wide-field HI imaging survey I. HI catalogue and atlas

The overdensity corresponds to a Zone-of-Avoidance crossing of the Perseus-Pisces Supercluster filament. Although it is known that this filament contains an X-ray galaxy cluster (3C129) hosting two strong radio galaxies, little is known about galaxi… ▽ More We present results of a blind 21cm HI-line imaging survey of a galaxy overdensity located behind the Milky Way at $\ell,b$ $\approx$ 160 deg, 0.5 deg. The overdensity corresponds to a Zone-of-Avoidance crossing of the Perseus-Pisces Supercluster filament. Although it is known that this filament contains an X-ray galaxy cluster (3C129) hosting two strong radio galaxies, little is known about galaxies associated with this potentially rich cluster because of the high Galactic dust extinction. We mapped a sky area of $\sim$9.6 sq.deg using the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope in a hexagonal mosaic of 35 pointings observed for 12 hours each, in the radial velocity range $cz = 2400 - 16600$ km/s. The survey has a sensitivity of 0.36 mJy/beam rms at a velocity resolution of 16.5 km/s. We detected 211 galaxies, 62% of which have a near-infrared counterpart in the UKIDSS Galactic Plane Survey. We present a catalogue of the HI properties and an HI atlas containing total intensity maps, position-velocity diagrams, global HI profiles and UKIDSS counterpart images. For the resolved galaxies we also present HI velocity fields and radial HI surface density profiles. A brief analysis of the structures outlined by these galaxies finds that 87 of them lie at the distance of the Perseus-Pisces Supercluster ($cz \sim 4000 - 8000$ km/s) and seem to form part of the 3C129 cluster. Further 72 detections trace an overdensity at a velocity of $cz \approx$ 10000 km/s and seem to coincide with a structure predicted from mass density reconstructions in the first 2MASS Redshift Survey. △ Less

The Parkes HI Zone of Avoidance Survey

Abstract: A blind HI survey of the extragalactic sky behind the southern Milky Way has been conducted with the multibeam receiver on the 64-m Parkes radio telescope. The survey covers the Galactic longitude range 212 < l < 36 and Galactic latitudes |b| < 5, and yields 883 galaxies to a recessional velocity of 12,000 km/s. The survey covers the Galactic longitude range 212 < l < 36 and Galactic latitudes |b| < 5, and yields 883 galaxies to a recessional velocity of 12,000 km/s. The survey covers the sky within the HIPASS area to greater sensitivity, finding lower HI-mass galaxies at all distances, and probing more completely the large-scale structures at and beyond the distance of the Great Attractor. Fifty-one percent of the HI detections have an optical/NIR counterpart in the literature. A further 27% have new counterparts found in existing, or newly obtained, optical/NIR images. The counterpart rate drops in regions of high foreground stellar crowding and extinction, and for low-HI mass objects. Only 8% of all counterparts have a previous optical redshift measurement. A notable new galaxy is HIZOA J1353-58, a possible companion to the Circinus galaxy. Merging this catalog with the similarly-conducted northern extension (Donley et al. 2005), large-scale structures are delineated, including those within the Puppis and Great Attractor regions, and the Local Void. Several newly-identified structures are revealed here for the first time. Three new galaxy concentrations (NW1, NW2 and NW3) are key in confirming the diagonal crossing of the Great Attractor Wall between the Norma cluster and the CIZA J1324.7-5736 cluster. Further contributors to the general mass overdensity in that area are two new clusters (CW1 and CW2) in the nearer Centaurus Wall, one of which forms part of the striking 180 deg (100/h Mpc) long filament that dominates the southern sky at velocities of ~3000 km/s, and the suggestion of a further Wall at the Great Attractor distance at slightly higher longitudes. △ Less

A survey of stellar X-ray flares from the XMM-Newton serendipitous source catalogue: Hipparcos-Tycho cool stars

We present a uniform, large-scale survey of X-ray flare emission. The XMM-Newton Serendipitous Source Catalogue and its associated data products provide an excellent basis for a comprehensive and sensitive survey of stellar flares - both from targeted active stars and from those observed serendipitously in the half-degree diameter field-of-view of each observation. The 2XMM Catalogue and the associated time-series (`light-curve') data products have been used as the basis for a survey of X-ray flares from cool stars in the Hipparcos Tycho-2 catalogue. In addition, we have generated and analysed spectrally-resolved (i.e. hardness-ratio), X-ray light-curves. Where available, we have compared XMM OM UV/optical data with the X-ray light-curves. Our sample contains ~130 flares with well-observed profiles; they originate from ~70 stars. The flares range in duration from ~1e3 to ~1e4 s, have peak X-ray fluxes from ~1e-13 to ~1e-11 erg/cm2/s, peak X-ray luminosities from ~1e29 to ~1e32 erg/s, and X-ray energy output from ~1e32 to ~1e35 erg. Most of the ~30 serendipitously-observed stars have little previously reported information. The hardness-ratio plots clearly illustrate the spectral (and hence inferred temperature) variations characteristic of many flares, and provide an easily accessible overview of the data. We present flare frequency distributions from both target and serendipitous observations. The latter provide an unbiased (with respect to stellar activity) study of flare energetics; in addition, they allow us to predict numbers of stellar flares that may be detected in future X-ray wide-field surveys. The serendipitous sample demonstrates the need for care when calculating flaring rates. △ Less

Extragalactic large-scale structures in the northern Zone of Avoidance

We selected galaxies with extinction-corrected magnitudes $K_s^o \leq 11\hbox{$.\!\!^{\rm m}$}25$ from the 2MASS Extended Source Catalog. These data will complement the existing 2MASS Redshift Survey (2MRS; first data release) as well as the ongoing 2MASS Tully-Fisher survey, both of which exclude the inner ZoA ($|b|< 5^{\circ}$), where the identification of galaxy candidates is the hardest. Of the $\sim$1000 identified 2MASX galaxy candidates we have so far detected 252 to our 3.0 mJy rms sensitivity limit and the velocity limit of 10500 km/s. The resulting redshift distribution reveals various new structures that were hitherto uncharted. They seem to form part of the larger Perseus-Pisces Supercluster (PPS). The most conspicuous is a ridge at about $\ell\approx 160^{\circ}$,$v \approx 6500$ km/s. Within this wall-like structure, two strong radio galaxies (3C 129 and 3C 129.1) are embedded which lie at the same distance as the ridge. They seem to form part of an X-ray cluster. Another prominent filament has been identified crossing the ZoA at $\ell \approx 90^\circ$, hence suggesting the second Perseus-Pisces arm is more extended than previously thought. △ Less

The Norma cluster (ACO3627) -- III. The Distance and Peculiar Velocity via the Near-Infrared Ks-band Fundamental Plane

The Norma cluster has a mean redshift (z_CMB) of 0.0165 and has been proposed as the "core" of the GA. We have used the Ks-band Fundamental Plane (FP) to measure Norma cluster's distance with respect to the Coma cluster. We report FP photometry parameters (effective… ▽ More While Norma (ACO3627) is the richest cluster in the Great Attractor (GA) region, its role in the local dynamics is poorly understood. The Norma cluster has a mean redshift (z_CMB) of 0.0165 and has been proposed as the "core" of the GA. We have used the Ks-band Fundamental Plane (FP) to measure Norma cluster's distance with respect to the Coma cluster. We report FP photometry parameters (effective radii and surface brightnesses), derived from ESO NTT SOFI images, and velocity dispersions, from AAT 2dF spectroscopy, for 31 early-type galaxies in the cluster. For the Coma cluster we use 2MASS images and SDSS velocity dispersion measurements for 121 early-type galaxies to generate the calibrating FP dataset. For the combined Norma-Coma sample we measure FP coefficients of a=1.465+/-0.059 and b=0.326+/-0.020. We find an rms scatter, in log(central velocity dispersion) of 0.08 dex which corresponds to a distance uncertainty of 28% per galaxy. The zero point offset between Norma's and Coma's FPs is 0.154+/-0.014 dex. Assuming that the Coma cluster is at rest with respect to the cosmic microwave background frame and z_CMB(Coma)=0.0240, we derive a distance to the Norma cluster of 5026+/-160 km/s, and the derived peculiar velocity is -72+/-170 km/s, i.e., consistent with zero. This is lower than previously reported positive peculiar velocities for clusters/groups/galaxies in the GA region and hence the Norma cluster may indeed represent the GA's "core". △ Less

VVV targets 562 sq. deg in the Galactic bulge and an adjacent plane region and is expected to run for ~5 years. In this paper we describe the progress of the survey observations in the first observing season, the observing strategy and quality of the data obtained. The observations are carried out on the 4-m VISTA telescope in the ZYJHKs filters. In addition to the multi-band imaging the variability monitoring campaign in the Ks filter has started. Data reduction is carried out using the pipeline at the Cambridge Astronomical Survey Unit. The photometric and astrometric calibration is performed via the numerous 2MASS sources observed in each pointing. The first data release contains the aperture photometry and astrometric catalogues for 348 individual pointings in the ZYJHKs filters taken in the 2010 observing season. The typical image quality is ~0.9-1.0". The stringent photometric and image quality requirements of the survey are satisfied in 100% of the JHKs images in the disk area and 90% of the JHKs images in the bulge area. The completeness in the Z and Y images is 84% in the disk, and 40% in the bulge. The first season catalogues contain 1.28x10^8 stellar sources in the bulge and 1.68x10^8 in the disk area detected in at least one of the photometric bands. The combined, multi-band catalogues contain more than 1.63x10^8 stellar sources. About 10% of these are double detections due to overlap** adjacent pointings. These overlap** multiple detections are used to characterise the quality of the data. The images in the JHKs bands extend typically ~4 mag deeper than 2MASS. The magnitude limit and photometric quality depend strongly on crowding in the inner Galactic regions. The astrometry for Ks=15-18 mag has rms ~35-175 mas. △ Less

The survey will take 1929 hours of observations with the 4-metre VISTA telescope during five years (2010-2014), covering ~10^9 point sources across an area of 520 deg^2, including 33 known globular clusters and ~350 open clusters. The final product will be a deep near-IR atlas in five passbands (0.9-2.5 microns) and a catalogue of more than 10^6 variable point sources. Unlike single-epoch surveys that, in most cases, only produce 2-D maps, the VVV variable star survey will enable the construction of a 3-D map of the surveyed region using well-understood distance indicators such as RR Lyrae stars, and Cepheids. It will yield important information on the ages of the populations. The observations will be combined with data from MACHO, OGLE, EROS, VST, Spitzer, HST, Chandra, INTEGRAL, WISE, Fermi LAT, XMM-Newton, GAIA and ALMA for a complete understanding of the variable sources in the inner Milky Way. This public survey will provide data available to the whole community and therefore will enable further studies of the history of the Milky Way, its globular cluster evolution, and the population census of the Galactic Bulge and center, as well as the investigations of the star forming regions in the disk. The combined variable star catalogues will have important implications for theoretical investigations of pulsation properties of stars. △ Less

Parkes HI observations of galaxies behind the southern Milky Way. II. The Crux and Great Attractor regions (l ~ 289 degree to 338 degree)

Abstract: As part of our programme to map the large-scale distribution of galaxies behind the southern Milky Way, we observed 314 optically-selected, partially-obscured galaxies in the Zone of Avoidance (ZOA) in the Crux and Great Attractor (GA) regions. The observations were conducted with the Parkes 64m radio telescope, in a single-pixel pointed mode, reaching an rms noise level of typically 2-6 mJy ove… ▽ More As part of our programme to map the large-scale distribution of galaxies behind the southern Milky Way, we observed 314 optically-selected, partially-obscured galaxies in the Zone of Avoidance (ZOA) in the Crux and Great Attractor (GA) regions. The observations were conducted with the Parkes 64m radio telescope, in a single-pixel pointed mode, reaching an rms noise level of typically 2-6 mJy over the velocity search range of 400<v<10500km/s. A total of 162 galaxies were detected. This can be explained by the prominence of the GA overdensity in the survey regions, which leads to a relatively higher fraction of nearby galaxies. It is also evident from the quite narrow velocity distribution (largely confined to 3000-6000km/s) and deviates significantly from the expectation of a uniform galaxy distribution for the given sensitivity and velocity range. No systematic differences were found between detections and non-detections, in terms of latitude, foreground extinction, or environment, except for the very central part of the rich Norma cluster, where hardly any galaxies were detected. A detailed investigation of the HI content of the galaxies reveals strong HI deficiency at the core of the Norma cluster (within about a 0.4 Abell radius), similar to what has been found in the Coma cluster. The redshifts obtained by this observing technique result in a substantial reduction of the so-called redshift ZOA. This is obvious when analysing the large-scale structure of the new HI data in combination with data from optical ZOA redshift surveys. The lower latitude detections provide further evidence of the extension of the Norma Wall, across the ZOA, in particular its bending towards the Cen-Crux clusters above the Galactic plane at slightly higher redshift, rather than a straight continuation towards the Centaurus clusters. △ Less

Results: The catalogue, the largest ever made at X-ray wavelengths, contains 246,897 detections drawn from 3491 public XMM-Newton observations over a 7-year interval, which relate to 191,870 unique sources. The catalogue fields cover a sky area of more than 500 sq.deg. The non-overlap** sky area is ~360 sq.deg. (~1% of the sky) as many regions of the sky are observed more than once by XMM-Newton. The catalogue probes a large sky area at the flux limit where the bulk of the objects that contribute to the X-ray background lie and provides a major resource for generating large, well-defined X-ray selected source samples, studying the X-ray source population and identifying rare object types. The highly obscured region around PKS1343-601 - I. Galactic interstellar extinctions using DENIS galaxy colours

Abstract: The highly obscured radio-bright galaxy PKS1343-601 (l=309.7, b=+1.8) has been suspected to mark the centre of a hitherto unknown cluster in the Great Attractor region. As such it presents an ideal region for a search of galaxies in the near-infrared (NIR) and an in-depth study of their colours as a function of extinction. A visual search of a ~30 square-degree area centered on this radio galaxy… ▽ More The highly obscured radio-bright galaxy PKS1343-601 (l=309.7, b=+1.8) has been suspected to mark the centre of a hitherto unknown cluster in the Great Attractor region. As such it presents an ideal region for a search of galaxies in the near-infrared (NIR) and an in-depth study of their colours as a function of extinction. A visual search of a ~30 square-degree area centered on this radio galaxy on images of the NIR DENIS survey (IJK) revealed 83 galaxies (including two AGNs) and 39 possible candidates. Of these, 49 are also listed in the 2MASS Extended Source Catalog 2MASX. Taking the IRAS/DIRBE extinction values (Schlegel et al. 1998) at face value, the absorption in the optical (A_B) ranges from ~2m to over 100m across the Galactic Plane. Comparing the detections with other systematic surveys, we conclude that this search is highly complete up to the detection limits of the DENIS survey and certainly surpasses any automatic galaxy finding algorithm applied to crowded areas. The NIR galaxy colours from the 7" aperture were used as a probe to measure total Galactic extinction. A comparison with the IRAS/DIRBE Galactic reddening maps suggests that the IRAS/DIRBE values result in a slight overestimate of the true extinction at such low Galactic latitudes; the inferred extinction from the galaxy colours corresponds to about 87% of the IRAS/DIRBE extinctions. Although this determination still shows some scatter, it proves the usefulness of NIR surveys for calibrating the IRAS/DIRBE maps in the extinction range of 2m < A_B < 12m. △ Less

4U 1344-60: a bright intermediate Seyfert galaxy at z=0.012 with a relativistic Fe Kalpha emission line

Abstract: We present analysis of the optical and X-ray spectra of the low Galactic latitude bright (F(2-10) = 3.6 10^{-11} erg/cm2/s) source 4U 1344-60. On the basis of the optical data we propose to classify 4U 1344-60 as an intermediate type Seyfert galaxy and we measure a value of z=0.012+/-0.001 for its redshift. From the XMM-Newton observation we find that the overall X-ray spectral shape of 4U 1344-60 is complex and can be described by a power-law continuum (Gamma ~ 1.55) obscured by two neutral absorption components (Nh(f) ~ 10^{22} cm^{-2} and Nh(p) ~ 4 10^{22} cm^{-2}), the latter covering only the ~50% of the primary X-ray source. The X-ray data therefore lend support to our classification of 4U 1344-60. It exhibits a broad and skewed Fe Kalpha line at 6.4 keV, which suggests the existence of an accretion disk that is able to reprocess the primary continuum down to a few gravitational radii. Such a line represents one of the clearest examples of a relativistic line observed by XMM-Newton so far. Peculiar velocities in the Zone of Avoidance: Determining the Distance to the Norma cluster

Abstract: Deep J, H and Ks photometry of the low Galactic latitude Norma cluster has been obtained with the 1.4-m Infrared Survey Facility (IRSF) and with SOFI on the NTT. Together with spectroscopy taken at the Anglo-Australian Observatory using 2dF, the near-infrared Fundamental Plane of the Norma cluster will be used to determine the distance to this cluster and to assess its location within the Great… ▽ More Deep J, H and Ks photometry of the low Galactic latitude Norma cluster has been obtained with the 1.4-m Infrared Survey Facility (IRSF) and with SOFI on the NTT. Together with spectroscopy taken at the Anglo-Australian Observatory using 2dF, the near-infrared Fundamental Plane of the Norma cluster will be used to determine the distance to this cluster and to assess its location within the Great Attractor overdensity. Potential systematic uncertainties related to the determination of peculiar velocities in the Zone of Avoidance are discussed in some detail. In particular the effects (uncertainties, systematics and scatter) of extinction and star-crowding on the derived magnitudes at low latitudes are investigated in great detail. We present a first look at the emerging Ks-band Fundamental Plane of the Norma cluster. We expect an uncertainty of ~ 3% (~ 150 km/s at the distance of the Norma cluster) in our final Fundamental Plane distance estimate based on 76 galaxies. △ Less

Abstract: As part of our program to map the large-scale distribution of galaxies behind the Milky Way, we used the Parkes 210 ft (64 m) radio telescope for pointed HI observations of a sample of low surface-brightness (due to heavy obscuration) spiral galaxies selected from the deep optical Zone of Avoidance (ZOA) galaxy catalog in the Hydra/Antlia region (Kraan-Korteweg 2000a). Searching a simultaneous v… ▽ More As part of our program to map the large-scale distribution of galaxies behind the Milky Way, we used the Parkes 210 ft (64 m) radio telescope for pointed HI observations of a sample of low surface-brightness (due to heavy obscuration) spiral galaxies selected from the deep optical Zone of Avoidance (ZOA) galaxy catalog in the Hydra/Antlia region (Kraan-Korteweg 2000a). Searching a simultaneous velocity range of either 300 to 5500 km/s or 300 to 10500 km/s to an rms level of typically 2 - 4 mJy resulted in detections in 61 of the 139 pointings, leading to a total of 66 detections (an additional detection was made in a reference position, and two other pointings revealed two and four independent signals respectively). Except for 2 strong HI emitters identified in the shallow Zone of Avoidance HI survey (Henning et al. 2000), all HI detections are new. An analysis of the properties of the observed and detected galaxies prove that pointed HI observations of highly obscured galaxies allow the tracing of a population of nearby, intrinsically large and bright spiral galaxies that otherwise would not be recovered. The new data identified a previously unrecognized nearby group at l=287.5, b=-9.5, V=1700 km/s, the continuation of the Hydra/Antlia filament on the opposite side of the Galactic plane, and helped to delimit a distinct void in the ZOA centered at 2000 km/s. △ Less
