Ab initio computation of the transition temperature of the charge density wave transition in TiSe2
Abstract: We present a density functional perturbation theory approach to estimate the transition temperature of the charge density wave transition of TiSe2. The softening of the phonon mode at the L-point where in TiSe2 a giant Kohn anomaly occurs, and the energy difference between the normal and distorted phase are analyzed. Both features are studied as function of the electronic temperature, which corres… ▽ More

Ab initio energy landscape of LiF clusters
Abstract: A global search for possible LiF cluster structures is performed, up to (LiF)8. The method is based on simulated annealing, where all the energies are evaluated on the ab initio level. In addition, the threshold algorithm is employed to determine the energy barriers for the transitions among these structures, for the cluster (LiF)4, again on the ab initio level; and the corresponding tree graph is… ▽ More

Structure prediction based on ab initio simulated annealing for boron nitride
Abstract: Possible crystalline modifications of chemical compounds at low temperatures correspond to local minima of the energy landscape. Determining these minima via simulated annealing is one method for the prediction of crystal structures, where the number of atoms per unit cell is the only information used. It is demonstrated that this method can be applied to covalent systems, at the example of boro… ▽ More

Global exploration of the energy landscape of solids on the ab initio level
Abstract: Predicting which crystalline modifications can be present in a chemical system requires the global exploration of its energy landscape. Due to the large computational effort involved, in the past this search for sufficiently stable minima has been performed employing a variety of empirical potentials and cost functions followed by a local optimization on the ab initio level. However, this entail… ▽ More

Non-equilbrium Dynamics in Amorphous Si_3B_3N_7
Abstract: We present extensive numerical investigations of the structural relaxation dynamics of a realistic model of the amorphous high-temperature ceramic a-Si$_3$B$_3$N$_7$, probing the mean square displacement (MSD) of the atoms, the bond survival probability (BSP), the average energy, the specific heat, and the two-point energy average. Combining the information from these different sources, we ident… ▽ More

Disordered systems on various time scales: a-Si3B3N7 and homogeneous sintering
Abstract: Modeling of materials systems for long times commonly requires the use of separation of time scale methods. We discuss this general approach and present two example systems, a-Si3B3N7 and the generation of homogeneous sinters.

Non-equilibrium dynamics in amorphous Si3B3N7
Abstract: We present numerical investigations of the dynamics on the energy landscape of a realistic model of the high-temperature ceramic a-Si3B3N7. Below a critical temperature Tc = 2000 K, the system is no longer in equilibrium, and we predict that the material has a glass transition in this temperature range at high pressure. Analyzing the two-time energy correlation function shows aging in this syste… ▽ More

Modelling of Si-B-N ceramics
Abstract: We present results of computer simulations of amorphous Si3B3N7 ceramics. The computed pair correlation functions are in agreement with the experimental results. Regarding the structural properties of the B-N, Si-N and N-Si/B coordination spheres, our results are in full agreement with experimental data. We confirm that silicon is tetrahedrally coordinated by nitrogen, and boron is trigonally pl… ▽ More

Energy and entropy of metastable states in glassy systems
Abstract: We investigate the multi-valley energy landscape of a 3-D on-lattice network model for covalent glasses, numerically determining the shape of the valleys, the local density of states, the density of minima and the local connectivity. We present some of these quantities in a graphical birds-eye view of the landscape, and discuss their implications for the relaxation dynamics and cooling behavior… ▽ More

The lid method for exhaustive exploration of metastable states of complex systems
Abstract: The `lid' algorithm performs an exhaustive exploration of neighborhoods of local energy minima of energy landscapes. This paper describes an implementation of the algorithm, including issues of parallel performance and scalability. To illustrate the versatility of the approach and to stress the common features present in landscapes of quite different systems, we present selected results for 1) a… ▽ More

Properties of the energy landscape of network models for covalent glasses
Abstract: We investigate the energy landscape of two dimensional network models for covalent glasses by means of the lid algorithm. For three different particle densities and for a range of network sizes, we exhaustively analyse many configuration space regions enclosing deep-lying energy minima. We extract the local densities of states and of minima, and the number of states and minima accessible below a… ▽ More
