Inspired by the notion that physical systems can contain only a finite amount of information or complexity, we introduce a framework that allows for quantifying the amount of logical information needed to specify a function or set. We then apply this methodology to a variety of physical systems and derive the complexity of parameter-dependent physical observables and coupling functions appearing in effective Lagrangians. In order to implement these ideas, it is essential to consider physical theories that can be defined in an o-minimal structure. O-minimality, a concept from mathematical logic, encapsulates a tameness principle. It was recently argued that this property is inherent to many known quantum field theories and is linked to the UV completion of the theory. To assign a complexity to each statement in these theories one has to further constrain the allowed o-minimal structures. To exemplify this, we show that many physical systems can be formulated using Pfaffian o-minimal structures, which have a well-established notion of complexity. More generally, we propose adopting sharply o-minimal structures, recently introduced by Binyamini and Novikov, as an overarching framework to measure complexity in quantum theories.

We study periods in an integral basis near all possible singularities in one-dimensional complex structure moduli spaces of Calabi-Yau threefolds. Near large complex structure points these asymptotic periods are well understood in terms of the topological data of the mirror Calabi-Yau manifold. The aim of this work is to characterize the period data near other boundaries in moduli space such as conifold and K-points. Using results from Hodge theory, we provide the general form of these periods in a quantized three-cycle basis. Based on these periods we compute the prepotential and related physical couplings of the underlying supergravity theory. Moreover, we elucidate the meaning of the model-dependent coefficients that appear in these expressions: these can be identified with certain topological and arithmetic numbers associated to the singular geometry at the moduli space boundary. We illustrate our findings by studying a wide set of examples.

Tame geometry originated in mathematical logic and implements strong finiteness properties by defining the notion of tame sets and functions. In part I we argued that observables in a wide class of quantum field theories are tame functions and that the tameness of a theory relies on its UV definition. The aims of this work are (1) to formalize the connection between quantum field theories and logical structures, and (2) to investigate the tameness of conformal field theories. To address the first aim, we start from a set of quantum field theories and explain how they define a logical structure that is subsequently extended to a second structure by adding physical observables. Tameness, or o-minimality, of the two structures is then a well-defined property, and sharp statements can be made by identifying these with known examples in mathematics. For the second aim we quantify our expectations on the tameness of the set of conformal field theories and effective theories that can be coupled to quantum gravity. We formulate tameness conjectures about conformal field theory observables and propose universal constraints that render spaces of conformal field theories to be tame sets. We test these conjectures in several examples and highlight first implications.

We propose a generalized finiteness principle for physical theories, in terms of the concept of tameness in mathematical logic. A tame function or space can only have a finite amount of structure, in a precise sense which we explain. Tameness generalizes the notion of an analytic function to include certain non-analytic limits, and we show that this includes many limits which are known to arise in physics. For renormalizable quantum field theories, we give a general proof that amplitudes at each order in the loop expansion are tame functions of the external momenta and the couplings. We then consider a variety of exact non-perturbative results and show that they are tame but only given constraints on the UV definition of the theory. This provides further evidence for the recent conjecture of the second author that all effective theories that can be coupled to quantum gravity are tame. We also discuss whether renormalization group flow is tame, and comment on the applicability of our results to effective theories.

We study the symmetric square of Picard-Fuchs operators of genus one curves and the thereby induced generalized Clausen identities. This allows the computation of analytic expressions for the periods of all one-parameter K3 manifolds in terms of elliptic integrals. The resulting expressions are globally valid throughout the moduli space and allow the explicit inversion of the mirror map and the exact computation of distances, useful for checks of the Swampland Distance Conjecture. We comment on the generalization to multi-parameter models and provide a two-parameter example.

Many analyses in high energy physics are limited due to missing kinematic information of known invisible particles in the detector, for example neutrinos. The undetected particle carries away momentum and energy information, preventing the full reconstruction of such an event. In this paper, we present a method to handle this missing information, referred to as the Generalised Known Kinematics (GKK) approach. It is based on constructing event-by-event probability density distributions that describe the physically allowed kinematics of an event. For GKK we take into account the available kinematic information and constraints given by the assumed final state. Summing these event-wise distributions over large data sets allows the determination of parameters that influence the event kinematics, such as particle masses, which are otherwise obscured by the missing information on the invisible final-state particles. The method is demonstrated in simulation studies with $τ^+ τ^-$ events in $e^+ e^-$ collisions at the $Υ$(4S) resonance, presenting a new, promising approach for the measurement of the $τ$ lepton mass.

A theory of a similar type was proposed as the effective theory in the high energy phase of non-critical M-theory in 3D. With some details differing from the usual string theory story, it is found that the resulting effective theory, namely topologically massive gravity, fits well into the web of the proposed swampland conjectures. Supporting a recent proposal, in particular we find that this 3D theory gives rise to a quantum break time that scales like $t_Q\sim H^{-1}$.

We investigate string-phenomenological questions of Hull's exotic superstring theories with Euclidean strings/branes and multiple times. These are known to be plagued by pathologies like the occurrence of ghosts. On the other hand, these theories exhibit de Sitter solutions. Our special focus lies on the question of the coexistence of such de Sitter solutions and ghost-free brane worlds. To this end, the world-sheet CFT description of Euclidean fundamental strings is generalized to include also the open string/D-brane sector. Demanding that in the "observable" gauge theory sector the gauge fields themselves are non-ghosts, a generalization of the dS swampland conjecture is found.

The KKLT scenario in a warped throat, if consistent, provides a concrete counterexample to both the AdS scale separation and the dS swampland conjectures. First, we define and analyze the relevant effective field theory for the conifold modulus and the overall Kaehler modulus that both have exponentially small masses. The scalar potential still admits KKLT-like AdS and dS minima. Second, we critically analyze the reliability of the employed Wilsonian effective action by evaluating the masses of light modes localized in the warped throat. The resulting mass spectrum is discussed with respect to the swampland distance conjecture. We find the recently observed emergent nature of the latter not only at large distance points but also at the conifold point motivating a general extension of it. In this respect, KKLT and trans-Planckian field distance are on equal footing. It is pointed out that the reliability of the KKLT minimum will depend on how this emergent behavior is interpreted.

Different techniques from machine learning are applied to the problem of computing line bundle cohomologies of (hypersurfaces in) toric varieties. While a naive approach of training a neural network to reproduce the cohomologies fails in the general case, by inspecting the underlying functional form of the data we propose a second approach. The cohomologies depend in a piecewise polynomial way on the line bundle charges. We use unsupervised learning to separate the different polynomial phases. The result is an analytic formula for the cohomologies. This can be turned into an algorithm for computing analytic expressions for arbitrary (hypersurfaces in) toric varieties.

The Swampland Distance Conjecture claims that effective theories derived from a consistent theory of quantum gravity only have a finite range of validity. This will imply drastic consequences for string theory model building. The refined version of this conjecture says that this range is of the order of the naturally built in scale, namely the Planck scale. It is investigated whether the Refined Swampland Distance Conjecture is consistent with proper field distances arising in the well understood moduli spaces of Calabi-Yau compactification. Investigating in particular the non-geometric phases of Kahler moduli spaces of dimension $h^{11}\in\{1,2,101\}$, we always found proper field distances that are smaller than the Planck-length.
