Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the asymptotic behaviour in the spirit of $Γ$-convergence of BMO-type functionals related to the total variation of a function $u$. Moreover, we deal with a minimization problem coming from applications in image processing.

Quantum utility has been severely limited in superconducting quantum hardware until now by the modest number of qubits and the relatively high level of control and readout errors, due to the intentional coupling with the external environment required for manipulation and readout of the qubit states. Practical applications in the Noisy Intermediate Scale Quantum (NISQ) era rely on Quantum Error Mitigation (QEM) techniques, which are able to improve the accuracy of the expectation values of quantum observables by implementing classical post-processing analysis from an ensemble of repeated noisy quantum circuit runs. In this work, we focus on a recent QEM technique that uses Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) clustering to specifically identify measurement error patterns. For the first time, we report a proof-of-principle validation of the technique on a 2-qubit register, obtained as a subset of a real NISQ 5-qubit superconducting quantum processor based on transmon qubits. We demonstrate that the FCM-based QEM technique allows for reasonable improvement of the expectation values of single- and two-qubit gates based quantum circuits, without necessarily invoking state-of-the-art coherence, gate, and readout fidelities.

An optical waveplate rotating light polarization can be modeled as a single-qubit unitary operator, whose action can be experimentally determined via quantum process tomography. Standard approaches to tomographic problems rely on the maximum-likelihood estimation, providing the most likely transformation to yield the same outcomes as a set of experimental projective measurements. The performances of this method strongly depend on the number of input measurements and the numerical minimization routine that is adopted. Here we investigate the application of genetic and machine learning approaches to this problem, finding that both allow for accurate reconstructions and fast operations when processing a set of projective measurements very close to the minimal one. We apply these techniques to the case of space-dependent polarization transformations, providing an experimental characterization of the optical action of spin-orbit metasurfaces having patterned birefringence. Our efforts thus expand the toolbox of methodologies for optical process tomography. In particular, we find that the neural network-based scheme provides a significant speed-up, that may be critical in applications requiring a characterization in real-time. We expect these results to lay the groundwork for the optimization of tomographic approaches in more general quantum processes, including non-unitary gates and operations in higher-dimensional Hilbert spaces.

Abstract:
Let $Ω\subseteq\mathcal{R}^2$ be a domain, let $X$ be a rearrangement invariant space and let $f\in W^{1}X(Ω,\mathcal{R}^2)$ be a homeomorphism between $Ω$ and $f(Ω)$. Then there exists a sequence of diffeomorphisms $f_k$ converging to $f$ in the space $W^{1}X(Ω,\mathcal{R}^2)$.

Abstract:
We obtain the rectifiability of the graph of a bounded variation homeomorphism $f$ in the plane and relations between gradients of $f$ and its inverse.
Further, we show an example of a bounded variation homeomorphism $f$ in the plane which satisfies the $(N)$ and $(N^{-1})$ properties and strict positivity of Jacobian of both itself and its inverse, but neither $f$ nor $f^{-1}$ is Sobolev.

We apply this result, and some results obtained previously by one of the authors, to the function space $\mathcal{B}$ introduced recently by Bourgain, Brezis, and Mironescu. This yields an atomic decomposition of the predual $\mathcal{B}_\ast$, the biduality result that $\mathcal{B}_0^\ast = \mathcal{B}_\ast$ and $\mathcal{B}_\ast^\ast = \mathcal{B}$, and a formula for the distance from an element $f \in \mathcal{B}$ to $\mathcal{B}_0$.
