A stellar occultation by Neptune's main satellite, Triton, was observed on 5 October 2017 from Europe, North Africa, and the USA. We derived 90 light curves from this event, 42 of which yielded a central flash detection.
We aimed at constraining Triton's atmospheric structure and the seasonal variations of its atmospheric pressure since the Voyager 2 epoch (1989). We also derived the shape of the lower atmosphere from central flash analysis. We used Abel inversions and direct ray-tracing code to provide the density, pressure, and temperature profiles in the altitude range $\sim$8 km to $\sim$190 km, corresponding to pressure levels from 9 μbar down to a few nanobars.
Results. (i) A pressure of 1.18$\pm$0.03 μbar is found at a reference radius of 1400 km (47 km altitude). (ii) A new analysis of the Voyager 2 radio science occultation shows that this is consistent with an extrapolation of pressure down to the surface pressure obtained in 1989. (iii) A survey of occultations obtained between 1989 and 2017 suggests that an enhancement in surface pressure as reported during the 1990s might be real, but debatable, due to very few high S/N light curves and data accessible for reanalysis. The volatile transport model analysed supports a moderate increase in surface pressure, with a maximum value around 2005-2015 no higher than 23 μbar. The pressures observed in 1995-1997 and 2017 appear mutually inconsistent with the volatile transport model presented here. (iv) The central flash structure does not show evidence of an atmospheric distortion. We find an upper limit of 0.0011 for the apparent oblateness of the atmosphere near the 8 km altitude.

We present a long-term optical spectroscopic study of the post-AGB binary system 89 Herculis, with the aim to characterize the relationship between photospheric instabilities and dynamics in the close circumstellar environment of the system. This study is based on spectra acquired with the high-resolution Catania Astrophysical Observatory Spectropolarimeter and archive data, covering a time interval between 1978 and 2018. We find long-term changes in the radial velocity curve of the system, occurring mostly in amplitude, which correlate with the variability observed in the blue-shifted absorption component of the P Cygni like H$α$ profile. Two possible scenarios are discussed. We also find strong splitting in the s-process elements of \ion{Ba}{ii} $6141.713$ Å and $6496.898$ Å\,lines, with short-term morphological variations. A Gaussian decomposition of such profiles allows us to distinguish four shell components, two expanding and two in-falling toward the central star, which are subject to the orbital motion of the system and are not affected by the long-term instabilities. Finally, we find that the numerous metal lines in emission could originate in regions of a structured circumbinary disk that have sizes proportional to the energy of the corresponding upper level transition $\rm E_{up}$. This study demonstrates the potential of long-term high-resolution spectroscopy in linking together the instability processes occurring during the late evolutionary stages of post-AGBs and the subsequent phase of PNe.

The interacting binary Eta Carinae remains one of the most enigmatic massive stars in our Galaxy despite over four centuries of observations. In this work, its light curve from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared is analysed using spatially resolved HST observations and intense monitoring at the La Plata Observatory, combined with previously published photometry. We have developed a method to separate the central stellar object in the ground-based images using HST photometry and applying it to the more numerous ground-based data, which supports the hypothesis that the central source is brightening faster than the almost-constant Homunculus. After detrending from long-term brightening, the light curve shows periodic orbital modulation ($ΔV$ $\sim$ 0.6 mag) attributed to the wind-wind collision cavity as it sweeps around the primary star and it shows variable projected area to our line-of-sight. Two quasi-periodic components with time scales of 2-3 and 8-10 yr and low amplitude, $ΔV$ $<$ 0.2 mag, are superimposed on the brightening light-curve, being the only stellar component of variability found, which indicates minimal stellar instability. Moreover, the light curve analysis shows no evidence of `shell ejections' at periastron. We propose that the long-term brightening of the stellar core is due to the dissipation of a dusty clump in front of the central star, which works like a natural coronagraph. Thus, the central stars appear to be more stable than previously thought since the dominant variability originates from a changing circumstellar medium. We predict that the brightening phase, due mainly to dust dissipation, will be completed around 2032 $\pm$ 4 yr, when the star will be brighter than in the 1600's by up to $ΔV$ $\sim$ 1 mag.

The presence of systematic modulations in the colour distributions in composite samples of globular clusters associated with galaxies in the Virgo and Fornax clusters has been reported in a previous work. In this paper we focus on the 27 brightest galaxies in Virgo, and in particular on NGC 4486, the dominant system in terms of globular cluster population. The new analysis includes $\sim$7600 cluster candidates brighter than g =24.5 (or T1$\sim$ 23.70). The results indicate the presence of the characteristic Virgo pattern in these galaxies and that this pattern is detectable over a galactocentric range from 3 to 30 Kpc in N GC 4486. This finding gives more support to the idea that the pattern has been the result of an external, still not identified phenomenon, capable of synchronizing the cluster formation in a kind of viral process, and on supra-galactic scales (also having, presumably, an impact on the overall star formation history in the entire Virgo cluster).

We studied the polarised spectrum of the post-AGB binary system 89\,Herculis on the basis of data collected with the high resolution \emph{Catania Astrophysical Observatory Spectropolarimeter}, \emph{HArps-North POlarimeter} and \emph{Echelle SpectroPolarimetric Device for the Observation of Stars}. We find the existence of linear polarisation in the strongest metal lines in absorption and with low excitation potentials. Signals are characterized by complex Q and U morphologies varying with the orbital period. As possible origin of this "Second Solar Spectrum"-like behaviour, we rule out magnetic fields, continuum depolarisation due pulsations and hot spots. { The linear polarisation we detected also in the Ca{\sc ii}\,8662Å\, line is a clear evidence of optical pum** polarisation and it rules out the scattering polarisation from free electrons of the circumbinary environment.} In the framework of optical pum** due to the secondary star, the observed periodic properties of the spectral line polarisation can be justied by two jets, flow velocity of few tens of km\,s$^{-1}$, at the basis of that hour-glass structure characterising 89\,Herculis. We also discovered linear polarisation across the emission profile of metal lines. Numerical simulations show that these polarised profiles could be formed in an undisrupted circumbinary disk rotating at $\le$10 km\,s$^{-1}$ and whose orientation in the sky is in agreement with optical and radio interferometric results. We conclude that the study of those aspherical enevlopes, whose origin is not yet completely understood, of PNe and already present in the post-AGB's, can benefit of high resolution spectropolarimetry and that this technique can shape envelopes still too far for interferometry.

We used deep Gemini-South/GMOS g'r'i'z' images to study the globular cluster (GC) system of the massive elliptical galaxy NGC 1395, located in the Eridanus supergroup. The photometric analysis of the GC candidates reveals a clear colour bimodality distribution, indicating the presence of "blue" and "red" GC subpopulations. While a negative radial colour gradient is detected in the projected spatial distribution of the red GCs, the blue GCs display a shallow colour gradient. The blue GCs also display a remarkable shallow and extended surface density profile, suggesting a significant accretion of low-mass satellites in the outer halo of the galaxy. In addition, the slope of the projected spatial distribution of the blue GCs in the outer regions of the galaxy, is similar to that of the X-ray halo emission. Integrating up to 165 kpc the profile of the projected spatial distribution of the GCs, we estimated a total GC population and specific frequency of 6000$\pm$1100 and $S_N$=7.4$\pm$1.4, respectively. Regarding NGC 1395 itself, the analysis of the deep Gemini/GMOS images shows a low surface brightness umbrella-like structure indicating, at least, one recent merger event. Through relations recently published in the literature, we obtained global parameters, such as $M_\mathrm{stellar}=9.32\times10^{11}$ M$\odot$ and $M_h=6.46\times10^{13}$ M$\odot$. Using public spectroscopic data, we derive stellar population parameters of the central region of the galaxy by the full spectral fitting technique. We have found that, this region, seems to be dominated for an old stellar population, in contrast to findings of young stellar populations from the literature.

A method for the determination of integrated longitudinal stellar fields from low-resolution spectra is the so-called slope method, which is based on the regression of the Stokes V signal against the first derivative of Stokes I. Here we investigate the possibility to extend this technique to measure the magnetic fields of cool stars from high resolution spectra. For this purpose we developed a multi-line modification to the slope method, called multi-line slope method. We tested this technique by analysing synthetic spectra computed with the COSSAM code and real observations obtained with the high resolution spectropolarimeters Narval, HARPSpol and Catania Astrophysical Observatory Spectropolarimeter (CAOS). We show that the multi-line slope method is a fast alternative to the Least Squares Deconvolution (LSD) technique for the measurement of the effective magnetic fields of cool stars. Using a Fourier transform on the effective magnetic field variations of the star $ε$ Eri, we find that the long term periodicity of the field corresponds to the 2.95 yr period of the stellar dynamo, revealed by the variation of the activity index.

Direct measurements of the stellar magnetic fields are based on the splitting of spectral lines into polarized Zeeman components. With few exceptions, Zeeman signatures are hidden in data noise and a number of methods have been developed to measure the average, over the visible stellar disk, of longitudinal components of the magnetic field. As to faint stars, at present observable only with low resolution spectropolarimetry, a method is based on the regression of the Stokes V signal against the first derivative of Stokes I. Here we present an extension of this method to obtain a direct measurement of the transverse component of stellar magnetic fields by the regression of high resolution Stokes Q and U as a function of the second derivative of Stokes I. We also show that it is possible to determine the orientation in the sky of the rotation axis of a star on the basis of the periodic variability of the transverse component due to its rotation. The method is applied to data, obtained with the Catania Astrophysical Observatory Spectropolarimeter, along the rotational period of the well known magnetic star \b{eta} CrB.

In this work we use the semi-empirical atmospheric modeling method to obtain the chro-mospheric temperature, pressure, density and magnetic field distribution versus height in the K2 primary component of the RS CVn binary system HR 7428. While temperature, pressure, density are the standard output of the semi-empirical modeling technique, the chromospheric magnetic field estimation versus height comes from considering the possibility of not im-posing hydrostatic equilibrium in the semi-empirical computation. The stability of the best non-hydrostatic equilibrium model, implies the presence of an additive (toward the center of the star) pressure, that decreases in strength from the base of the chromosphere toward the outer layers. Interpreting the additive pressure as magnetic pressure we estimated a magnetic field intensity of about 500 gauss at the base of the chromosphere.

Although their origin is still subject of debate, the most popular scenarios suggest that they are massive star clusters or the nuclei of tidally stripped dwarf galaxies. Aims. NGC 5044 is the central massive elliptical galaxy of the NGC 5044 group. Its GC/UCD system is completely unexplored. Methods. In Gemini+GMOS deep images of several fields around NGC 5044 and in spectroscopic multi-object data of one of these fields, we detected an unresolved source with g'~20.6 mag, compatible with being an UCD. Its radial velocity was obtained with FXCOR and the penalized pixel-fitting (pPXF) code. To study its stellar population content, we measured the Lick/IDS indices and compared them with predictions of single stellar population models, and we used the full spectral fitting technique. Results. The spectroscopic analysis of the UCD revealed a radial velocity that agrees with the velocity of the elliptical galaxy NGC 5044. From the Lick/IDS indices, we have obtained a luminosity-weighted age and metallicity of 11.7+/-1.4 Gyr and [Z/H] = -0.79 +/- 0.04 dex, respectively, as well as [alpha/Fe] = 0.30 +/- 0.06. From the full spectral fitting technique, we measured a lower age (8.52 Gyr) and a similar total metallicity ([Z/H] = -0.86 dex). Conclusions. Our results indicate that NGC 5044-UCD1 is most likely an extreme GC (MV ~ -12.5 mag) belonging to the GC system of the elliptical galaxy NGC 5044.

We present the chemical abundance analysis of 19 upper main-sequence stars of the young open cluster NGC 6250 (log t ~ 7.42 yr). This work is part of a project aimed at setting observational constraints on the theory of atomic diffusion in stellar photospheres, by means of a systematic study of the abundances of the chemical elements of early F-, A- and late B-type stars of well-determined age. Our data set consists of low-, medium- and high-resolution spectra obtained with the Fibre Large Array Multi Element Spectrograph (FLAMES) instrument of the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). To perform our analysis, we have developed a new suite of software tools for the chemical abundance analysis of stellar photospheres in local thermodynamical equilibrium. Together with the chemical composition of the stellar photospheres, we have provided new estimates of the cluster mean radial velocity, proper motion, refined the cluster membership, and we have given the stellar parameters including masses and fractional age. We find no evidence of statistically significant correlation between any of the parameters, including abundance and cluster age, except perhaps for an increase in Ba abundance with cluster age. We have proven that our new software tool may be successfully used for the chemical abundance analysis of large data sets of stellar spectra.
