We propose a hybrid feedback control scheme for the autonomous robot navigation problem in three-dimensional environments with arbitrarily-shaped convex obstacles. The proposed hybrid control strategy, which consists in switching between the move-to-target mode and the obstacle-avoidance mode, guarantees global asymptotic stability of the target location in the obstacle-free workspace. We also provide a procedure for the implementation of the proposed hybrid controller in a priori unknown environments and validate its effectiveness through simulation results.

We develop an autonomous navigation algorithm for a robot operating in two-dimensional environments containing obstacles, with arbitrary non-convex shapes, which can be in close proximity with each other, as long as there exists at least one safe path connecting the initial and the target location. An instrumental transformation that modifies (virtually) the non-convex obstacles, in a non-conservative manner, is introduced to facilitate the design of the obstacle-avoidance strategy. The proposed navigation approach relies on a hybrid feedback that guarantees global asymptotic stabilization of a target location while ensuring the forward invariance of the modified obstacle-free workspace. The proposed hybrid feedback controller guarantees Zeno-free switching between the move-to-target mode and the obstacle-avoidance mode based on the proximity of the robot with respect to the modified obstacle-occupied workspace. Finally, we provide an algorithmic procedure for the sensor-based implementation of the proposed hybrid controller and validate its effectiveness via some numerical simulations.

We present a three-dimensional (3-D) visualization of jet geometry using numerical methods based on a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) and limited memory Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) optimized algorithm. Our aim is to visualize the 3-D geometry of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) jet using observations, which are inherently two-dimensional (2-D) images. Many AGN jets display complex structures that include hotspots and bends. The structure of these bends in the jet's frame may appear quite different than what we see in the sky frame, where it is transformed by our particular viewing geometry. The knowledge of the intrinsic structure will be helpful in understanding the appearance of the magnetic field and hence emission and particle acceleration processes over the length of the jet. We present the $JetCurry$ algorithm to visualize the jet's 3-D geometry from its 2-D image. We discuss the underlying geometrical framework and outline the method used to decompose the 2-D image. We report the results of our 3-D visualization of the jet of M87, using the test case of the knot D region. Our 3-D visualization is broadly consistent with the expected double helical magnetic field structure of the knot D region of the jet. We also discuss the next steps in the development of the $JetCurry$ algorithm.

We develop an autonomous navigation algorithm for a robot operating in two-dimensional environments cluttered with obstacles having arbitrary convex shapes. The proposed navigation approach relies on a hybrid feedback to guarantee global asymptotic stabilization of the robot towards a predefined target location while ensuring the forward invariance of the obstacle-free workspace. The main idea consists in designing an appropriate switching strategy between the move-to-target mode and the obstacle-avoidance mode based on the proximity of the robot with respect to the nearest obstacle. The proposed hybrid controller generates continuous velocity input trajectories when the robot is initialized away from the boundaries of the unsafe regions. Finally, we provide an algorithmic procedure for the sensor-based implementation of the proposed hybrid controller and validate its effectiveness through some simulation results.

The intrinsic nature of many astronomical objects, such as binary systems, exoplanets, circumstellar and debris disks, and quasar host galaxies, introduces challenging requirements for observational instrumentation and techniques. In each case, we encounter situations where the light from bright sources hampers our ability to detect surrounding fainter targets. To explore all features of such astronomical scenes, we must perform observations at the maximum possible contrast ratios. Charge-injection devices (CIDs) are capable of potentially exceeding contrast ratios of $\log_{10}{(CR)} > 9$ (i.e., 1 part in 1 billion) due to their unique readout architectures and inherent anti-blooming abilities. The on-sky testing of the latest generation of CIDs, the SpectraCAM XDR, has previously demonstrated direct contrast ratios in excess of 1 part in 20 million from sub-optimal ground-based astronomical observations that imposed practical limits on the maximum achievable contrast ratios. Here, we demonstrate the extreme contrast ratio imaging capabilities of the SXDR using observations of Sirius with the 1.0-m Jacobus Kapteyn Telescope, La Palma, Spain. Based on wavelet-based analysis and precise photometric and astrometric calibrations, we report a direct contrast ratio of $Δm_r = 18.54$, $\log_{10}{(CR)} = 7.41 \pm 0.08$, or $1$ part in $26$ million. This shows a $29\%$ increase in the achievable contrast ratios compared to the previous results.

The constrained multi-agent optimization problem of distributed resource allocation is addressed using the evolutionary game theoretic framework. The issue of building temperature control is analyzed in which the controller is to devise a scheme to distribute available scarce power to every room to regulate their temperature as per the comfort of user in the best possible manner. The paper correlates the global constraint of fixed resource amount with the constant population size. The respective population game is evaluated by means of a dynamical model of the evolutionary game theory to find the necessary control action. The robustness of optimal solution with respect to minor fluctuations in the temperature distribution is characterized using evolutionary stable strategy ( ESS ). Along with the global constraint, the problem formulation constitutes local constraint over an individual control unit located in every room. The classical dynamical models of evolutionary game theory such as replicator dynamics, logit dynamics, etc. fail to incorporate respective constraints. With the escort evolutionary dynamical (ED) model it is possible to address these local constraints through the concept of the intersection of simplices. However, evaluation of these classical dynamics along with ED is driven by expected payoff obtained by the overall population, which renders a centralized implementation approach. To mitigate this central dependency a distributed version of the ED model referred to as distributed escort dynamics (DED) is proposed. The control action devised adopting DED approach is shown to provide smooth trajectory tracking along with the low start-up transience when compared with distributed interior point (DIP) method.

Models of multi-agent systems can be found all around us. One of the objectives of multi-agent systems is to define local control laws in order to achieve a desired global state of the system. This paper utilises the concept of Distributed Resource Allocation (DRA) approach for successful incorporation of a large number of Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs) with the power grid. DRA approach is implemented using the concept of achieving output consensus. A fixed number of PEVs are considered which are connected to the grid for a certain time interval. The PEV batteries can be charged as well discharged during this time interval. Charging and discharging of PEVs from the grid is further divided into time slots and are coined as strategies. The goal of this paper is to obtain a well-inclined charging strategy for each PEV connected to the grid such that it satisfies the power grid objective in terms of the smoothening factor of grid load profile.
