Bipolar disorder (BD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) are two chronic mental health conditions that clinicians find challenging to distinguish based on clinical interviews, due to their overlap** symptoms. In this work, we investigate the automatic detection of these two conditions by modelling both verbal and non-verbal cues in a set of interviews. We propose a new approach of modelling short-term features with visibility-signature transform, and compare it with widely used high-level statistical functions. We demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed signature-based model. Furthermore, we show the role of different sets of features in characterising BD and BPD.

AgCl-induced hot salt stress corrosion cracking in a titanium alloy

The mechanism of AgCl-induced stress corrosion cracking of Ti-6246 was examined at \SI{500}{\mega\pascal} and \SI{380}{\celsius} for \SI{24}{\hour} exposures. SEM and STEM-EDX examination of a FIB-sectioned blister and crack showed that metallic Ag was formed and migrated along the crack. The mechanism of AgCl-induced stress corrosion cracking of Ti-6246 was examined at \SI{500}{\mega\pascal} and \SI{380}{\celsius} for \SI{24}{\hour} exposures. SEM and STEM-EDX examination of a FIB-sectioned blister and crack showed that metallic Ag was formed and migrated along the crack. TEM analysis also revealed the presence of \ce{SnO2} and \ce{Al2O3} corrosion products mixed into \ce{TiO2}. The fracture surface has a transgranular nature with a brittle appearance in the primary $α$ phase. Long, straight and non-interacting dislocations were observed in a cleavage-fractured primary $α$ grain, with basal and pyramidal traces. This is consistent with a dislocation emission view of the the cracking mechanism.

Bipolar disorder (BD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) are both chronic psychiatric disorders. However, their overlap** symptoms and common comorbidity make it challenging for the clinicians to distinguish the two conditions on the basis of a clinical interview. In this work, we first present a new multi-modal dataset containing interviews involving individuals with BD or BPD being interviewed about a non-clinical topic . We investigate the automatic detection of the two conditions, and demonstrate a good linear classifier that can be learnt using a down-selected set of features from the different aspects of the interviews and a novel approach of summarising these features. Finally, we find that different sets of features characterise BD and BPD, thus providing insights into the difference between the automatic screening of the two conditions.

Current management of bipolar disorder relies on self-reported questionnaires and interviews with clinicians. The development of objective measures of deteriorating mood may also allow for early interventions to take place to avoid transitions into depressive states. The objective of this study was to use acceleration data recorded from smartphones to predict levels of depression in a population of participants diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Data were collected from 52 participants, with a mean of 37 weeks of acceleration data with a corresponding depression score recorded per participant. Time varying hidden Markov models were used to extract weekly features of activity, sleep and circadian rhythms. Personalised regression achieved mean absolute errors of 1.00(0.57) from a possible scale of 0 to 27 and was able to classify depression with an accuracy of 0.84(0.16). The results demonstrate features derived from smartphone accelerometers are able to provide objective markers of depression. Low barriers for uptake exist due to the widespread use of smartphones, with personalised models able to account for differences in the behaviour of individuals and provide accurate predictions of depression.

The availability of mobile technologies has enabled the efficient collection prospective longitudinal, ecologically valid self-reported mood data from psychiatric patients. These data streams have potential for improving the efficiency and accuracy of psychiatric diagnosis as well predicting future mood states enabling earlier intervention. However, missing responses are common in such datasets and there is little consensus as to how this should be dealt with in practice. A signature-based method was used to capture different elements of self-reported mood alongside missing data to both classify diagnostic group and predict future mood in patients with bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder and healthy controls. The missing-response-incorporated signature-based method achieves roughly 66\% correct diagnosis, with f1 scores for three different clinic groups 59\% (bipolar disorder), 75\% (healthy control) and 61\% (borderline personality disorder) respectively. This was significantly more efficient than the naive model which excluded missing data. Accuracies of predicting subsequent mood states and scores were also improved by inclusion of missing responses. The signature method provided an effective approach to the analysis of prospectively collected mood data where missing data was common and should be considered as an approach in other similar datasets.

Hot salt stress corrosion cracking in Ti 6246 alloy has been investigated to elucidate the chemical mechanisms that occur. Cracking was found to initiate beneath salt particles in the presence of oxidation. The observed transgranular fracture was suspected to be due to hydrogen charging; XRD and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy detected the presence of hydrides that were precipitated on cooling. SEM-EDS showed oxygen enrichment near salt particles, alongside chlorine and sodium. Aluminium and zirconium were also involved in the oxidation reactions. The role of intermediate corrosion products such as Na2TiO3, Al2O3, ZrO2, TiCl2 and TiH are discussed.

The complex nature of these data streams in combination with challenge of deriving meaning from missing data mean pose a significant analytic challenge. The signature method is derived from stochastic analysis and has the ability to capture important properties of complex ordered time series data. To explore whether the onset of episodes of mania and depression can be identified using self-reported mood data.

The classification procedure of streaming data usually requires various ad hoc methods or particular heuristic models. We explore a novel non-parametric and systematic approach to analysis of heterogeneous sequential data. We demonstrate an application of this method to classification of the delays in responding to the prompts, from subjects with bipolar disorder collected during a clinical trial, using both synthetic and real examples. We show how this method can provide a natural and systematic way to extract characteristic features from sequential data.
