Solitons, arising from nonlinear wave-matter interactions, stand out for their intrinsic stability during wave propagation and exceptional spectral characteristics. Their applications span diverse physical systems, including telecommunications, atomic clocks, and precise measurements. In recent years, significant strides have been made in develo** cavity-optomechanics based approaches to generate optical frequency combs (FCs). In this study, we present an innovative approach, never explored before, that leverages elastomer membrane (EM)-cavity optomechanics to achieve the generation of soliton FCs, a highly sought-after phenomenon in the realm of nonlinear wave-matter interactions. Our method represents a significant breakthrough due to its streamlined simplicity, relying on a single continuous-wave (CW) laser pump and an externally applied acoustic wave exciting an EM-cavity, which gives rise to phonons, quantized vibrational energy states intrinsic to the elastomer's crystalline lattice structure. The mechanical resonator and electromagnetic cavity resonance are parametrically coupled within the microwave frequency range, collectively orchestrate the process of soliton FCs formation with remarkable efficiency. Numerical simulations and experimental observations demonstrate the emergence of multiple stable localized opto-mechanical wave packets, characterized by a narrow pulses time-domain response. Crucially, by setting the acoustic wave frequency to match the natural frequency of the EM resonator, the solitons' teeth are precisely spaced, and the EM's motion is significantly amplified, giving rise to a Kerr medium. The successful realization of optomechanical stable solitons represents a monumental advancement with transformative potential across various fields, including quantum computing and spectroscopy.

The present work is a proof of concept of the capabilities of paralellization in the calculation of metamaterials in a non-linear regime. In this work we subdivided the bulk material into subregions where the mechanical properties are homogenized energetically. We demonstrate that the calculation can be subdivided to save RAM memory and fit the local non-linear behaviour of the metamaterial. This methodology has the potentiality to be implemented in the parallelization of those calculations, where the right estimation of the energy of the local processes at every step is important.

In the emerging field of mechanical metamaterials, using periodic lattice structures as a primary ingredient is relatively frequent. However, the choice of aperiodic lattices in these structures presents unique advantages regarding failure, e.g., buckling or fracture, because avoiding repeated patterns prevents global failures, with local failures occurring in turn that can beneficially delay structural collapse. Therefore, it is expedient to develop models for computing efficiently the effective mechanical properties in lattices from different general features while addressing the challenge of presenting topologies (or graphs) of different sizes. In this paper, we develop a deep learning model to predict energetically-equivalent mechanical properties of linear elastic lattices effectively. Considering the lattice as a graph and defining material and geometrical features on such, we show that Graph Neural Networks provide more accurate predictions than a dense, fully connected strategy, thanks to the geometrically induced bias through graph representation, closer to the underlying equilibrium laws from mechanics solved in the direct problem. Leveraging the efficient forward-evaluation of a vast number of lattices using this surrogate enables the inverse problem, i.e., to obtain a structure having prescribed specific behavior, which is ultimately suitable for multiscale structural optimization problems.

Topology optimization (TO) has experienced a dramatic development over the last decades aided by the arising of metamaterials and additive manufacturing (AM) techniques, and it is intended to achieve the current and future challenges. In this paper we propose an extension for linear orthotropic materials of a three-dimensional TO algorithm which directly operates on the six elastic properties -- three longitudinal and shear moduli, having fixed three Poisson ratios -- of the finite element (FE) discretization of certain analysis domain. By performing a gradient-descent-alike optimization on these properties, the standard deviation of a strain-energy measurement is minimized, thus coming up with optimized, strain-homogenized structures with variable longitudinal and shear stiffness in their different material directions. To this end, an orthotropic formulation with two approaches -- direct or strain-based and complementary or stress-based -- has been developed for this optimization problem, being the stress-based more efficient as previous works on this topic have shown.
The key advantages that we propose are: (1) the use of orthotropic ahead of isotropic materials, which enables a more versatile optimization process since the design space is increased by six times, and (2) no constraint needs to be imposed (such as maximum volume) in contrast to other methods widely used in this field such as Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP), all of this by setting one unique hyper-parameter. Results of four designed load cases show that this orthotropic-TO algorithm outperforms the isotropic case, both for the similar algorithm from which this is an extension and for a SIMP run in a FE commercial software, presenting a comparable computational cost. We remark that it works particularly effectively on pure shear or shear-governed problems such as torsion loading.

Applications of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) combined with Machine Learning (ML) techniques enhance real-time performance tracking and increase structural integrity awareness of civil, aerospace and automotive infrastructures. This SHM-ML synergy has gained popularity in the last years thanks to the anticipation of maintenance provided by arising ML algorithms and their ability of handling large quantities of data and considering their influence in the problem.
In this paper we develop a novel ML nearest-neighbors-alike algorithm based on the principle of maximum entropy to predict fatigue damage (Palmgren-Miner index) in composite materials by processing the signals of Lamb Waves -- a non-destructive SHM technique -- with other meaningful features such as layup parameters and stiffness matrices calculated from the Classical Laminate Theory (CLT). The full data analysis cycle is applied to a dataset of delamination experiments in composites. The predictions achieve a good level of accuracy, similar to other ML algorithms, e.g. Neural Networks or Gradient-Boosted Trees, and computation times are of the same order of magnitude.
The key advantages of our proposal are: (1) The automatic determination of all the parameters involved in the prediction, so no hyperparameters have to be set beforehand, which saves time devoted to hypertuning the model and also represents an advantage for autonomous, self-supervised SHM. (2) No training is required, which, in an \textit{online learning} context where streams of data are fed continuously to the model, avoids repeated training -- essential for reliable real-time, continuous monitoring.
