The ground states of the nuclei $^{40}$Mg and $^{39}$Na are investigated using the hyperspherical formalism. Since they are located at the edge of the "big island of inversion", we concentrate on whether we are likely to find two-neutron Borromean halos in these nuclei. A three-body model with effective $n$-$n$ and $^{38}$Mg$+n$ interactions is built for $^{40}$Mg based on the available data. We also give predictions for the low-lying spectrum of $^{38}$Na$=^{37}$Na$+n$ and two-neutron separation energy of the $^{39}$Na nucleus. Depending on parameter choice, we report an increase in the matter radii in the range $0.1$-$0.5$ fm relative to those of the core nuclei. The results suggest a two-neutron halo structure in $^{40}$Mg for a subset of parameters, reinforcing the prediction of a Borromean halo nucleus. The calculations indicate that a two-neutron halo is even more likely for $^{39}$Na. As expected, the halo is linked to the disappearance of the shell gap in these nuclei due to the inversion of the $2p_{3/2}$ and $1f_{7/2}$ orbitals. We study the total cross section for scattering of these nuclei from a carbon target using a Glauber model and show that these provide a clear signal to assess the halo structure.

Since magic nuclei are significantly lighter, or more bound, compared to their neighbors, the presence of nucleonic shell structure makes an imprint on nuclear masses. In this work, using a carefully designed binding-energy indicator, we catalog the appearance of spherical and deformed shell and subshell closures throughout the nuclear landscape. After presenting experimental evidence for shell and subshell closures as seen through the lens of nuclear masses, we study the ability of global nuclear mass models to predict local binding-energy variations related to shell effects.

Symmetry conserving density functional theory (DFT) based no-core-configuration-interaction framework (DFT-NCCI) is an excellent tool for precision calculation of diverse (pseudo-)observables related to isospin symmetry breaking from elusive isospin impurities trough isospin corrections to superallowed beta decays to mirror- and triplet-displacement energies and mirror energy differences (MED) along rotational bands. In our recent work [Phys. Rev. C {\bf 106}, 024327 (2022)] we performed axial DFT-NCCI calculations and failed to reproduce a sign of MED in positive-parity bands of 45Sc/45Cr T=3/2 mirror pair what casts a shadow on credibility of the model. In this work we aim to perform a thorough analysis of this case with the focus on sensitivity of our predictions with respect to: (i) low-energy constants (LECs) of our effective contact charge symmetry breaking (CSB) force and (ii) nuclear shape. We demonstrate, among the other, that inclusion of triaxial positive-parity ground-state - which is actually the global positive-parity minimum in our unconstrained mean-field calculation - in the DFT-NCCI calculations instead of the axial one used before leads to MED which are consistent with experimental data concerning both their sign as well as magnitude without any need for fine-tuning of the model's LECs.

Background: Small asymmetry between neutrons and protons, caused by the differences in masses and charges of the up and down constituent quarks leads to the isospin symmetry breaking. The isospin non-conservation affects broad range of observables from superallowed Fermi weak interaction to isospin-forbidden electromagnetic rates. Its most profound and cleanest manifestation are systematic shifts in masses and excitation energies of mirror atomic nuclei.
Purpose: Recently, we constructed the charge-dependent DFT that includes class II and III local interactions and demonstrated that the model allows for very accurate reproduction of Mirror and Triplet Displacement energies in a very broad range of masses. The aim of this work is to further test the charge-dependent functional by studying Mirror Energy Differences (MEDs) in function of angular momentum $I$.
Methods: To compute MEDs we use DFT-rooted no core configuration interaction model. This post mean-field method restores rotational symmetry and takes into account configuration mixing within a space that includes relevant (multi)particle-(multi)hole Slater determinants.
Results: We applied the model to $f_{7/2}$-shell mirror pairs of $A=43$, $45$, $47$, and $49$ focusing on MEDs in low-spin part (below band crossing) what allowed us to limit the model space to seniority one and three (one broken pair) configurations.
Conclusions: We demonstrate that, for spins $I\leq 15/2$ being subject of the present study, our model reproduces well experimental MEDs which vary strongly in function of $I$ and $A$. The quality of model's predictions is comparable to the nuclear shell-model results by Bentley et al. Phys. Rev. C 92, 024310 (2015).

We demonstrate that, unexpectedly, the strong-force-rooted isovector force gives rise to a large systematic increase of $α_{\rm ISB}$ and $δ_{\rm ISB}^{\rm V}$ as compared to the results obtained within MR-DFT that uses Coulomb interaction as the only source of ISB. This, in turn, increases a central value of the $V_{\rm ud}$ element of the CKM matrix extracted from the $T=1/2$ mirrors bringing it closer to the value obtained form the purely vector superallowed $0^+ \to 0^+$ transitions. In order to compute the value of $V_{\rm ud}$, we performed precision calculation of the Fermi matrix elements in $A=19, 21, 35$, and 37 mirror nuclei using DFT-rooted configuration-interaction model that includes all relevant axially-deformed particle-hole configurations built upon Nilsson orbitals originating from the spherical $sd$ shell. We extend the nuclear Density Functional Theory (DFT) by including proton-neutron mixing and contact isospin-symmetry-breaking (ISB) terms up to next-to-leading order (NLO). Within this formalism, we perform systematic study of the nuclear mirror and triple displacement energies, or equivalently of the Isobaric Multiplet Mass Equation (IMME) coefficients. By comparing results with those obtained within the existing Green Function Monte Carlo (GFMC) calculations, we address the fundamental question of the physical origin of the ISB effects. This we achieve by analyzing separate contributions to IMME coefficients coming from the electromagnetic and nuclear ISB terms. We show that the ISB DFT and GFMC results agree reasonably well, and that they describe experimental data with a comparable quality. Since the separate electromagnetic and nuclear ISB contributions also agree, we conclude that the beyond-mean-field electromagnetic effects may not play a dominant role in describing the ISB effects in finite nuclei.

The atomic nucleus is a unique laboratory to study fundamental aspects of the electroweak interaction. This includes a question concerning in medium renormalization of the axial-vector current, which still lacks satisfactory explanation. Study of spin-isospin or Gamow-Teller (GT) response may provide valuable information on both the quenching of the axial-vector coupling constant as well as on nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics. We have performed a seminal calculation of the GT response by using the no-core-configuration-interaction approach rooted on multi-reference density functional theory (DFT-NCCI). The model treats properly isospin and rotational symmetries and can be applied to calculate both the nuclear spectra and transition rates in atomic nuclei, irrespectively of their mass and particle-number parity. The method is applied to compute the GT strength distribution in selected $N\approx Z$ nuclei including the $p$-shell $^8$Li and $^8$Be nuclei and the $sd$-shell well-deformed nucleus $^{24}$Mg. In order to demonstrate a flexibility of the approach we present also a calculation of the superallowed GT beta decay in doubly-magic spherical $^{100}$Sn and the low-spin spectrum in $^{100}$In. It is demonstrated that the DFT-NCCI model is capable to capture the GT response satisfactorily well by using relatively small configuration space exhausting simultaneously the GT sum rule. The model, due to its flexibility and broad range of applicability, may either serve as a complement or even as an alternative to other theoretical approaches including the conventional nuclear shell model.

Effects of the isospin-symmetry breaking (ISB) beyond mean-field Coulomb terms are systematically studied in nuclear masses near the $N=Z$ line. The Coulomb exchange contributions are calculated exactly. We use extended Skyrme energy density functionals (EDFs) with proton-neutron-mixed densities, to which we add new terms breaking the isospin symmetry. Two parameters associated with the new terms are determined by fitting mirror and triplet displacement energies (MDEs and TDEs) of isospin multiplets. The new EDFs reproduce MDEs for the $T=\frac12$ doublets and $T=1$ triplets, and TDEs for the $T=1$ triplets. Relative strengths of the obtained isospin-symmetry-breaking terms {\em are not} consistent with the differences in the $NN$ scattering lengths, $a_{nn}$, $a_{pp}$, and $a_{np}$. Based on low-energy experimental data, it seems thus impossible to delineate the strong-force ISB effects from beyond-mean-field Coulomb-energy corrections.

[Background] Single-reference density functional theory is very successful in reproducing bulk nuclear properties like binding energies, radii, or quadrupole moments throughout the entire periodic table. Its extension to the multi-reference level allows for restoring symmetries and, in turn, for calculating transition rates.
[Purpose] We propose a new no-core-configuration-interaction (NCCI) model treating properly isospin and rotational symmetries. The model is applicable to any nucleus irrespective of its mass and neutron- and proton-number parity. It properly includes polarization effects caused by an interplay between the long- and short-range forces acting in the atomic nucleus.
[Methods] The method is based on solving the Hill-Wheeler-Griffin equation within a model space built of linearly-dependent states having good angular momentum and properly treated isobaric spin. The states are generated by means of the isospin and angular-momentum projection applied to a set of low-lying (multi)particle-(multi)hole deformed Slater determinants calculated using the self-consistent Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approach.
[Results] The theory is applied to calculate energy spectra in N~Z nuclei that are relevant from the point of view of a study of superallowed Fermi beta-decays. In particular, a new set of the isospin-symmetry-breaking corrections to these decays is given.
[Conclusions] It is demonstrated that the NCCI model is capable to capture main features of low-lying energy spectra in light and medium-mass nuclei using relatively small model space and without any local readjustment of its low-energy coupling constants. Its flexibility and a range of applicability makes it an interesting alternative to the conventional nuclear shell model.

The model assumes that the Skyrme EDF is invariant under the rotation in isospin space and the Coulomb force is the only source of the isospin symmetry breaking. To control the isospin of the system, we employ the isocranking method, which is analogous to the standard cranking approach used for describing high-spin states. Here, we present results of the isocranking calculations performed for the isobaric analog states in $A = 40$ and $A = 54$ nuclei.

Methods: Regularized matrix elements of two-body interactions are obtained by integrating the auxiliary quantities and then solving simple linear equations.
Results: We implement the new regularization method within the self-consistent Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approach and we perform a proof-of-principle angular-momentum projection (AMP) of states in odd-odd nucleus 26Al. We show that for EDFs generated by true interactions, our regularization method gives results identical to those obtained within the standard AMP procedure. We also show that for EDFs that do not correspond to true interactions, it gives stable and converging results that are different than unstable and non-converging standard AMP values.
Conclusions: The new regularization method proposed in this work may provide us with a relatively inexpensive and efficient tool to generalize SR EDFs to MR applications, thus allowing for symmetry restoration and configuration mixing performed for typical nuclear EDFs, which most often do not correspond to true interactions.

We discuss theoretical uncertainties of the formalism related to the basis truncation, parametrization of the underlying energy density functional, and ambiguities related to determination of Slater determinants in odd-odd nuclei. A generalization of the double-projected DFT model towards a no core shell-model-like configuration-mixing approach is formulated and implemented. We also discuss new opportunities in charge-symmetry- and charge-independence-breaking studies offered by the newly developed DFT formalism involving proton-neutron mixing in the particle-hole channel.

We present results of calculations based on the Skyrme energy density functional including the arbitrary mixing between protons and neutrons. In this framework, single-particle states are superpositions of proton and neutron components and the energy density functional is fully invariant with respect to three-dimensional rotations in the isospin space. The isospin of the system is controlled by means of the isocranking method, which carries over the standard cranking approach to the isospin space. We show numerical results of the isocranking calculations performed for isobaric analogue states in the A=14 and $A=40-56$ nuclei. We also present such results obtained for high-isospin states in $^{48}$Cr, with constraints on the isospin implemented by using the augmented Lagrange method.

Background: The superallowed beta-decay rates provide stringent constraints on physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. To extract crucial information about the electroweak force, small isospin-breaking corrections to the Fermi matrix element of superallowed transitions must be applied. Purpose: We perform systematic calculations of isospin-breaking corrections to superallowed beta-decays and estimate theoretical uncertainties related to the basis truncation, time-odd polarization effects related to the intrinsic symmetry of the underlying Slater determinants, and to the functional parametrization. Methods: We use the self-consistent isospin- and angular-momentum-projected nuclear density functional theory employing two density functionals derived from the density independent Skyrme interaction. Pairing correlations are ignored. Our framework can simultaneously describe various effects that impact matrix elements of the Fermi decay: symmetry breaking, configuration mixing, and long-range Coulomb polarization. Results: The isospin-breaking corrections to the I=0+,T=1 --> I=0+,T=1 pure Fermi transitions are computed for nuclei from A=10 to A=98 and, for the first time, to the Fermi branch of the I,T=1/2 --> I,T=1/2 transitions in mirror nuclei from A=11 to A=49. We carefully analyze various model assumptions impacting theoretical uncertainties of our calculations and provide theoretical error bars on our predictions. Conclusions: The overall agreement with empirical isospin-breaking corrections is very satisfactory. Using computed isospin-breaking corrections we show that the unitarity of the CKM matrix is satisfied with a precision better than 0.1%.

We describe the new version (v2.49t) of the code HFODD which solves the nuclear Skyrme Hartree-Fock (HF) or Skyrme Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov (HFB) problem by using the Cartesian deformed harmonic-oscillator basis. In the new version, we have implemented the following physics features: (i) the isospin mixing and projection, (ii) the finite temperature formalism for the HFB and HF+BCS methods, (iii) the Lipkin translational energy correction method, (iv) the calculation of the shell correction. A number of specific numerical methods have also been implemented in order to deal with large-scale multi-constraint calculations and hardware limitations: (i) the two-basis method for the HFB method, (ii) the Augmented Lagrangian Method (ALM) for multi-constraint calculations, (iii) the linear constraint method based on the approximation of the RPA matrix for multi-constraint calculations, (iv) an interface with the axial and parity-conserving Skyrme-HFB code HFBTHO, (v) the mixing of the HF or HFB matrix elements instead of the HF fields. Special care has been paid to using the code on massively parallel leadership class computers. For this purpose, the following features are now available with this version: (i) the Message Passing Interface (MPI) framework, (ii) scalable input data routines, (iii) multi-threading via OpenMP pragmas, (iv) parallel diagonalization of the HFB matrix in the simplex breaking case using the ScaLAPACK library. Finally, several little significant errors of the previous published version were corrected.

This development allows for consistent treatment of isospin mixing in both ground and exited nuclear states. In this study, we apply this method to evaluate the isospin impurities in ground states of even-even and odd-odd N~Z nuclei. Calculations for infinite nuclear matter with realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions suggest that the isoscalar effective mass of a nucleon at the saturation density, m*/m, equals 0.8 +/- 0.1. This result is at variance with empirical data on the level density in finite nuclei, which are consistent with m*/m ~ 1. Ma and Wambach suggested that these two contradicting results may be reconciled within a single theoretical framework by assuming a radial-dependent effective mass, peaked at the nuclear surface. The aim of this exploratory work is to investigate this idea within the density functional theory by using a Skyrme-type local functional enriched with new terms, $τ(\mathbf{\nabla}ρ)^2$ and $τ\frac{dρ}{dr}$, where $τ$ and $ρ$ denote the kinetic and particle densities, respectively. We show that each of these terms can give rise to a surface peak in the effective mass, but of a limited height. We investigate the influence of the radial profile of the effective mass on the spin-orbit splittings and centroids. In particular, we demonstrate that the $τ\frac{dρ}{dr}$ term quenches the 1f5/2-1f7/2 splitting in 40Ca, which is strongly overestimated within conventional Skyrme parametrizations.

We propose a projection scheme rooted in a mean field theory, that allows the consistent treatment of isospin breaking in both ground and exited nuclear states. We demonstrate that this scheme is essentially free from spurious divergences plaguing particle-number and angular-momentum restoration approaches. Applications of the new technique include excited high-spin states in medium-mass N=Z nuclei, such as superdeformed bands and many-particle-many-hole terminating states.

This contradicting results might be reconciled by enriching the radial dependence of IEM. In this work four new terms are introduced into the Skyrme-force inspired local energy-density functional: $τ(\nablaρ)^2$, $τ\frac{dρ}{dr}$, $τ^2$ and $τΔρ$. The aim is to investigate how they influence the radial dependence of IEM and, in turn, the single-particle spectra.

The aim of this work is to address further consequences of these strong attractive tensor and weak SO fields on binding energies, nuclear deformability, and high-spin states. In particular, we show that contribution to the nuclear binding energy due to the tensor field shows generic magic structure with tensorial magic numbers at N(Z)=14, 32, 56, or 90 corresponding to the maximum spin-asymmetries in 1d5/2, 1f7/2-2p3/2, 1g9/2-2d5/2 and 1h11/2-2f7/2 single-particle configurations and that these numbers are smeared out by pairing correlations and deformation effects. We present the self-consistent, non-perturbative analysis of isospin mixing using the nuclear density functional approach and the rediagonalization of the Coulomb interaction in the good-isospin basis. The largest isospin-breaking effects are predicted for N = Z nuclei and they quickly fall with the neutron excess. The unphysical isospin violation on the mean-field level, caused by the neutron excess, is eliminated by the proposed method. We find a significant dependence of the magnitude of isospin breaking on the parametrization of the nuclear interaction term. A rough correlation has been found between the isospin mixing parameter and the difference of proton and neutron rms radii. The theoretical framework described in this study is well suited to describe a variety of phenomena associated with isospin violation in nuclei, in particular the isospin symmetry-breaking corrections to superallowed Fermi beta decays.

We address consequences of strong tensor and weak spin-orbit terms in the local energy density functional, resulting from fits to the $f_{5/2} - f_{7/2}$ splittings in $^{40}$Ca, $^{48}$Ca, and $^{56}$Ni. In this study, we focus on nuclear binding energies. In particular, we show that the tensor contribution to the binding energies exhibits interesting topological features closely resembling that of the shell-correction. We demonstrate that in the extreme single-particle scenario at spherical shape, the tensor contribution shows tensorial magic numbers equal to $N(Z)$=14, 32, 56, and 90, and that this structure is smeared out due to configuration mixing caused by pairing correlations and migration of proton/neutron sub-shells with neutron/proton shell filling. Based on a specific Skyrme-type functional SLy4$_T$, we show that the proton tensorial magic numbers shift with increasing neutron excess to $Z$=14, 28, and 50.

The problem of the effective mass scaling in the single particle spectra calculated within the Skyrme energy density functional (EDF) method is studied. It is demonstrated that for specific pairs of orbitals the commonly anticipated isoscalar effective mass (m*) scaling of the single-particle level splittings is almost canceled by an implicit m*-scaling due to other parameters in the Skyrme EDF. This holds in particular for an indirect m*-scaling of the two-body spin-orbit strength making the theory essentially unpredictable with respect to single particle energies. It is argued that this unphysical property of the Skyrme EDF is a mere consequence of the strategies and datasets used to fit these functionals. The inclusion of certain single-particle spin-orbit splittings to fit the two-body spin-orbit and the tensor interaction strengths reinstates the conventional m*-scaling and improves the performance of the Skyrme EDF.

A new strategy of fitting the coupling constants of the nuclear energy density functional is proposed, which shifts attention from ground-state bulk to single-particle properties. The latter are analyzed in terms of the bare single-particle energies and mass, shape, and spin core-polarization effects. Fit of the isoscalar spin-orbit and both isoscalar and isovector tensor coupling constants directly to the f5/2-f7/2 spin-orbit splittings in 40Ca, 56Ni, and 48Ca is proposed as a practical realization of this new programme. It is shown that this fit requires drastic changes in the isoscalar spin-orbit strength and the tensor coupling constants as compared to the commonly accepted values but it considerably and systematically improves basic single-particle properties including spin-orbit splittings and magic-gap energies. Impact of these changes on nuclear binding energies is also discussed.

We present the first systematic calculations based on the angular-momentum projection of cranked Slater determinants. We propose the Iy --> I scheme, by which one projects the angular momentum I from the 1D cranked state constrained to the average spin projection of <I_y>=I. Calculations performed for the rotational band in 46Ti show that the AMP Iy --> I scheme offers a natural mechanism for correcting the cranking moment of inertia at low-spins and shifting the terminating state up by ~2 MeV, in accordance with data. We also apply this scheme to high-spin states near the band termination in A~44 nuclei, and compare results thereof with experimental data, shell-model calculations, and results of the approximate analytical symmetry-restoration method proposed previously.

Abstract:
The exact solution of proton-neutron isoscalar-isovector (T=0,1) pairing Hamiltonian with non-degenerate single-particle orbits and equal pairing strengths (g_{T=1}= g_{T=0}) is presented for the first time. The exact solution of proton-neutron isoscalar-isovector (T=0,1) pairing Hamiltonian with non-degenerate single-particle orbits and equal pairing strengths (g_{T=1}= g_{T=0}) is presented for the first time. The Hamiltonian is a particular case of a family of integrable SO(8) Richardson-Gaudin (RG) models. The exact solution of the T=0,1 pairing Hamiltonian is reduced to a problem of 4 sets of coupled non linear equations that determine the spectral parameters of the complete set of eigenstates. The microscopic structure of individual eigenstates is analyzed in terms of evolution of the spectral parameters in the complex plane for system of A=80 nucleons. The spectroscopic trends of the exact solutions are discussed in terms of generalized rotations in isospace.

Following the result of Zdunczuk et al., Phys. Rev. C71 (2005) 024305 the calculations are performed using Skyrme energy density functional with empirical Landau parameters and slightly reduced spin-orbit strength. The aim is to identify and phenomenologically restore rotational symmetry broken by the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock solutions. In particular, it is shown that correlation energy due to symmetry restoration is absolutely crucial in order to reproduce energy splitting E(I_max) - E(I_max -1) in [f 7/2 ^ n] configurations but is relatively less important for [d 3/2 ^ (-1) f 7/2 ^ (n+1)] configurations.

We employ two theoretical approaches: (i) the density functional theory based on the cranked self-consistent Skyrme-Hartree-Fock method, and (ii) the nuclear shell model in the full sdfp configuration space allowing for 1p-1h cross-shell excitations. We emphasize the importance of restoration of broken angular momentum symmetry inherently obscuring the mean-field treatment of high-spin states. Overall good agreement with experimental data is obtained.

Low-energy nuclear structure is not sensitive enough to resolve fine details of nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction. Insensitivity of infrared physics to the details of short-range strong interaction allows for consistent, free of ultraviolet divergences, formulation of local theory at the level of local energy density functional (LEDF) including, on the same footing, both particle-hole as well as particle-particle channels. Major difficulty is related to parameterization of the nuclear LEDF and its density dependence. It is argued that structural simplicity of terminating or isomeric states offers invaluable source of informations that can be used for fine-tuning of the NN interaction in general and the nuclear LEDF parameters in particular. Practical applications of terminating states at the level of LEDF and nuclear shell-model are discussed.

The spin-orbit (SO) interaction, emerging naturally from the Relativistic Mean Field (RMF) theory is examined critically in the light of the recently measured excitation energy differences between the terminating states built on two different configurations for nuclei belonging to the lower pf shell. The calculations are carried out using the cranked RMF framework. To further probe the iso-vector dependence of the spin-orbit potential, the energy spacing between the g_{7/2} and h_{11/2} states in the Sb-chain is compared to experiment. It is found that the calculation at the quantitative level deviates strongly from the experiment. In particular the balance of the iso-scalar and iso-vector strengths of the effective one body SO potential indicates that additional terms like tensor couplings may be needed to account for the experimental data.
