Modelling of impurity heating during reconnections in a Reverse Field Pinch device as due to parallel electric field acceleration and chaos-induced thermalization
Abstract: The ion temperature during magnetic reconnections measured along the direction of the magnetic field at the MST Reverse Field Pinch has not yet received a satisfactory theoretical explanation. In this work we argue that it is consistent with a picture of ion energization by the parallel electric fields generated by the plasma during reconnection, and thermalization due to the chaotic ion dynamics.… ▽ More

Revisiting the Toda-Brumer-Duff criterion for order-chaos transition in dynamical systems
Abstract: TThe Toda-Brumer-Duff (TBD) is an analytical criterion for estimating the local exponential rate of divergence between nearby trajectories in dynamical systems, and it is employed as a test for assessing the existence of chaos therein. It is fairly simple, intuitive, and works well in several situations, hence gained quite a wide popularity, yet it is known to be not rigorous since predicts ``fals… ▽ More

Thresholdless stochastic particle heating by a single wave
Abstract: Stochastic heating is a well-known mechanism through which magnetized particles may be energized by low-frequency electromagnetic waves. In its simplest version, under spatially homogeneous conditions, it is known to be operative only above a threshold in the normalized wave amplitude, which may be a demanding requisite in actual scenarios, severely restricting its range of applicability. Collisionless sound of bosonic superfluids in lower dimensions
Abstract: The superfluidity of low-temperature bosons is well established in the collisional regime. In the collisionless regime, however, the presence of superfluidity is not yet fully clarified, in particular in lower spatial dimensions. Superstatistics and temperature fluctuations
Abstract: Superstatistics [C. Beck and E.G.D. Cohen, Physica A 322, 267 (2003)] is a formalism aimed at describing statistical properties of a generic extensive quantity E in complex out-of-equilibrium systems in terms of a superposition of equilibrium canonical distributions weighted by a function P(beta) of the intensive thermodynamic quantity beta conjugate to E. Skewed distributions as limits of a formal evolutionary process
Abstract: Time series of observables measured from complex systems do often exhibit non-normal statistics, their statistical distributions (PDF's) are not gaussian and often skewed, with roughly exponential tails. Diffusive Limits of the Master Equation in Inhomogeneous Media
Abstract: Diffusion is the macroscopic manifestation of disordered molecular motion. Perturbative transport experiments: to what extent do they really probe microscopic transport?

Comments: After the publication of the paper we became aware of a fundamental error in the normalization of our equations. While at some places, plasma pressure was normalized to the magnetic energy density, at other places, plasma pressure and the plasma pressure source were normalized to the {\it equilibrium} plasma pressure. This involves that a $β$ factor was missing in some of the equations. By an unfortunate coincidence the different sources of error largely masked each other in the final results, thereby allowing the model to provide seemingly accurate conclusions. The correction of this error implies that the alleged MHD effects are smaller by a factor $β$, and cannot account for the phenomenology observed. This invalidates our conclusions

On the classical treatment of the Stark effect in hydrogen atoms
Abstract: A classical model of the hydrogen atom in a static electric field is studied, basing upon the work [ Hooker A. et al, {\it Phys. Rev. A}, 55 (1997) 4609 ]. In that work the electrons are supposed to move along Kepler orbits around the nucleus, while interacting with the external field. That classical model reproduces very well the true energy shift of the linear Stark effect. The agreement with… ▽ More

A CTMC study of collisions between protons and $H_2^+$ molecular ions
Abstract: We study numerically collisions between protons and $H_2^+$ molecular ions at intermediate impact energies by using the Classical Trajectory Monte Carlo method (CTMC). Total and differential cross sections are computed. The results are compared with: a) the standard one electron--two nucleon scattering, and b) the quantum mechanical treatment of the $ H^{+} - H^{+}_{2} $ scattering.

On the Convergence of the WKB Series for the Angular Momentum Operator
Abstract: In this paper we prove a recent conjecture [Robnik M and Salasnich L 1997 J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 30 1719] about the convergence of the WKB series for the angular momentum operator. We demonstrate that the WKB algorithm for the angular momentum gives the exact quantization formula if all orders are summed.

SWKB for the Angular Momentum
Abstract: In this paper we solve the eigenvalue problem of the angular momentum operator by using the supersymmetric semiclassical quantum mechanics (SWKB), and show that it gives the correct quantization already at the leading order.

Chaotic features in classical scattering processes between ions and atoms
Abstract: A numerical study has been done of collisions between protons and hydrogen atoms, treated as classical particles, at low impact velocities. The presence of chaos has been looked for by investigating the processes with standard techniques of the chaotic--scattering theory. The evidence of a sharp transition from nearly regular scattering to fully developed chaos has been found at the lower veloci… ▽ More

Ion Collisions in Very Strong Electric Fields
Abstract: A Classical Trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) simulation has been made of processes of charge exchange and ionization between an hydrogen atom and fully stripped ions embedded in very strong static electric fields ($O(10^{10}$ V/m$)$), which are thought to exist in cosmic and laser--produced plasmas. Calculations show that the presence of the field affects absolute values of the cross sections, enha… ▽ More
