Lattice formation of swirling textures is ubiquitous in solid-state materials, such as a magnetic skyrmion lattice in chiral magnets. In the magnetic skyrmion lattices, their moving states and dynamics under external perturbations are still unrevealed, although a detailed understanding of the dynamics is crucial to realizing spintronic applications, such as magnetic domain-wall racetrack memory. Here, we report in detail on the transient state of a moving magnetic skyrmion lattice in bulk single-crystalline MnSi under alternating current (AC) using small-angle neutron scattering. A rotation and concomitant broadening of the spot width in the azimuthal direction of the magnetic skyrmion reflections originating from the plastic deformation of the magnetic skyrmion lattice were found only at low AC frequencies, whereas above the threshold AC frequency (ft ~ 0.12 Hz) the rotation was not observed, and the spot width becomes sharper. The observed complex response of the magnetic skyrmion reflections can be explained by the change in dislocation density in the magnetic skyrmion lattice. At frequencies higher than ft, the magnetic skyrmions oscillate removing the dislocations, indicating that the dislocation density is controlled by the AC frequency.

A magnetic phase diagram of the non-Heisenberg Tsai-type 1/1 Au-Ga-Tb approximant crystal (AC) has been established across a wide electron-per-atom (e/a) range via magnetization and powder neutron diffraction measurements. The diagram revealed exotic ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) orders that originate from the unique local spin icosahedron common to icosahedral quasicrystals (iQCs) and ACs; The noncoplanar whirling AFM order is stabilized as the ground state at the e/a of 1.72 or less whereas a noncoplanar whirling FM order was found at the larger e/a of 1.80, with magnetic moments tangential to the Tb icosahedron in both cases. Moreover, the FM/AFM phase selection rule was unveiled in terms of the nearest neighbour (J1) and next nearest neighbour (J2) interactions by numerical calculations on a non-Heisenberg single icosahedron. The present findings will pave the way for understanding the intriguing magnetic orders of not only non-Heisenberg FM/AFM ACs but also non-Heisenberg FM/AFM iQCs, the latter of which are yet to be discovered.

We report a new Au-Ga-Ce 1/1 approximant crystal (AC) which possesses a significantly wide single-phase region of 53 - 70 at% Au and 13.6 - 15.1 at% Ce. Single crystal X-ray structural analyses reveal the existence of two types of structural degrees of freedom, i.e., the Au/Ga mixing sites and the fractional Ce occupancy site: the former enables a large variation in the electron concentration and the latter allows a variation in the occupancy of a magnetic impurity atom at the center of the Tsai-type cluster. Following these findings, the influences of two types of structural modifications on the magnetism are thoroughly investigated by means of magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements on the Au-Ga-Ce 1/1 AC. The spin-glass (SG) state is found to be the ground state over the entire single-phase region, showing a robust nature of the SG state against both structural modifications. In addition, a gigantic specific heat (C/T) is commonly observed at low temperatures for all the compositions, which is consistently explained as a consequence of the spin-freezing phenomenon, not of a heavy Fermion behavior as reported elsewhere. Moreover, the origin of the SG state in the 1/1 Au-Ga-Ce AC is attributed to the existence of non-magnetic atom disorder in the Au/Ga mixing sites. Furthermore, a Kondo behavior is observed in the electrical resistivity at low temperatures, which is enhanced by increasing the Ce concentration, verifying that a Ce atom introduced at the cluster center behaves as a Kondo impurity for the first time.

We present nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), neutron diffraction, magnetization, and transport measurements on a single crystal and powder of CeVGe$_3$. This material exhibits heavy fermion behavior at low temperature, accompanied by antiferromagnetic (AFM) order below 5.8 K. We find that the magnetic structure is incommensurate with AFM helical structure, characterized by a magnetic modulated propagation vector of $(0, 0, 0.49)$ with in-plane moments rotating around the $c$-axis. The NMR Knight shift and spin-lattice relaxation rate reveal a coherence temperature $T^*\sim 15$ K, and the presence of significant antiferromagnetic fluctuations reminiscent of the archetypical heavy fermion compound CeRhIn$_5$. We further identify a metamagnetic transition above $H_m\sim 2.5$ T for magnetic fields perpendicular to $c$. We speculate that the magnetic structure in this field-induced phase consists of a superposition with both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic components, which is consistent with the NMR spectrum in this region of the phase diagram. Our results thus indicate that CeVGe$_3$ is a hexagonal structure analog to tetragonal CeRhIn$_5$.

Neutron and x-ray diffraction experiments were performed on the ternary intermetallic compound YbNiSn, formerly categorized as a ferromagnetic Kondo compound. At zero field, an increase in scattering intensity was observed on top of allowed and forbidden nuclear reflections below Tc, breaking the reflection condition of the crystal symmetry Pnma. This indicates that the magnetic structure of YbNiSn is antiferromagnetic-type, rather than the previously proposed simple collinear ferromagnetic structure. Temperature dependence of the scattering intensity of the 011 reflection confirmed the magnetic ordering at 5.77(2) K. No incommensurate satellite reflection was observed at 2.5 K. By applying external magnetic field of 1 T along the a axis, the magnetic intensity at the nuclear-forbidden 001 position was suppressed, while a slight enhancement at the nuclear-allowed 002 position was observed. This suggests a spin-flip transition under the external magnetic field along the a axis in YbNiSn. The proposed magnetic structures at zero field and 1 T correspond to the magnetic space groups of Pn'm'a and Pnm'a', respectively. The piezomagnetic effect and the switch between the two magnetic space groups by the external stress, which could be detected by the anomalous Hall effect, are proposed.

Furthermore, when combined with a previous neutron scattering study and the perimeter scaling entropy of a spin jam, the analysis reveals that with decreasing $p$, i.e., do** of the nonmagnetic Ga$^{3+}$ ions, the variation in the magnetic zero-point entropy can be well explained by the combined effects of the zero-point entropy of the spin jam state and that of weakly coupled orphan spins, shedding light on the coexistence of the two types of spin states in quantum magnetism.

Magnetic properties of the antiferromagnet Zn$_{0.15}$Cu$_{1.85}$V$_2$O$_7$ (ZnCVO) have been thoroughly investigated on powder and single-crystal samples. The crystal structure determination using powder x-ray and neutron diffraction confirms that ZnCVO with Zn = 0.15 is isostructural with $β$-Cu$_{2}$V$_2$O$_7$ ($β$-CVO) with small deviation in the lattice parameters. Macroscopic magnetic properties measurements also confirm the similarity between the two compounds. The Cu$^{2+}$ spins were found to align along the crystallographic $c$-axis, antiparallel to their nearest neighbors connected by the leading exchange interaction $J_1$. Spin dynamics reveals a typical symmetric spin-wave dispersion with strong interactions in the $bc$-plane and weak interplane coupling. The exchange interaction analysis indicates that the spin network of ZnCVO is topologically consistent with the previous DFT prediction but the values of leading exchange interactions are contradictory. Furthermore, rather than the predicted 2D honeycomb structure, the spin network in ZnCVO could be better described by the anisotropic 2D spin network composing of $J_1$, $J_5$, and $J_6$ interactions, four bonds per one spin site, coupled by weak interplane interactions.

Using small angle neutron scattering, we have investigated higher-order peaks in the skyrmion-lattice phase of Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$, in which two different skyrmion lattices, SkX1 and SkX2, are known to form. For each skyrmion-lattice phase, we observed two sets of symmetrically inequivalent peaks at the higher-order-reflection positions with the indices $(110)$ and $(200)$. Under the condition where the SkX1 and SkX2 coexist, we confirmed the absence of the scattering at $\mathbf{Q}$ positions combining reflections from the two phases, indicating a significantly weak double-scattering component. Detailed analysis of the peak profile, as well as the temperature and magnetic-field dependence of the peak intensity, also supports the intrinsic higher-order modulation rather than the parasitic double scattering. The two higher-order modulations show contrasting magnetic-field dependence; the former $(110)$ increases as the field is increased, whereas the latter $(200)$ decreases. This indicates that, in Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$, skyrmions are weakly distorted, and the distortion is field-dependent in a way that the dominant higher-order modulation switches from $(110)$ to $(200)$ under field. Monte Carlo simulations under swee** external magnetic field qualitatively reproduce the observed magnetic-field dependence, and suggests that the higher-order modulations correspond to the superlattices of weak swirlings appearing in the middle of the original triangular-latticed skyrmions.

The temperature dependences of the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetization curve indicate dominant ferromagnetic interactions, while the whirling antiferromagnetic order was found from the neutron diffraction experiments. In the antiferromagnetic phase, the magnetic moments are aligned almost perpendicular to a pseudo five-fold symmetry axis, which should correspond to the easy-axis direction of a Tb atom. The magnetic properties similar to those of Au$_{72}$Al$_{14}$Tb$_{14}$ in spite of the difference in the electron-per-atom ratio suggest the robustness of the easy-axis anisotropy against the chemical substitution of the nonmagnetic atoms.

However, the theory fails to describe three weakly dispersive modes between 9 and 14 meV. These modes could be attributed to two-spinon bound states, which decay into free spinons away from the zone center and at a high temperature, giving rise to continuum scattering.

However, the microscopic model describing $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ is still debated partly because of a lack of analogue materials for $α$-RuCl$_{3}$, which prevents tracking of electronic properties as functions of controlled interaction parameters. Here, we report a successful synthesis of RuBr$_{3}$. The material RuBr$_{3}$~possesses BiI$_3$-type structure (space group: $R\overline{3}$) where Ru$^{3+}$ form an ideal honeycomb lattice. Although RuBr$_{3}$ has a negative Weiss temperature, it undergoes a zigzag antiferromagnetic transition at $T_\mathrm{N}=34$ K, as does $α$-RuCl$_{3}$. Our analyses indicate that the Kitaev and non-Kitaev interactions can be modified in ruthenium trihalides by changing the ligand sites, which provides a new platform for exploring Kitaev spin liquids.

It was further confirmed from the magnetic structure determination that the two Co$^{2+}$ ions in the adjacent edge-sharing octahedra have almost parallel (ferromagnetic) spin arrangement, indicative of a formation of a ferromagnetic spin dimer. The antiferromagnetic order is, in turn, stabilized by sizable inter-dimer antiferromagnetic interactions.

The occurrence of antiferromagnetic to spin-glass-like transition was noticed by increasing Mg. Transmission electron microscopy analysis evidenced a correlation between the magnetic transition and suppression of the monoclinic superlattice ordering with respect to the orientation of the Cd4 tetrahedron at T > 100 K. The possible origins of this phenomenon were discussed in detail. The occurrence of the antiferromagnetic to spin-glass -like magnetic transition is associated with the combination of chemical disorder due to a randomized substitution of Cd with Mg and the orientational disorder of the Cd4 tetrahedra.

Special attention was paid to regions of the spin-density-wave (SDW) antiferromagnetic order, spin-nematic phase, and superconducting transition. The BaFe2(As0.90P0.10)2 compound exhibits a reduced amplitude of SDW as compared to the parent compound and preserved universality class of two-dimensional magnetic planes with one-dimensional spins. The spin-nematic phase region for x = 0.10 is characterized by an incoherent magnetic order. BaFe2(As0.69P0.31)2 shows coexistence of a weak magnetic order and superconductivity due to the vicinity of the quantum critical point. The charge density modulations in the BaFe2(As0.67P0.33)2 and BaFe2(As0.47P0.53)2 superconductors are perturbed near Tc. Pronounced hump of the average quadrupole splitting across superconducting transition is observed for the system with x = 0.33. The phosphorus substitution increases the Debye temperature of the BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 compound. Moreover, experimental electron charge densities at Fe nuclei in this material conclusively show that it should be recognized as a hole-doped system. The measured Mössbauer spectral shift and spectral area are not affected by transition to the superconducting state. This indicates that neither the average electron density at Fe nuclei nor the dynamical properties of the Fe-sublattice in BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 are sensitive to the superconducting transition. Theoretical calculations of hyperfine parameters determining the patterns of Mössbauer spectra of BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 with x = 0, 0.31, 0.5, and 1.0 are performed within the framework of the density functional theory.

Magnetization measurements on single-crystal cubic SrCuTe$_2$O$_6$ with an applied magnetic field of along three inequivalent high symmetry directions $[100]$, $[110]$, and $[111]$ reveal weak magnetic anisotropy. The fits of the magnetic susceptibility to the result from a quantum Monte Carlo simulation on the Heisenberg spin-chain model, where the chain is formed via the dominant third-nearest-neighbor exchange interaction $J_3$, yield the intra-chain interaction $(J_3/k_B)$ between 50.12(7) K for the applied field along $[110]$ and 52.5(2) K along $[100]$ with about the same $g$-factor of 2.2. Single-crystal neutron diffraction unveils the transition to the magnetic ordered state as evidenced by the onset of the magnetic Bragg intensity at $T_\textrm{N1}=5.25(9)$ K with no anomaly of the second transition at $T_\textrm{N2}$ reported previously. Based on irreducible representation theory and magnetic space group analysis of powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction data, the magnetic structure in the Shubnikov space group $P4_132$, where the Cu$^{2+}$~$S=1/2$ spins antiferromagnetically align in the direction perpendicular to the spin chain, is proposed. The measured ordered moment of $0.52(6)~μ_B$, which represents 48% reduction from the expected value of $1~μ_B$, suggests the remaining influence of frustration resulting from the $J_1$ and $J_2$ bonds.

At low temperatures, iQC and 2/1 ACs exhibit spin-glass-like freezing for RE = Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho, while Er and Tm systems do not show freezing behaviour down to the base temperature ~ 2 K. The 1/1 ACs exhibit either spin-glass-like freezing or antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering depending on their constituent Mg content. The Tf values show increasing trend from iQC to 2/1 and 1/1 ACs. In contrast, the absolute values of Weiss temperature for iQCs are larger than those in 2/1 and 1/1 ACs, indicating that the total AFM interactions between the neighboring spins are larger in aperiodic, rather than periodic systems. Competing spin interactions originating from the long-range Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida mechanism along with chemical disorder of Cd/Mg ions presumably account for the observed spin-glass-like behavior in Cd-Mg-RE iQCs and ACs.

We investigate the crystal structure in multiferroic tetragonal perovskite Sr$_{1/2}$Ba$_{1/2}$MnO$_3$ with high accuracy of the order of 10$^{-3}$ Angstrom for an atomic displacement. The large atomic displacement for Mn ion from the centerosymmetric position, comparable with the off-centering distortion in the tetragonal ferroelectric BaTiO$_3$, is observed in the ferroelectric phase ($T_\mathrm{N}$ $\leq$ $T$ $\leq$ $T_\mathrm{C}$). In stark contrast, in the multiferroic phase ($T$ $\leq$ $T_\mathrm{N}$), the atomic displacement for Mn ion is suppressed, but those for O ions are enlarged. The atomic displacements in the polar crystal structures are also analyzed in terms of the ferroelectric modes. In the ferroelectric phase, the atomic displacements are decomposed into dominant positive Slater, negative Last, and small positive Axe modes. The suppression of Slater and Last modes, the sign change of Last mode, and the enlargement of Axe mode are found in the multiferroic phase. The ferroelectric distortion is well reproduced by a first-principles calculation based on Berry phase method, providing an additional information on competing mechanisms to induce the polarization, electronic $p$-$d$ hybridization vs. magnetic exchange-striction.

Neutron scattering experiments have been performed to elucidate magnetic properties of the quasicrystal approximant Au$_{70}$Si$_{17}$Tb$_{13}$, consisting of icosahedral spin clusters in a body-centered-cubic lattice. Bulk magnetic measurements performed on the single crystalline sample unambiguously confirm long-range ordering at $T_{\rm C} = 11.6 \pm 1$ K. In contrast to the simple ferromagnetic response in the bulk measurements, single crystal neutron diffraction confirms a formation of intriguing non-collinear and non-coplanar magnetic order. The magnetic moment direction was found to be nearly tangential to the icosahedral cluster surface in the local mirror plane, which is quite similar to that recently found in the antiferromagnetic quasicrystal approximant Au$_{72}$Al$_{14}$Tb$_{14}$. Inelastic neutron scattering on the powdered sample exhibits a very broad peak centered at $\hbar ω\simeq 4$ meV. The observed inelastic spectrum was explained by the crystalline-electric-field model taking account of the chemical disorder at the fractional Au/Si sites. The resulting averaged anisotropy axis for the crystalline-electric-field ground state is consistent with the ordered moment direction determined in the magnetic structure analysis, confirming that the non-coplanar magnetic order is stabilized by the local uniaxial anisotropy.

We have investigated the effect of Ge-substitution to the magnetic ordering in the B20 itinerant chiral magnet MnSi prepared by melting and annealing under ambient pressure. From metallurgical survey, the solubility limit of Ge was found to be $x=0.144(5)$ with annealing temperature $T_\mathrm{an} = 1073$ K. Magnetization measurements on MnSi$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$ samples show that the helical ordering temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ increases rapidly in the low-$x$ range, whereas it becomes saturated at higher concentration $x>~0.1$. The Ge substitution also increases both the saturation magnetization $M_\mathrm{s}$ and the critical field to the fully polarized state $H_\mathrm{c2}$. In contrast to the saturation behavior of $T_\mathrm{c}$, those parameters increase linearly up to the highest Ge concentration investigated. In the temperature-magnetic field phase diagram, we found enlargement of the skyrmion phase region for large $x$ samples. We, furthermore, observed the non-linear behavior of helical modulation vector $k$ as a function of Ge concentration, which can be described qualitatively using the mean field approximation.

High-resolution time-of-flight powder neutron diffraction and high-field magnetization were measured to investigate the magnetic structure and existence of a field-induced magnetic phase transition in the distorted kagome antiferromagnet Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$. Upon cooling from room temperature, the compound undergoes a structural phase transition at $T_\textrm{t}=185$ K from the rhombohedral space group $R\bar{3}m$ with the perfect kagome spin network to the monoclinic space group $P2_1/n$ with the distorted kagome planes. The distortion results in three inequivalent exchange interactions among the $S=1/2$ Cu$^{2+}$ spins that magnetically order below $T_\textrm{N}=20.2$ K. Magnetization measured with a magnetic field applied within the kagome plane reveals small in-plane ferromagnetism resulting from spin canting. On the other hand, the out-of-plane magnetization does not show a clear hysteresis loop of the ferromagnetic component nor a prominent anomaly up to 170 T, with the exception of the subtle knee-like bend around 90 T, which could indicate the 1/3 magnetization plateau. The combined analysis using the irreducible representations of the magnetic space groups and magnetic structure refinement on the neutron powder diffraction data suggests that the magnetic moments order in the magnetic space group $P2_1'/n'$ with the all-in-all-out spin structure, which by symmetry allows for the in-plane canting, consistent with the in-plane ferromagnetism observed in the magnetization.

We found that the best sample that has the chemical composition Li$_{0.95(4)}$Zn$_{1.92(8)}$Mo$_3$O$_8$ was obtained from the starting nominal composition with Li : Zn : Mo : O = $(1+w)$ : $(2.8-w)$ : $3$ : $8.6$ with $w = -0.1$, indicating that the stoichiometry is greatly improved compared to those in the earlier reports. For larger $w$ detailed structural analysis indicates that the mixed sites of Li and Zn are preferentially occupied by Li atoms, as well as the fraction of the non-magnetic secondary phase Zn$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$ decreases. Magnetic susceptibility of the improved stoichiometry powder samples shows a broad hump in the temperature range of 100 $< T <$ 200 K. This suggests that the development of antiferromagnetic correlations at the high temperatures is inherent to the ideal stoichiometric LiZn$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$.

The search for topological insulators has been actively promoted in the field of condensed matter physics for further development in energy-efficient information transmission and processing. In this context, recent studies have revealed that not only electrons but also bosonic particles such as magnons can construct edge states carrying nontrivial topological invariants. Here we demonstrate topological triplon bands in the spin-1/2 two-dimensional dimerized quantum antiferromagnet Ba$_2$CuSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$, which is closely related to a pseudo-one-dimensional variant of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, through inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The excitation spectrum exhibits two triplon bands and a clear band gap between them due to a small alternation in interdimer exchange interactions along the $a$-direction, which is consistent with the crystal structure. The presence of topologically protected edge states is indicated by a bipartite nature of the lattice.

Here we present Na$_3$Mn(CO$_3$)$_2$Cl as a new candidate compound where classical spins are coupled antiferromagnetically on the pyrochlore lattice, and report its structural and magnetic properties. The temperature dependences of the magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity, and the magnetization curve are consistent with those of an $S$ = 5/2 pyrochlore lattice antiferromagnet with nearest-neighbor interactions of 2 K. Neither an apparent signature of a spin-glass transition nor a magnetic order is detected in magnetization and heat capacity measurements, or powder neutron diffraction experiments. On the other hand, an antiferromagnetic short-range order from the nearest neighbors is evidenced by the $Q$-dependence of the diffuse scattering which develops around 0.85 Å$^{-1}$. A high degeneracy near the ground state in Na$_3$Mn(CO$_3$)$_2$Cl is supported by the magnetic entropy estimated as almost 4 J K$^{-2}$ mol$^{-1}$ at 0.5 K.

Using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), we investigate the deformation of the magnetic skyrmion lattice in bulk single-crystalline MnSi under electric current flow. A significant broadening of the skyrmion-lattice-reflection peaks was observed in the SANS pattern for current densities greater than a threshold value j_t ~ 1 MA/m^2 (10^6 A/m^2). We show this peak broadening to originate from a spatially inhomogeneous rotation of the skyrmion lattice, with an inverse rotation sense observed for opposite sample edges aligned with the direction of current flow. The peak broadening (and the corresponding skyrmion lattice rotations) remain finite even after switching off the electric current. These results indicate that skyrmion lattices under current flow experience significant friction near the sample edges, and plastic deformation due to pinning effects, these being important factors that must be considered for the anticipated skyrmion-based applications in chiral magnets at the nanoscale.

Below the antiferromagnetic transition temperature of $α$-Cu$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{7}$, spin Seebeck voltages whose magnetic field dependence is similar to that reported in antiferromagnetic MnF$_{2}$$\mid$Pt bilayers are observed. Though a small weak-ferromagnetic moment appears owing to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in $α$-Cu$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{7}$, the magnetic field dependence of spin Seebeck voltages is found to be irrelevant to the weak ferromagnetic moments. The dependences of the spin Seebeck voltages on magnetic fields and temperature are analyzed by a magnon spin current theory. The numerical calculation of spin Seebeck voltages using magnetic parameters of $α$-Cu$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{7}$ determined by previous neutron scattering studies reveals that the magnetic-field and temperature dependences of the spin Seebeck voltages for $α$-Cu$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{7}$$\mid$Pt are governed by the changes in magnon lifetimes with magnetic fields and temperature.

Glassiness is ubiquitous and diverse in characteristics in nature. Understanding their differences and classification remains a major scientific challenge. Here, we show that scaling of magnetic memories with time can be used to classify magnetic glassy materials into two distinct classes. The systems studied are high-temperature superconductor-related materials, spin-orbit Mott insulators, frustrated magnets, and dilute magnetic alloys. Our bulk magnetization measurements reveal that most densely populated magnets exhibit similar memory behavior characterized by a relaxation exponent of 1-n ~ 0.6(1). This exponent is different from 1-n ~ 1/3 of dilute magnetic alloys that was ascribed to their hierarchical and fractal energy landscape and is also different from 1-n=1 of the conventional Debye relaxation expected for a spin solid, a state with long range order. Furthermore, our systematic study on dilute magnetic alloys with varying magnetic concentration exhibits crossovers among the two glassy states and spin solid.

The notion of complex energy landscape underpins the intriguing dynamical behaviors in many complex systems ranging from polymers, to brain activity, to social networks and glass transitions. The spin glass state found in dilute magnetic alloys has been an exceptionally convenient laboratory frame for studying complex dynamics resulting from a hierarchical energy landscape with rugged funnels. Here, we show, by a bulk susceptibility and Monte Carlo simulation study, that densely populated frustrated magnets in a spin jam state exhibit much weaker memory effects than spin glasses, and the characteristic properties can be reproduced by a nonhierarchical landscape with a wide and nearly flat but rough bottom. Our results illustrate that the memory effects can be used to probe different slow dynamics of glassy materials, hence opening a window to explore their distinct energy landscapes.

Magnons, the spin-wave quanta, are disturbances that embody a wave propagating through a background medium formed by ordered magnetic moments. In an isotropic Heisenberg system, these disturbances vary in a continuous manner around an ordered spin structure, thus requiring infinitesimal energy as a wavevector approaches a magnetic zone centre. However, competing anisotropic interactions arising from broken symmetry can favour a distinct static and dynamic spin state causing a shift of the minimum point of the magnon dispersion to a nonreciprocal wavevector. Here we report the first direct evidence of these nonreciprocal magnons in an antiferromagnet. In the antiferromagnet we investigated, namely, noncentrosymmetric $α$-Cu$_2$V$_2$O$_7$, they are caused by the incompatibility between anisotropic exchange and antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions resulting in competing collinear and helical spin structures, respectively. The nonreciprocity introduces the difference in the phase velocity of the counter-rotating modes, causing the opposite spontaneous magnonic Faraday rotation of the left- and right-propagating spin-waves. The breaking of spatial inversion and time reversal symmetry is revealed as a magnetic-field-induced asymmetric energy shift, which provides a test for the detailed balance relation.

We measured magnetization, specific heat, electron spin resonance, neutron diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering of CrVMoO$_7$ powder. An antiferromagnetically ordered state appears below $T_{\rm N} = 26.5 \pm 0.8$ K. We consider that the probable spin model for CrVMoO$_7$ is an interacting antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ dimer model. We evaluated the intradimer interaction $J$ to be $25 \pm 1$ K and the effective interdimer interaction $J_{\rm eff}$ to be $8.8 \pm 1$ K. CrVMoO$_7$ is a rare spin dimer compound that shows an antiferromagnetically ordered state at atmospheric pressure and zero magnetic field. The magnitude of ordered moments is $0.73(2) μ_{\rm B}$. It is much smaller than a classical value $\sim 3 μ_{\rm B}$. Longitudinal-mode magnetic excitations may be observable in single crystalline CrVMoO$_7$.

High-field magnetization of the spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnet $α$-Cu$_2$V$_2$O$_7$ was measured in pulsed magnetic fields of up to 56 T in order to study its magnetic phase diagram. When the field was applied along the easy axis (the $a$-axis), two distinct transitions were observed at $H_{c1}=6.5$~T and $H_{c2}=18.0$~T. The former is a spin-flop transition typical for a collinear antiferromagnet and the latter is believed to be a spin-flip transition of canted moments. The canted moments, which are induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, anti-align for $H_{c1}<H<H_{c2}$ due to the anisotropic exchange interaction that favors the antiferromagnetic arrangement along the $a$-axis. Above $H_{c2}$, the Zeeman energy of the applied field overcomes the antiferromagnetic anisotropic interaction and the canted moments are aligned along the field direction. Density functional theory was employed to compute the exchange interactions, which were used as inputs for quantum Monte Carlo calculations and then further refined by fitting to the magnetic susceptibility data. Contrary to our previous report in Phys. Rev. B {\bf 92}, 024423, the dominant exchange interaction is between the third nearest-neighbor spins, which form zigzag spin-chains that are coupled with one another through an intertwining network of the nonnegligible nearest and second nearest-neighbor interactions. In addition, elastic neutron scattering under the applied magnetic fields of up to 10 T reveals the incommensurate helical spin structure in the spin-flop state.

Electrical resistivity measurements have been performed on the iron-based ladder compounds Ba$_{1-x}$Cs$_x$Fe$_2$Se$_3$ ($x$ = 0, 0.25, 0.65, and 1) under high pressure. A cubic anvil press was used up to 8.0 GPa, whereas further higher pressure was applied using a diamond anvil cell up to 30.0 GPa. Metallic behavior of the electrical conductivity was confirmed in the $x$ = 0.25 and 0.65 samples for pressures greater than 11.3 and 14.4 GPa, respectively, with the low-temperature $\log T$ upturn being consistent with weak localization of 2D electrons due to random potential. At pressures higher than 23.8 GPa, three-dimensional Fermi-liquid-like behavior was observed in the latter sample. No metallic conductivity was observed in the parent compounds BaFe$_2$Se$_3$ ($x $ = 0) up to 30.0 GPa and CsFe$_2$Se$_3$ ($x$ = 1) up to 17.0 GPa. The present results indicate that the origins of the insulating ground states in the parent and intermediate compounds are intrinsically different; the former is a Mott insulator, whereas the latter is an Anderson insulator owing to the random substitution of Cs for Ba.

A tiny adiabatic-demagnetization refrigerator (T-ADR) has been developed for a commercial superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer [Magnetic Property Measurement System (MPMS) from Quantum Design]. The whole T-ADR system is fit in a cylindrical space of the diameter $8.5$ mm and the length $250$ mm, and can be inserted into the narrow sample tube of MPMS. A sorption pump is self-contained in T-ADR, and hence no complex gas handling system is necessary. With the single crystalline Gd$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ garnet ($\sim 2$ grams) used as a magnetic refrigerant, the routinely achievable lowest temperature is $\sim 0.56$ K. The lower detection limit for a magnetization anomaly is $\sim 1 \times 10^{-7}$ emu, estimated from fluctuation of the measured magnetization. The background level is $\sim 5 \times 10^{-5}$ emu below 2 K at $H = 100$ Oe, which is largely attributable to a contaminating paramagnetic signal from the magnetic refrigerant.

Small angle neutron inelastic scattering measurement has been performed to study the magnon dispersion relation in the field-induced-ferromagnetic phase of the noncentrosymmetric binary compound MnSi. For the magnons propagating parallel or anti-parallel to the external magnetic field, we experimentally confirmed that the dispersion relation is asymmetrically shifted along the magnetic field direction. This magnon dispersion shift is attributed to the relativistic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which is finite in noncentrosymmetric magnets, such as MnSi. The shift direction is found to be switchable by reversing the external magnetic field direction.

Small angle neutron scattering measurements have been performed to study the thermodynamic stability of skyrmion-lattice phases in Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$. We found that the two distinct skyrmion-lattice phases [SkX(1) and SkX(2) phases] can be stabilized through different thermal histories; by cooling from the paramagnetic phase under finite magnetic field, the SkX(2) phase is selected. On the other hand, the 30$^{\circ}$-rotated SkX(1) phase becomes dominant by heating the sample from the ordered conical phase under finite field. This difference in stabilization is surprisingly similar to the irreversibility observed in spin glasses. The zero-field cooling results in the co-existence of the two phases. It is further found that once one of the skyrmion-lattice phases is formed, it is hardly destabilized. This indicates unusual thermal stability of the two skyrmion-lattice phases originating from an unexpectedly large energy barrier between them.

The previously reported ferromagnetic transition at 24 K was not detected in our improved quality samples. Instead, magnetic ordering was observed in the DC magnetic susceptibility at 3.8 K. Neutron powder diffraction further indicates that an incommensurate magnetic structure is established below 3.8 K, with the magnetic modulation vector (0.066, 0.066, 0.066) (r.l.u.). Using the magnetic representation analysis, we propose the block helical structure as a candidate for the incommensurate magnetic structure.

Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ undergoes a magnetic phase transition at $T_{\rm N}\,{\simeq}\,29\,$ K. The spin structure below $T_{\rm N}$ is Néel antiferromagnetic on the square lattice, which means that the nearest-neighbor interaction ($J_1$) is stronger than the next-nearest-neighbor interaction ($J_2$), in contrast to other isostructural compounds such as Ba$_2$CuWO$_6$ and Sr$_2$CuWO$_6$, for which $|J_1|\,{<}\,|J_2|$ is realized.

The temporal magnetic correlations of the triangular lattice antiferromagnet NiGa$_2$S$_4$ are examined through thirteen decades ($10^{-13}-1$~sec) using ultra-high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering, muon spin relaxation, AC and nonlinear susceptibility measurements. Unlike the short-ranged {\it spatial} correlations, the temperature dependence of the {\it temporal} correlations show distinct anomalies. The spin fluctuation rate decreases precipitously upon cooling towards $T^{\ast}=8.5$~K, but fluctuations on the microsecond time scale then persist in an anomalous dynamical regime for 4 K $<T\le T^{\ast}$. As this time scale exceeds that of single site dynamics by six orders of magnitude, these fluctuations bear evidence of emergent degrees of freedom within the short-range correlated incommensurate state of NiGa$_2$S$_4$.

All the iron-based superconductors identified to date share a square lattice composed of Fe atoms as a common feature, despite having different crystal structures. In copper-based materials, the superconducting phase emerges not only in square lattice structures but also in ladder structures. Yet iron-based superconductors without a square lattice motif have not been found despite being actively sought out. Here, we report the discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity in the iron-based spin-ladder material BaFe2S3, a Mott insulator with striped-type magnetic ordering below ~120 K. On the application of pressure this compound exhibits a metal-insulator transition at about 11 GPa, followed by the appearance of superconductivity below Tc = 14 K, right after the onset of the metallic phase. Our findings indicate that iron-based ladder compounds represent promising material platforms, in particular for studying the fundamentals of iron-based superconductivity.

Magnetic properties of the $S = 1/2$ antiferromagnet $α$-Cu$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{7}$ have been studied using magnetization, Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, and neutron diffraction. Magnetic susceptibility shows a broad peak at $\sim50$~K followed by an abrupt increase indicative of a phase transition to a magnetically ordered state at $T_{N}$ = 33.4(1) K. Above $T_N$, a fit to the Curie-Weiss law gives a Curie-Weiss temperature of $Θ=-73(1)$~K suggesting the dominant antiferromagnetic coupling. The result of the QMC calculations on the helical-honeycomb spin network with two antiferromagnetic exchange interactions $J_1$ and $J_2$ provides a better fit to the susceptibility than the previously proposed spin-chain model. Two sets of the coupling parameters $J_1:J_2=1:0.45$ with $J_1=5.79(1)$~meV and $0.65:1$ with $J_2=6.31(1)$~meV yield equally good fits down to $\sim T_N$. Below $T_{N}$, weak ferromagnetism due to spin canting is observed. The canting is caused by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction with an estimated $bc$-plane component $\left|D_p\right|$ $\simeq0.14J_1$. Neutron diffraction reveals that the $S=1/2$ Cu$^{2+}$ spins antiferromagnetically align in the $Fd'd'2$ magnetic space group. The ordered moment of 0.93(9)~$μ_B$ is predominantly along the crystallographic $a$-axis.

For all the do** levels, quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnetic fluctuations were observed as a broad peak localized at ${\it Q} = (1/2, 1/2, l)$. At lower energies, the peak shows an apparent anisotropy in the $hk0$ plane; longitudinal peak widths are considerably smaller than transverse widths. The anisotropy is larger for the higher do** level. These results are consistent with the random phase approximation (RPA) calculations taking account of the orbital character of the electronic bands, confirming that the anisotropic nature of the spin fluctuations in the normal states is mostly dominated by the nesting of Fermi surfaces. On the other hand, the quasi-two-dimensional spin correlations grow much rapidly for decreasing temperature in the $x = 0$ parent compound, compared to that expected for nearly antiferromagnetic metals. This may be another sign of the unconventional nature of the antiferromagnetic transition in BaFe$_2$As$_2$.

Although the spin-wave dispersion can be qualitatively understood in terms of linear spin-wave theory (LSWT), the excitation energies are renormalized by a factor of approximately 0.6 from those calculated by LSWT, almost irrespective of the momentum transfer. This inadequacy of LSWT, which is attributed to quantum fluctuations, provides evidence of negative quantum renormalization in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ kagome lattice antiferromagnet.

The polarization of the dominant dispersive modes (2 meV $<\hbarω< $7 meV) is determined and found consistent with a dimer series expansion with strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions ($D/J=0.18$). A weakly dispersive mode near 5 meV and shifted "ghosts" of the main modes are attributed to the enlarged unit cell below a $T=215$ K structural transition. Continuum scattering between 8 meV and 10 meV might be interpreted as a remnant of the kagome spinon continuum [T.-H. Han et al., Nature 492, 406 (2012)]
