Rapid recent development in laser technology and methods learned from relativistic heavy ion physics led to new possibilities for fusion. Using a Hydrogen rich UDMA-TEGDMA polymer fusion target, laser irradiation ionizes the target. If we implant nanoantennas into the target resonating to the laser light frequency massive number of electrons of the ionized plasma resonate within the nanoantenna forming a so called nanoplasmonic wave. Our kinetic model simulation with a Hydrogen target indicates that the field of these resonating electrons attracts and accelerates the surrounding protons of the plasma to multi-MeV energy. These protons are then energetic enough to achieve nuclear transmutation and fusion reactions. Without resonating nanoantenna there is no such collective proton acceleration, no energetic protons, and nuclear reactions at 30 mJ laser pulse energy.

We study self-gravitating multi-pion systems (pion stars) in a state of the Bose condensate. To ensure stability of such stars, it is assumed that they are immersed in the lepton background. Two different phenomenological equations of state (EoS) for the pion matter are used, some of them having the first order phase transition. The model parameters are chosen to reproduce the recent lattice QCD data at zero temperature and large isospin chemical potential. It is shown that the mass-radius diagrams of pion stars obtained with phenomenological EoS are close to ones calculated in the ideal gas model. We analyze properties of neutrino clouds which are necessary for stabilizing the pion stars.

Recent validation experiments on laser irradiation of polymer foils with and without implanted golden nano-particles are discussed. First we analyze characteristics of craters, formed in the target after its interaction with laser beam. Preliminary experimental results show significant production of deuterons when both the energy of laser pulse and concentration of nano-particles are high enough. We consider the deuteron production via the nuclear transmutation reactions $p+C\rightarrow d+X$ where protons are accelerated by Coulomb field, generated in the target plasma. We argue that maximal proton energy can be above threshold values for these reactions and the deuteron yield may noticeably increase due to presence of nano-particles.

Ground-state properties of finite drops of alpha particles (Q-balls) are studied within a field-theoretical approach in the mean-field approximation. The strong interaction of alphas is described by the scalar field with a sextic Skyrme-like potential. The radial profiles of scalar- and Coulomb fields are found by solving the coupled system of Klein-Gordon and Poisson equations. The formation of shell-like nuclei, with vanishing density around the center, is predicted at high enough attractive strength of Skyrme potential. The equilibrium values of energy and baryon number of Q-balls and Q-shells are calculated for different sets of interaction parameters. Empirical binding energies of alpha-conjugate nuclei are reproduced only if the gradient term in the Lagrangian is strongly enhanced. It is demonstrated that this enhancement can be explained by a finite size of alpha particles.

The equation of state and phase diagram of strongly interacting matter composed of $α$ particles are studied in the mean-field approximation. The particle interactions are included via a Skyrme-like mean field, containing both attractive and repulsive terms. The model parameters are found by fitting known values of binding energy and baryon density in the ground state of $α$ matter, obtained from microscopic calculations by Clark and Wang. Thermodynamic quantities of $α$ matter are calculated in the broad domains of temperature and baryon density, which can be reached in heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies. The model predicts both first-order liquid-gas phase transition and Bose-Einstein condensation of $α$ particles. We present the profiles of scaled variance, sound velocity and isochoric heat capacity along the isentropic trajectories of $α$ matter. Strong density fluctuations are predicted in the vicinity of the critical point at temperature $T_c\approx 14~\textrm{MeV}$ and density $n_c\approx 0.012~\textrm{fm}^{-3}$.

Recently NAano-Plasmonic, Laser Inertial Fusion Experiments (NAPLIFE) were proposed, as an improved way to achieve laser driven fusion. The improvement is the combination of two basic research discoveries: (i) The possibility of detonations on space-time hyper-surfaces with time-like normal (i.e. simultaneous detonation in a whole volume) and (ii) to increase this volume to the whole target, by regulating the laser light absorption using nano-shells or nano-rods as antennas. These principles can be realized in an in-line, one dimensional configuration, in the simplest way with two opposing laser beams as in particle colliders. Such, opposing laser beam experiments were also performed recently. Here we study the consequences of the Laser Wake Field Acceleration (LWFA) if we experience it in a colliding laser beam set up. These studies can be applied to laser driven fusion, but also to other rapid phase transition, combustion, or ignition studies in other materials.

The phase diagram of isospin-symmetric chemically equilibrated mixture of alpha particles and nucleons is studied in the mean-field approximation. Skyrme-like parametrization is used for the mean-field potentials as functions of partial densities of nucleons and alphas. We find that there is a threshold value a* of the parameter a(N-alpha) which describes the attractive interaction between alpha-particles and nucleons. At a(N-alpha)<a* the ground state of nuclear matter at zero temperature behaves as a pure system of interacting nucleons, whereas at a(N-alpha)>a* the nuclear ground state includes also a nonzero fraction of alphas. We demonstrate that the equation of state of such alpha-N system includes both the first-order liquid-gas phase transitions and the Bose-Einstein condensation of alpha particles.

Thermodynamical properties of an interacting system of scalar bosons at finite temperatures are studied within the framework of a field-theoretical model containing the attractive and repulsive self-interaction terms. Self-consistency relations between the effective mass and thermodynamic functions are derived in the mean-field approximation. We show that for a sufficiently strong attractive interaction a first-order phase transition develops in the system via the formation of a scalar condensate. An interesting prediction of this model is that the condensed phase appears within a finite temperature interval and is characterized by a constant scalar density of Bose particles.

Inertial Confinement Fusion is a promising option to provide massive, clean, and affordable energy for humanity in the future. The present status of research and development is hindered by hydrodynamic instabilities occurring at the intense compression of the target fuel by energetic laser beams. A recent proposal Csernai et al. (2018) combines advances in two fields: detonations in relativistic fluid dynamics and radiative energy deposition by plasmonic nano-shells. The initial compression of the target pellet can be eliminated or decreased, not to reach instabilities. A final and more energetic laser pulse can achieve rapid volume ignition, which should be as short as the penetration time of the light across the target. In the present study, we discuss a flat fuel target irradiated from both sides simultaneously. Here we propose an ignition energy with smaller compression, largely increased entropy and temperature increase, and instead of external indirect heating and huge energy loss, a maximized internal heating in the target with the help of recent advances in nano-technology. The reflectivity of the target can be made negligible, and the absorptivity can be increased by one or two orders of magnitude by plasmonic nano-shells embedded in the target fuel. Thus, higher ignition temperature and radiation dominated dynamics can be achieved. Here most of the interior will reach the ignition temperature simultaneously based on the results of relativistic fluid dynamics. This makes the development of any kind of instability impossible, which up to now prevented the complete ignition of the target.

The equation of state and phase diagram of isospin-symmetric chemically equilibrated mixture of alpha particles and nucleons are studied in the mean-field approximation. The model takes into account the effects of Fermi and Bose statistics for nucleons and alphas, respectively. We use Skyrme-like parametrization of the mean-field potentials as functions of partial densities, which contain both attractive and repulsive terms. Parameters of these potentials are chosen by fitting known properties of pure nucleon- and pure alpha matter at zero temperature. The sensitivity of results to the choice of the alpha-nucleon attraction strength is investigated. The phase diagram of the alpha-nucleon mixture is studied with a special attention paid to the liquid-gas phase transitions and the Bose-Einstein condensation of alpha particles. We have found two first-order phase transitions, stable and metastable, which differ significantly by the fractions of alpha particles. It is shown that states with alpha condensate are metastable.

The phase diagram of such systems exhibits two special lines in the chemical potential-temperature plane: one line which represents the first-order liquid-gas phase transition with the critical end point, and another line which represents the onset of Bose-Einstein condensation. The calculations are made for strongly-interacting matter composed of alpha particles. The phase diagram of this matter is qualitatively similar to that observed for the atomic He4 liquid. The sensitivity of the results to the model parameters is studied. For weak interaction coupling the critical point is located at the Bose-condensation line.

The comparable hydrodynamic simulations of heavy-ion collisions for (2+1)-flavor and Yang-Mills equations of state performed by using three different hydrodynamic codes are presented. Assuming slow chemical equilibration of quarks, the spectra and elliptic flows of thermal dileptons and photons are calculated for central Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC energy of $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} = 2.76$ TeV. It is shown that a suppression of quarks at early times leads to a significant reduction of the yield of the thermal dileptons, but only to a rather modest suppression of the $p_T$-distribution of direct photons. It is demonstrated that an enhancement of photon and dilepton elliptic flows might serve as a promising signature of the pure-glue initial state. Calculations based on Bjorken hydrodynamics suggest that collisions of small systems at intermediate energies available at RHIC or future FAIR facilities may show stronger effects associated with initial pure gluodynamic evolution.

Partonic matter produced in the early stage of ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions is assumed to be composed mainly of gluons, and quarks and antiquarks are produced at later times. To study the implications of such a scenario, the dynamical evolution of a chemically nonequilibrated system is described by the ideal (2+1)-dimensional hydrodynamics with a time dependent (anti)quark fugacity. The equation of state interpolates linearly between the lattice data for the pure gluonic matter and the lattice data for the chemically equilibrated quark-gluon plasma. We study the possibility that partonic matter produced at early stage of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions is out of chemical equilibrium. It is assumed that initially this matter is mostly composed of gluons, but quarks and antiquarks are produced at later times. The dynamical evolution of partonic system is described by the Bjorken-like ideal hydrodynamics with a time dependent quark fugacity. The results of this model are compared with those obtained by assuming the complete chemical equilibrium of partons already at the initial stage. It is shown that in a chemically non-equilibrium scenario the entropy gradually increases, and about 25% of the total final entropy is generated during the hydrodynamic evolution of deconfined matter. We argue that the (anti)quark suppression included in this approach may be responsible for reduced (anti)baryon to meson ratios observed in heavy-ion collisions at LHC energies.

Using an advanced version of the hadron resonance gas model we have found indications for irregularities in data for hadrons produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. These include an abrupt change of the effective number of degrees of freedom, a change of the slope of the ratio of lambda hyperons to protons at laboratory energies 8.6--11.6 AGeV, as well as highly correlated plateaus in the collision-energy dependence of the entropy per baryon, total pion number per baryon, and thermal pion number per baryon at laboratory energies 6.9-11.6 AGeV. Also, we observe a sharp peak in the dimensionless trace anomaly at a laboratory energy of 11.6 AGeV. On the basis of the generalized shock-adiabat model we demonstrate that these observations give evidence for the anomalous thermodynamic properties of the mixed phase at its boundary to the quark-gluon plasma. We argue that the trace-anomaly peak and the local minimum of the generalized specific volume observed at a laboratory energy of 11.6 AGeV provide a signal for the formation of a mixed phase between the quark-gluon plasma and the hadron phase. This naturally explains the change of slope in the energy dependence of the yield of lambda hyperons per proton at a laboratory energy of 8.6 GeV.

Thermodynamic properties of hot and dense hadronic systems with a hard-sphere interaction are calculated in the Boltzmann approximation. Two parametrizations of pressure as a function of density are considered: the first one, used in the excluded volume model and the second one, suggested earlier by Carnahan and Starling. The results are given for one-component systems containing only nucleons or pions, as well as for chemically equilibrated mixtures of pions, nucleons and delta resonances. It is shown that the Carnahan-Starling approach can be used in a much broader range of hadronic densities as compared to the excluded volume model. In this case superluminal sound velocities appear only at very high densities, in the region where the deconfinement effects should be already important.

We study the kinetics of antibaryon production and annihilation in an expanding system, assuming that it is spatially homogeneous and chemically equilibrated at the initial stage. By solving simplified rate equations for (anti)baryon abundances we study the deviations from chemical equilibrium at late stages. The calculations are done for different expansion rates and net-baryon-to-entropy ratios, covering the conditions from early Universe to heavy-ion collisions. Our analysis includes both stable (anti)baryons and resonances. We conclude that residual antibaryon abundances are very sensitive to the time scales of expansion. Our calculations naturally explain noticeable deviations of antiproton-to-pion and proton-to-pion ratios observed in nuclear collisions at the LHC energy from the thermal model predictions. We conclude that at high bombarding energies the chemical freeze-out of (anti)baryons should occur at lower temperatures as compared to mesons.

We consider a spherical volume of hot and dense hadronic matter (fireball) expanding into a vacuum. It is assumed that initially the fireball matter is in local thermal and chemical equilibrium with vanishing collective velocity. The time evolution of the fireball is studied in parallel within the GiBUU transport model and an ideal hydrodynamic model. The equation of state of an ideal hadronic gas is used in the hydrodynamic calculation. The same set of hadronic species is used in transport and fluid-dynamical simulations. Initial coordinates and momenta of hadrons in transport simulations have been randomly generated by using the Fermi and Bose distributions for (anti)baryons and mesons. The model results for radial profiles of densities and collective velocities of different hadronic species are compared at different times. We find that two considered models predict essential differences in time evolution of hadron abundances, which are especially pronounced for hyperonic species. This gives an evidence of a strong deviation from chemical equilibrium in expanding hadronic matter.

The model is applied for the domain of bombarding energies 1-160 AGeV which includes future NICA and FAIR experiments. Two equations of state are used: the first one corresponding to resonance hadron gas and the second one including the deconfinement phase transition. The initial state is represented by two Lorentz-boosted nuclei. Dynamical trajectories of matter in the central box of the system are analyzed. They can be well represented by a fast shock-wave compression followed by a relatively slow isentropic expansion. The parameters of collective flows and hadronic spectra are calculated under assumption of the isochronous freeze-out. It is shown that the deconfinement phase transition leads to broadening of proton rapidity distributions, increase of elliptic flows and formation of the directed antiflow in the central rapidity region. These effects are most pronounced at bombarding energies around 10 AGeV, when the system spends the longest time in the mixed phase. From the comparison with three-fluid calculations we conclude that the transparency effects are not so important in central collisions at NICA-FAIR energies (below 30 AGeV).

We study the dynamical response of the oxygen-16 nucleus to an incident antiproton using the Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck microscopic transport model with relativistic mean fields. A special emphasis is put on the possibility of a dynamical compression of the nucleus induced by the moving antiproton. Realistic antibaryon coupling constants to the mean meson fields are chosen in accordance with empirical data. Our calculations show that an antiproton embedded in the nuclear interior with momentum less than the nucleon Fermi momentum may create a locally compressed zone in the nucleus with a maximum density of about twice the nuclear saturation density. To evaluate the probability of the nuclear compression in high-energy antiproton-nucleus collisions, we adopt a two-stage scheme. This scheme takes into account the antiproton deceleration due to the cascade of antiproton-nucleon rescatterings inside the nucleus (first stage) as well as the nuclear compression by the slow antiproton before its annihilation (second stage). With our standard model parameters, the fraction of antiproton annihilation events in the compressed zone is about $10^{-5}$ for $\bar p ^{16}$O collisions at $p_{\rm lab}=3-10$ GeV/c. Finally, possible experimental triggers aimed at selecting such events are discussed.

Elliptic flow in heavy-ion collisions at incident energies $E_{lab}\simeq$ (1--160)A GeV is analyzed within the model of 3-fluid dynamics (3FD). We show that a simple correction factor, taking into account dissipative affects, allows us to adjust the 3FD results to experimental data. This single-parameter fit results in a good reproduction of the elliptic flow as a function of the incident energy, centrality of the collision and rapidity. The experimental scaling of pion eccentricity-scaled elliptic flow versus charged-hadron-multiplicity density per unit transverse area turns out to be also reasonably described. Proceeding from values of the Knudsen number, deduced from this fit, we estimate the upper limit the shear viscosity-to-entropy ratio as $η/s \sim 1-2$ at the SPS incident energies. This value is of the order of minimal $η/s$ observed in water and liquid nitrogen.

The equation of state of hadron resonance gas at finite temperature and baryon density is calculated taking into account finite-size effects within the excluded volume model. Contributions of known hadrons with masses up to 2 GeV are included in the zero-width approximation. Special attention is paid to the role of strange hadrons in the system with zero total strangeness. A density- dependent mean field is added to guarantee that the nuclear matter has a saturation point and a liquid-gas phase transition. The deconfined phase is described by the bag model with lowest order perturbative corrections. The phase transition boundary is found by using the Gibbs conditions with the strangeness neutrality constraint. The sensitivity of the phase diagram to the hadronic excluded volume and to the parametrization of the mean-field is investigated. The possibility of strangeness-antistrangeness separation in the mixed phase is analyzed. It is demonstrated that the peaks in the kaon to pion and lambda to pion multiplicity ratios can be explained by a nonmonotonous behavior of the strangeness fugacity along the chemical freeze-out line.

On the basis of the kinetic equation with selfconsistent relativistic mean fields acting on baryons and antibaryons, we study dynamical response of the nucleus to an antiproton implanted in its interior. By solving numerically the time-dependent Vlasov equation, we show that the compressed state is formed on a rather short time scale of about 4-10 fm/c. This justifies the assumption, that the antiproton annihilation may happen in the compressed nuclear environment. The evolution of the nucleus after antiproton annihilation is described by the same kinetic equation including collision terms. We show, that nucleon kinetic energy spectra and the total invariant mass distributions of produced mesons are quite sensitive observables to the antiproton annihilation in the compressed nucleus.

A 1+1 dimensional hydrodynamical model in the light-cone coordinates is used to describe central heavy-ion collisions at ultrarelativistic bombarding energies. Deviations from Bjorken's scaling are taken into account by choosing finite-size profiles for the initial energy density. The sensitivity of fluid dynamical evolution to the equation of state and the parameters of initial state is investigated. Experimental constraints on the total energy of produced particles are used to reduce the number of model parameters. Spectra of secondary particles are calculated assuming that the transition from the hydrodynamical stage to the collisionless expansion of matter occurs at a certain freeze-out temperature. An important role of resonances in the formation of observed hadronic spectra is demonstrated. The calculated rapidity distributions of pions, kaons and antiprotons in central Au+Au collisions at the c.m. energy 200 GeV per NN pair are compared with experimental data of the BRAHMS Collaboration. Parameters of the initial state are reconstructed for different choices of the equation of state. The best fit of these data is obtained for a soft equation of state and Gaussian-like initial profiles of the energy density, intermediate between the Landau and Bjorken limits.

We study the possibility of producing a new kind of nuclear systems which in addition to ordinary nucleons contain a few antibaryons (antiproton, antilambda, etc.). The properties of such systems are described within the relativistic mean-field model by employing G-parity transformed interactions for antibaryons. Calculations are first done for infinite systems and then for finite nuclei from He to Pb. It is demonstrated that the presence of a real antibaryon leads to a strong rearrangement of a target nucleus resulting in a significant increase of its binding energy and local compression. Noticeable effects remain even after the antibaryon coupling constants are reduced by factor 3-4 compared to G-parity motivated values. We have performed detailed calculations of the antibaryon annihilation rates in the nuclear environment by applying a kinetic approach. It is shown that due to significant reduction of the reaction Q-values, the in-medium annihilation rates should be strongly suppressed leading to relatively long-lived antibaryon-nucleus systems. Multi-nucleon annihilation channels are analyzed too. We have also estimated formation probabilities of bound antibaryon-nucleus systems in antiproton-nucleus reactions and have found that their observation will be feasible at the future GSI antiproton facility. Several observable signatures are proposed. The possibility of producing multi-quark-antiquark clusters is discussed.

Properties of cold nuclear matter are studied within a generalized Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model formulated on the level of constituent nucleons. The model parameters are chosen to reproduce simultaneously the observed nucleon and pion masses in vacuum as well as saturation properties of nuclear matter. The strongest constraints on these parameters are given by the empirical values of the nucleon effective mass and compression modulus at nuclear saturation density. A preferable value of the cut-off momentum, determining density of active quasinucleon states in the Dirac sea, is estimated to about 400 MeV/c. With the most reasonable choice of model parameters we have found a first order phase transition of the liquid-gas type at subsaturation densities and the gradual restoration of chiral symmetry at about 3 times the saturation density. Fluctuations of the scalar condensate around its mean-field value are estimated and shown to be large in the vicinity of chiral transition.

We compare different models for hadronic and quark phases of cold baryon-rich matter in an attempt to find a deconfinement phase transition between them. For the hadronic phase we consider Walecka-type mean-field models which describe well the nuclear saturation properties. We also use the variational chain model which takes into account correlation effects. For the quark phase we consider the MIT bag model, the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio and the massive quasiparticle models. By comparing pressure as a function of baryon chemical potential we find that crossings of hadronic and quark branches are possible only in some exceptional cases while for most realistic parameter sets these branches do not cross at all. Moreover, the chiral phase transition, often discussed within the framework of QCD motivated models, lies in the region where the quark phases are unstable with respect to the hadronic phase. We discuss possible physical consequences of these findings.

The long-range energy deposition by heavy-ion beams makes new types of shock wave experiments possible in the laboratory. We have investigated a situation that is of relevance to supernova dynamics in astrophysics, where a shock wave is irradiated by a flux of neutrinos depositing energy throughout the shock wave and surrounding matter, thus changing the behaviour of the running shock. We have carried out fluid-dynamical simulations to study generic features of stimulated shock waves. First we consider an idealized case assuming uniform energy deposition into a planar shock wave propagating through an ideal gas. Then we investigate more realistic situations realizable in laboratory experiments with heavy-ion beams. We have found that energy deposition leads to two important effects: acceleration of the shock front and decay of the shock strength. The possibility of laboratory experiments is briefly discussed.

We investigate the properties of charge-neutral $β$-equilibrium cold quark matter within the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. The calculations are carried out for different ratios of coupling constants characterizing the vector and scalar 4-fermion interaction, $ξ\equiv G_V/G_S$. It is shown that for $ξ< 0.4$ matter is self-bound and for $ξ< 0.65$ it has a first order phase transition of the liquid-gas type. The Gibbs conditions in the mixed phase are applied for the case of two chemical potentials associated with the baryon number and electric charge. The characteristics of the quark stars are calculated for $ξ= 0, 0.5$ and 1. It is found that the phase transition leads to a strong density variation at the surface of these stars. For $ξ= 1$ the properties of quark stars show behaviors typical for neutron stars. At $ξ\goo 0.4$ the stars near to the maximum mass have a large admixture of strange quarks in their interiors.

Abstract:
Equation of state of baryon rich quark matter is studied within the SU(3) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with flavour mixing interaction. Possible bound states (strangelets) and chiral phase transitions in this matter are investigated at various values of strangeness fraction S/3B. Equation of state of baryon rich quark matter is studied within the SU(3) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with flavour mixing interaction. Possible bound states (strangelets) and chiral phase transitions in this matter are investigated at various values of strangeness fraction S/3B. The model predictions are very sensitive to the ratio of vector (Gv) and scalar (Gs) coupling constants. At Gv/Gs=0.5 and zero temperature the maximum binding energy (about 15 MeV per baryon) takes place when strangeness fraction is about 0.4. Such strangelets are negatively charged and have typical life times of the order of 100 ns. Calculations are carried out also at finite temperatures. They show that bound states exist up to temperatures of about 15 MeV. The model predicts a first order chiral phase transition at finite baryon densities. The parameters of this phase transition are calculated as function of strangeness fraction.

Properties of dense quark matter in and out of chemical equilibrium are studied within the SU(3) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. In addition to the 4-fermion scalar and vector terms the model includes also the 6-fermion flavour mixing interaction. First we study a novel form of deconfined matter, meso-matter, which is composed of equal number of quarks and antiquarks. It can be thought of as a strongly compressed meson gas where mesons are melted into their elementary constituents, quarks and antiquarks. Strongly bound states in this quark-antiquark matter are predicted for all flavour combinations of quark-antiquark pairs. The maximum binding energy reaches up to 180 MeV per pair for mixtures with about 70% of strange quark-antiquark pairs. Equilibrated baryon-rich quark matter with various flavour compositions is also studied. In this case only shallow bound states appear in systems with a significant admixture (about 40%) of strange quarks (strangelets). Their binding energies are quite sensitive to the relative strengths of scalar and vector interactions. The common property of all these bound states is that they appear at high particle densities when the chiral symmetry is nearly restored. Thermal properties of meso-matter as well as chemically equilibrated strange quark matter are also investigated. Possible decay modes of these bound states are discussed.

Abstract:
Chemically non-equilibrated quark-antiquark matter is studied within the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. The equations of state of non-strange (q=u,d) and strange (q=s) quark-antiquark systems are calculated in the mean-field approximation. The existence of metastable bound states with zero pressure is predicted at finite densities and temperatures less than about 50 MeV. It is shown that the minimum…

It is shown that the minimum energy per particle occurs for symmetric systems, with equal densities of quarks and antiquarks. At T=0 these metastable states have quark number densities of about 0.5 fm^-3 for q=u,d and of 1 fm^-3 for q=s. A first order chiral phase transition is found at finite densities and temperatures. The critical temperature for this phase transition is approximately 75 MeV (90 MeV) for the non-strange (strange) baryon-free quark-antiquark matter. For realistic choices of parameters, the model does not predict the phase transition in chemically equilibrated systems. Possible decay channels of the metastable quark-antiquark droplets and their signatures in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are discussed.

Collective bremsstrahlung of vector meson fields in relativistic nuclear collisions is studied within the time-dependent Walecka model. Mutual deceleration of the colliding nuclei is described by introducing the effective stop** time and average rapidity loss of baryons. It is shown that electromagnetic decays of virtual omega-mesons produced by bremsstrahlung mechanism can provide a substantial contribution to the soft dilepton yield at the SPS bombarding energies. In particular, it may be responsible for the dilepton enhancement observed in 160 AGev central Pb+Au collisions. Suggestions for future experiments to estimate the relative contribution of the collective mechanism are given.

We study the bremsstrahlung of virtual omega mesons due to the collective deceleration of nuclei at the initial stage of an ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collision. It is shown that electromagnetic decays of these mesons may give an important contribution to the observed yields of dileptons. Mass spectra of positron-electron and muon pairs produced in central Au+Au collisions are calculated under some simplifying assumptions on the space-time variation of the baryonic current in a nuclear collision process. Comparison with the CERES data for 160 AGev Pb+Au collisions shows that the proposed mechanism gives a noticeable fraction of the observed lepton pairs in the intermediate region of invariant masses. Sensitivity of the dilepton yield to the in-medium modification of masses and widths of vector mesons is demonstrated.

Excitation functions and rapidity distributions of particles produced by this mechanism are calculated under some simplifying assumptions about the space-time variation of the baryon current in a nuclear collision. In the case of central Au+Au collisions the bremsstrahlung mechanism becomes comparable with particle production in incoherent hadron--hadron collisions above the AGS energies.
