Spontaneous onset of a low temperature topologically ordered phase in a 2-dimensional (2D) lattice model of uniaxial liquid crystal (LC) was debated extensively pointing to a suspected underlying mechanism affecting the RG flow near the topological fixed point. A recent MC study clarified that a prior crossover leads to a transition to nematic phase. The crossover was interpreted as due to the onset of a perturbing relevant scaling field originating from the extra spin degree of freedom. As a counter example and in support of this hypothesis, we now consider V-shaped bent-core molecules with rigid rod-like segments connected at an assigned angle. The two segments of the molecule interact with the segments of all the nearest neighbours on a square lattice, prescribed by a biquadratic interaction. We compute equilibrium averages of different observables with Monte Carlo techniques as a function of temperature and sample size. For the chosen molecular bend angle and symmetric inter-segment interaction between neighbouirng molecules, the 2D system shows two transitions as a function of T: the higher one at T1 leads to a topological ordering of defects associated with the major molecular axis without a crossover, imparting uniaxial symmetry to the medium described by the first fundamental group of the order parameter space $π_{1}$= $Z_{2}$ (inversion symmetry). The second at T2 leads to a medium displaying biaxial symmetry with $π_{1}$ = Q (quaternion group). The biaxial phase shows a self-similar microscopic structure with the three axes showing power law correlations with vanishing exponents as the temperature decreases.

The presence of stable topological defects in a two-dimensional (\textit{d} = 2) liquid crystal model allowing molecular reorientations in three dimensions (\textit{n} = 3) was largely believed to induce defect-mediated Berzenskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type transition to a low temperature phase with quasi long-range order. However, earlier Monte Carlo (MC) simulations could not establish certain essential signatures of the transition, suggesting further investigations. We study this model by computing its equilibrium properties through MC simulations, based on the determination of the density of states of the system. Our results show that, on cooling, the high temperature disordered phase deviates from its initial progression towards the topological transition, crossing over to a new fixed point, condensing into a nematic phase with exponential correlations of its director fluctuations. The thermally induced topological kinetic processes continue, however limited to the length scales set by the nematic director fluctuations, and lead to a second topological transition at a lower temperature. We argue that in the (\textit{d} = 2, \textit{n} = 3) system with a biquadratic Hamiltonian, the presence of additional molecular degree of freedom and local $Z_{2}$ symmetry associated with lattice sites, together promote the onset of an additional relevant scaling field at matching length scales in the high temperature region, leading to a crossover.

General quadratic Hamiltonian models, describing interaction between crystal molecules (typically with $D_{2h}$ symmetry) take into account couplings between their uniaxial and biaxial tensors. While the attractive contributions arising from interactions between similar tensors of the participating molecules provide for eventual condensation of the respective orders at suitably low temperatures, the role of cross-coupling between unlike tensors is not fully appreciated. Our recent study with an advanced Monte Carlo technique (entropic sampling) showed clearly the increasing relevance of this cross term in determining the phase diagram, contravening in some regions of model parameter space, the predictions of mean field theory and standard Monte Carlo simulation results. In this context, we investigated the phase diagrams and the nature of the phases therein, on two trajectories in the parameter space: one is a line in the interior region of biaxial stability believed to be representative of the real systems, and the second is the extensively investigated parabolic path resulting from the London dispersion approximation. In both the cases, we find the destabilizing effect of increased cross-coupling interactions, which invariably result in the formation of local biaxial organizations inhomogeneously distributed. This manifests as a small, but unmistakable, contribution of biaxial order in the uniaxial phase. The free energy profiles computed in the present study as a function of the two dominant order parameters indicate complex landscapes, reflecting the difficulties in the ready realization of the biaxial phase in the laboratory.

Investigations of the phase diagram of biaxial liquid crystal systems through analyses of general Hamiltonian models within the simplifications of mean-field theory (MFT), as well as by computer simulations based on microscopic models, are directed towards an appreciation of the role of the underlying molecular-level interactions to facilitate its spontaneous condensation into a nematic phase with biaxial symmetry. Continuing experimental challenges in realising such a system unambiguously, despite encouraging predictions from MFT for example, are requiring more versatile simulational methodologies capable of providing insights into possible hindering barriers within the system, typically gleaned through its free energy dependences on relevant observables as the system is driven through the transitions. The recent brief report from this group [B. Kamala Latha, et. al., Phys. Rev. E 89, 050501 (R), 2014] summarizing the outcome of detailed Monte Carlo simulations carried out employing entropic sampling technique, suggested a qualitative modification of the MFT phase diagram as the Hamiltonian is asymptotically driven towards the so-called partly-repulsive regions. It was argued that the degree of the (cross) coupling between the uniaxial and biaxial tensor components of neighbouring molecules plays a crucial role in facilitating, or otherwise, a ready condensation of the biaxial phase, suggesting that this could be a plausible f actor in explaining the experimental difficulties. In this paper, we elaborate this point further, providing additional evidences from curious variations of free-energy profiles with respect to the relevant orientational order parameters, at different temperatures bracketing the phase transitions.

Equilibrium director structures in two thin hybrid planar films of biaxial nematics are investigated through Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations based on a lattice Hamiltonian model within the London dispersion approximation. While the substrates of the two films induce similar anchoring influences on the long axes of the liquid crystal molecules (viz. planar orientation at one end and perpendicular, or homeotropic, orientations at the other), they differ in their coupling with the minor axes of the molecules. In Type-A film the substrates do not interact with the minor axes at all (which is experimentally relatively more amenable), while in Type-B, the orientations of the molecular axes at the surface layer are influenced as well by their biaxial coupling with the surface. Both films exhibit expected bending of the director associated with ordering of the molecular long axes due to surface anchoring. Simulation results indicate that the Type-A film hosts stable and noise free director structures in the biaxial nematic phase of the LC medium, resulting from dominant ordering of one of the minor axes in the plane of the substrates. High degree of this stable order thus developed could be of practical interest for in-plane switching applications with an external field. Type-B film, on the other hand, experiences competing interactions among the minor axes, due to incompatible anchoring influences at the bounding substrates, apparently leading to frustration, and hence to noisy equilibrium director structures.

We report on the synthesis of carbon nanotubes on quasicrystalline alloys. Aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) on the conducting faces of decagonal quasicrystals were synthesized using floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition. The alignment of the nanotubes was found perpendicular to the decagonal faces of the quasicrystals. A comparison between the growth and tube quality has also been made between tubes grown on various quasicrystalline and SiO2 substrates. While a significant MWNT growth was observed on decagonal quasicrystalline substrate, there was no significant growth observed on icosahedral quasicrystalline substrate. Raman spectroscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) results show high crystalline nature of the nanotubes. Presence of continuous iron filled core in the nanotubes grown on these substrates was also observed, which is typically not seen in MWNTs grown using similar process on silicon and/or silicon dioxide substrates. The study has important implications for understanding the growth mechanism of MWNTs on conducting substrates which have potential applications as heat sinks.

We consider in this paper, a few important issues in non-equilibrium work fluctuations and their relations to equilibrium free energies. First we show that Jarzynski identity can be viewed as a cumulant expansion of work. For a switching process which is nearly quasistatic the work distribution is sharply peaked and Gaussian. We show analytically that dissipation given by average work minus reversible work $W_R$, decreases when the process becomes more and more quasistatic. Eventually, in the quasistatic reversible limit, the dissipation vanishes. However estimate of $p$ - the probability of violation of the second law given by the integral of the tail of the work distribution from $-\infty$ to $W_R$, increases and takes a value of $0.5$ in the quasistatic limit. We show this analytically employing Gaussian integrals given by error functions and Callen-Welton theorem that relates fluctuations to dissipation in process that is nearly quasistatic. Then we carry out Monte Carlo simulation of non-equilibrium processes in a liquid crystal system in the presence of an electric field and present results on reversible work, dissipation, probability of violation of the second law and distribution of work

The confining effect of a spherical substrate inducing anchoring (normal to the surface) of rod-like liquid crystal molecules contained in a thin film spread over it has been investigated with regard to possible changes in the nature of the isotropic-to-nematic phase transition as the sample is cooled. The focus of these Monte Carlo simulations is to study the competing effects of the homeotropic anchoring due to the surface inducing orientational ordering in the radial direction and the inherent uniaxial order promoted by the intermolecular interactions. By adopting entropic sampling procedure, we could investigate this transition with a high temperature precision, and we studied the effect of the surface anchoring strength on the phase diagram for a specifically chosen geometry. We find that there is a threshold anchoring strength of the surface below which uniaxial nematic phase results, and above which the isotropic fluid cools to a radially ordered nematic phase, besides of course expected changes in the phase transition temperature with the anchoring strength. In the vicinity of the threshold anchoring strength we observe a bistable region between these two structures, clearly brought out by the characteristics of the corresponding microstates constituting the entropic ensemble.

A systematic suppression of the spin density wave transition temperature (TSDW) precedes the appearance of superconductivity in the system. A phase diagram is proposed based on the measured TSDW and superconducting transition temperature (TC) variations as a function of Ru composition. Band structure calculations, indicate introduction of electron carriers in the system upon Ru substitutiom. The calculated magnetic moment on Fe shows a minimum at x=1.0, suggesting that the suppression of the magnetic moment is associated with the emergence of superconductivity. Results of low temperature and high field Mossbauer measurements are presented. These indicate weakening of magnetic interaction with Ru substitution

We consider a lattice model of a liquid elastomer and Selinger-Jeon-Ratna Hamiltonian which accounts for homogeneous/inhomogeneous interactions among liquid crystalline units, interaction of local nematics with global strain, and with inhomogeneous external fields and stress. We find that when the local director is coupled strongly to the global strain the transition is strongly first order; the transition softens when the coupling becomes weaker. Also the transition temperature decreases with decrease of coupling strength. Besides we find that the nematic order scales nonlinearly with global strain especially for strong coupling and at low temperatures.

The pristine compound shows coexistence of superconductivity and magnetism. Four probe resistivity studies indicate a semiconductor like upturn in resistivity and absence of superconductivity even for Mn substitution levels as low as 1 mole%. a. c. susceptibility measurements show a progressive suppression of the magnetic transition temperature as well as a smearing of the magnetic transition as a function of Mn substitution. We report on the effect of Ni substitution at the Co site on the physical properties of NaxCoO2 system by investigating the series NaxCo1-yNiyO2 (x=0.75, 0<y<0.15). An upturn in the resistivity is observed in all Ni substituted samples as the temperature is lowered, suggestive of the occurrence of a Metal-Insulator Transition (MIT). The temperature at which this transition occurs increases with Ni content. The temperature dependence of the resistivity in the metallic region in the Ni substituted samples shows a T2 dependence, which is qualitatively different from that observed in the pristine sample. The evolution of the Fano asymmetry parameter, extracted by analyzing the lineshape of the IR active in-plane Co-O mode, both as a function of Ni concentration and temperature corroborates the occurrence of the MIT. It is argued that the progressive substitution of the Co4+ ions with Ni increases the probability of double occupancy and therefore the on-site Coulomb interaction energy leading to a shift in the thermodynamically driven MIT to higher temperatures.

We argue that charge state(valence) of the substituent has a dominant role in affecting the ferromagnetic - metallic ground state of CMR manganites.

Au clusters are grown by ion beam mixing with 100 KeV Ar+ irradiation on Au [40 nm]/SiO2 at various fluences and subsequent annealing at high temperature. The blue bands above ~3 eV match closely with reported values for colloidal Au nanoclusters and supported Au nanoislands. Radiative recombination of sp electrons above Fermi level to occupied d-band holes are assigned for observed luminescence peaks. Peaks at 3.1 eV and 3.4 eV are correlated to energy gaps at the X- and L-symmetry points, respectively, with possible involvement of relaxation mechanism. The blue shift of peak positions at 3.4 eV with decreasing cluster size is reported to be due to the compressive strain in small clusters. A first principle calculation based on density functional theory using the full potential linear augmented plane wave plus local orbitals (FP-LAPW+LO) formalism with generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for the exchange correlation energy is used to estimate the band gaps at the X- and L-symmetry points by calculating the band structures and joint density of states (JDOS) for different strain values in order to explain the blueshift of ~0.1 eV with decreasing cluster size around L-symmetry point.

Maximum entropy inversion of the diffraction data was done in order to obtain the variation in the spatial electron density distribution as a function of copper composition. These density maps show progressive positional and charge disorders in the V-O network induced by addition of copper. It is shown that the electrons donated by copper atoms are transferred to the specific vanadium atom sites.

The fusion cross sections from well above barrier to extreme sub-barrier energies have been analysed using the energy (E) and angular momentum (L) dependent barrier penetration model ({\small{ELDBPM}}). From this analysis, the adiabatic limits of fusion barriers have been determined for a wide range of heavy ion systems. The empirical prescription of Wilzynska and Wilzynski has been used with modified radius parameter and surface tension coefficient values consistent with the parameterization of the nuclear masses. The adiabatic fusion barriers calculated from this prescription are in good agreement with the adiabatic barriers deduced from {\small{ELDBPM}} fits to fusion data. The nuclear potential diffuseness is larger at adiabatic limit, resulting in a lower $\hbarω$ leading to increase of "logarithmic slope" observed at energies well below the barrier. The effective fusion barrier radius and curvature values are anomalously smaller than the predictions of known empirical prescriptions. A detailed comparison of the systematics of fusion barrier with and without L-dependence has been presented.

We discuss here a comparative study of the role of local structure and/or nature of local magnetic coupling on the electrical transport properties of Mn site substituted La-Ca-Mn-O perovskites. Particular emphasis is being paid to explore the strong correlation between the insulator-metal transition (TIM) and the residual resistivity (rhoo) upon substitution. There exists an inverse relationship between ro and TIM in the compounds under present discussion. Best fit for TIM Vs ro could be obtained for the compounds understudy to a first order exponential decay with a functional form TIM = TIMO + Aexp (-rhoo/t) than that to a power law. There is a previous report wherein the similar correlation in the case of rare earth substituted manganites has been attributed to Anderson-type electron localization. The "universal behavior" as has been observed between ro and TIM irrespective of the electronic, magnetic and chemical nature of the substituting elements in the Mn site substituted La-Ca-Mn-O perovskites needs a rigorous theoretical investigation.

Coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism is observed in all the Cu doped samples studied here. The zero field susceptibility data suggests formation of a spontaneous vortex phase. Cu do** decreases the ferromagnetic Curie temperature, whereas the superconducting transition temperature increases until an optimal concentration x~0.1. This reflects an increase in hole transfer to the CuO2 planes and reduction of ferromagnetic order within the ruthenate layers.

DC resistivity and ac susceptibility measurements were employed to extract the above parameters. T$_{C}$ versus the electron count (estimated from simple chemical valence count arguments) shows a universal behaviour, with T$_{C}$ being constant at the MgB$_{2}$ value for electron counts lower than in MgB$_{2}$ but rapidly decreasing for larger electron counts. The temperature dependence of resistivity in the normal state fits to the Bloch- Gruneisen formula, from which the Debye temperature, $θ_{D}$, and the $ρ_{0}$ are extracted. $θ_{D}$ variation with T$_{C}$ is not systematic, whereas $ρ_{0}$ versus T$_{C}$ shows a systematic variation that depends on the type of the chemical substituent. This dependence has a signature of the nature of the intraband/interband scattering affected by the chemical substitutions. d$ρ$/dT increases with C substitution, but decreases with Li and Cu substitution, implying that C substitution leads to the domination of conductivity by the $σ$ band, while in the Li/Cu substituted samples the $π$ band dominates conduction.

The LPM suppression of photon emission rates from the quark gluon plasma have been studied at different physical conditions of the plasma given by temperature and chemical potentials. The integral equation for the transverse vector function (f(p_t)) consisting of multiple scattering effects is solved for the parameter set {p,k,kappa,T}, for bremsstrahlung and AWS processes. The peak positions of these distributions depend only on the dynamical variable x=(T/kappa)|1/p-1/(p+k)|. Integration over these distributions multiplied by x^2 factor also depends on this variable x,leading to a unique global emission function g(x) for all parameters. Empirical fits to this dimensionless emission function, g(x), are obtained. The photon emission rate calculations with LPM suppression effects reduce to one dimensional integrals involving folding over the empirical g(x) function with appropriate distribution functions and the kinematic factors. Using this approach, the suppression factors for both bremsstrahlung and AWS have been estimated for various chemical potentials and compared with the variational method.

The photon emission rates from the quark gluon plasma have been studied considering LPM suppression effects. The integral equation for the transverse vector function (f(p)) that consists of multiple scattering effects has been solved using self-consistent iterations method. Empirical fits to the peak positions of the distributions from iteration method have been obtained for bremsstrahlung and annihilation with scattering (AWS) processes. The variational approach for f(p) calculation has been simplified considerably making some assumptions. Using this method, the photon emission rates at finite baryon density have been estimated. The LPM suppression factors for bremsstrahlung and annihilation with scattering (AWS) processes have been obtained as a function of photon energy and baryon density. The effect of baryon density has been shown to be rather weak and the suppression factors are similar to the zero density case. The suppression factors for AWS processes can be taken at zero density, whereas the bremsstrahlung suppression can be taken at zero density multiplied by a density dependent factor.

A significant increase in the lattice parameters indicated the presence of mixed valance state of Ru: Ru3+ and Ru4+. The resistivity of the doped compounds exhibited two features: a broad maximum and a relatively sharp peak. While a para to ferromagnetic transition could be observed for the latter peak, no magnetic signal either in ac susceptibility or in magnetization measurements could be observed for the broad maximum. The magnetic moment decreases non linearly from 3.55 to 3 mB over the Ru composition from 0 to 8.5 at.%. Based on the results of the present studies and on existing literature on the Mn-site substituted systems, we argue that a magnetic phase separation occurs in the Ru doped system. While the sharp peak in the resistivity corresponds to Ru4+ enriched region with a ferromagnetic coupling with neighboring Mn ions, the broad peak corresponds to a Ru3+ rich regions, with an antiferromagnetic coupling with neighboring Mn ions.

The (3+1) dimensional expansion of the quark gluon plasma (QGP) produced at finite baryon density has been studied using relativistic hydrodynamical approach. The pressure functional of the equation of state (EoS) has been determined for the interacting nuclear matter with mesons exchange. The EoS has been used to solve hydrodynamical equations using RHLLE algorithm. The space time expansion of the plasma has been studied for the cases of SPS energy and RHIC energy both at finite baryon density and for a hypothetical case of SPS energy at zero baryon density. The space-time evolution is slowed and the life times of QGP and mixed phases are shortened in the presence of finite baryon density. The space time integrated total photon yields have been estimated by convoluting the static emission rates with the space time expansion of the plasma. It has been shown that the total photon yield at zero rapidity is not significantly affected by the baryon density for SPS energy. The total photon yield is unaffected by the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect at SPS energy at zero baryon density, as the quark matter contribution to photon yield is less compared to hadronic matter.

Substitution did not change either the crystal symmetry or the oxygen stiochiometry. All substituents were found to suppress both the metal-insulator and ferromagnetic transition temperatures (TP(r) and TC respectively) to varied extents. Two main contributions identified for the suppression are the lattice disorder arising due to difference in the ionic radii (rMn3+-rM) between the substituent (rM) and the Mn3+ ion (rMn3+) and in the case of the substituents carrying a magnetic moment, the type of magnetic coupling between the substituent and that of the neighboring Mn ion.

Results of our study on the superconducting and normal state properties of the recently discovered superconductor MgCNi_3, the effect of Fe and Co substitution at the Ni site and the effect of pressure are reported. It is shown that a two band model provides a consistent interpretation of the temperature dependence of the normal state resistance and the Hall constant. Whereas band structure calculations suggest an increase in T_c upon partial substitution of Ni with Fe and Co, Co substitution quenches superconductivity and Fe substitution leads to an increase followed by a decrease in T_c. The observed variation of T_c may be explained in terms of a competition between increase in T_c due to increase in density of states and a decrease due to spin fluctuations. Based on these results, it is suggested that the spin fluctuations are weaker in Fe doped samples as compared to the Co doped ones. An initial decrease in T_c (and the normal state resistance) followed by an increase is observed on application of pressure. The decrease in T_c for small applied pressures can be understood in terms of the decrease in the density of states at the Fermi level. The subsequent increase in T_c with pressure is due to a lattice softening or a structural phase transition, consistent with the band structure calculations. It is conjectured that suppression of spin fluctuations by pressure may also be responsible for the observed increase in T_c at higher pressures.

Successful replacement of B by C in the series MgB2-xCx for values of x upto 0.3 are reported. Resistivity and ac susceptibility measurements have been carried out in the samples. Solubility of carbon, inferred from the observed change in the lattice parameter with carbon content indicates that carbon substitutes upto x=0.30 into the MgB2 lattice. The superconducting transition temperature, TC measured both by zero resistivity and the onset of the diamagnetic signal shows a systematic decrease with increase in carbon content upto x=0.30, beyond which the volume fraction decreases drastically. The temperature dependence of resistivity in the normal state fits to the Bloch-Gruneisen formula for all the carbon compositions studied. The Debye temperatures, extracted from the fit is seen to decrease with carbon content from 900K to 525K, whereas the electron-phonon interaction parameter, obtained from the McMillan equation using the measured TC and the Debye temperature, is seen to increase monotonically from 0.8 in MgB2 to 0.9 in the x=0.50 sample. The ratio of the resistivities between 300K and 40K versus TC is seen to follow the Testardi correlation for the C substituted samples. The decrease in TC is argued to mainly arise due to large decrease in the Debye temperature with C concentration and a decrease in the hole density of states at N(EF).

The hard photon productions from bremsstrahlung and annihilation with scattering that arise at two loop level are estimated from a chemically non-equilibrated quark gluon plasma using the frame work of thermal field theory. Although, the rate of photon production is suppressed due to unsaturated phase space, the above suppression is relatively smaller than expected due to an additional collinear enhancement (arise due to decrease in thermal quark mass) as compared to it's equilibrium counterpart. Interestingly, unlike the one loop case, the reduction in the two loop processes are found to be independent of gluon chemical poential, but strongly depends on quark fugacity. It is also found that, since the phase space suppression is highest for annihilation with scattering, the photon production is entirely dominated by bremsstrahlung mechanism at all energies. This is to be contrasted with the case of the equilibrated plasma where annihilation with scattering dominates the photon production particularly at higher energies.

The absorption spectrum is characterised by a broad band centred at 485 cm^{-1}, with shoulders at 333 and 387 cm^{-1}. Studies on the temperature dependence of absorption, indicate that these modes initially harden with the lowering of temperature, and this trend is arrested at ~ 100 K, below which they soften. Further, in the case of the mode at 333 cm^{-1}, there is a distinct softening associated with the superconducting transition at 39 K. The implications of these experimental results in the context of superconductivity in MgB2 are discussed.

This model indicates that the C_5 axis of the molecule is tilted by an angle $\approx$18^o from the monoclinic b axis in contrast with the molecular orientation proposed by Verheijen {\it et al.} [J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 166}, 287 (1992)] where the C_5 axis is parallel to the monoclinic b axis. In this calculation we have incorporated the effective bond charge Coulomb potential together with the Lennard-Jones potential between the molecule at the origin of the monoclinic unit cell and its six nearest neighbours, three above and three below. The minimum energy configuration for the molecular orientations turns out to be at $θ$=18^o, $φ$=8^o, and $ψ$=5^o, where $θ$, $φ$, and $ψ$ define the molecular orientations.

We follow the structural transformation in solid C$_{70}$ from the high temperature hcp to a low temperature monoclinic phase using x-ray diffraction studies at controlled cooling-rates from 0.0033 to 0.42 K/min. Rapid cooling of the sample gives the signature of a two-step transformation which disappears when the system is transformaed quasi-statically. These experimental results can be rationalised using a simple mean field, Langevin dynamical theory using a free energy functional with minima corresponding to the parent and two competing product phases such that one of these product phases remains metastable throughout. The implication of our results on the existence of the intermediate phase in the sequence, hcp-dhcp-monoclinic, of structural transitions in solid C$_{70}$ with the lowering of temperature is discussed.
