We focus on the statistical description of particle yields that include contribution from resonance decays. We demonstrate that the swift increase in the number of protons with magnetic field predicted in the HRG is due to the ill-defined description of higher-spin states. We discuss fluctuations of conserved charges and show that at present the qualitative comparison of the model predictions with the Lattice QCD data should be treated with care. We also discuss the principle of detailed balance which allows to study the magnetic field dependence of neutral resonances.

We compare the spectral functions with different chiral symmetry restoration scenarios. We find that the scenario with proper chiral symmetry restoration that takes into account the degenerate $ρ$ and $a_1$ mesons leads to an increase of the yield in the window of $1.1<M<1.4$ GeV. Whereas, the low-temperature theorem of chiral mixing extrapolated toward a chiral crossover, often used in the literature, leads to a substantial overestimate at $M=1.2$ GeV.

Utilizing state-of-the-art theoretical and multi-messenger constraints, we statistically determine the bulk properties of dense NS matter. We show that the speed of sound can be expressed in terms of the slope and curvature of the energy per particle. We demonstrate that the restoration of conformal symmetry requires changing the sign of the curvature of the bulk energy per particle as a function of energy density. Furthermore, we find that such a sign change is closely related to the peak in the speed of sound. We argue that the curvature of the energy per particle may serve as an approximate order parameter that signifies the onset of strongly coupled conformal matter in the NS core.

We investigate the effect of screening of the four-quarks contact interactions by the ring diagram at finite temperature and density in an effective chiral model inspired by QCD in the Coulomb gauge. As a consequence, a medium-dependent coupling naturally emerges which, in a class of chiral models, brings the chiral crossover temperature down to the value calculated in LQCD at low net-baryon density. Furthermore, it implies a stronger divergence of the chiral susceptibility at the critical point compared to the mean-field dynamics. At vanishing temperature, however, the transition sets in at unphysically small chemical potential, indicating a need for additional effects to compensate for the screening strength. We discuss the properties of an effective potential for a class of models described by momentum-independent gap equations. In particular, we introduce the method to construct an approximate effective potential from the gap equations to determine the location of the first-order phase transition.

Fluctuations and correlations of the net-baryon number play an important role in exploring critical phenomena in phase transitions of strongly interacting matter governed by Quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In this work, we use the parity doublet model to investigate the fluctuations of the net-baryon number density in hot and dense hadronic matter. The model accounts for chiral criticality within the mean-field approximation. We focus on the qualitative properties and systematics of the first- and second-order susceptibility of the net-baryon number density, and their ratios for nucleons of positive and negative parity, as well as their correlator. We show that the fluctuations of the positive-parity nucleon do not necessarily reflect the fluctuations of the total net-baryon number density at the phase boundary of the chiral phase transition. We also investigate the non-trivial structure of the correlator. Furthermore, we discuss and quantify the differences between the fluctuations of the net-baryon number density in the vicinity of the chiral and liquid-gas phase transition in nuclear matter. We indicate a possible relevance of our results with the interpretation of the experimental data on net-proton number fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions.

We perform a systematic study of dilepton emission in a hot QCD medium based on three different scenarios of chiral mixing, each of which yields a characteristic structure in the vector spectral function. The in-medium spectral functions are accommodated into the state-of-the-art hydrodynamic simulations for a relativistic viscous fluid to calculate the dilepton production rate, fully accounting for the space-time evolution of a created fireball in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We demonstrate that the low-temperature theorem of chiral mixing extrapolated toward a chiral crossover, often used in the literature, leads to critical shortcomings: the inadequacy of width broadening, and a substantial overestimate of the dilepton yield maximized around the invariant mass of $M = 1.2$ GeV. The proper prescription offers a milder yet sizable increase in the window of $1.1 < M < 1.4$ GeV as the direct signature of chiral symmetry restoration.

We investigate the fluctuations of the net-baryon number density in dense hadronic matter. Chiral dynamics is modeled via the parity doublet Lagrangian, and the mean-field approximation is employed to account for chiral criticality. We focus on the qualitative properties and systematics of the second-order susceptibility of the net-baryon number density for individual positive- and negative-parity nucleons whose masses become degenerate at the chiral restoration. It is shown that the second-order susceptibility of the positive-parity state can become negative when the chiral symmetry is restored, as a natural consequence of the unique relationship of the mass to the order parameter. Moreover, we find that such negative fluctuations are indicative of approaching the critical point on the chiral phase boundary. Our results may have consequences for the interpretation of the experimental data on net-proton fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions.

As the main origin of in-medium broadening, a set of baryon resonances that strongly couple to the vector mesons and the modifications of kaons and anti-kaons due to the Kaplan-Nelson term are included. It is shown that the vector spectra, even with the broadening effects, exhibit sizable signatures of chiral symmetry restoration thanks to the chiral mixing depending on three-momenta carried by the vector mesons. Those spectral functions are used to calculate the integrated production rates of lepton pairs, and a proper binning in momenta and potential decrease in the vector-meson masses due to chiral symmetry restoration are discussed in quantifying the signatures.

We find that the softening of the EoS driven by the early onset of $Δ$ matter due to partial restoration of chiral symmetry allows accommodating the modern multi-messenger astrophysical constraints on the mass, radius, and tidal deformability. The softening above the saturation density is accompanied by subsequent stiffening at high densities. We also find that the matter composition in the NS cores may be different upon variations of the repulsive interactions of $Δ$ baryons in hadronic matter.

We analyze the recent astrophysical constraints in the context of a hadronic equation of state (EoS), in which the baryonic matter is subject to chiral symmetry restoration. We show that with such EoS it is possible to reconcile the modern constraints on the neutron star (NS) mass, radius, and tidal deformability (TD). We find that the softening of the EoS, required by the TD constraint of a canonical $1.4~M_\odot$ NS, followed by a subsequent stiffening, required by the $2~M_\odot$ constraint, is driven by the appearance of $Δ$ matter due to partial restoration of chiral symmetry. Consequently, a purely hadronic EoS that accounts for the fundamental properties of quantum chromodynamics linked to the dynamical emergence of parity doubling with degenerate masses of nucleons and $Δ$ resonances can be fully consistent with multi-messenger data. Therefore, with the present constraints on the EoS, the conclusion about the existence of the quark matter in the stellar core may still be premature.

The tool of choice is an effective model built from one-loop expressions of the field determinants of gluon and ghost, in the presence of a Polyakov loop background field. We show that the curvature masses associated with the Cartan angles, which serve as a proxy to study the $A_0$-gluon screening mass, show a characteristic dip in the vicinity of the transition temperature. The strength of the observables, which reflects a competition between the confining and the deconfining forces, is sensitive to assumptions of dynamics, thus provides an interesting link between the $Z(N_c)$ vacuum structure and the properties of gluon and ghost propagators.

We investigate fluctuations of the net-baryon number density in hot hadronic matter. We discuss the interplay between chiral dynamics and repulsive interactions and their influence on the properties of these fluctuations near the chiral crossover. The chiral dynamics is modeled by the parity doublet Lagrangian that incorporates the attractive and repulsive interactions mediated via the exchange of scalar and vector mesons, respectively. The mean-field approximation is employed to account for chiral criticality. We focus on the properties and systematics of the cumulants of the net-baryon number density up to the sixth order. It is shown that the higher-order cumulants exhibit a substantial suppression in the vicinity of the chiral phase transition due to the presence of repulsive interactions. We find, however, that the characteristic properties of cumulants near the chiral crossover observed in lattice QCD results are entirely linked to the critical chiral dynamics and, in general, cannot be reproduced in phenomenological models, which account only for effective repulsive interactions via excluded-volume corrections or van-der-Waals type interactions. Consequently, a description of the higher-order cumulants of the net-baryon density in the chiral crossover requires a self-consistent treatment of the chiral in-medium effects and repulsive interactions.

We study the bulk and shear viscosity and the electrical conductivity in a quasiparticle approach to Yang-Mills theory and QCD with light and strange quarks to assess the dynamical role of quarks in transport properties at finite temperature. The interactions with a hot medium are embodied in effective masses of the constituents through a temperature-dependent running coupling extracted from the lattice QCD thermodynamics. In Yang-Mills theory, the bulk viscosity to entropy density ratio exhibits a non-monotonous structure around the phase transition temperature. In QCD, this is totally dissolved because of a substantial contribution from quark quasiparticles. The bulk to shear viscosity ratio near the phase transition behaves consistently to the scaling with the speed of sound derived in the AdS/CFT approach, whereas at high temperature it obeys the same parametric dependence as in perturbation theory. Thus, the employed quasiparticle model is adequate to capture the transport properties in the weak and strong coupling regimes of the theory. This feature is not altered by including dynamical quarks which, however, retards the system from restoring conformal invariance. We also examine the individual flavor contributions to the electrical conductivity and show that the obtained behavior agrees qualitatively well with the recent results of lattice simulations and with a class of phenomenological approaches.

We present a first step in develo** a benchmark equation-of-state (EoS) model for multi-messenger astronomy that unifies the thermodynamics of quark and hadronic degrees of freedom. A Lagrangian approach to the thermodynamic potential of quark-meson-nucleon (QMN) matter was used. In this approach, dynamical chiral-symmetry breaking is described by the scalar mean-field dynamics coupled to quarks and nucleons and their chiral partners, whereby its restoration occurs in the hadronic phase by parity doubling, as well as in the quark phase. Quark confinement was achieved by an auxiliary scalar field that parametrizes a dynamical infrared cutoff in the quark sector, serving as an ultraviolet cutoff for the nucleonic phase space. The gap equations were solved for the isospin-symmetric case, as well as for neutron star (NS) conditions. We also calculated the mass-radius (MR) relation of NSs and their tidal deformability parameter. The obtained EoS is in accordance with nuclear matter properties at saturation density and with the flow constraint from heavy ion collision experiments. For isospin-asymmetric matter, a sequential occurrence of light quark flavors is obtained, allowing for a mixed phase of chirally-symmetric nucleonic matter with deconfined down quarks. The MR relations and TDs for compact stars fulfill the constraints from the latest astrophysical observations for PSR J0740+6620, PSR J0030+0451, and the NS merger GW170817, whereby the tension between the maximum mass and compactness constraints rather uniquely fixes the model parameters. The model predicts the existence of stars with a core of chirally restored but purely hadronic (confined) matter for masses beyond $1.8~M_\odot$. Stars with pure-quark matter cores are found to be unstable against the gravitational collapse. This instability is shifted to even higher densities if repulsive interactions between quarks are included.

Net-proton number fluctuations can be measured experimentally and hence provide a source of important information about the matter created during relativistic heavy ion collisions. Particularly, they may give us clues about the conjectured QCD critical point. In this work the beam-energy dependence of ratios of the first four cumulants of the net-proton number is discussed. These quantities are calculated using a phenomenologically motivated model in which critical mode fluctuations couple to protons and anti-protons. Our model qualitatively captures both the monotonic behavior of the lowest-order ratio as well as the non-monotonic behavior of higher-order ratios, as seen in the experimental data from the STAR Collaboration. We also discuss the dependence of our results on the coupling strength and the location of the critical point.

We study the structural change of the vector spectral function and integrated production rates of dileptons in the presence of the chiral mixing induced exclusively at finite density. The mixing produces multiple bumps and peaks around the vacuum masses of the $ρ, ω$ and $φ$ resonances in the spectral function. The arising modification becomes pronounced when the mass difference between parity partners decreases. In particular, the emergent enhancement around the vacuum $φ$ meson in the production rates serves as an excellent signature of the partially-restored chiral symmetry in heavy-ion collisions.

We study the temperature-dependence of the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio in pure Yang-Mills theory and in QCD with light and strange quarks within kinetic theory in the relaxation time approximation. As effective degrees of freedom in a deconfined phase we consider quasiparticle excitations with quark and gluon quantum numbers and dispersion relations that depend explicitly on the temperature. The quasiparticle relaxation times are obtained by computing the microscopic two-body scattering amplitudes for the elementary scatterings among the quasiparticles. For pure Yang-Mills theory we show that the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio exhibits a characteristic non-monotonicity with a minimum at the first-order phase transition. In the presence of dynamical quarks the ratio smoothens while still exhibiting a minimum near confinement. Furthermore, there is a significant increase of the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio in QCD resulting from the quark contributions. This observation differs from previously reported estimates based on functional methods but is in line with perturbative QCD expectations at higher temperatures.

We extend the recently developed hybrid quark-meson-nucleon model by augmenting a six-point scalar interaction and investigate the consequences for neutron-star sequences in the mass-radius diagram. The model has the characteristic feature that, at increasing baryon density, the chiral symmetry is restored within the hadronic phase by lifting the mass splitting between chiral partner states (parity doubling), before quark deconfinement takes place. At low temperature and finite baryon density, the model predicts a first-, second-order chiral phase transition, or a crossover, depending on the expectation value of the scalar field, and a first-order deconfinement phase transition. We discuss two sets of free parameters, which result in compact-star mass-radius relations that are at tension with the combined constraints for maximum-mass ($2~M_\odot$) and the compactness (GW170817). We find that the most preferable mass-radius relations result in isospin-symmetric phase diagram with rather low temperature for the critical point of the chiral phase transition.

Event-by-event fluctuations of the net-proton number studied in heavy-ion collisions provide an important means in the search for the conjectured critical end point (CP) in the QCD phase diagram. We propose a phenomenological model in which the fluctuations of the chiral critical mode couple to protons and anti-protons. This allows us to study the behavior of the net-proton number fluctuations in the presence of the CP. Calculating the net-proton number cumulants, $C_n$ with n=1,2,3,4, along the phenomenological freeze-out line we show that the ratio of variance and mean $C_2/C_1$, as well as kurtosis $C_4/C_2$ resemble qualitative properties observed in data in heavy-ion collisions as a function of beam energy obtained by the STAR Collaboration at RHIC. In particular, the non-monotonic structure of the kurtosis and smooth change of the $C_2/C_1$ ratio with beam energy could be due to the CP located near the freeze-out line. The skewness, however, exhibits properties that are in contrast to the criticality expected due to the CP. The dependence of our results on the model parameters and the proximity of the chemical freeze-out to the critical point are also discussed.

Recent lattice QCD studies at vanishing density exhibit the parity-doubling structure for the low-lying baryons around the chiral crossover temperature. This finding is likely an imprint of the chiral symmetry restoration in the baryonic sector of QCD, and is expected to occur also in cold dense matter, which makes it of major relevance for compact stars. By contrast, typical effective models for compact star matter embody chiral physics solely in the deconfined sector, with quarks as degrees of freedom. In this contribution, we present a description of QCD matter based on the effective hybrid quark-meson-nucleon model. Its characteristic feature is that, under neutron-star conditions, the chiral symmetry is restored in a first-order phase transition deep in the hadronic phase, before the deconfinement of quarks takes place. We discuss the implications of the parity doubling of baryons on the mass-radius relation for compact stars obtained in accordance with the modern constraints on the mass from PSR J0348+0432, the compactness from GW170817, as well as the direct URCA process threshold. We show that the existence of high-mass stars might not necessarily signal the deconfinement of quarks.

We investigate the equation of state for a recently developed hybrid quark-meson-nucleon model under neutron star conditions of $β-$equilibrium and charge neutrality. The model has the characteristic feature that at increasing baryon density chiral symmetry is restored in a first order transition within the hadronic phase by lifting the mass splitting between chiral partner states, before quark deconfinement takes place. Most important for this study are the nucleon (neutron, proton) and $N(1535)$ states. We present three sets for the two free parameters which result in compact star mass-radius relations in accordance with modern constraints on the mass from PSR~J0437-4715 and on the compactness from GW170817. We also consider the threshold for the direct URCA process for which a new relationship is given and suggest as an additional constraint on the parameter choice of the model that this process shall become operative at best for stars with masses above the range for binary radio pulsars, $M>1.4~M_\odot$.

This system shows a large elastic softening in $C_{66}$ towards low temperatures. In addition to $C_{66}$, which originates from orthorhombic structural fluctuation, the samples near the optimal concentration show remarkable structural fluctuation in $C_{11}$ and $C_{33}$ elastic modes, which correspond to $Γ_{1}$ (C4) symmetry. It suggests the existence of diverse fluctuations in this system. Gr{\" u}neisen parameters were analyzed under some assumptions for structural and magnetic transition temperatures. Results showed that the Gr{\" u}neisen parameters for the inter-plane strain are remarkably enhanced toward the QCP, while those for the in-plane stress tend to turn down near the QCP. Gr{\" u}neisen parameters for the superconducting transition are anisotropic and shows remarkable Co-concentration dependence, suggesting that the in-plane isotropic compression and inter-layer elongation enhance the superconductivity. The correlation of Gr{\" u}neisen parameters between $T_{\rm S}$, $T_{\rm N}$ and $T_{\rm sc}$ shows $c$-axis elongation and its relevant role in the emergence of superconductivity in this system.

We investigate the fluctuations and correlations involving baryon number in hot hadronic matter with modified masses of negative-parity baryons, in the context of the hadron resonance gas. Temperature-dependent masses are adopted from the recent lattice QCD results and from a chiral effective model which implements the parity doubling structure with respect to the chiral symmetry. Confronting the baryon number susceptibility, baryon-charge correlation, and baryon-strangeness correlation and their ratios with the lattice QCD data, we show that the strong downward mass shift in hyperons can accidentally reproduce some correlation ratios, however it also tends to overshoot the individual fluctuations and correlations. This indicates, that in order to correctly account for the influence of the chiral symmetry restoration on the fluctuation observables, a consistent framework of in-medium effects beyond hadron mass shifts is required.

We study the mean-field thermodynamics and the characteristics of the net-baryon number fluctuations at the phase boundaries for the chiral and deconfinement transitions in the Hybrid Quark-Meson-Nucleon model. The chiral dynamics is described in the linear sigma model, whereas the quark confinement is manipulated by a medium-dependent modification of the particle distribution functions, where an additional scalar field is introduced. At low temperature and finite baryon density, the model predicts a first-, second-order chiral phase transition, or a crossover, depending on the expectation value of the scalar field, and a first-order deconfinement phase transition. We focus on the influence of the confinement over higher-order cumulants of the net-baryon number density. We find that whereas the cumulants show a substantial enhancement around the chiral phase transition, they are not as sensitive to the deconfinement transition.

The observable $χ_{BQ}$ is particularly sensitive to the details of the pion-nucleon interaction, which are consistently incorporated in the current scheme via the empirical scattering phase shifts. Comparing to the recent lattice QCD studies in the $(2+1)$-flavor system, we find that the natural implementation of interactions and the proper treatment of resonances in the S-matrix approach lead to an improved description of the lattice data over that obtained in the hadron resonance gas model.

We study the relation between quark confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD. Using lattice QCD formalism, we analytically express the various "confinement indicators", such as the Polyakov loop, its fluctuations, the Wilson loop, the inter-quark potential and the string tension, in terms of the Dirac eigenmodes. In the Dirac spectral representation, there appears a power of the Dirac eigenvalue $λ_n$ such as $λ_n^{N_t-1}$, which behaves as a reduction factor for small $λ_n$. Consequently, since this reduction factor cannot be cancelled, the low-lying Dirac eigenmodes give negligibly small contribution to the confinement quantities, while they are essential for chiral symmetry breaking. These relations indicate no direct, one-to-one correspondence between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD. In other words, there is some independence of quark confinement from chiral symmetry breaking, which can generally lead to different transition temperatures/densities for deconfinement and chiral restoration. We also investigate the Polyakov loop in terms of the eigenmodes of the Wilson, the clover and the domain-wall fermion kernels, respectively, and find the similar results. The independence of quark confinement from chiral symmetry breaking seems to be natural, because confinement is realized independently of quark masses and heavy quarks are also confined even without the chiral symmetry.

We compare two approaches in modeling repulsive interactions among hadrons: the excluded volume approximation and the S-matrix formalism. These are applied to study the thermodynamics of the $πN Δ$ system. It is shown that the introduction of an extraneous repulsion between pions and nucleons via the excluded volume approach, in addition to the interaction that generates the $Δ$-resonance, is incompatible with the analysis based on the physical phase shift of pion-nucleon scattering in the $P_{33}$ channel. This finding suggests that the repulsive force between hadrons is interaction-channel dependent and is hence unlikely to be captured by a single phenomenological parameter. The S-matrix approach employed here can be used, however, to provide useful estimates of the magnitude of the effective eigenvolume.

We find that the simplified treatment of the interactions in this channel, employed in the hadron resonance gas approach, leads to an overestimate of the strangeness fluctuations. We introduce an effective quark-meson-nucleon model for the QCD phase transitions at finite baryon density. The nucleon and the quark degrees of freedom are described within a unified framework of a chiral linear sigma model. The deconfinement transition is modeled through a simple modification of the distribution functions of nucleons and quarks, where an additional auxiliary field, the bag field, is introduced. The bag field plays a key role in converting between the nucleon and the quark degrees of freedom. The model predicts that the chiral and the deconfinement phase transitions are always separated. Depending on the model parameters, the chiral transition occurs in the baryon density range of $(1.5-15.5)n_0$, while the deconfinement transition occurs above $5 n_0$, where $n_0$ is the saturation density.

Thermal fluctuations and correlations between the light and heavy-light mesons are explored within a chiral effective theory implementing heavy quark symmetry. We show, that various heavy-light flavor correlations indicate a remnant of the chiral criticality in a narrow range of temperature where the chiral susceptibility exhibits a peak structure. The onset of the chiral crossover, in the heavy-light flavor correlations, is therefore independent from the light flavors. This indicates that the fluctuations carried by strange charmed mesons can also be used to identify the chiral crossover, which is dominated by the non-strange light quark dynamics.

Fate of charmed mesons near chiral symmetry restoration in hot matter

Abstract:
Chiral thermodynamics of charmed mesons is formulated at finite temperature within a $2+1+1$-flavored effective Lagrangian incorporating heavy quark symmetry. The charmed-meson mean fields act as an extra source which breaks the chiral symmetry explicitly. This leads to effective interactions between the light and heavy-light mesons, which intrinsically depend on temperature. Effective masses of t…

Effective masses of the scalar and pseudoscalar charmed-mesons tend to approach each other as increasing temperature, so that the splitting between the chiral partners is reduced. These chiral splittings are shown to be less sensitive to the light-quark flavors, attributed to the underlying heavy quark symmetry. Consequently, chiral symmetry restoration is more manifest for the strange charmed-mesons than for the strange light mesons. The effective masses are also compared with the results in the one-loop chiral perturbation theory. A substantial difference is found at a relatively low temperature, $T \sim f_π$.

New developments on hot and dense QCD in effective field theories are reviewed. Recent investigations in lattice gauge theories for the low-lying Dirac eigenmodes suggest survival hadrons in restored phase of chiral symmetry. We discuss expected properties of those bound states in a medium using chiral approaches. The role of higher-lying hadrons near chiral symmetry restoration is also argued from the conventional and the holographic point of view.
