Basic vacancy defects in twodimensional silicon carbide (2D-SiC) are examined by means of density functional theory calculations to explore their magneto-optical properties as well as their potential in quantum technologies. In particular, the characteristic hyperfine tensors and optical excited states of carbon-vacancy, silicon-vacancy, and carbon antisite-vacancy pair defects in 2D-SiC are determined that are the key fingerprints of these defects that may be observed in electron paramagnetic resonance and photoluminescence experiments, respectively. Besides the fundamental characterization of the most basic native defects, we show that the negatively charged carbon antisite-vacancy defect is a promising candidate for realizing a near-infrared single-photon quantum emitter with spin doublet ground state, where the negative charge state may be provided by nitrogen do** of 2D-SiC. We find that the neutral carbon-vacancy with spin triplet ground state might be used for quantum sensing with a broad emission in the visible.

Recently, reported a comments on the our paper [JAP21-AR-03574R].. For clarification, we applied the fingerprint theory to examine the similarity between the distinct structures. The fingerprint function is a crystal structure descriptor, an 1D-function related to the pair correlation function and diffraction patterns. It does not depend on absolute atomic coordinates, but only on interatomic distances. Small deviations in atomic positions will influence the fingerprints only slightly [1-3]. Fingerprint theory allows quantification of the degree of order and complexity of a crystal structure.

Topological semimetal phases in two-dimensional (2D) materials have gained widespread interest due to their potential applications in develo** nanoscale devices. Despite the prediction of the Dirac/Weyl points in a wide variety of 2D candidates, materials featuring topological nodal lines are still in great scarcity. Herein, we predict two stable thinnest films of aluminum diboride with hyper- and hypo-stoichiometries of Al$_2$B$_2$ and AlB$_4$ as new 2D nonmagnetic Dirac nodal line semimetals (NLSMs) which promise to offer many novel features. Our elaborate electronic structure calculations combined with analytical studies reveal that, in addition to the multiple Dirac points, these 2D configurations host various type-I closed nodal lines (NLs) around the Fermi level, all of which are semimetal states protected by the time-reversal and in-plane mirror symmetries. The most intriguing NL in Al$_2$B$_2$ encloses the K point and crosses the Fermi level with a considerable dispersion, thus providing a fresh playground to explore exotic properties in dispersive Dirac nodal lines. More strikingly, in the case of 2D superconductor AlB$_4$ which exhibits a high transition temperature, we provide the first evidence for a set of 2D nonmagnetic open type-II NLs in weak spin-orbit coupling limit, coinciding with closed type-I NLs near the Fermi level. The coexistence of superconductivity and nontrivial band topology in AlB$_4$ not only makes it a promising material to exhibit novel topological superconducting phases, but also the rather large energy dispersion of type-II nodal lines in this configuration, may offer a distinguished platform for realization of novel topological features in two-dimensional limit.

Low-symmetry Penta-PdPSe with intrinsic in-plane anisotropy synthesized successfully [(P. Li et al., Adv. Mater., 2102541, (2021)]. Motivated by this experimental discovery, we investigate the structural, mechanical, electronic, optical and thermoelectric properties of PdPSe monolayer via density functional theory calculations. The phonon dispersion, molecular dynamics simulation, the cohesive energy mechanical properties of the penta-PdPSe monolayer is verified to confirm its stability. The phonon spectrum represents a striking gap between the high-frequency and the low-frequency optical branches and an out-of-plane flexure mode with a quadratic dispersion in the long-wavelength limit. The Poissons ratio indicates that penta-PdPSe is a brittle monolayer. The penda-PdPSe monolayer is an indirect semiconductor with bandgap of 1.40 (2.07) eV using PBE (HSE06) functional. Optical properties simulation suggests that PdPSe is capable of absorbing a substantial range of visible to ultraviolet light. Band alignment analysis also reveals the compatibility of PdPSe for water splitting photocatalysis application. By combining the electrical and thermal transport properties of PdPSe, we show that a high PF is achievable at room temperature, thus making PdPSe a candidate material for thermoelectric application. Our findings reveal the strong potential of penta-PdPSe monolayer for a wide array of applications, including optoelectronic, water splitting and thermoelectric device applications.

We propose an electromechanical scheme where the electronic degrees of freedom of boron vacancy color centers hosted by a hexagonal boron nitride nanoribbon are coupled for quantum information processing. The mutual coupling of color centers is provided via their coupling to the mechanical motion of the ribbon, which in turn stems from the local strain. The coupling strengths are computed by performing ab-initio calculations. The density functional theory (DFT) results for boron vacancy centers on boron nitride monolayers reveal a huge strain susceptibility. In our analysis, we take into account the effect of all flexural modes and show that despite the thermal noise introduced through the vibrations one can achieve steady-state entanglement between two and more number of qubits that survives even at room temperature. Moreover, the entanglement is robust against mis-positioning of the color centers. The effective coupling of color centers is engineered by positioning them in the proper positions. Hence, one is able to tailor stationary graph states. Furthermore, we study the quantum simulation of the Dicke-Ising model and show that the phonon non-equilibrium phase transition occurs even for a finite number of color centers. Given the steady-state nature of the proposed scheme and accessibility of the electronic states through optical fields, our work paves the way for the realization of steady-state quantum information processing with color centers in hexagonal boron nitride membranes.

The band structure calculations showed spin-polarization in zigzag edges and a non-magnetic semiconducting character in armchair edges. For armchair-edges, we identify an indirect to direct band gap shift compared to the MoSi2N4 monolayer, and its energy gap increases with increasing NR width. Anisotropic electrical and magnetic behavior is observed via band structure calculations in the zigzag and armchair edges, where, surprisingly, for the one type of zigzag-edges configuration, we identify a Dirac-semimetal character. The appearance of magnetism and Dirac-semimetal in MoSi2N4 ribbon can give rise to novel physical properties, which could be useful in applications for next-generation electronic devices.

With the use of density functional theory calculations and addition of van der Waals correction, the graphene/HfS$_2$ heterojunction is constructed, and its electronic properties are examined thoroughly. This interface is determined as $n$-type Ohmic and the impacts of different amounts of interlayer distance and strain on the contact are shown using Schottky barrier height and electron injection efficiency. Dipole moment and workfunction of the interface are also altered when subjected to change in these two categories. The transition between Ohmic to Schottky contact is also depicted to be possible by applying a perpendicular electric field, proving this to be yet another useful method for tuning different properties of this structure. The conclusions given in this paper can exert an immense amount of influence on the development of two-dimensional HfS$_2$ based devices in the future.

A few point defects in three charge states (negative, positive and neutral) are considered. The formation energy calculations reveal that neutral and positive charge states of these defects are stable. We compute the zero-phonon-line energy, the Huang-Rhys (HR) factor and the photoluminescence spectrum for the available transitions in different charge states. The monolayer Gallium sulfide (GaS) was demonstrated as a promising two-dimensional semiconductor material with considerable band gaps. The present work investigates the band gap modulation of GaS monolayer under biaxial or uniaxial strain by using Density functional theory calculation. We found that GaS monolayer shows an indirect band gap that limits its optical applications. The results show that GaS monolayer has a sizable band gap. The uniaxial strain shifts band gap from indirect to direct in Gallium monochalcogenides (GaS). This behavior, allowing applications such as electroluminescent devices and laser. The detailed reasons for the band gap modulation are also discussed by analyzing the projected density of states (PDOS). It indicates that due to the role of p$_y$ orbital through uniaxial strain become more significant than others near the Fermi level. The indirect to direct band gap transition happen at $\varepsilon$=-10y$\%$. Moreover, by investigating the strain energy and transverse response of structures under uniaxial strain, we show that the GaS monolayer has the Poisson's ratio of 0.23 and 0.24 in the zigzag (x) and armchair (y) directions, respectively. Thus, we conclude that the isotropic nature of mechanical properties under strain.

As a consequence of the band structure and DOS of graphyne structures, it is found that the pristine graphyne and the Mg-decorated graphyne structures show a semiconducting nature and metallic behavior, respectively. Moreover, the migration behavior of Mg on graphyne for the main diffusion paths is determined by the Nudged Elastic Band (NEB) method.

Bi$_3$Mn$_4$O$_{12}$(NO$_3$) (BMNO) is a honeycomb bilayers anti-ferromagnet, not showing any ordering down to very low temperatures despite having a relatively large Curie-Weiss temperature. Using ab initio density functional theory, we extract an effective spin Hamiltonian for this compound. The proposed spin Hamiltonian consists of anti-ferrimagnetic Heisenberg terms with coupling constants ranging up to third intra-layer and fourth inter-layer neighbors. Performing Monte Carlo simulation, we obtain the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility and so the Curie-Weiss temperature and find the coupling constants which best matches with the experimental value. We discover that depending on the strength of the interlayer exchange couplings, two collinear spin configurations compete with each other in this system. Both states have in plane N{é}el character, however, at small interlayer coupling spin directions in the two layers are antiparallel (N$_1$ state) and discontinuously transform to parallel (N$_2$ state) by enlarging the interlayer couplings at a first order transition point. Classical Monte Carlo simulation and density matrix renormalization group calculations confirm that exchange couplings obtained for BMNO are in such a way that put this material {at the phase boundary of a first order phase transition}, where the trading between these two collinear spin states prevents it from setting in a magnetically ordered state.

Treatment of intrinsic mechanisms included polar-optical phonon scattering, piezoelectric scattering and acoustic deformation potential scattering. For extrinsic mechanisms, ionized impurity, dislocation scattering, and strain-induced fields were included. For bulk ZnO, the reported experimental data were corrected for removing the effects of a degenerate layer at the ZnO/sapphire interface via a two layer Hall effect model. Also, donor density, acceptor density and donor activation energy were determined via the charge balance equation. This sample exhibited hop** conduction below 50K and dislocation scattering closely controlled electron mobility closely. The obtained results indicated that the enhancement of electron mobility in double sample, compared with the single one, can be attributed to the reduction of dislocation density, two dimensional impurity density in the potential well due to background impurities, and/or interface charge and strain-induced fields, which can be related to better electron confinement in the channel and enhancement in the sheet carrier concentration of 2DEG in this sample.

Solving the Boltzmann transport equation for phonons, we predict a highly anisotropic thermal conductivity, of $30.4$ and $7.8$ W/mK along the zigzag and armchair directions, respectively at room temperature. Our calculations reveal that phonons with mean free paths between $20$ nm and $1$ $μ$m provide the main contribution to the large thermal conductivity in the zig-zag direction, mean free paths of phonons contributing to heat transport in the armchair directions range between $20$ and $100$ nm. The obtained low and anisotropic thermal conductivity, and feasibility of synthesis, in addition to other reports on high electron mobility, make arsenene a promising material for a variety of applications, including thermal management and thermoelectric devices.

Silver-doped ZnO nanoparticles were successfully fabricated at $400\,^{\circ}\mathrm{C}$ via a simple and rapid method based on short time solid state milling and calcination of precursor powders. The effect of Ag dilute do** on the structural, optical, and photocatalytic properties of ZnO nanoparticles was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis spectrophotometer and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy.~X-ray analysis revealed that Ag doped ZnO solidified in hexagonal wurtzite structure.~ The intensity of deep level emission was reduced with increasing silver do** in PL measurement.~The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurement predicted that Ag was mainly in the metallic state and ZnO was in the wurtzite structure.~ This metallic state accompanied by unique zinc oxide properties decolorized the methyl violet, efficiently.~ The first-principles calculation represented Ag deep level in ZnO with an n-type behavior, while in ZnO structure with grain boundary p-type nature via shallow states is dominant same as powder samples as studied in this present work. It was suggested that these Ag-doped ZnO nanoparticles may have good applications in optoelectronics, spintronics and wastewater treatment.

In transition metal doped ZnO, the energy position of dopant 3$d$ states relative to host conduction and valence bands is crucial in determining the possibilty of long range ferromagnetism. Density functional theory based estimates of the energy position of Co-3$d$ states in Co doped ZnO differ substantially depending upon the choice of exchange-correlation functional. In this work we investigate many-body $GW$ corrections on top of DFT$+U$ and hybrid-DFT groundstates to provide a theoretical benchmark for the quasiparticle energies in wurtzite ZnO:Co. Both single shot $G_0W_0$ as well as partially self-consistent $GW_0$ wherein the wavefunctions are held fixed at the DFT level but the eigenvalues in G are iterated, are considered. The predicted energy position of the minority spin Co-$t_2$ states is 3.0-3.6 eV above the ZnO conduction band minimum which is closer to hybrid-DFT based estimates.

The structural, electronic, and vibrational thermodynamic properties of the (ZnO)$_n$ (n=2-16) clusters are studied using density functional - full potential computations. The results show, small clusters up to $n=9$ stabilize in the 2D ring shape geometries while the larger clusters prefer the 3D cage like structures. The ring to cage structural cross over in ZnO clusters is studied by investigating the behavior of the Zn-O-Zn bond angle, the Zn-O bond strength, and the number of bonds in the systems. It is argued that 12 is the lowest magic number of ZnO clusters at ground state, while finite temperature vibrational excitations enhance the relative stability of the (ZnO)$_9$ cluster and make it a magic system at temperatures above about 170 K. The obtained electronic structure of ZnO clusters before and after applying the many-body GW corrections evidence a size induced red shift originated from the ring to cage structural cross over in these systems. The behavior of the extremal points of electron density of the clusters along with the extrapolated cluster binding energies at very large sizes may be evidences for existence of a metastable structure for large ZnO nanostructures, different with the bulk ZnO structure.
