The Bi${-}$Ni binary system has been of interest due to possible unconventional superconductivity aroused therein, such as time-reversal symmetry breaking in Bi/Ni bilayers or the coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism in Bi$_3$Ni crystals. While Ni acts as a ferromagnetic element in such systems, the role of strong spin-orbit-coupling element Bi in superconductivity has remained unexplored. In this work, we systematically studied the effects of Bi stoichiometry on the superconductivity of Bi$_x$Ni$_{1-x}$ thin films (${x} \approx$ 0.5 to 0.9) fabricated via a composition-spread approach. The superconducting phase map of Bi$_x$Ni$_{1-x}$ thin films exhibited a superconducting composition region attributable to the intermetallic Bi$_3$Ni phase with different amount of excess Bi, revealed by synchrotron X-ray diffraction analysis. Interestingly, the mixed phase region with Bi$_3$Ni and Bi showed unusual increases in the superconducting transition temperature and residual resistance ratio as more Bi impurities were included, with the maximum ${T}_{c}$ ($=$ 4.2 K) observed at $x \approx$ 0.79. A correlation analysis of structural, electrical, and magneto-transport characteristics across the composition variation revealed that the unusual superconducting $"$dome$"$ is due to two competing roles of Bi$\colon$ impurity scattering and carrier do**. We found that the carrier do** effect is dominant in the mild do** regime (0.74 $\leq {x} \leq$ 0.79), while impurity scattering becomes more pronounced at larger Bi stoichiometry.

The electricity grid has evolved from a physical system to a cyber-physical system with digital devices that perform measurement, control, communication, computation, and actuation. The increased penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) that include renewable generation, flexible loads, and storage provides extraordinary opportunities for improvements in efficiency and sustainability. However, they can introduce new vulnerabilities in the form of cyberattacks, which can cause significant challenges in ensuring grid resilience. %, i.e. the ability to rapidly restore grid services in the face of severe disruptions. We propose a framework in this paper for achieving grid resilience through suitably coordinated assets including a network of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. A local electricity market is proposed to identify trustable assets and carry out this coordination. Situational Awareness (SA) of locally available DERs with the ability to inject power or reduce consumption is enabled by the market, together with a monitoring procedure for their trustability and commitment. With this SA, we show that a variety of cyberattacks can be mitigated using local trustable resources without stressing the bulk grid. The demonstrations are carried out using a variety of platforms with a high-fidelity co-simulation platform, real-time hardware-in-the-loop validation, and a utility-friendly simulator.

Large language models have gained tremendous popularity in domains such as e-commerce, finance, healthcare, and education. Fine-tuning is a common approach to customize an LLM on a domain-specific dataset for a desired downstream task. In this paper, we present a valuable resource for fine-tuning LLMs developed for the Spanish language to perform a variety of tasks such as classification, masked language modeling, clustering, and others. Our resource is a collection of handwritten notary records from the seventeenth century obtained from the National Archives of Argentina. This collection contains a combination of original images and transcribed text (and metadata) of 160+ pages that were handwritten by two notaries, namely, Estenban Agreda de Vergara and Nicolas de Valdivia y Brisuela nearly 400 years ago. Through empirical evaluation, we demonstrate that our collection can be used to fine-tune Spanish LLMs for tasks such as classification and masked language modeling, and can outperform pre-trained Spanish models and ChatGPT-3.5/ChatGPT-4o. Our resource will be an invaluable resource for historical text analysis and is publicly available on GitHub.

In contrast to pedagogies like evidence-based teaching, personalized adaptive learning (PAL) distinguishes itself by closely monitoring the progress of individual students and tailoring the learning path to their unique knowledge and requirements. A crucial technique for effective PAL implementation is knowledge tracing, which models students' evolving knowledge to predict their future performance. Based on these predictions, personalized recommendations for resources and learning paths can be made to meet individual needs. Recent advancements in deep learning have successfully enhanced knowledge tracking through Deep Knowledge Tracing (DKT). This paper introduces generative AI models to further enhance DKT. Generative AI models, rooted in deep learning, are trained to generate synthetic data, addressing data scarcity challenges in various applications across fields such as natural language processing (NLP) and computer vision (CV). This study aims to tackle data shortage issues in student learning records to enhance DKT performance for PAL. Specifically, it employs TabDDPM, a diffusion model, to generate synthetic educational records to augment training data for enhancing DKT. The proposed method's effectiveness is validated through extensive experiments on ASSISTments datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that the AI-generated data by TabDDPM significantly improves DKT performance, particularly in scenarios with small data for training and large data for testing.

Quasi van der Waals Epitaxy (qvdWE) has been realized for decades at the interfaces between 3D and 2D materials or van der Waals materials. The growth of magnetic topological insulators (MTI) Cr: (BixSb1-x)2Te3 (CBST) on GaAs (111) substrates for Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect (QAH) is actually one of the examples of qvdWE, which is not well noticed despite the fact that its advantages have been used in growth of various MTI materials. This is distinguished from the growth of MTIs on other substrates. Although the qvdWE mode has been used in many 2D growth on III-V substrates, the specific features and mechanisms are not well demonstrated and summarized yet. Here in this work, we have for the first time shown the features of both coherent interfaces and the existence of strain originating from qvdWE at the same time.

Traditional deep learning approaches for breast cancer classification has predominantly concentrated on single-view analysis. In clinical practice, however, radiologists concurrently examine all views within a mammography exam, leveraging the inherent correlations in these views to effectively detect tumors. Acknowledging the significance of multi-view analysis, some studies have introduced methods that independently process mammogram views, either through distinct convolutional branches or simple fusion strategies, inadvertently leading to a loss of crucial inter-view correlations. In this paper, we propose an innovative multi-view network exclusively based on transformers to address challenges in mammographic image classification. Our approach introduces a novel shifted window-based dynamic attention block, facilitating the effective integration of multi-view information and promoting the coherent transfer of this information between views at the spatial feature map level. Furthermore, we conduct a comprehensive comparative analysis of the performance and effectiveness of transformer-based models under diverse settings, employing the CBIS-DDSM and Vin-Dr Mammo datasets. While Bangla is considered a language with limited resources, sentiment analysis has been a subject of extensive research in the literature. Nevertheless, there is a scarcity of exploration into sentiment analysis specifically in the realm of noisy Bangla texts. In this paper, we introduce a dataset (NC-SentNoB) that we annotated manually to identify ten different types of noise found in a pre-existing sentiment analysis dataset comprising of around 15K noisy Bangla texts. At first, given an input noisy text, we identify the noise type, addressing this as a multi-label classification task. Then, we introduce baseline noise reduction methods to alleviate noise prior to conducting sentiment analysis. Finally, we assess the performance of fine-tuned sentiment analysis models with both noisy and noise-reduced texts to make comparisons. The experimental findings indicate that the noise reduction methods utilized are not satisfactory, highlighting the need for more suitable noise reduction methods in future research endeavors. 6G networks are expected to provide more diverse capabilities than their predecessors and are likely to support applications beyond current mobile applications, such as virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR), AI, and the Internet of Things (IoT). In contrast to typical multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, THz MIMO precoding cannot be conducted totally at baseband using digital precoders due to the restricted number of signal mixers and analog-to-digital converters that can be supported due to their cost and power consumption. In this thesis, we analyzed the performance of multiuser massive MIMO-OFDM THz wireless systems with hybrid beamforming. Carrier frequency offset (CFO) is one of the most well-known disturbances for OFDM. For practicality, we accounted for CFO, which results in Intercarrier Interference. Incorporating the combined impact of molecular absorption, high sparsity, and multi-path fading, we analyzed a three-dimensional wideband THz channel and the carrier frequency offset in multi-carrier systems. With this model, we first presented a two-stage wideband hybrid beamforming technique comprising Riemannian manifolds optimization for analog beamforming and then a zero-forcing (ZF) approach for digital beamforming. We adjusted the objective function to reduce complexity, and instead of maximizing the bit rate, we determined parameters by minimizing interference. Numerical results demonstrate the significance of considering ICI for practical implementation for the THz system. We demonstrated how our change in problem formulation minimizes latency without compromising results. We also evaluated spectral efficiency by varying the number of RF chains and antennas. The spectral efficiency grows as the number of RF chains and antennas increases, but the spectral efficiency of antennas declines when the number of users increases.

Memes have become a distinctive and effective form of communication in the digital era, attracting online communities and cutting across cultural barriers. Even though memes are frequently linked with humor, they have an amazing capacity to convey a wide range of emotions, including happiness, sarcasm, frustration, and more. Understanding and interpreting the sentiment underlying memes has become crucial in the age of information. Previous research has explored text-based, image-based, and multimodal approaches, leading to the development of models like CAPSAN and PromptHate for detecting various meme categories. However, the study of low-resource languages like Bengali memes remains scarce, with limited availability of publicly accessible datasets. A recent contribution includes the introduction of the MemoSen dataset. However, the achieved accuracy is notably low, and the dataset suffers from imbalanced distribution. In this study, we employed a multimodal approach using ResNet50 and BanglishBERT and achieved a satisfactory result of 0.71 weighted F1-score, performed comparison with unimodal approaches, and interpreted behaviors of the models using explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) techniques.

Firstly, we explore the extent to which Reinforcement Learning (RL) agents exhibit multimodal distributions in the context of stop-and-go traffic scenarios. Secondly, we investigate how RL-controlled Robot Vehicles (RVs) effectively navigate their direction and coordinate with other vehicles in complex traffic environments. Our analysis encompasses an examination of multimodality within queue length, outflow, and platoon size distributions for both Robot and Human-driven Vehicles (HVs). Additionally, we assess the Pearson coefficient correlation, shedding light on relationships between queue length and outflow, considering both identical and differing travel directions. Furthermore, we delve into causal inference models, shedding light on the factors influencing queue length across scenarios involving varying travel directions. Through these investigations, this report contributes valuable insights into the behaviors of mixed traffic (RVs and HVs) in traffic management and coordination.

In this study, we propose a pseudo-labeling approach to develop a large-scale domain-agnostic ASR dataset. With the proposed methodology, we developed a 20k+ hours labeled Bangla speech dataset covering diverse topics, speaking styles, dialects, noisy environments, and conversational scenarios. We then exploited the developed corpus to design a conformer-based ASR system. We benchmarked the trained ASR with publicly available datasets and compared it with other available models. Here we study the stability of charge order in the kagome metal ScV6Sn6. Synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements reveal high-temperature, short-range charge correlations at the wave vectors along q=(1/3,1/3,1/2) whose inter-layer correlation lengths diverge upon cooling. At the charge order transition, this divergence is interrupted and long-range order freezes in along q=(1/3,1/3,1/3), as previously reported, while disorder enables the charge correlations to persist at the q=(1/3,1/3,1/2) wave vector down to the lowest temperatures measured. Both short-range and long-range charge correlations seemingly arise from the same instability and both are rapidly quenched upon the introduction of larger Y ions onto the Sc sites. Our results validate the theoretical prediction of the primary lattice instability at q=(1/3,1/3,1/2), and we present a heuristic picture for viewing the frustration of charge order in this compound.

The identification of key factors such as medications, diseases, and relationships within electronic health records and clinical notes has a wide range of applications in the clinical field. In the N2C2 2022 competitions, various tasks were presented to promote the identification of key factors in electronic health records (EHRs) using the Contextualized Medication Event Dataset (CMED). Pretrained large language models (LLMs) demonstrated exceptional performance in these tasks. This study aims to explore the utilization of LLMs, specifically ChatGPT, for data augmentation to overcome the limited availability of annotated data for identifying the key factors in EHRs. Additionally, different pre-trained BERT models, initially trained on extensive datasets like Wikipedia and MIMIC, were employed to develop models for identifying these key variables in EHRs through fine-tuning on augmented datasets. The experimental results of two EHR analysis tasks, namely medication identification and medication event classification, indicate that data augmentation based on ChatGPT proves beneficial in improving performance for both medication identification and medication event classification.

These images provide vital information for clinical diagnosis, and in this chapter, we will explore the use of X-ray, MRI, and nuclear imaging in detecting severe illnesses. However, manual evaluation and storage of these images can be a challenging and time-consuming process. To address this issue, artificial intelligence (AI)-based techniques, particularly deep learning (DL), have become increasingly popular for systematic feature extraction and classification from imaging modalities, thereby aiding doctors in making rapid and accurate diagnoses. In this review study, we will focus on how AI-based approaches, particularly the use of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), can assist in disease detection through medical imaging technology. CNN is a commonly used approach for image analysis due to its ability to extract features from raw input images, and as such, will be the primary area of discussion in this study. Therefore, we have considered CNN as our discussion area in this study to diagnose ailments using medical imaging technology.

Chiral effective field theory ($χ$EFT) provides a framework for obtaining internucleon interactions in a systematically improvable fashion from first principles, while also providing for the derivation of consistent electroweak current operators. In this work, we apply consistently derived interactions and currents towards calculating the magnetic dipole moments of the $A=3$ systems Triton and Helium-3. We focus here on LENPIC interactions obtained using semilocal coordinate-space (SCS) regularization. Starting from the momentum-space representation of the LENPIC $χ$EFT vector current, we derive the SCS-regularized magnetic dipole operator up through N2LO. We then carry out no-core shell model calculations for Triton and Helium-3 systems, using the SCS LENPIC interaction at N2LO in $χ$EFT, and evaluate the magnetic dipole moments obtained using the consistently derived one-nucleon and two-nucleon electromagnetic currents. As anticipated by prior results with $χ$EFT currents, the current corrections through N2LO provide improved, but not yet complete, agreement with experiment for the Triton and Helium-3 magnetic dipole moments.

Despite its excellent overall performance in segmenting multimodal medical images, the traditional U-Net structure appears to be inadequate in various ways. There are certain U-Net design modifications, such as MultiResUNet, Connected-UNets, and AU-Net, that have improved overall performance in areas where the conventional U-Net architecture appears to be deficient. Following the success of UNet and its variants, we have presented two enhanced versions of the Connected-UNets architecture: ConnectedUNets+ and ConnectedUNets++. In ConnectedUNets+, we have replaced the simple skip connections of Connected-UNets architecture with residual skip connections, while in ConnectedUNets++, we have modified the encoder-decoder structure along with employing residual skip connections. We have evaluated our proposed architectures on two publicly available datasets, the Curated Breast Imaging Subset of Digital Database for Screening Mammography (CBIS-DDSM) and INbreast.

A notion of disturbance propagation stability is defined for dynamical network processes, in terms of decrescence of an input-output energy metric along cutsets away from the disturbance source. A characterization of the disturbance propagation notion is developed for a canonical model for synchronization of linearly-coupled homogeneous subsystems. Specifically, propagation stability is equivalenced with the frequency response of a certain local closed-loop model, which is defined from the subsystem model and local network connections, being sub-unity gain. For the case where the subsystem is single-input single-output (SISO), a further simplification in terms of the subsystem's open loop Nyquist plot is obtained. An extension of the disturbance propagation stability concept toward imperviousness of subnetworks to disturbances is briefly developed, and an example focused on networks with planar subsystems is considered.

The recently released IEEE 802.15.6 standard specifies several physical (PHY) layers and medium access control (MAC) layer protocols for variety of medical and non-medical applications of Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN). The medical applications of WBAN has several obligatory requirements and constrains viz. high reliability, strict delay deadlines and low power consumption. The standard IEEE 802.15.6 MAC scheme is not able to fulfil the all requirements of medical applications of WBAN. To address this issue we propose an IEEE 802.15.6-based MAC scheme that is the modification of superframe structure, user priorities and access mechanism of standard IEEE 802.15.6 MAC scheme. The proposed superframe has three access phases: random access phases (RAP), manage access phases (MAP) and contention access phase (CAP). The proposed four user priorities nodes access the channel during RAP using CAMA/CA mechanism with a large value of contention window. The proposed MAC scheme uses RTS/CTS access mechanism instead of basic access mechanism to mitigate the effect of hidden and expose terminal problem. Moreover, we develop an analytical model to evaluate the performance of proposed MAC scheme and solve the analytical model using Maple. The results show that the modified IEEE 802.15.6 MAC scheme achieve the better performance in terms of reliability, throughput, average access delay, energy consumption, channel utilization and fairness compared to standard IEEE 802.15.6 MAC scheme in E-health applications.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) has extreme potential to change the future wireless sensor network (WSN). The UAV-based WSN performances is influenced by different system parameters. To investigate this issue, it is necessary to analyses the effects of system parameters on the UAV-based WSN performance. In this paper, we design a NS-3 script for UAV-based WSN according to the hierarchical manner of TCP/IP model. We configure all layers by using NS-3 model objects and set and modify the values used by objects to investigate the effects of system parameters (access mechanism, UAV trajectory pattern, UAV velocity, number of sensors, and sensor traffic generation rate) on throughput, and average delay. The simulation results show that the RTS/CTS access mechanism provides better performance than the basic data access mechanism and the mobility model which has been prescribed shows higher performance than the random mobility model. Moreover, the results indicate that higher velocity of UAV degrades the system performance in terms of throughput and delay. Our design procedure represents a good guideline for new NS-3 users to design and modify script and results greatly benefit the network design and management.

A graph-theoretic analysis is undertaken for a compendium of input-output (transfer) metrics of a standard discrete-time linear synchronization model, including lp gains, frequency responses, frequency-band energy, and Markov parameters. We show that these transfer metrics exhibit a spatial degradation, such that they are monotonically nonincreasing along vertex cutsets away from an exogenous input. We use this spatial analysis to characterize signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) in diffusive networks driven by process noise, and to develop a notion of propagation stability for dynamical networks. Finally, the formal results are illustrated through an example.

Interest in high entropy alloy thermoelectric materials is predicated on achieving ultralow lattice thermal conductivity $κ\sub{L}$ through large compositional disorder. However, here we show that for a given mechanism, such as mass contrast phonon scattering, $κ\sub{L}$ will be minimized along the binary alloy with the highest mass contrast, such that adding an intermediate-mass atom to increase atomic disorder can increase thermal conductivity. Only when each component adds an independent scattering mechanism (such as adding strain fluctuation to an existing mass fluctuation) is there a benefit. In addition, both charge carriers and heat-carrying phonons are known to experience scattering due to alloying effects, leading to a trade-off in thermoelectric performance. We apply analytic transport models, based on perturbation and effective medium theories, to predict how alloy scattering will affect the thermal and electronic transport across the full compositional range of several pseudo-ternary and pseudo-quaternary alloy systems. To do so, we demonstrate a multicomponent extension to both thermal and electronic binary alloy scattering models based on the virtual crystal approximation. Finally, we show that common functional forms used in computational thermodynamics can be applied to this problem to further generalize the scattering behavior that is modeled.

We present a calculation of the radiative capture cross section $p(n,γ)d$ in the low-energy range, where the $M1$ reaction channel dominates. Employing the LENPIC nucleon-nucleon interaction up to the fifth order (N4LO) that is regularized by the semi-local coordinate space regulators, we obtain the initial and final state wave functions, and evaluate the phase shifts of the scattering state and deuteron properties. We derive the transition operator from the chiral effective field theory up to the next-to-next-to leading order (N2LO), where we also regularize the transition operator using regulators consistent with those of the interactions. We compute the capture cross sections and the results show a converging pattern with the chiral-order expansion of the nucleon-nucleon interaction, where the regulator dependence of the results is weak when higher-order nucleon-nucleon interactions are employed. We quantify the uncertainties of the cross-section results due to the chiral-order truncation. The chirally complete and consistent cross-section results are performed up to N2LO and they compare well with the experiments and other theoretical predictions.

We present an autonomous scanning droplet cell platform designed for on-demand alloy electrodeposition and real-time electrochemical characterization for investigating the corrosion-resistance properties of multicomponent alloys. Automation and machine learning are currently driving rapid innovation in high throughput and autonomous materials design and discovery. We present two alloy design case studies: one focusing on a multi-objective corrosion resistant alloy optimization, and a case study highlighting the complexity of the multimodal characterization needed to provide insight into the underlying structural and chemical factors that drive observed material behavior. This motivates a close coupling between autonomous research platforms and scientific machine learning methodology that blends mechanistic physical models and black box machine learning models. This emerging research area presents new opportunities to accelerate materials synthesis, evaluation, and hence discovery and design.

Lightweight models can easily be integrated into any handy IoT based gadgets/devices. This article presents our experiments on several state-of-the-art deep learning methods based on Lightweight Convolutional Neural Network architectures combining with transfer learning. ResNet152v2, MobileNet, and NASNetMobile were used as the base models with two different datasets containing Bangladeshi banknote images. The Bangla Currency dataset has 8000 Bangladeshi banknote images where the Bangla Money dataset consists of 1970 images. The performances of the models were measured using both the datasets and the combination of the two datasets. In order to achieve maximum efficiency, we used various augmentations, hyperparameter tuning, and optimizations techniques. We have achieved maximum test accuracy of 98.88\% on 8000 images dataset using MobileNet, 100\% on the 1970 images dataset using NASNetMobile, and 97.77\% on the combined dataset (9970 images) using MobileNet.

The exponential growths of social media and micro-blogging sites not only provide platforms for empowering freedom of expressions and individual voices, but also enables people to express anti-social behaviour like online harassment, cyberbullying, and hate speech. Numerous works have been proposed to utilize textual data for social and anti-social behaviour analysis, by predicting the contexts mostly for highly-resourced languages like English. However, some languages are under-resourced, e.g., South Asian languages like Bengali, that lack computational resources for accurate natural language processing (NLP). In this paper, we propose an explainable approach for hate speech detection from the under-resourced Bengali language, which we called DeepHateExplainer. Bengali texts are first comprehensively preprocessed, before classifying them into political, personal, geopolitical, and religious hates using a neural ensemble method of transformer-based neural architectures (i.e., monolingual Bangla BERT-base, multilingual BERT-cased/uncased, and XLM-RoBERTa). Important(most and least) terms are then identified using sensitivity analysis and layer-wise relevance propagation(LRP), before providing human-interpretable explanations. Finally, we compute comprehensiveness and sufficiency scores to measure the quality of explanations w.r.t faithfulness. Evaluations against machine learning~(linear and tree-based models) and neural networks (i.e., CNN, Bi-LSTM, and Conv-LSTM with word embeddings) baselines yield F1-scores of 78%, 91%, 89%, and 84%, for political, personal, geopolitical, and religious hates, respectively, outperforming both ML and DNN baselines.

Blockchain is one of the emerging technologies with the potential to disrupt many application domains. Cloud is an on-demand service paradigm facilitating the availability of shared resources for data storage and computation. In recent years, the integration of blockchain and cloud has received significant attention for ensuring efficiency, transparency, security and even for offering better cloud services in the form of novel service models. In order to exploit the full potential of blockchain-cloud integration, it is essential to have a clear understanding on the existing works within this domain. To facilitate this, there have been several survey papers, however, none of them covers the aspect of blockchain-cloud integration from a service-oriented perspective. This paper aims to fulfil this gap by providing a service oriented review of blockchain-cloud integration. Indeed, in this survey, we explore different service models into which blockchain has been integrated. For each service model, we review the existing works and present a comparative analysis so as to offer a clear and concise view in each category.

While much current web privacy research focuses on browser fingerprinting, the boring fact is that the majority of current third-party web tracking is conducted using traditional, persistent-state identifiers. One possible explanation for the privacy community's focus on fingerprinting is that to date browsers have faced a lose-lose dilemma when dealing with third-party stateful identifiers: block state in third-party frames and break a significant number of webpages, or allow state in third-party frames and enable pervasive tracking. The alternative, middle-ground solutions that have been deployed all trade privacy for compatibility, rely on manually curated lists, or depend on the user to manage state and state-access themselves. This work furthers privacy on the web by presenting a novel system for managing the lifetime of third-party storage, "page-length storage". We compare page-length storage to existing approaches for managing third-party state and find that page-length storage has the privacy protections of the most restrictive current option (i.e., blocking third-party storage) but web-compatibility properties mostly similar to the least restrictive option (i.e., allowing all third-party storage). This work further compares page-length storage to an alternative third-party storage partitioning scheme and finds that page-length storage provides superior privacy protections with comparable web-compatibility. We provide a dataset of the privacy and compatibility behaviors observed when applying the compared third-party storage strategies on a crawl of the Tranco 1k and the quantitative metrics used to demonstrate that page-length storage matches or surpasses existing approaches. Finally, we provide an open-source implementation of our page-length storage approach, implemented as patches against Chromium.

Active learning - the field of machine learning (ML) dedicated to optimal experiment design, has played a part in science as far back as the 18th century when Laplace used it to guide his discovery of celestial mechanics [1]. In this work we focus a closed-loop, active learning-driven autonomous system on another major challenge, the discovery of advanced materials against the exceedingly complex synthesis-processes-structure-property landscape. We demonstrate autonomous research methodology (i.e. autonomous hypothesis definition and evaluation) that can place complex, advanced materials in reach, allowing scientists to fail smarter, learn faster, and spend less resources in their studies, while simultaneously improving trust in scientific results and machine learning tools. Additionally, this robot science enables science-over-the-network, reducing the economic impact of scientists being physically separated from their labs. We used the real-time closed-loop, autonomous system for materials exploration and optimization (CAMEO) at the synchrotron beamline to accelerate the fundamentally interconnected tasks of rapid phase map** and property optimization, with each cycle taking seconds to minutes, resulting in the discovery of a novel epitaxial nanocomposite phase-change memory material.

Artificial intelligence (AI) products can be trained to recognize tuberculosis (TB)-related abnormalities on chest radiographs. Various AI products are available commercially, yet there is lack of evidence on how their performance compared with each other and with radiologists. We evaluated five AI software products for screening and triaging TB using a large dataset that had not been used to train any commercial AI products. Individuals (>=15 years old) presenting to three TB screening centers in Dhaka, Bangladesh, were recruited consecutively. All CXR were read independently by a group of three Bangladeshi registered radiologists and five commercial AI products: CAD4TB (v7), InferReadDR (v2), Lunit INSIGHT CXR (v4.9.0), JF CXR-1 (v2), and qXR (v3). All five AI products significantly outperformed the Bangladeshi radiologists. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve are qXR: 90.81% (95% CI:90.33-91.29%), CAD4TB: 90.34% (95% CI:89.81-90.87), Lunit INSIGHT CXR: 88.61% (95% CI:88.03%-89.20%), InferReadDR: 84.90% (95% CI: 84.27-85.54%) and JF CXR-1: 84.89% (95% CI:84.26-85.53%). Only qXR met the TPP with 74.3% specificity at 90% sensitivity. Five AI algorithms can reduce the number of Xpert tests required by 50%, while maintaining a sensitivity above 90%. All AI algorithms performed worse among the older age and people with prior TB history. AI products can be highly accurate and useful screening and triage tools for TB detection in high burden regions and outperform human readers.

Using this dual-modality approach, we are able to better classify the amorphous portion of the library, which we found to be the portion with a full-width-half-maximum (FWHM) of 0.42 A$^{-1}$ for the first sharp x-ray diffraction peak. We demonstrate that the FWHM and corrosion resistance are correlated but that, while chemistry still plays a role, a large FWHM is necessary for the best corrosion resistance.

In this paper, we design and deploy a synchronized multi-vantage point web measurement study to explore the comparability of web measurements across vantage points (VPs). We describe in reproducible detail the system with which we performed synchronized crawls on the Alexa top 5K domains from four distinct network VPs: research university, cloud datacenter, residential network, and Tor gateway proxy. Apart from the expected poor results from Tor, we observed no shocking disparities across VPs, but we did find significant impact from the residential VP's reliability and performance disadvantages. We also found subtle but distinct indicators that some third-party content consistently avoided crawls from our cloud VP. In summary, we infer that cloud VPs do fail to observe some content of interest to security and privacy researchers, who should consider augmenting cloud VPs with alternate VPs for cross-validation. Our results also imply that the added visibility provided by residential VPs over university VPs is marginal compared to the infrastructure complexity and network fragility they introduce.

Effective Hamiltonians and effective electroweak operators are calculated with the Okubo-Lee-Suzuki formalism for two-nucleon systems. Working within a harmonic oscillator basis, first without and then with a confining harmonic oscillator trap, we demonstrate the effects of renormalization on observables calculated for truncated basis spaces. We illustrate the renormalization effects for the root-mean-square point-proton radius, electric quadrupole moment, magnetic dipole moment, Gamow-Teller transition and neutrinoless double-beta decay operator using nucleon-nucleon interactions from chiral Effective Field Theory. Renormalization effects tend to be larger in the weaker traps and smaller basis spaces suggesting applications to heavier nuclei with transitions dominated by weakly-bound nucleons would be subject to more significant renormalization effects within achievable basis spaces.

Nuclear structure and reaction theory is undergoing a major renaissance with advances in many-body methods, strong interactions with greatly improved links to Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the advent of high performance computing, and improved computational algorithms. Predictive power, with well-quantified uncertainty, is emerging from non-perturbative approaches along with the potential for guiding experiments to new discoveries. We present an overview of some of our recent developments and discuss challenges that lie ahead. Our foci include: (1) strong interactions derived from chiral effective field theory; (2) advances in solving the large sparse matrix eigenvalue problem on leadership-class supercomputers; (3) selected observables in light nuclei with the JISP16 interaction; (4) effective electroweak operators consistent with the Hamiltonian; and, (5) discussion of A=48 system as an opportunity for the no-core approach with the reintroduction of the core.

We calculate the specific heat of a weakly interacting dilute system of bosons on a lattice and show that it is consistent with the measured electronic specific heat in the superconducting state of underdoped cuprates with boson concentration $ρ\sim x/2$, where $x$ is the hole (dopant) concentration. As usual, the $T^3$ term is due to Goldstone phonons. The zero-point energy, through its dependence on the condensate density $ρ_0(T)$, accounts for the anomalous $T$-linear term. These results support the split-pairing mechanism, in which spinons (pure spin) are paired at $T^*$ and holons (pure charge) form real-space pairs at $T_p < T^*$, creating a gauge-coupled physical pair of charge $+2e$ and concentration $x/2$ which Bose condenses below $T_c$, accounting for the observed phases.

Metal oxides such as VO$_2$ undergo structural transitions to low-symmetry phases characterized by intricate crystalline order, accompanied by rich electronic behavior. We derive a minimal ionic Hamiltonian based on symmetry and local energetics which describes structural transitions involving all four observed phases, in the correct order. An exact analysis shows that complexity results from the symmetry-induced constraints of the parent phase which forces ionic displacements to form multiple interpenetrating groups using low-dimensional pathways and distant neighbors. Displacements within each group exhibit independent, quasi two-dimensional order, which is frustrated and fragile. This selective ordering mechanism is not restricted to VO$_2$: it applies to other oxides which show similar complex order.

After deducing the density profiles and gravitational potential functions of eight galaxies from the rotation velocity data from THINGS, we find that the density decreases exponentially with the potential in substantial regions of the haloes. Such behavior is in agreement with that of a single-component isothermal Boltzmann gas, and suggests that an effective description in terms of a Boltzmann gas is possible for dark matter in these regions. This could be an indication that dark matter self-interactions are sufficient in strength and number to lead to thermal equilibrium in these regions. We write down the dynamics and boundary conditions for a Boltzmann gas description and examine some of its qualitative and quantitative consequences. Solutions to the dynamical system are determined by three dimensionfull parameters, and provide reasonable fits to the rotational velocity data in the regions where the Boltzmann-like behavior was found. Unlike in the usual approach to curve fitting, we do not assume a specific form for the dark matter density profile and we do not require a detailed knowledge of the baryonic content of the galaxy.

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has recently been applied in wireless communication systems due to its high data rate transmission capability with high bandwidth efficiency and its robustness to multi-path delay. Fading is the one of the major aspect which is considered in the receiver. To cancel the effect of fading, channel estimation and equalization procedure must be done at the receiver before data demodulation. This paper mainly deals with pilot based channel estimation techniques for OFDM communication over frequency selective fading channels. This paper proposes a specific approach to channel equalization for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex (OFDM) systems. Inserting an equalizer realized as an adaptive system before the FFT processing, the influence of variable delay and multi path could be mitigated in order to remove or reduce considerably the guard interval and to gain some spectral efficiency. The adaptive algorithm is based on adaptive filtering with averaging (AFA) for parameter update. Based on the development of a model of the OFDM system, through extensive computer simulations, we investigate the performance of the channel equalized system. The results show much higher convergence and adaptation rate compared to one of the most frequently used algorithms - Least Mean Squares (LMS).

The observation of flat rotation curves in asymptotic region of galaxies implies that the dark matter density profile decreases exponentially with the gravitational potential in this region. It is curious that this behavior is identical to what one would have from a Boltzmann gas in thermal equilibrium. This suggests that an {\it effective} Boltzmann gas description of dark matter is possible for the halo, which follows even though no requirement of thermal equilibrium is assumed for the dark matter particles. We examine some qualitative and quantitative consequences of such an effective description. This is done by studying a simple model that takes into account gravitational self-interactions of dark matter and its gravitational interactions with the baryonic core.
Solutions to the dynamics are determined by two parameters, one of which is the ratio of the dark matter mass to the effective temperature of the gas. Crude estimates can be made for these parameters based on observations.

Recently, we have solved the long-standing problem of connecting the physics of the Mott insulator to the underdoped regime of the t-J model [PRB 82, 014504, 2010]. We have derived a renormalized Hamiltonian valid for small do** (x) which is characterized by a spin gap, and sublattice preserving hop** by a hole, and by a pair of holes, both accompanied by a spin-singlet backflow. The phase diagram obtained by continuing the spin states from half filling reproduces the phases of the cuprates. Remarkably, confinement of metallic conduction to 2d emerges from the theory (i.e., it is not assumed). Here we show that the Hamiltonian naturally leads to a pairing mechanism in which the pair has a dual character. Its spin part is a spinon singlet which (2d) condenses below T*. The charge part is a real-space holon pair formed at Tp < T*, which undergoes a (3d) Bose-Einstein condensation at Tc < Tp. While neither is observable separately, the combination is, as a well-defined excitation of momentum q, and energy w(q). The mechanism is consistent with the small superfluid density, the decline of Tc at small do**, and the existence of pairs above Tc in cuprates, as indicated by the observation of diamagnetism and Nernst effect.

We have been able to resolve two long-standing issues that are central to the theory of high Tc superconductivity: (1) How is the physics of the doped region connected to that of the Mott insulator? (2) What is the origin of the two-dimensionality of the normal state? Specifically, based on the t-J model, we derive a renormalized Hamiltonian to describe the properties of underdoped cuprates. The theory is constrained to agree with the behavior at half filling, which is well described by the bosonic RVB state of Arovas and Auerbach. Moving holes are assumed to destroy long-range magnetic order, which leads to a gap in the spinon spectrum. The presence of the spin gap allows us to derive a constrained Hamiltonian which describes sublattice-preserving hop** by renormalized holons and holon pairs, accompanied by spinon singlet backflows. Below the singlet condensation, i.e, the psudogap (as distinct from the spin gap), temperature T*, holons form a spinless Fermi liquid without an observable small Fermi surface. Above T* holons are localized, giving rise to a (gauge) insulator, which we identify with the strange metal phase. Holon pair hop** leads to a robust d-wave superconductor, its symmetry determined primarily by the symmetry of the RVB state at half filling. The predictions of the theory are shown to be consistent with the results of nmr, tunneling and transport experiments. Remarkably, the existence of the spin gap provides a natural explanation for the two-dimensionality of the normal state. The marked asymmetry between hole-doped and electron-doped cuprates is also easily explained.

The Pauli Exclusion principle plays an essential role in the structure of the current universe. However, in an exactly supersymmetric (susy) universe, the degeneracy of bosons and fermions plus the ability of fermions to convert in pairs to bosons implies that the effects of the Pauli principle would be largely absent. Such a universe may eventually occur through vacuum decay from our current positive vacuum energy universe to the zero vacuum energy universe of exact susy. It has been shown that in such a susy universe ionic molecular binding does exist but homonuclear diatomic molecules are left unbound. In this paper we provide a first look at covalent binding in a susy background and compare the properties of the homonuclear bound states with those of the corresponding molecules in our universe. We find that covalent binding of diatomic molecules is very strong in an exact susy universe and the interatomic distances are in general much smaller than in the broken susy universe.

We analyze the t-J model on a square lattice using bosonic spinons and fermionic holons for low density x of holes. Spinons are paired into singlets, which condense below a temperature T*. The condensate evolves out of the Mott phase - preserving its symmetry. For T > T* holons and spinons are confined (by gauge forces), so that there is no coherent charge propagation. Metallic conduction and d-wave superconductivity result from separate, sublattice-preserving, holon hop** processes which originate below T* from a coupling with the condensate. A simple effective Hamiltonian describing these processes is derived and solved. Holons form a charge Fermi liquid, becoming incoherent (confined) above T*. In the superconductor holons hop as pairs, reducing kinetic energy. The two-sublattice property is the glue that connects the three phases; its effect can be seen in various correlation functions. The theory can account for many features of the cuprate superconductors, including the origin of two-dimensional metallicity.
