Abstract:
In this paper we consider a dynamic model of fracture for viscoelastic materials, in which the constitutive relation, involving the Cauchy stress and the strain tensors, is given in an implicit nonlinear form. We prove the existence of a solution to the associated viscoelastic dynamic system on a prescribed time-dependent cracked domain via a discretisation-in-time argument. Moreover, we show that…

Moreover, we show that such a solution satisfies an energy-dissipation balance in which the energy used to increase the crack does not appear. As a consequence, in analogy to the linear case this nonlinear model exhibits the so-called viscoelastic paradox.

The morphology of crystalline thin films evolving on flat rigid substrates by condensation of extra film atoms or by evaporation of their own atoms in the surrounding vapor is studied in the framework of the theory of Stress Driven Rearrangement Instabilities (SDRI). By following the SDRI literature both the elastic contributions due to the mismatch between the film and the substrate lattices at their theoretical (free-standing) elastic equilibrium, and a curvature perturbative regularization preventing the problem to be ill-posed due to the otherwise exhibited backward parabolicity, are added in the evolution equation. The resulting Cauchy problem under investigation consists in an anisotropic mean-curvature type flow of the fourth order on the film profiles, which are assumed to be parametrizable as graphs of functions measuring the film thicknesses, coupled with a quasistatic elastic problem in the film bulks. Periodic boundary conditions are considered. The results are twofold: the existence of a regular solution for a finite period of time and the stability for all times, of both Lyapunov and asymptotic type, of any configuration given by a flat film profile and the related elastic equilibrium. Such achievements represent both the generalization to three dimensions of a previous result in two dimensions for a similar Cauchy problem, and the complement of the analysis previously carried out in the literature for the symmetric situation in which the film evolution is not influenced by the evaporation-condensation process here considered, but it is entirely due to the volume preserving surface-diffusion process, which is instead here neglected. The method is based on minimizing movements, which allow to exploit the the gradient-flow structure of the evolution equation.

Abstract:
Galaxy clusters are biased tracers of the underlying matter density field. At very large radii beyond about 10 Mpc/\textit{h}, the shear profile shows evidence of a second-halo term. This is related to the correlated matter distribution around galaxy clusters and proportional to the so-called halo bias. We present an observational analysis of the halo bias-mass relation based on the AMICO galaxy cluster catalog, comprising around 7000 candidates detected in the third release of the KiDS survey. We split the cluster sample into 14 redshift-richness bins and derive the halo bias and the virial mass in each bin by means of a stacked weak lensing analysis. The observed halo bias-mass relation and the theoretical predictions based on the $Λ$CDM standard cosmological model show an agreement within $2σ$. The mean measurements of bias and mass over the full catalog give $M_{200c} = (4.9 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{13} M_{\odot}/\textit{h}$ and $b_h σ_8^2 = 1.2 \pm 0.1$. With the additional prior of a bias-mass relation from numerical simulations, we constrain the normalization of the power spectrum with a fixed matter density $Ω_m = 0.3$, finding $σ_8 = 0.63 \pm 0.10$.

Abstract:
We study the behaviour of the solutions to a dynamic evolution problem for a viscoelastic model with long memory, when the rate of change of the data tends to zero. We prove that a suitably rescaled version of the solutions converges to the solution of the corresponding stationary problem.
