The design and optimization of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) are key challenges for future wireless communication systems. RISs are devices that can manipulate electromagnetic (EM) waves in a programmable way, thus enhancing the performance and efficiency of wireless links. To achieve this goal, it is essential to have reliable EM models that can capture the behavior of RISs in different scenarios. This work demonstrates that the Partial Elements Equivalent Circuit (PEEC) method is a powerful tool for EM analysis of RIS-aided wireless links. It might also be integrated with optimization algorithms in order to optimize wireless communication networks.

To this aim, the availability of accurate electromagnetic (EM) models is of paramount important for the design of RIS-assisted communication links. In this work, we validate a widely-used analytical multiport network for RISs by means of a well-established full-wave numerical method based on the Partial Elements Equivalent Circuit (PEEC) approach. Numerical results show good agreement between the two methods, thus demonstrating i) the considered multiport network model being effective and ii) the PEEC method being appropriate for EM modeling of RIS-assisted wireless links.

We present a comparison between various algorithms of inference of covariance and precision matrices in small datasets of real vectors, of the typical length and dimension of human brain activity time series retrieved by functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). Assuming a Gaussian model underlying the neural activity, the problem consists in denoising the empirically observed matrices in order to obtain a better estimator of the true precision and covariance matrices. We consider several standard noise-cleaning algorithms and compare them on two types of datasets. The first type are time series of fMRI brain activity of human subjects at rest. The second type are synthetic time series sampled from a generative Gaussian model of which we can vary the fraction of dimensions per sample q = N/T and the strength of off-diagonal correlations. The reliability of each algorithm is assessed in terms of test-set likelihood and, in the case of synthetic data, of the distance from the true precision matrix. We observe that the so called Optimal Rotationally Invariant Estimator, based on Random Matrix Theory, leads to a significantly lower distance from the true precision matrix in synthetic data, and higher test likelihood in natural fMRI data. We propose a variant of the Optimal Rotationally Invariant Estimator in which one of its parameters is optimised by cross-validation. In the severe undersampling regime (large q) typical of fMRI series, it outperforms all the other estimators. We furthermore propose a simple algorithm based on an iterative likelihood gradient ascent, providing an accurate estimation for weakly correlated datasets.

Complex networks usually exhibit a rich architecture organized over multiple intertwined scales. Information pathways are expected to pervade these scales reflecting structural insights that are not manifest from analyses of the network topology. Moreover, small-world effects correlate with the different network hierarchies complicating the identification of coexisting mesoscopic structures and functional cores. We present a communicability analysis of effective information pathways throughout complex networks based on information diffusion to shed further light on these issues. We employ a variety of brand-new theoretical techniques allowing for: (i) bring the theoretical framework to quantify the probability of information diffusion among nodes, (ii) identify critical scales and structures of complex networks regardless of their intrinsic properties, and (iii) demonstrate their dynamical relevance in synchronization phenomena. By combining these ideas, we evidence how the information flow on complex networks unravels different resolution scales. Using computational techniques, we focus on entropic transitions, uncovering a generic mesoscale object, the information core, and controlling information processing in complex networks. Altogether, this study sheds much light on allowing new theoretical techniques paving the way to introduce future renormalization group approaches based on diffusion distances.

We present a sample implementation of a Virtual and Augmented Reality immersive environment based on Free and Libre Open Source Hardware and Software and the HTC Vive system, used to enhance the immersive experience of the user and to track her/his movements. The sense of immersion has increased and stimulated using a footplate and a Tibetan bridge, connected to the virtual world as Augmented Reality applications and implemented through an Arduino board, thereby adopting a low cost, open source hardware and software approach. The proposed architecture is relatively affordable from the cost point of view, easy to implement, configure and adapt to different contexts. It can be of great help for organizing laboratory classes for young students to afford the implementation of virtual worlds and Augmented Reality applications.

Millimeter wave (mmWave) communications systems are promising candidate to support extremely high data rate services in future wireless networks. MmWave communications exhibit high penetration loss (blockage) and require directional transmissions to compensate for severe channel attenuations and for high noise powers. When blockage occurs, there are at least two simple prominent options: 1) switching to the conventional microwave frequencies (fallback option) and 2) using an alternative non-blocked path (relay option). However, currently it is not clear under which conditions and network parameters one option is better than the other. To investigate the performance of the two options, this paper proposes a novel blockage model that allows deriving maximum achievable throughput and delay performance of both options. A simple criterion to decide which option should be taken under which network condition is provided. By a comprehensive performance analysis, it is shown that the right option depends on the payload size, beam training overhead, and blockage probability. For a network with light traffic and low probability of blockage in the direct link, the fallback option is throughput- and delay-optimal. For a network with heavy traffic demands and semi-static topology (low beam-training overhead), the relay option is preferable.

We study the generalization of the dispersionless Kadomtsev - Petviashvili (dKP) equation in n+1 dimensions and with nonlinearity of degree m+1, a model equation describing the propagation of weakly nonlinear, quasi one dimensional waves in the absence of dispersion and dissipation, and arising in several physical contexts, like acoustics, plasma physics, hydrodynamics and nonlinear optics. In 2+1 dimensions and with quadratic nonlinearity, this equation is integrable through a novel IST, and it has been recently shown to be a prototype model equation in the description of the two dimensional wave breaking of localized initial data. In higher dimensions and with higher nonlinearity, the generalized dKP equations are not integrable, but their invariance under motions on the paraboloid allows one to construct in this paper a family of exact solutions describing waves constant on their paraboloidal wave front and breaking simultaneously in all points of it, develo** after breaking either multivaluedness or single valued discontinuous shocks. Then such exact solutions are used to build the longtime behavior of the solutions of the Cauchy problem, for small and localized initial data, showing that wave breaking of small initial data takes place in the longtime regime if and only if $m(n-1)\le 2$. At last, the analytic aspects of such a wave breaking are investigated in detail in terms of the small initial data, in both cases in which the solution becomes multivalued after breaking or it develops a discontinuous shock. These results, contained in the 2012 master thesis of one of the authors (FS), generalize those obtained by one of the authors (PMS) and S.V.Manakov for the dKP equation in n+1 dimensions with quadratic nonlinearity, and are obtained following the same strategy.

Efficient handover algorithms are essential for highly performing mobile wireless communications. These algorithms depend on numerous parameters, whose settings must be appropriately optimized to offer a seamless connectivity. Nevertheless, such an optimization is difficult in a time varying context, unless adaptive strategies are used. In this paper, a new approach for the handover optimization is proposed. First, a new modeling of the handover process by a hybrid system that takes as input the handover parameters is established. Then, this hybrid system is used to pose some dynamical optimization approaches where the probability of outage and the probability of handover are considered. Since it is shown that these probabilities are difficult to compute, simple approximations of adequate accuracy are developed. Based on these approximations, a new approach to the solution of the handover optimizations is proposed by the use of a trellis diagram. A distributed optimization algorithm is then developed to maximize handover performance. From an extensive set of results obtained by numerical computations and simulations, it is shown that the proposed algorithm allows to improve performance of the handover considerably when compared to more traditional approaches.

Although the performance of the medium access control (MAC) of the IEEE 802.15.4 has been investigated under the assumption of ideal wireless channel, the understanding of the cross-layer dynamics between MAC and physical layer is an open problem when the wireless channel exhibits path loss, multi-path fading, and shadowing. The analysis of MAC and wireless channel interaction is essential for consistent performance prediction, correct design and optimization of the protocols. In this paper, a novel approach to analytical modeling of these interactions is proposed. The analysis considers simultaneously a composite channel fading, interference generated by multiple terminals, the effects induced by hidden terminals, and the MAC reduced carrier sensing capabilities. Depending on the MAC parameters and physical layer thresholds, it is shown that the MAC performance indicators over fading channels can be far from those derived under ideal channel assumptions. As novel results, we show to what extent the presence of fading may be beneficial for the overall network performance by reducing the multiple access interference, and how this can be used to drive joint selection of MAC and physical layer parameters.
