Abstract:
This study introduces a low-complexity behavioural model to describe the dynamic response of railway turnouts due to the ballast and railpad components. The behavioural model should serve as the basis for the future development of a supervisory system for the continuous monitoring of turnouts. This study introduces a low-complexity behavioural model to describe the dynamic response of railway turnouts due to the ballast and railpad components. The behavioural model should serve as the basis for the future development of a supervisory system for the continuous monitoring of turnouts. A fourth order linear model is proposed based on spectral analysis of measured rail vertical accelerations gathered during a receptance test and it is then identified at several sections of the turnout applying the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm. The predictviness and robustness of the behavioural models have been assessed on a large data set of train passages differing for train type, speed and loading condition. Last, the need for a novel modeling method is argued in relation to high-fidelity mechanistic models widely used in the railway engineering community.

The theoretical approach to describe the defocusing microscopy technique by U. Agero et al. [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 67}, 051904 (2003)] assumes that the size of the objective lens aperture is infinite. This treatment gives that the intensity at the image plane depends on the laplacian of the phase introduced in the field by a pure phase object. In the present paper, we consider an arbitrary size for the aperture of the objective lens and we conclude that the intensity at the image plane depends also on the gradient of the phase introduced by the object and the phase itself. In this case, even an object that introduces only linear variations in the phase can be detected. Furthermore, we show that the contrast of the image of the phase object increases with the use of smaller objective apertures.

Control of spatial quantum correlations in bi-photons is one of the fundamental principles of Quantum Imaging. Up to now, experiments have been restricted to controlling the state of a single bi-photon, by using linear optical elements. In this work we demonstrate experimental control of quantum correlations in a four-photon state comprised of two pairs of photons. Our scheme is based on a high-efficiency parametric downconversion source coupled to a double slit by a variable linear optical setup, in order to obtain spatially encoded qubits. Both entangled and separable pairs have been obtained, by altering experimental parameters. We show how the correlations influence both the interference and diffraction on the double slit.

We study the dynamics of one electron wave packet in a chain with a non-adiabatic electron-phonon interaction. The electron-phonon coupling is taken into account in the time-dependent Schrödinger equation by a delayed cubic nonlinearity. In the limit of an adiabatic coupling, the self-trap** phenomenon occurs when the nonlinearity parameter exceeds a critical value of the order of the band width. We show that a weaker nonlinearity is required to produce self-trap** in the regime of short delay times. However, this trend is reversed for slow nonlinear responses, resulting in a reentrant phase-diagram. In slowly responding media, self-trap** only takes place for very strong nonlinearities.

We show the propagation of entangled states of high-dimensional quantum systems. The qudits states were generated using the transverse correlation of the twin photons produced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Their free-space distribution was performed at the laboratory scale and the propagated states maintained a high-fidelity with their original form. The use of entangled qudits allow an increase in the quantity of information that can be transmitted and may also guarantee more privacy for communicating parties. Therefore, studies about propagating entangled states of qudits are important for the effort of building quantum communication networks.
