We present measurements of the total projectile-electron-loss cross sections in O$^-$ + N$_2$ collisions in the energy range from 2.5 to 8.5 keV. Two different techniques, beam attenuation and the growth rate, are employed. The difference between the values obtained with the two methods is explained under the hypothesis of a contribution from anionic metastable auto-detaching states. Under this hypothesis, the long-standing question of a strong disagreement among reported measurements at the low-energy range is also explained. The cross sections measured using the growth-rate method show a threshold behavior. We analyze the cross-section velocity dependence in the framework of a collision between a quasi-free electron, loosely bound to the projectile, and the molecular target. Within the free collision model, we deduce and test a simple analytical expression for the expected velocity threshold taking into account the angular distribution of electron velocities within the anion.

Relative cross sections for the valence shell photoionisation (PI) of $\rm ^2S$ ground level and $\rm ^2D$ metastable Ca$^{+}$ ions were measured with high energy resolution by using the ion-photon merged-beams technique at the Advanced Light Source. Overview measurements were performed with a full width at half maximum bandpass of $ΔE =17$~meV, covering the energy range 20~eV -- 56~eV. Details of the PI spectrum were investigated at energy resolutions reaching the level of $ΔE=3.3$~meV. The photon energy scale was calibrated with an uncertainty of $\pm5$~meV. By comparison with previous absolute measurements %by Kjeldsen et al in the energy range 28~eV -- 30.5~eV and by Lyon et al in the energy range 28~eV -- 43~eV the present experimental high-resolution data were normalised to an absolute cross-section scale and the fraction of metastable Ca$^{+}$ ions that were present in the parent ion beam was determined to be 18$\pm$4\%. Large-scale R-matrix calculations using the Dirac Coulomb approximation and employing 594 levels in the close-coupling expansion were performed for the Ca$^{+}(3s^23p^64s~^2\textrm{S}_{1/2})$ and Ca$^{+}(3s^2 3p^6 3d~^2\textrm{D}_{3/2,5/2})$ levels. The experimental data are compared with the results of these calculations and previous theoretical and experimental studies.

We followed the evolution of the normal and superconducting properties of Al thin films after each session of various successive oxygen irradiations at ambient temperature. Such irradiated films, similar to the granular ones, exhibit enhanced superconductivity, Kondo behavior and negative-curvature resistivity. Two distinct roles of oxygen are identified: as a damage-causing projectile and as an implanted oxidizing agent. The former gives rise to the processes involved in the conventional recovery stages. The latter, considered within the context of the Cabrera-Mott model, gives rise to a multistep process which involves charges transfer and creation of stabilized vacancies and charged defects. Based on the outcome of this multistep process, we consider (i) the negative curvature resistivity as a manifestation of a thermally-assisted liberation of trapped electric charges, (ii) the Kondo contribution as a spin-flip scattering from paramagnetic, color-center-type defects, and (iii) the enhancement of T_{c} as being due to a lattice softening facilitated by the stabilized defects and vacancies. The similarity in the phase diagrams of granular and irradiated films as well as the aging effects are discussed along the same line of reasoning.

Innershell ionization of a $1s$ electron by either photons or electrons is important for X-ray photoionized objects such as active galactic nuclei and electron-ionized sources such as supernova remnants. Modeling and interpreting observations of such objects requires accurate predictions for the charge state distribution (CSD) which results as the $1s$-hole system stabilizes. Due to the complexity of the complete stabilization process, few modern calculations exist and the community currently relies on 40-year-old atomic data. Here, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study for innershell photoionization of neutral atomic nitrogen for photon energies of $403-475$~eV. Results are reported for the total ion yield cross section, for the branching ratios for formation of N$^+$, N$^{2+}$, and N$^{3+}$, and for the average charge state. We find significant differences when comparing to the data currently available to the astrophysics community. For example, while the branching ratio to N$^{2+}$ is somewhat reduced, that for N$^+$ is greatly increased, and that to N$^{3+}$, which was predicted not to be zero, grows to $\approx 10\%$ at the higher photon energies studied. This work demonstrates some of the shortcomings in the theoretical CSD data base for innershell ionization and points the way for the improvements needed to more reliably model the role of innershell ionization of cosmic plasmas.

Observed resonance lineshapes indicate interference between indirect and direct photoionization channels. Resonance features are spectroscopically assigned and their energies and quantum defects are tabulated. The measurements are satisfactorily reproduced by theoretical calculations based on an intermediate coupling semi-relativistic Breit-Pauli approximation.

We study the controlled introduction of defects in GaMnAs by irradiating the samples with energetic ion beams, which modify the magnetic properties of the DMS. Our study focuses on the low-carrier-density regime, starting with as-grown GaMnAs films and decreasing even further the number of carriers, through a sequence of irradiation doses. We did a systematic study of magnetization as a function of temperature and of the irradiation ion dose. We also performed in-situ room temperature resistivity measurements as a function of the ion dose. We observe that both magnetic and transport properties of the samples can be experimentally manipulated by controlling the ion-beam parameters. For highly irradiated samples, the magnetic measurements indicate the formation of magnetic clusters together with a transition to an insulating state. The experimental data are compared with mean-field calculations for magnetization. The independent control of disorder and carrier density in the calculations allows further insight on the individual role of this two factors in the ion-beam-induced modification of GaMnAs.

In order to simulate the effects of energetic charged particles present in the solar wind colliding with the cometary gaseous formic acid molecule (HCOOH), laboratory experiments have been performed. The absolute ionisation and dissociation cross sections for this molecule interacting with solar wind particles were measured employing fast electrons in the energy range of 0.5 to 2 keV and energetic protons with energies varying from 0.128 to 2 MeV. Despite the fact that both projectiles lead to a very similar fragmentation pattern, differences in the relative intensities of the fragments were observed. Formic acid survives about 4-5 times more to the proton beam than to the energetic electron collision. The minimum momentum transfer in the electron impact case was estimated to be 3-38% larger than the minimum momentum transfer observed with the equivelocity protons. The UV photodissociation rates and half-lives for HCOOH are roughly closer to the values obtained with energetic electrons. It is consequently important to take electron impact data into account when develo** chemical models to simulate the interplanetary conditions.
