We study the excited states of zero seniority for various like-particle systems interacting by pairing forces and by general two-body interactions. We consider two types of excitations, generated from a ground state described by a pair condensate. One type is obtained by breaking a pair from the ground state condensate and replacing it by "excited" collective pairs built on time-reversed single-particle orbits. The second type of zero seniority excited states is described by a condensate of identical excited pairs. The structure of these excited states is analysed for the picked fence model and for the valence neutrons of $^{108}$Sn. For a state-depending pairing interaction, the first type of excited states agree well with the J=0 states which are known in $^{108}$Sn. At the same time, these states can be also associated unambiguously with those exact states which are the closest in energy to the experimental levels. The states corresponding to the excited pair condensate appear at low energies, around the energy of the second excited state of the first type, and they do not have a simple correspondence with exact eigenstates. However, at a much higher excitation energy there is an exact state which is similar in structure to an EPC state. It is shown that this EPC state has the features of a giant pairing vibration.

The band structure of N=Z nuclei is constructed from intrinsic states defined in terms of quartets. The simplest of these states is a condensate of collective quartets with isospin T=0. The other intrinsic states are built by promoting one quartet of the condensate to an excited T=0 configuration. From these intrinsic states, by angular momentum projection, band structures are generated that approximate well the experimental ones. The projected states also reproduce to a very good extent the spectra resulting from configuration interaction calculations based on the same quartets forming the intrinsic states. These results show that the quartet-based intrinsic states provide the appropriate framework to understand in a simple and intuitive manner the emergence of band-like structures in N=Z nuclei.

Energy spectra are generated via configuration-iteraction calculations in the spaces built with these quartets. The approach has been applied to $^{24}$Mg and $^{28}$Si in the $sd$ shell and to $^{48}$Cr in the $pf$ shell. In all cases a good description of the low-lying spectra has been achieved. As a peculiarity of the approach, a close correspondence is observed between the various sets of quartets employed and the occurrence of well defined band-like structures in the spectra of the systems under study.

We analyse the contribution of isovector and isoscalar proton-neutron pairing to the binding energies of even-even nuclei with $N-Z=0,2,4$ and atomic mass $20 < A <100$. The binding energies are calculated in the mean-field approach by coupling a Skyrme-type functional to an isovector-isoscalar pairing force of zero range. The latter is treated in the framework of quartet condensation model (QCM), which conserves exactly the particle number and the isospin. The interdependence of pairing and deformation is taken into account by performing self-consistent Skyrme-HF+QCM calculations in the intrinsic system. It is shown that the binding energies are not changing much when the isoscalar pairing is switched on. This fact is related to the off-diagonal matrix elements of the pairing force, which is less attractive for the isoscalar force, and to the competition between the isoscalar and isovector pairing channels.

The phenomenon of quartet condensation in the ground state of an isovector pairing Hamiltonian for an even-even $N=Z$ system is investigated. For this purpose we follow the evolution of the ground state from an unperturbed regime up to a strongly interacting one in a formalism of collective pairs. These pairs are those resulting from the diagonalization of the pairing Hamiltonian in a space of two particles coupled to isospin $T=1$. The ground state is found to rapidly evolve from a product of distinct $T=0$ quartets, each one formed by two of the above pairs, to a condensate of identical quartets built only with the pair corresponding to the lowest energy. This finding establishes a link between the complicated structure of the exact ground state and the simple approximation scheme of the Quartet Condensation Model. The mechanism at the basis of this quartet condensation turns out to be the same which is responsible for the development of a pair condensate in the ground state of a like-particle pairing Hamiltonian.

We derive the exact $T=0$ seniority-zero eigenstates of the isovector pairing Hamiltonian for an even number of protons and neutrons. Nucleons are supposed to be distributed over a set of non-degenerate levels and to interact through a pairing force with constant strength. We show that these eigenstates (and among them, in particular, the ground state) are linear superpositions of products of $T=1$ collective pairs arranged into $T=0$ quartets. This grou** of protons and neutrons first into $T=1$ collective pairs and then into $T=0$ quartets represents the distinctive feature of these eigenstates. This work highlights, for the first time on the grounds of the analytic expression of its eigenstates, the key role played by the isovector pairing force in the phenomenon of nuclear quarteting.

The quantum phases of superconductivity and superfluidity are characterised mathematically by the Yang concept of Off-Diagonal Long Range Order (ODLRO), related to the existence of a large eigenvalue of the density matrix. We analyse how the Yang criterion applies for various Hamiltonians commonly employed to describe superfluid-type correlations in atomic nuclei. For like-particle pairing Hamiltonians the behaviour of the largest eigenvalue of two-body density matrix shows a clear evidence for a transition between a normal to a paired phase. However, this is not the case for the isoscalar proton-neutron pairing interactions acting in self-conjugate nuclei.

The ground state band and two low-lying side bands, a $β$ and a $γ$ band, together with all known $E2$ transitions and quadrupole moments associated with these states are well reproduced by the model. An analysis of the potential energy surface places $^{28}$Si, only known case so far, at the critical point of the U(5)-$\overline{\rm SU(3)}$ transition of the IBM structural diagram.

We propose a particle number conserving formalism for the treatment of isovector-isoscalar pairing in nuclei with $N>Z$. The ground state of the pairing Hamiltonian is described by a quartet condensate to which is appended a pair condensate formed by the neutrons in excess. The quartets are built by two isovector pairs coupled to the total isospin $T=0$ and two collective isoscalar proton-neutron pairs. To probe this ansatz for the ground state we performed calculations for $N>Z$ nuclei with the valence nucleons moving above the cores $^{16}$O, $^{40}$Ca and $^{100}$Sn. The calculations are done with two pairing interactions, one state-independent and the other of zero range, which are supposed to scatter pairs in time-revered orbits. It is proven that the ground state correlation energies calculated within this approach are very close to the exact results provided by the diagonalization of the pairing Hamiltonian. Based on this formalism we have shown that moving away of N=Z line, both the isoscalar and the isovector proton-neutron pairing correlations remain significant and that they cannot be treated accurately by models based on a proton-neutron pair condensate.

The calculations are performed both with Relativistic-Hatree-Bogoliubov (RHB) and RMF+Projected-BCS (PBCS) models and taking as examples the nuclei $^{66}$Ni, $^{124}$Sn and $^{200}$Pb. It is shown that the coherence length have the same pattern as in previous non-relativistic HFB calculations, i.e., it is maximum in the interior of the nucleus and drops to a minimum in the surface region. In the framework of RMF+PBCS we have also analysed, for the particular case of $^{120}$Sn, the dependence of the coherence length on the intensity of the pairing force. This analysis indicates that pairing is reducing the coherence length by about 25-30 $\%$ compared to the RMF limit.

In the extended QCM approach the lowest states of isospin T=1 and T=0 in odd-odd nuclei are described variationally by trial functions composed by a proton-neutron pair appended to a condensate of 4-body operators. The latter are taken as a linear superposition of an isovector quartet, built by two isovector pairs coupled to the total isospin T=0, and two collective isoscalar pairs. In all pairs the nucleons are distributed in time-reversed single-particle states of axial symmetry. The accuracy of the trial functions is tested for realistic pairing Hamiltonians and odd-odd N=Z nuclei with the valence nucleons moving above the cores $^{16}$O, $^{40}$Ca and $^{100}$Sn. One model approximates the nuclear states as a condensate of identical quartets with angular momentum $J=0$ and isospin $T=0$ while the other let these quartets to be all different from each other. With these models we investigate the role of alpha-like quartet correlations both in the ground state and in the lowest $J=0$, $T=0$ excited states of even-even $N=Z$ nuclei in the $sd$-shell. We show that the ground state correlations of these nuclei can be described to a good extent in terms of a condensate of alpha-like quartets. This turns out to be especially the case for the nucleus $^{32}$S for which the overlap between this condensate and the shell model wave function is found close to one. In the same nucleus, a similar overlap is found also in the case of the first excited $0^+$ state. No clear correspondence is observed instead between the second excited states of the quartet models and the shell model eigenstates in all the cases examined.

The isoscalar proton-neutron pairing and isovector pairing, including both isovector proton-neutron pairing and like-particle pairing, are treated in a formalism which conserves exactly the particle number and the isospin. The formalism is designed for self-conjugate (N=Z) systems of nucleons moving in axially deformed mean fields and interacting through the most general isovector and isoscalar pairing interactions. The ground state of these systems is described by a superposition of two types of condensates, i.e., condensates of isovector quartets, built by two isovector pairs coupled to the total isospin T=0, and condensates of isoscalar proton-neutron pairs. The comparison with the exact solutions of realistic isovector-isoscalar pairing Hamiltonians shows that this ansatz for the ground state is able to describe with high precision the pairing correlation energies. It is also shown that, at variance with the majority of Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations, in the present formalism the isovector and isoscalar pairing correlations coexist for any pairing interactions. The competition between the isovector and isoscalar proton-neutron pairing correlations is studied for N=Z nuclei with the valence nucleons moving in the $sd$ and $pf$ shells and in the major shell above $^{100}$Sn. We find that in these nuclei the isovector pairing prevail over the isoscalar pairing, especially for heavier nuclei. However, the isoscalar proton-neutron correlations are significant in all nuclei and they always coexist with the isovector pairing correlations.

We analyze the role of maximally aligned isoscalar pairs in heavy $N=Z$ nuclei by employing a formalism of quartets. Quartets are superpositions of two neutrons and two protons coupled to total isospin $T=0$ and given $J$. The study is focused on the contribution of spin-aligned pairs carrying the angular momentum $J=9$ to the structure of $^{96}$Cd and $^{92}$Pd. We show that the role played by the $J=9$ pairs is quite sensitive to the model space and, in particular, it decreases considerably by passing from the simple $0g_{9/2}$ space to the more complete $1p_{1/2}$,$1p_{3/2}$,$0f_{5/2}$,$0g_{9/2}$ space. In the latter case the description of these nuclei in terms of only spin-aligned $J=9$ pairs turns out to be unsatisfactory while an important contribution, particularly in the ground state, is seen to arise from isovector $J=0$ and isoscalar $J=1$ pairs. Thus, contrary to previous studies, we find no compelling evidence of a spin-aligned pairing phase in $^{92}$Pd.

The states of all $N\geq Z$ nuclei belonging to the $A=24$ isobaric chain are represented as a superposition of two-quartet states, with quartets being characterized by isospin $T$ and angular momentum $J$. These quartets are assumed to be those describing the lowest states in $^{20}$Ne ($T_z$=0), $^{20}$F ($T_z$=1) and $^{20}$O ($T_z$=2). We find that the spectrum of the self-conjugate nucleus $^{24}$Mg can be well reproduced in terms of $T$=0 quartets only and that, among these, the $J$=0 quartet plays by far the leading role in the structure of the ground state. The same conclusion is drawn in the case of the three-quartet $N=Z$ nucleus $^{28}$Si. As an application of the quartet formalism to nuclei not confined to the $sd$ shell, we provide a description of the low-lying spectrum of the proton-rich $^{92}$Pd. The results achieved indicate that, in 4$n$ nuclei, four-body degrees of freedom are more important and more general than usually expected.

It is shown that the quartet formalism describes accurately the ground state energies of realistic isovector plus isoscalar pairing Hamiltonians in nuclei with valence particles outside the 16O, 40Ca and 100Sn cores. Within the quartet formalism we analyse the competition between isovector and isoscalar pairing correlations and find that for nuclei with the valence nucleons above the cores 40Ca and 100Sn the isovector correlations account for the largest fraction of the total pairing correlations. This is not the case for sd-shell nuclei for which isoscalar correlations prevail. We propose a new approach for the treatment of isovector pairing in self-consistent mean field calculations which conserves exactly the isospin and the particle number in the pairing channel. The mean field is generated by a Skyrme-HF functional while the isovector pairing correlations are described in terms of quartets formed by two neutrons and two protons coupled to the total isospin T=0. In this framework we analyse the contribution of isovector pairing to the symmetry and Wigner energies. It is shown that the isovector pairing provides a good description of the Wigner energy, which is not the case for the mean field calculations in which the isovector pairing is treated by BCS-like models.

We describe the ground state of the isovector pairing Hamiltonian in self-conjugate nuclei by a product of collective quartets of different structure built from two neutrons and two protons coupled to total isospin T=0. The structure of the collective quartets is determined by an iterative variational procedure based on a sequence of diagonalizations of the pairing Hamiltonian in spaces of reduced size. The accuracy of the quartet model is tested for N=Z nuclei carrying valence nucleons outside the $^{16}$O, $^{40}$Ca, and $^{100}$Sn cores. The comparison with the exact solutions of the pairing Hamiltonian, obtained by shell model diagonalization, shows that the quartet model is able to describe the isovector pairing energy with very high precision. The predictions of the quartet model are also compared to those of the simpler quartet condensation model in which all the collective quartets are assumed to be identical.

The thermodynamics of pairing phase-transition in nuclei is studied in the canonical ensemble and treating the pairing correlations in a finite-temperature variation after projection BCS approach (FT-VAP). Due to the restoration of particle number conservation, the pairing gap and the specific heat calculated in the FT-VAP approach vary smoothly with the temperature, indicating a gradual transition from the superfluid to the normal phase, as expected in finite systems. We have checked that the predictions of the FT-VAP approach are very accurate when compared to the results obtained by an exact diagonalization of the pairing Hamiltonian. The influence of pairing correlations on specific heat is analysed for the isotopes $^{161,162}$Dy and $^{171,172}$Yb. It is shown that the FT-VAP approach, applied with a level density provided by mean field calculations and supplemented, at high energies, by the level density of the back-shifted Fermi gas model, can approximate reasonably well the main properties of specific heat extracted from experimental data. However, the detailed shape of the calculated specific heat is rather sensitive to the assumption made for the mean field.

The ground state correlations induced by a general pairing Hamiltonian in a finite system of like fermions are described in terms of four-body correlated structures (quartets). These are real superpositions of products of two pairs of particles in time-reversed states. Quartets are determined variationally through an iterative sequence of diagonalizations of the Hamiltonian in restricted model spaces and are, in principle, all distinct from one another. The ground state is represented as a product of quartets to which, depending on the number of particles (supposed to be even, in any case), an extra collective pair is added. The extra pair is also determined variationally. In case of pairing in a spherically symmetric mean field, both the quartets and the extra pair (if any) are characterized by a total angular momentum J=0. Realistic applications of the quartet formalism are carried out for the Sn isotopes with the valence neutrons in the 50-82 neutron shell. Exact ground state correlation energies, occupation numbers and pair transfer matrix elements are reproduced to a very high degree of precision. The formalism also lends itself to a straightforward and accurate description of the lowest seniority 0 and 2 excited states of the pairing Hamiltonian. A simplified representation of the ground state as a product of identical quartets is eventually discussed and found to improve considerably upon the more traditional particle-number projected-BCS approach.

We study the competition between alpha-type and conventional pair condensation in the ground state of nuclei with neutrons and protons interacting via a charge-independent pairing interaction. The ground state is described by a product of two condensates, one of alpha-like quartets and the other one of pairs in excess relative to the isotope with N=Z. It is shown that this ansatz for the ground state gives very accurate pairing correlation energies for nuclei with the valence nucleons above the closed cores 16O, 40Ca and 100Sn. These results indicate that alpha-type correlations are important not only for the self-conjugate nuclei but also for nuclei away of N=Z line. In the latter case alpha-like quartets coexist with the collective Cooper pairs formed by the nucleons in excess.

The quartets have an alpha-like structure and are formed by collective isovector pairs. The accuracy of the QCM is tested for N=Z nuclei for which exact shell model diagonalizations can be performed. The calculations are done with two isovector pairing forces, one extracted from standard shell model interactions and the other of seniority type, acting, respectively, upon spherical and axially-deformed single-particle states. It is shown that for all calculated nuclei the QCM gives very accurate values for the pairing correlations energies, with errors which do not exceed 1%. These results show clearly that the correlations induced by the isovector pairing in self-conjugate nuclei are of quartet type and also indicate that QCM is the proper tool to calculate the isovector proton-neutron correlations in mean field pairing models.

After a short introduction and presentation of the formalism we discuss how the pairing correlations affect the structure of the inner crust matter, i.e., the proton to neutron ratio and the size of Wigner-Seitz cells. Then we show how the pairing correlations influence, though the specific heat of neutrons, the thermalization of the crust in the case of a rapid cooling scenario.

We analyse how the structure of the inner curst is influenced by the pairing correlations. The inner-crust matter, formed by nuclear clusters immersed in a superfluid neutron gas and ultra-relativistic electrons, is treated in the Wigner-Seitz approximation. The properties of the Wigner-Seitz cells, i.e., their neutron to proton ratio and their radius at a given baryonic density, are obtained from the energy minimization at beta equilibrium. To obtain the binding energy of baryonic matter we perform Skyrme-HFB calculations with zero-range density-dependent pairing forces of various intensities. We find that the Wigner-Seitz cells have much smaller numbers of protons compared to previous calculations. For the dense cells the binding energy of the configurations with small proton numbers do not converge to a well-defined minimum value which precludes the determination of their structure. We show that for these cells there is a significant underestimation of the binding energy due to the boundary conditions at the border of the cells imposed through the Wigner-Seitz approximation.

We discuss the effect of pairing on two-neutron space correlations in deformed nuclei. The spatial correlations are described by the pairing tensor in coordinate space calculated in the HFB approach. The calculations are done using the D1S Gogny force. We show that the pairing tensor has a rather small extension in the relative coordinate, a feature observed earlier in spherical nuclei. It is pointed out that in deformed nuclei the coherence length corresponding to the pairing tensor has a pattern similar to what we have found previously in spherical nuclei, i.e., it is maximal in the interior of the nucleus and then it is decreasing rather fast in the surface region where it reaches a minimal value of about 2 fm. This minimal value of the coherence length in the surface is essentially determined by the finite size properties of single-particle states in the vicinity of the chemical potential and has little to do with enhanced pairing correlations in the nuclear surface. It is shown that in nuclei the coherence length is not a good indicator of the intensity of pairing correlations. This feature is contrasted with the situation in infinite matter.

We discuss the thermalisation process of the neutron stars crust described by solving the heat transport equation with a microscopic input for the specific heat of baryonic matter. The heat equation is solved with initial conditions specific to a rapid cooling of the core. To calculate the specific heat of inner crust baryonic matter, i.e., nuclear clusters and unbound neutrons, we use the quasiparticle spectrum provided by the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach at finite temperature. In this framework we analyse the dependence of the crust thermalisation on pairing properties and on cluster structure of inner crust matter. It is shown that the pairing correlations reduce the crust thermalisation time by a very large fraction. The calculations show also that the nuclear clusters have a non-negligible influence on the time evolution of the surface temperature of the neutron star.

The particle number projected BCS (PBCS) approximation is tested against the exact solution of the SO(5) Richardson-Gaudin model for isovector pairing in a system of non-degenerate single particle orbits. Two isovector PBCS wave functions are considered. One is constructed as a single proton-neutron pair condensate, while the other corresponds to a product of a neutron pair condensate and a proton pair condensate. The PBCS equations are solved using a recurrence method and the analysis is performed for systems with an equal number of neutrons and protons distributed in a sequence of equally spaced 4-fold (spin-isospin) degenerate levels. The results show that although PBCS improves significantly over BCS, the agreement of PBCS with the exact solution is less satisfactory than in the case of the SU(2) Richardson model for pairing between like particles.

We analyze the accuracy of BCS-based approximations for calculating correlation energies and odd-even energy differences in 2-component fermionic systems with a small number of pairs. The analysis is focused on comparing BCS and projected BCS treatments with the exact solution of the pairing Hamiltonian, considering parameter ranges appropriate for nuclear pairing energies. We find that the projected BCS is quite accurate over the entire range of coupling strengths in spaces of up to about 20 doubly degenerate orbitals. It is also quite accurate for two cases we considered with a more realistic Hamiltonian, representing the nuclei around 117Sn and 207Pb. However, the projected BCS significantly underestimates the energies for much larger spaces when the pairing is weak.

Finite temperature Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations are performed in Sn isotopes using Skyrme and zero-range, density-dependent pairing interactions. For both stable and very neutron-rich nuclei the critical temperature at which pairing correlations vanish is independent of the volume/surface nature of the pairing interaction. The value of the critical temperature follows approximatively the empirical rule T$_c$ $\simeq$ 0.5 $Δ_{T=0}$ for all the calculated isotopes, showing that the critical temperature could be deduced from the pairing gap at zero temperature. On the other hand, the pairing gap at temperatures just below T$_c$ is strongly sensitive to the volume/surface nature of the pairing interaction.

The appearance of such structures depends sensitively on the effective interaction adopted. This is illustrated by comparing the predictions of SLy4 and SkI4 in the Ca and Zr isotopic chains. The former force gives no halo effect, the latter predicts a neutron halo in the Zr chain with A>122 due to the weakly bound orbitals 3p1/2 and 3p3/2. The structure of the halo is analyzed in terms of the occupation probabilities of these orbitals and their partial contributions to the neutron density. The anti-halo effect in Ni and Zr isotopes is also discussed by comparing the occupation probabilities of Hartree-Fock neutron single-particle states near the Fermi energy with the corresponding HFB quasiparticle states.

A density dependent, effective nucleon-nucleon force of the Skyrme type is derived from the quark-meson coupling model -- a self-consistent, relativistic quark level description of nuclear matter. This new formulation requires no assumption that the mean scalar field is small and hence constitutes a significant advance over earlier work. The similarity of the effective interaction to the widely used SkM$^*$ force encourages us to apply it to a wide range of nuclear problems, beginning with the binding energies and charge distributions of doubly magic nuclei. Finding acceptable results in this conventional arena, we apply the same effective interaction, within the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach, to the properties of nuclei far from stability. The resulting two neutron drip lines and shell quenching are quite satisfactory. Finally, we apply the relativistic formulation to the properties of dense nuclear matter in anticipation of future application to the properties of neutron stars.

A generalization of the Complex Shell Model formalism is presented which includes antibound states in the basis. These states, together with bound states, Gamow states, and the continuum background, represented by properly chosen scattering waves, form a representation where all states are treated on the same footing. Two-particle states are evaluated within this formalism and observable two-particle resonances are defined. The formalism is illustrated in the well known case of $^{11}$Li in its bound ground state and in $^{70}$Ca(gs), which is also bound. Both cases are found to have a halo structure. These halo structures are described within the generalized Complex Shell Model. We investigated the formation of two-particle resonances in these nuclei, but no evidence of such resonances was found.

Abstract:
We present a simple method for calculating the energies and the widths of quasiparticle resonant states. The method is based on BCS equations solved in the Berggren representation. In this representation the quasiparticle resonances are associated to the Gamow states of the mean field. The method is illustrated for the case of neutron-rich nuclei $^{20-22}$O and $^{84}$Ni. It is shown that the c…

In this representation the quasiparticle resonances are associated to the Gamow states of the mean field. The method is illustrated for the case of neutron-rich nuclei $^{20-22}$O and $^{84}$Ni. It is shown that the contribution of the continuum coupling to the pairing correlations is small and largely dominated by a few resonant states close to the continuum threshold.

We analyse how the spatial localisation properties of pairing correlations are changing in a major neutron shell of heavy nuclei. It is shown that the radial distribution of the pairing density depends strongly on whether the chemical potential is close to a low or a high angular momentum level and has very little sensitivity to whether the pairing force acts in the surface or in the bulk. The averaged pairing density over one major shell is however rather flat, practically independent of the pairing force. Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations for the isotopic chain $^{100-132}$Sn are presented for demonstration purposes.

We investigate the nuclear collective excitations of Wigner-Seitz cells containing nuclear clusters immersed in a gas of neutrons. This baryonic non-uniform system is specific to the structure of inner crust matter of neutron stars. The collective excitations are studied in the framework of a spherical Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov + Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation, formulated in coordinate representation. The calculations are done for two representative Wigner-Seitz cells with baryonic density equal to 0.02 fm$^{-3}$ and 0.08 fm$^{-3}$. It is shown that the excitations with low multipolarities are concentrated almost entirely in one strongly collective mode which exhausts a very large fraction of the energy-weighted sum rule. Since these collective modes are located at very low energies compared to the giant resonances in standard nuclei, they may affect significantly the specific heat of baryonic inner crust matter of neutron stars.
