Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have emerged as a spectrum- and energy-efficient technology to enhance the coverage of wireless communications within the upcoming 6G networks. Recently, novel extensions of this technology, referred to as multi-sector beyond diagonal RIS (BD-RIS), have been proposed, where the configurable elements are divided into $L$ sectors $(L \geq 2)$ and arranged as a polygon prism, with each sector covering $1/L$ space. This paper presents a performance analysis of a multi-user communication system assisted by a multi-sector BD-RIS operating in time-switching (TS) mode. Specifically, we derive closed-form expressions for the moment-generating function (MGF), probability density function (PDF), and cumulative density function (CDF) of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) per user. Furthermore, closed-form expressions for the outage probability, achievable spectral and energy efficiency, symbol error probability, and diversity order for the proposed system model are derived. Moreover, a comparison is performed with the simultaneously transmitting and reflecting (STAR)-RISs, a special case of multi-sector BD-RIS with two sectors. Our analysis shows that for a fixed number of elements, increasing the sectors improves outage performance at the expense of reduced diversity order compared to STAR-RIS. This trade-off is influenced by the Rician factors of the cascaded channel and the number of configurable elements per sector. However, this superiority in slope is observed at outage probability values below $10^{-5}$, which remains below practical operating ranges of communication systems. Additionally, simulations are provided to validate the accuracy of our theoretical analyses showing a notable $182\%$ increase in spectral efficiency and a $238\%$ increase in energy efficiency when transitioning from a 2-sector to a 6-sector configuration.

The challenging demands of the ATLAS High Luminosity (HL-LHC) Upgrade aim for a complete swap of new generation sensors that should cope with the ultimate radiation hardness. FBK has been one of the prime foundries to develop and fabricate such radiation-hard 3D silicon (Si) sensors. These sensors are chosen to be deployed into the innermost layer of the ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk). Recently, a pre-production batch of 3D Si sensors of 50x50 um2 pixel geometry, compatible with the full-size ITKPix (RD53B) readout chip, was fabricated. Two wafers holding temporary metal were diced at IZM, Germany, and a systematic QC test campaign was carried out at the University of Trento electronics laboratory. The paper briefly describes the 3D Si sensor design for ATLAS ITk and the required QC characterization setups. It comprises electrical tests (i.e., I-V, C-V, and I-T) of non-irradiated RD53B sensors. In addition, the study of several parametric analyses, i.e., oxide charge density, oxide thickness, inter-pixel resistance, inter-pixel capacitance, etc., are reported with the aid of Process Control Monitor (PCM) structures.

his paper presents a simple approach for drone navigation to follow a predetermined path using visual input only without reliance on a Global Positioning System (GPS). A Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is used to output the steering command of the drone in an end-to-end approach. We tested our approach in two simulated environments in the Unreal Engine using the AirSim plugin for drone simulation. Results show that the proposed approach, despite its simplicity, has average cross track distance less than 2.9 meters in the simulated environment. We also investigate the significance of data augmentation in path following. Finally, we conclude by suggesting possible enhancements for extending our approach to more difficult paths in real life, in the hope that one day visual navigation will become the norm in GPS-denied zones.

This paper presents a novel approach for aerial drone autonomous navigation along predetermined paths using only visual input form an onboard camera and without reliance on a Global Positioning System (GPS). It is based on using a deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) combined with a regressor to output the drone steering commands. Furthermore, multiple auxiliary navigation paths that form a navigation envelope are used for data augmentation to make the system adaptable to real-life deployment scenarios. The approach is suitable for automating drone navigation in applications that exhibit regular trips or visits to same locations such as environmental and desertification monitoring, parcel/aid delivery and drone-based wireless internet delivery. In this case, the proposed algorithm replaces human operators, enhances accuracy of GPS-based map navigation, alleviates problems related to GPS-spoofing and enables navigation in GPS-denied environments. Our system is tested in two scenarios using the Unreal Engine-based AirSim plugin for drone simulation with promising results of average cross track distance less than 1.4 meters and mean waypoints minimum distance of less than 1 meter.

A model is developed to explain rise time of a spherical intruder placed in a granular bed, which is considered as fluid. Phenomenon of rising intruder in a granular bed is well known as Brazil nut effect. Radius of the intruder is varied with $R_n = R_0 n, n = 1 .. 10$. An approximation for $t << τ$ is chosen in order to simplify the solution of second order differential equation of intruder vertical position to obtain the rise time T. A non-physical parameter $α$ and also transformation from $T$ to $T'$ are needed to be introduced in order to control the results to mimic reported experiment qualitatively. Several forms of rise time $T_n$ and also transformed rise time $T_n'$ against $n$ are presented and discussed.
