We present an action for minimal massive gravity (MMG) in three dimensions in terms of a dreibein and an independent spin connection. Furthermore, the construction provides an action principle for an infinite family of so-called third-way consistent generalizations of the three-dimensional Einstein field equations, including exotic massive gravity and new higher-order generalizations. It allows to systematically construct the matter couplings for these models, including the couplings to fermions, depending on the spin connection. In particular, we construct different supersymmetric extensions of MMG, and derive their second order fermionic field equations. This establishes a new class of three-dimensional supergravity theories and we discuss their limit to topological massive supergravity. Finally, we identify the landscape of (A)dS vacua of the supersymmetric models. We analyze the spectrum and the unitarity properties of these vacua. We recover the known AdS vacua of MMG which are bulk and boundary unitary.

They include stationary axisymmetric spacetimes, Einstein-Rosen waves with two polarizations, Gowdy models, and colliding plane gravitational waves.
We review the general formalism of linear systems with variable spectral parameter, solution generating techniques, and various classes of exact solutions. In the case of the Einstein-Rosen waves, we also discuss the Poisson algebra of charges and its quantization.

We show how to use Exceptional Field Theory to efficiently compute $n$-point couplings of all Kaluza-Klein modes for vacua that can be uplifted from maximal gauged supergravities to 10/11 dimensions via a consistent truncation. Via the AdS/CFT correspondence, these couplings encode the $n$-point functions of holographic conformal fields theories. Our methods show that these $n$-point couplings are controlled by the $n$-point invariant of scalar harmonics of the maximally symmetric point of the truncation, allowing us to show that infinitely-many $n$-point couplings vanish for any vacua of the truncation, even though they may be allowed by the remnant symmetry group of the vacua. This gives new results even for the maximally supersymmetric AdS$_5 \times S^5$, AdS$_4 \times S^7$ and AdS$_7 \times S^4$ vacua of string and M-theory, where we prove old conjectures about the vanishing of $n$-point extremal and near-extremal couplings.
Focusing in particular on cubic couplings for vacua of 5-dimensional gauged supergravity, we derive explicit universal formulae encoding these couplings for any vacuum within a consistent truncation. We use this to compute known and new couplings involving spin-0, spin-1, spin-2 for the AdS$_5 \times S^5$ vacuum of IIB string theory.

Consistent reductions of higher-dimensional (matter-coupled) gravity theories on spheres have been constructed and classified in an important paper by Cvetič, Lü and Pope. We close a gap in the classification and study the case when the resulting lower-dimensional theory is two-dimensional. We construct the consistent reduction of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity on a $d$-sphere $S^d$ to two-dimensional dilaton-gravity coupled to a gauged sigma model with target space ${\rm SL}(d+1)/{\rm SO}(d+1)$. The truncation contains solutions of type AdS$_2\times Σ_d$ where the internal space $Σ_d$ is a deformed sphere. In particular, the construction includes the consistent truncation around the near-horizon geometry of the boosted Kerr string. In turn, we find that an AdS$_2\times S^d$ background with the round $S^d$ within a consistent truncation requires $d>3$ and an additional cosmological term in the higher-dimensional theory.

While the two-derivative supergravity exhibits a symmetry enhancement to the U-duality group ${\rm O}(d+1,d+1)$, the continuous group is known to be broken to ${\rm O}(d,d,\mathbb{R})$ by the first $α'$ correction. We revisit this observation by computing the full effective actions in three dimensions to first order in $α'$ by dualizing the vector gauge fields. We give a formally ${\rm O}(d+1,d+1)$ invariant formulation by invoking a vector compensator, and we observe a chiral pattern that allows one to reconstruct the bosonic action from the heterotic action. Furthermore, we obtain a particular massive deformation by integrating out the external $B$ field. This induces a novel Chern-Simons term based on composite connections that, remarkably, is ${\rm O}(d+1,d+1)$ invariant to leading order in the deformation parameter.

We present a new action for the model (and its higher order extensions) in terms of a dreibein and an independent spin connection. From this, we construct its supersymmetric extension. Surprisingly, all vacua complying with bulk and boundary unitarity appear to break supersymmetry spontaneously. Yet, its covariant divergence consistently vanishes after iterating the equation, realizing a spin-1 analogue of `minimal massive gravity', which has been dubbed `third way consistent'. In this note, we show that after dualization of the three-dimensional gauge fields, the model possesses a natural action as a Chern-Simons coupled gauged sigma model. In this dual formulation, coupling to matter and to gravity becomes straightforward. As a direct application, we derive the coupling of the model to N=1 supergravity.

For non-chiral $D=6$, ${\cal N}_{\rm 6d}=(1,1)$ supergravity, we find two different consistent truncations to three-dimensional supergravity, retaining different subsets of Kaluza-Klein modes, thereby offering access to different subsectors of the full nonlinear dynamics. As an application, we construct a two-parameter family of ${\rm AdS}_3\times M^3$ backgrounds on squashed spheres preserving ${\rm U}(1)^2$ isometries. For generic value of the parameters, these solutions break all supersymmetries, yet they remain perturbatively stable within a non-vanishing region in parameter space. E$_9$ exceptional field theory provides a unified description of eleven-dimensional and type IIB supergravity covariant under the affine Kac-Moody symmetry of two-dimensional maximal supergravity. We present two equivalent formulations of the dynamics, which both rely on a pseudo-Lagrangian supplemented by a twisted self-duality equation. One formulation involves a minimal set of fields and gauge symmetries, which uniquely determine the entire dynamics. The other formulation extends $\mathfrak{e}_9$ by half of the Virasoro algebra and makes direct contact with the integrable structure of two-dimensional supergravity. Our results apply directly to other affine Kac-Moody groups, such as the Geroch group of general relativity.

These backgrounds are known to correspond to Type IIB S-fold solutions with internal manifold of topology $S^1\times S^5$. The family of AdS$_4$ vacua is parametrized by a modulus $χ$. Although $χ$ appears non-compact in the four-dimensional supergravity, we show that this is just an artefact of the four-dimensional description. We give the 10-dimensional geometric interpretation of the modulus and show that it actually has periodicity of $\frac{2π}{T}$, which is the inverse radius of $S^1$. We deduce this by providing the explicit $D=10$ uplift of the family of vacua as well as computing the entire modulus-dependent Kaluza-Klein spectrum as a function of $χ$. At the special values $χ=0$ and $χ=\fracπ{T}$, the symmetry enhances according to ${\rm U}(1)^2\rightarrow{\rm U}(2)$, giving rise however to inequivalent Kaluza-Klein spectra. At $χ=\fracπ{T}$, this realizes a bosonic version of the "space invaders" scenario with additional massless vector fields arising from formerly massive fields at higher Kaluza-Klein levels.

Exceptional field theories yield duality-covariant formulations of higher-dimensional supergravity. They have proven to be an efficient tool for the construction of consistent truncations around various background geometries. In this paper, we demonstrate how the formalism can moreover be turned into a powerful tool for computing the Kaluza-Klein mass spectra around these backgrounds. Most of these geometries have little to no remaining symmetries and their spectra are accessible to standard methods only in selected subsectors. The present formalism not only grants access to the full Kaluza-Klein spectra but also provides the scheme to identify the resulting mass eigenstates in higher dimensions. As a first illustration, we rederive in compact form the mass spectrum of IIB supergravity on $S^5$. We further discuss the application of our formalism to determine the mass spectra of higher Kaluza-Klein multiplets around the warped geometries corresponding to some prominent ${\cal N}=2$ and ${\cal N}=0$ AdS vacua in maximal supergravity.

A systematic procedure is developed that brings this action into a minimal form in which all fields except the metric carry only first order derivatives. We determine the complete spacetime action to first order in $α'$ for the massless fields of bosonic string theory compactified on a $d$-dimensional torus. A fully systematic procedure is developed that brings the action into a minimal form in which all fields apart from the metric enter only with first-order derivatives. T-duality implies that this action must have a global $\mathrm{O}(d,d,\mathbb{R})$ symmetry, and we show that this requires a Green-Schwarz type mechanism for $α'$-deformed $\mathrm{O}(d,d,\mathbb{R})$ transformations. We review the higher gauge symmetries in double and exceptional field theory from the viewpoint of an embedding tensor construction. This is based on a (typically infinite-dimensional) Lie algebra $\frak{g}$ and a choice of representation $R$. The embedding tensor is a map from the representation space $R$ into $\frak{g}$ satisfying a compatibility condition (`quadratic constraint'). The Lie algebra structure on $\frak{g}$ is transported to a Leibniz--Loday algebra on $R$, which in turn gives rise to an $L_{\infty}$-structure. We review how the gauge structures of double and exceptional field theory fit into this framework.

Using exceptional field theory we construct supersymmetric warped AdS$_7$ vacua of massive IIA and AdS$_6$ vacua of IIB, as well as their consistent truncations including vector multiplets. We show there are no consistent truncations of massive IIA supergravity around its supersymmetric AdS$_7$ vacua with vector multiplets when the Roman's mass is non-vanishing. For AdS$_6$ vacua of IIB supergravity, we find that in addition to the consistent truncation to pure $\mathrm{F}(4)$ gauged SUGRA, the only other half-maximal truncations that are consistent result in $\mathrm{F}(4)$ gauged SUGRA coupled to one or two Abelian vector multiplets, to three non-Abelian vector multiplets, leading to an $\mathrm{ISO}(3)$ gauged SUGRA, or to three non-Abelian plus one Abelian vector multiplet, leading to an $\mathrm{ISO}(3) \times \mathrm{U}(1)$ gauged SUGRA. These consistent truncations with vector multiplets exist when the two holomorphic functions that define the AdS$_6$ vacua satisfy certain differential conditions which we derive. We use these to deduce that no globally regular AdS$_6$ solutions admit a consistent truncation to $\mathrm{F}(4)$ gauged SUGRA with two vector multiplets, and show that the Abelian T-dual of the Brandhuber-Oz vacuum allows a consistent truncation to $\mathrm{F}(4)$ gauged SUGRA with a single vector multiplet.

We formulate the locally supersymmetric E$_{7(7)}$ exceptional field theory in a $(4+56|32)$ dimensional superspace, corresponding to a 4D $N\!=\!8$ "external" superspace augmented with an "internal" 56-dimensional space. This entails the unification of external diffeomorphisms and local supersymmetry transformations into superdiffeomorphisms. The solutions to the superspace Bianchi identities lead to on-shell duality equations for the $p$-form field strengths for $p\leq 4$. The reduction to component fields provides a complete description of the on-shell supersymmetric theory. As an application of our results, we perform a generalized Scherk-Schwarz reduction and obtain the superspace formulation of maximal gauged supergravity in four dimensions parametrized by an embedding tensor.

We present a Lagrangian formulation for ${\cal N}=8$ superconformal field theories in three spacetime dimensions that is general enough to encompass infinite-dimensional gauge algebras that generally go beyond Lie algebras. To this end we employ Chern-Simons theories based on Leibniz algebras, which give rise to L$_{\infty}$ algebras and are defined on the dual space $\frak{g}^*$ of a Lie algebra $\frak{g}$ by means of an embedding tensor map $\vartheta :\frak{g}^*\rightarrow \frak{g}$. We show that for the Lie algebra $\frak{sdiff}_3$ of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms on a 3-manifold there is a natural embedding tensor defining a Leibniz algebra on the space of one-forms. Specifically, we show that the cotangent bundle to any 3-manifold with a volume-form carries the structure of a (generalized) Courant algebroid. The resulting ${\cal N}=8$ superconformal field theories are shown to be equivalent to Bandos-Townsend theories. We show that the theory based on $S^3$ is an infinite-dimensional generalization of the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson model that in turn is a consistent truncation of the full theory. We also review a Scherk-Schwarz reduction on $S^2\times S^1$, which gives the super-Yang-Mills theory with gauge algebra $\frak{sdiff}_2$, and we construct massive deformations.

These theories require fields that are interpreted as components of the dual graviton in order to build complete multiplets under the exceptional groups E$_{d(d)}$, $d=2,\ldots, 9$. Circumventing no-go arguments, consistent theories for such fields have been constructed by incorporating additional covariant compensator fields. The latter fields are needed for gauge invariance but also for on-shell equivalence with $D=11$ and type IIB supergravity. Moreover, these fields play a non-trivial role in generalized Scherk-Schwarz compactifications, as for instance in consistent Kaluza-Klein truncation on AdS$_4\times {\rm S}^7$.

Special cases of such theories appear in gauged supergravity, where the Leibniz algebra is defined in terms of the global (Lie) symmetry algebra of the ungauged limit and an embedding tensor. We show that the Leibniz algebra of generalized diffeomorphisms in exceptional field theory can similarly be obtained from a Lie algebra that describes the enhanced symmetry of an `ungauged phase' of the theory. We present the uplift of the GPPZ solution of the five-dimensional maximal supergravity to ten dimensions. The five dimensional solution involves two real scalar fields, with one of them encoding holographically the (norm of the complex) supersymmetric ${\mathcal N}=1$ mass deformation and the other the real part of the gaugino condensate. We embed this solution in a consistent truncation of $D=5$ maximal supergravity which involves two complex scalars dual to the complex mass deformations and the complex gaugino condensate, and a $U(1)$ gauge field dual to the $U(1)_R$ current, and uplift it to ten dimensions. The ten dimensional solution is completely explicit, with all fields given in terms of elementary functions. The metric and the axion-dilaton agree with those of a partial uplift of the GPPZ flow by Pilch and Warner. We analyze the asymptotics and the singularity structure of the ten dimensional solution. The uplifted solution is singular, but the singularity is milder than that of the five dimensional solution, and there is conformal frame in which the metric is only singular at one point of $S^5$. We compare the asymptotics of the $10d$ solution with that of the Polchinski-Strassler and Freedman-Minahan solutions, and find agreement with Freedman-Minahan and disagreement with Polchinski-Strassler. In particular, we infer that while the Polchinski-Strassler $10d$ fields satisfy the correct boundary conditions, they do not solve the field equations near the boundary.

We present the supersymmetric extension of the recently constructed E$_{8(8)}$ exceptional field theory -- the manifestly U-duality covariant formulation of the untruncated ten- and eleven-dimensional supergravities. This theory is formulated on a (3+248) dimensional spacetime (modulo section constraint) in which the extended coordinates transform in the adjoint representation of E$_{8(8)}$. All bosonic fields are E$_{8(8)}$ tensors and transform under internal generalized diffeomorphisms. The fermions are tensors under the generalized Lorentz group SO(1,2)$\times$SO(16), where SO(16) is the maximal compact subgroup of E$_{8(8)}$. Vanishing generalized torsion determines the corresponding spin connections to the extent they are required to formulate the field equations and supersymmetry transformation laws. We determine the supersymmetry transformations for all bosonic and fermionic fields such that they consistently close into generalized diffeomorphisms. In particular, the covariantly constrained gauge vectors of E$_{8(8)}$ exceptional field theory combine with the standard supergravity fields into a single supermultiplet. We give the complete extended Lagrangian and show its invariance under supersymmetry. Upon solution of the section constraint the theory reduces to full D=11 or type IIB supergravity.

Just as string T-duality originates from transforming field equations into Bianchi identities on the string worldsheet, so it has been suggested that M-theory U-dualities originate from transforming field equations into Bianchi identities on the membrane worldvolume. However, this encounters a problem unless the target space has dimension $D = p + 1$. We identify the problem to be the nonintegrability of the U-duality transformation assigned to the pull-back map. Just as a double geometry renders manifest the $O(D,D)$ string T-duality, here we show in the case of the M2-brane in $D = 3$ that a generalised geometry renders manifest the $SL(3) \times SL(2)$ U-duality. In the case of M2-brane in $D=4$, with and without extra target space coordinates, we show that only the ${\rm GL}(4,R)\ltimes R^4$ subgroup of the expected $SL(5,R)$ U-duality symmetry is realised.

We use exceptional field theory as a tool to work out the full non-linear reduction ansaetze for the AdS$_5\times S^5$ compactification of IIB supergravity and its non-compact counterparts in which the sphere $S^5$ is replaced by the inhomogeneous hyperboloidal space $H^{p,q}$. The resulting theories are the maximal 5D supergravities with gauge groups SO(p,q). They are consistent truncations in the sense that every solution of 5D supergravity lifts to a solution of IIB supergravity. In particular, every stationary point and every holographic RG flow of the scalar potentials for the compact and non-compact 5D gaugings directly lift to solutions of IIB supergravity.

We review E$_{6(6)}$ exceptional field theory with a particular emphasis on the embedding of type IIB supergravity, which is obtained by picking the GL$(5)\times {\rm SL}(2)$ invariant solution of the section constraint. We work out the precise decomposition of the E$_{6(6)}$ covariant fields on the one hand and the Kaluza-Klein-like decomposition of type IIB supergravity on the other. Matching the symmetries, this allows us to establish the precise dictionary between both sets of fields. Finally, we establish on-shell equivalence. In particular, we show how the self-duality constraint for the four-form potential in type IIB is reconstructed from the duality relations in the off-shell formulation of the E$_{6(6)}$ exceptional field theory.

We first classify all supersymmetric solutions of the 3-dimensional half-maximal ungauged supergravity that possess a timelike Killing vector coming from the Killing spinor bilinear by considering their identification under the complexification of the local symmetry of the theory. We first classify all supersymmetric solutions of the 3-dimensional half-maximal ungauged supergravity that possess a timelike Killing vector coming from the Killing spinor bilinear by considering their identification under the complexification of the local symmetry of the theory. It is found that only solutions that preserve $16/2^n, 1 \leq n \leq 3$ real supersymmetries are allowed. We then classify supersymmetric solutions under the real local symmetry of the theory and we are able to solve the equations of motion for all of them. It is shown that all such solutions can be expressed as a direct sum of solutions of the integrable Liouville and SU(3) Toda systems. This completes the construction of all supersymmetric solutions of the model since the null case has already been solved.

Abstract:
We construct the supersymmetric completion of E$_{6(6)}$-covariant exceptional field theory. The theory is based on a $(5+27)$-dimensional generalized space-time subject to a covariant section constraint. The fermions are tensors under the local Lorentz group ${\rm SO}(1,4)\times {\rm USp}(8)$ and transform as weighted scalars under the E$_{6(6)}$ (internal) generalized diffeomorphisms. We present…

We present the complete Lagrangian and prove its invariance under supersymmetry. Upon explicit solution of the section constraint the theory embeds full $D=11$ supergravity and IIB supergravity, respectively.

We present the generalized Scherk-Schwarz reduction ansatz for the full supersymmetric exceptional field theory in terms of group valued twist matrices subject to consistency equations. With this ansatz the field equations precisely reduce to those of lower-dimensional gauged supergravity parametrized by an embedding tensor. We explicitly construct a family of twist matrices as solutions of the consistency equations. They induce gauged supergravities with gauge groups SO(p,q) and CSO(p,q,r). Geometrically, they describe compactifications on internal spaces given by spheres and (warped) hyperboloides $H^{p,q}$, thus extending the applicability of generalized Scherk-Schwarz reductions beyond homogeneous spaces. Together with the dictionary that relates exceptional field theory to D=11 and IIB supergravity, respectively, the construction defines an entire new family of consistent truncations of the original theories. These include not only compactifications on spheres of different dimensions (such as AdS$_5\times S^5$), but also various hyperboloid compactifications giving rise to a higher-dimensional embedding of supergravities with non-compact and non-semisimple gauge groups.
