The utilization of ferrimagnets in spintronic applications purportedly offers the potential for high-speed and energy-efficient switching of magnetic states, coupled with their notable stability. This collection of characteristics is commonly observed in ferrimagnetic materials that are in close proximity to states of magnetic or angular momentum compensation. This is owing to the presence of two antiparallel ordered magnetic sublattices that exhibit differing responses to variations in temperature or composition. In the vicinity of the magnetic compensation state, an external field has the capacity to disrupt the collinearity between the sublattices, resulting in the codirectionality of the magnetic projections. The existence of the canted phase has been extensively described theoretically, but its experimental investigation remains limited. Here, a violation of antiferromagnetic ordering is detected through a change in the direction of the effective field induced by the spin-orbital torque, without altering the dominant characteristics of the ferrimagnetic structure. This effect is observed both during external heating of the sample and as a consequence of Joule heating with an increase in the transmitted current. In the examined structure of W/Co70Tb30/Ru, the canted phase region is observed at approximately room temperature and at external fields on the order of 0.1 T. Through macrospin modeling and analytical explanations, a correlation between anisotropy, interlattice exchange interaction, and the presence of the canted phase region is established.

Metallic barcode nanowires (BNWs) composed of repeating heterogeneous segments fabricated by template-assisted electrodeposition can offer extended functionality in magnetic, electrical, mechanical, and biomedical applications. We can consider such nanostructures as a three-dimensional system of magnetically interacting elements with magnetic behavior strongly affected by complex magnetostatic interactions. This study discusses the influence of geometrical parameters of segments on the character of their interactions and the overall magnetic behavior of the array of BNWs having alternating magnetization. By controlling the applied current densities and the elapsed time in the electrodeposition, we regulate the dimension of the Fe-Au BNWs. We show that the Fe and Au segments are made of Fe-Au alloys with high and low magnetization. With the help of micromagnetic simulations, we discover and analyze the three types of magnetostatic interactions in the BNW arrays. As a result, we demonstrate that the dominating type of interaction depends on the geometric parameters of the Fe and Au segments and the interwire and intrawire distances.

The diode effect is fundamental to electronic devices and is widely used in rectifiers and AC-DC converters. At low temperatures, however, conventional semiconductor diodes possess a high resistivity, which yields energy loss and heating during operation. The superconducting diode effect (SDE), which relies on broken inversion symmetry in a superconductor may mitigate this obstacle: in one direction a zero-resistance supercurrent can flow through the diode, but for the opposite direction of current flow, the device enters the normal state with ohmic resistance. The application of a magnetic field can induce SDE in Nb/V/Ta superlattices with a polar structure, in superconducting devices with asymmetric patterning of pinning centres, or in superconductor/ferromagnet hybrid devices with induced vortices. The need for an external magnetic field limits their practical application. Recently, a field-free SDE was observed in a NbSe2/Nb3Br8/NbSe2 junction, and it originates from asymmetric Josephson tunneling that is induced by the Nb3Br8 barrier and the associated NbSe2/Nb3Br8 interfaces. Here, we present another implementation of zero-field SDE using noncentrosymmetric [Nb/V/Co/V/Ta]20 multilayers. The magnetic layers provide the necessary symmetry breaking and we can tune the SDE by adjusting the structural parameters, such as the constituent elements, film thickness, stacking order, and number of repetitions. We control the polarity of the SDE through the magnetization direction of the ferromagnetic layers. Artificially stacked structures, as the one used in this work, are of particular interest as they are compatible with microfabrication techniques and can be integrated with devices such as Josephson junctions. Energy-loss-free SDEs as presented in this work may therefore enable novel non-volatile memories and logic circuits with ultralow power consumption.

Perpendicularly magnetized structures that are switchable using a spin current under field-free conditions can potentially be applied in spin-orbit torque magnetic random-access memory(SOT-MRAM).Several structures have been developed;however, new structures with a simple stack structure and MRAM compatibility are urgently needed.Herein,a typical structure in a perpendicular spin-transfer torque MRAM,the Pt/Co multilayer and its synthetic antiferromagnetic counterpart with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, was observed to possess an intrinsic interlayer chiral interaction between neighboring magnetic layers, namely the interlayer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) effect. Furthermore, using a current parallel to the eigenvector of the interlayer DMI, we switched the perpendicular magnetization of both structures without a magnetic field, owing to the additional symmetry-breaking introduced by the interlayer DMI. This SOT switching scheme realized in the Pt/Co multilayer and its synthetic antiferromagnet structure may open a new avenue toward practical perpendicular SOT-MRAM and other SOT devices.

Continuous switching driven by spin-orbit torque (SOT) is preferred to realize neuromorphic computing in a spintronic manner. Here we have applied focused ion beam (FIB) to selectively illuminate patterned regions in a Pt/Co/MgO strip with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), soften the illuminated areas and realize the continuous switching by a SOT-driven nucleation process. It is found that a large in-plane field is a benefit to reduce the nucleation barrier, increase the number of nucleated domains and intermediate states during the switching progress, and finally flatten the switching curve. We proposed a phenomenological model for descripting the current dependence of magnetization and the dependence of the number of nucleation domains on the applied current and magnetic field. This study can thus promote the birth of SOT devices, which are promising in neuromorphic computing architectures.

To stabilize the non-trivial spin textures, e.g., skyrmions or chiral domain walls in ultrathin magnetic films, an additional degree of freedom such as the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (IDMI) must be induced by the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of a stacked heavy metal layer. However, advanced approaches to simultaneously control IDMI and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) are needed for future spin-orbitronic device implementations. Here, we show an effect of atomic-scale surface modulation on the magnetic properties and IDMI in ultrathin films composed of 5d heavy metal/ferromagnet/4d(5d) heavy metal or oxide interfaces, such as Pt/CoFeSiB/Ru, Pt/CoFeSiB/Ta, and Pt/CoFeSiB/MgO. The maximum IDMI value corresponds to the correlated roughness of the bottom and top interfaces of the ferromagnetic layer. The proposed approach for significant enhancement of PMA and IDMI through the interface roughness engineering at the atomic scale offers a powerful tool for the development of the spin-orbitronic devices with the precise and reliable controllability of their functionality.

Recent development of the magnetic material engineering led to achievement of the systems with a high interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). As a result, the formation of non-collinear magnetic soliton states or nonreciprocal spin wave dynamics is achievable. Typically used materials are based on bi-layers Heavy Metal/Ferromagnet, e.g., Pt/Co. These layers are characterized not only by a strong DMI, but also by the spin pum** effect and the resulting relatively large dam**. Here, we show that the considerable interfacial DMI can be also present in bi-layers based on Ru/Co, characterized with low spin pum** effect and low dam**. It is therefore a good candidate for the dynamical studies and implementations of chiral DMI. It is demonstrated by theoretical calculations that the value of DMI can be strongly affected and controlled by the strain of the lattice. We show a systematic experimental and theoretical comparison of magnetic material parameters between Pt/Co and Ru/Co bi-layers as a deserving candidate for spintronic and spin-orbitronic applications.

An experimental study of current-induced magnetization reversal of the Ru/Co/Ru and Ru/Co/Ru/W structures was carried out. In the considered structures, due to the small value of the coercive force comparable in magnitude to the Oersted field and the SOT effect field, magnetization reversal is carried out by moving a domain wall parallel to the direction of current injection. For such a case, a new method for estimating the effective field of SOT based on the analysis of the domain wall position taking into account the distribution of the Oersted field was proposed. This method allowed determining the effective longitudinal field and the efficiency of SOT equal 0.03 in the quasi-symmetric Ru/Co/Ru structure. It was found that adding the W cap** layer enhances the SOT effect by 5 times.

We experimentally study the structure and dynamics of magnetic domains in synthetic antiferromagnets based on Co/Ru/Co films. Dramatic effects arise from the interaction among the topological defects comprising the dual domain walls in these structures. Under applied magnetic fields, the dual domain walls propagate following the dynamics of bi-meronic (bi-vortex/bi-antivortex) topological defects built in the walls. Application of an external field triggers a rich dynamical response: The propagation depends on mutual orientation and chirality of bi-vortices and bi-antivortices in the domain walls. For certain configurations, we observe sudden jumps of composite domain walls in increasing field, which are associated with the decay of composite skyrmions. These features allow for enhanced control of domain-wall motion in synthetic antiferromagnets with the potential of employing them as information carriers in future logic and storage devices.
