Spintronic devices have recently attracted a lot of attention in the field of unconventional computing due to their non-volatility for short and long term memory, non-linear fast response and relatively small footprint. Here we report how voltage driven magnetization dynamics of dual free layer perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions enable to emulate spiking neurons in hardware. The output spiking rate was controlled by varying the dc bias voltage across the device. The field-free operation of this two terminal device and its robustness against an externally applied magnetic field make it a suitable candidate to mimic neuron response in a dense Neural Network (NN). The small energy consumption of the device (4-16 pJ/spike) and its scalability are important benefits for embedded applications. This compact perpendicular magnetic tunnel junction structure could finally bring spiking neural networks (SNN) to sub-100nm size elements.

Switching of magnetic tunnel junction using femto-second laser enables a possible path for THz frequency memory operation, which means writing speeds 2 orders of magnitude faster than alternative electrical approaches based on spin transfer or spin orbit torque. In this work we demonstrate successful field-free 50fs single laser pulse driven magnetization reversal of [Tb/Co] based storage layer in a perpendicular magnetic tunnel junction. The nanofabricated magnetic tunnel junction devices have an optimized bottom reference electrode and show Tunnel Magnetoresistance Ratio values (TMR) up to 74\% after patterning down to sub-100nm lateral dimensions. Experiments on continuous films reveal peculiar reversal patterns of concentric rings with opposite magnetic directions, above certain threshold fluence. These rings have been correlated to patterned device switching probability as a function of the applied laser fluence. Moreover, the magnetization reversal is independent on the duration of the laser pulse. According to our macrospin model, the underlying magnetization reversal mechanism can be attributed to an in-plane reorientation of the magnetization due to a fast reduction of the out-of-plane uniaxial anisotropy. These aspects are of great interest both for the physical understanding of the switching phenomenon and their consequences for all-optical-switching memory devices, since they allow for a large fluence operation window with high resilience to pulse length variability.

Single Pulse All Optical Helicity Independent Switching (AO-HIS) represents the ability to reverse the magnetic moment of a nanostructure using a femtosecond single laser pulse. It is an ultrafast method to manipulate magnetization without the use of any applied field. Since the first switching experiments carried on GdFeCo ferrimagnetic systems, single pulse AO-HIS has been restricted for a while to Gd-based alloys or Gd/FM bilayers where FM is a ferromagnetic layer. Only recently has AO-HIS been extended to a few other materials: MnRuGa ferrimagnetic Heusler alloys and Tb/Co multilayers with a very specific range of thickness and composition. Here, we demonstrate that single pulse AO-HIS observed in Tb/Co results from a different mechanism than the one for Gd based samples and that it can be obtained for a large range of rare earth-transition metal (RE-TM) multilayers, making this phenomenon much more general. Surprisingly, in this large family of (RE-TM) multilayer systems, the threshold fluence for switching is observed to be independent of the pulse duration, up to at least 12 ps. Moreover, at high laser intensities, concentric ring domain structures are induced, unveiling multiple fluence thresholds. These striking switching features, which are in contrast to those of AO-HIS in GdFeCo alloys, concomitant with the demonstration of an in-plane reorientation of the magnetization, point towards an intrinsic precessional reversal mechanism. Our results allow expanding the variety of materials with tunable magnetic properties that can be integrated in complex heterostructures and provide a pathway to engineer materials for future applications based on all-optical control of magnetic order.

Magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) are elementary units of magnetic memory devices. For high-speed and low-power data storage and processing applications, fast reversal by an ultrashort laser pulse is extremely important. We demonstrate optical switching of Tb/Comultilayer-based nanoscale MTJs by combining optical writing and electrical read-out methods. A 90 fs-long laser pulse switches the magnetization of the storage layer (SL). The change in magnetoresistance between the SL and a reference layer (RL) is probed electrically across the tunnel barrier. Single-shot switching is demonstrated by varying the cell diameter from 300 nm to 20 nm. The anisotropy, magnetostatic coupling, and switching probability exhibit cell-size dependence. By suitable association of laser fluence and magnetic field, successive commutation between high-resistance and low-resistance states is achieved. The switching dynamics in a continuous film is probed with the magneto-optical Kerr effect technique. Our experimental findings provide strong support for the growing interest in ultrafast spintronic devices.

This paper describes the achievements of the H2020 project INDIGO-DataCloud. The project has provided e-infrastructures with tools, applications and cloud framework enhancements to manage the demanding requirements of scientific communities, either locally or through enhanced interfaces. The middleware developed allows to federate hybrid resources, to easily write, port and run scientific applications to the cloud. In particular, we have extended existing PaaS (Platform as a Service) solutions, allowing public and private e-infrastructures, including those provided by EGI, EUDAT, and Helix Nebula, to integrate their existing services and make them available through AAI services compliant with GEANT interfederation policies, thus guaranteeing transparency and trust in the provisioning of such services. Our middleware facilitates the execution of applications using containers on Cloud and Grid based infrastructures, as well as on HPC clusters. Our developments are freely downloadable as open source components, and are already being integrated into many scientific applications.

Performing efficient resource provisioning is a fundamental aspect for any resource provider. Local Resource Management Systems (LRMS) have been used in data centers for decades in order to obtain the best usage of the resources, providing their fair usage and partitioning for the users. In contrast, current cloud schedulers are normally based on the immediate allocation of resources on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning that a request will fail if there are no resources (e.g. OpenStack) or it will be trivially queued ordered by entry time (e.g. OpenNebula). Moreover, these scheduling strategies are based on a static partitioning of the resources, meaning that existing quotas cannot be exceeded, even if there are idle resources allocated to other projects. This is a consequence of the fact that cloud instances are not associated with a maximum execution time and leads to a situation where the resources are under-utilized. These facts have been identified by the INDIGO-DataCloud project as being too simplistic for accommodating scientific workloads in an efficient way, leading to an underutilization of the resources, a non desirable situation in scientific data centers. In this work, we will present the work done in the scheduling area during the first year of the INDIGO project and the foreseen evolutions.

In this paper we describe the architecture of a Platform as a Service (PaaS) oriented to computing and data analysis. In order to clarify the choices we made, we explain the features using practical examples, applied to several known usage patterns in the area of HEP computing. The proposed architecture is devised to provide researchers with a unified view of distributed computing infrastructures, focusing in facilitating seamless access. In this respect the Platform is able to profit from the most recent developments for computing and processing large amounts of data, and to exploit current storage and preservation technologies, with the appropriate mechanisms to ensure security and privacy.
