$^3$He spin-dependent structure functions, $g^3_1(x)$ and $g^3_2(x)$, which parametrize the hadronic tensor in polarized deep-inelastic scattering, were evaluated within the Poincaré covariant light-front framework. The Bakamjian-Thomas construction of the Poincaré generators allows us to make use of a realistic $^3$He wave function, obtained from refined nuclear phenomenological potentials. The same approach was already successfully applied to the $^3$He and $^4$He unpolarized deep-inelastic scattering. To investigate the neutron polarized structure functions, $g^n_1$ and $g^n_2$, a readily implementable procedure, aimed at extracting the neutron spin structure functions from those of $^3$He, is shown to hold. Moreover, the first moment of $g^3_1(x)$ was evaluated, aiming at providing a valuable check of the Bjorken sum rule. The present analysis is relevant for experiments nvolving polarized beams planned at the future facilities, like the Electron Ion Colliders.

The light-front formalism for a covariant description of the European Muon Collaboration (EMC) effect, already applied to $^3$He, is formally extended to any nucleus, and used for actually calculating the $^3$H and $^4$He cases. The realistic and accurate nuclear description of few-nucleon bound systems, obtained with both phenomenological and chiral potentials, has been properly combined with the Poincare' covariance and macroscopic locality, automatically satisfying both number of particles and momentum sum rule. While retaining the on-mass-shell nucleon structure functions, one is then able to predict a sizable EMC effect for $^4$He, as already observed for $^3$He. Moreover, the impact on the EMC effect of both i) the short-range correlations, such as those generated by modern nuclear interactions, and ii) the ratio between the neutron and proton structure functions has been studied. The short-range correlations generated by retaining only the standard nuclear degrees of freedom act on the depth of the minimum in the EMC ratio, while the uncertainties linked to the ratio of neutron to proton structure functions are found to be very small. These light-front results facilitates ascribing deviations from experimental data due to genuine QCD effects, not included in a standard nuclear description, and initiating unbiased investigations.

This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. In summary, this document provides an exciting rationale for the energy upgrade of CEBAF to 22 GeV, outlining the transformative scientific potential that lies within reach, and the remarkable opportunities it offers for advancing our understanding of hadron physics and related fundamental phenomena.

The Bethe-Salpeter equation for a pseudoscalar bound-system, with i) a ladder kernel with massive gluons, ii) dynamically-dressed quark mass function and iii) an extended quark-gluon vertex, is solved in Minkowski space by using the Nakanishi integral representation of the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude. The quark dressing is implemented through a phenomenological ansatz, which was tuned by lattice QCD calculations of the quark running mass. The latter were also used for assigning the range of the gluon mass and the parameter featuring the extended color density. This framework allows to investigate the gluon dynamics that manifest itself in the quark dressing, quark-gluon vertex and the binding, directly in the physical space. We present the first results for low-density pseudoscalar systems in order to elucidate the onset of the interplay between the above mentioned gluonic phenomena, and we discuss both static and dynamical quantities, like valence longitudinal and transverse distributions.

The homogeneous Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) of a (1/2)$^+$ bound system, that has both fermionic and bosonic degrees of freedom, that we call a {\em mock nucleon}, is studied in Minkowski space, in order to analyse the chiral limit in covariant gauges. After adopting an interaction kernel built with a one-particle exchange, the $χ$-BSE is numerically solved by means of the Nakanishi integral representation and light-front projection. Noteworthy, the chiral limit induces a scale-invariance of the model and consequently generates a wealth of striking features: i) it reduces the number of non trivial Nakanishi weight functions to only one; ii) the form of the surviving weight function has a factorized dependence on the two relevant variables, compact and non-compact one; iii) the coupling constant becomes an explicit function of the real exponent governing the power-law fall-off of the non trivial Nakanishi weight function. The thorough investigation at large transverse-momentum of light-front Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes, obtained with massive constituents, provides a confirmation of the expected universal power-law fall-off, with exponents predicted by our non-perturbative framework. Finally, one can shed light on the exponents that govern the approach to the upper extremum of the longitudinal-momentum fraction distribution function of the {\em mock nucleon}, when the coupling constant varies.

This White Paper presents the community inputs and scientific conclusions from the Hot and Cold QCD Town Meeting that took place September 23-25, 2022 at MIT, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long Range Planning process. A total of 424 physicists registered for the meeting. The meeting highlighted progress in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) nuclear physics since the 2015 LRP (LRP15) and identified key questions and plausible paths to obtaining answers to those questions, defining priorities for our research over the coming decade. In defining the priority of outstanding physics opportunities for the future, both prospects for the short (~ 5 years) and longer term (5-10 years and beyond) are identified together with the facilities, personnel and other resources needed to maximize the discovery potential and maintain United States leadership in QCD physics worldwide. This White Paper is organized as follows: In the Executive Summary, we detail the Recommendations and Initiatives that were presented and discussed at the Town Meeting, and their supporting rationales. Section 2 highlights major progress and accomplishments of the past seven years. It is followed, in Section 3, by an overview of the physics opportunities for the immediate future, and in relation with the next QCD frontier: the EIC. Section 4 provides an overview of the physics motivations and goals associated with the EIC. Section 5 is devoted to the workforce development and support of diversity, equity and inclusion. This is followed by a dedicated section on computing in Section 6. Section 7 describes the national need for nuclear data science and the relevance to QCD research.

The unpolarized twist-2 (leading) and twist-3 (subleading), T-even, transverse-momentum dependent quark distributions in the pion are evaluated for the first time by using the actual solution of a dynamical equation in Minkowski space. The adopted theoretical framework is based on the homogeneous Bethe-Salpeter integral equation with an interaction kernel given by a one-gluon exchange, featuring an extended quark-gluon vertex. The masses of quark and gluon as well as the interaction-vertex scale have been chosen in a range suggested by lattice-QCD calculations, and calibrated to reproduce both pion mass and decay constant. The sum rules to be fulfilled by the transverse-momentum dependent distributions are carefully investigated, particularly the leading-twist one, that has to match the collinear parton distribution function, and hence can be scrutinized in terms of existing data as well as theoretical predictions. Noteworthy, the joint use of the Fock expansion of the pion state facilitates a more in-depth analysis of the content of the pion Bethe-Salpeter amplitude, allowing for the first time to determine the gluon contribution to the quark average longitudinal fraction, that results to be $\sim 6\%$. The current analysis highlights the role of the gluon exchanges through quantitative analysis of collinear and transverse-momentum distributions, showing, e.g. for both leading and subleading-twists, an early departure from the widely adopted exponential fall-off, for $|k_\perp|^2 > m^2$, with the quark mass $\sim Λ_{QCD}$.

It preserves Poincaré covariance, macroscopic locality, both number of particles and momentum sum rules. The scheme is applied to the A=3 iso-doublet, very relevant in view of the planned operation with unpolarized and polarized beams at the Electron-Ion Collider. At variance with previous light-front estimates, our procedure, including a realistic nuclear description and free-nucleon structure functions, predicts a sizeable European Muon Collaboration effect for $^3$He. This will allow to analyze deviations from the proposed baseline in terms of genuine QCD effects. The extension to heavier nuclei is straightforward, although numerically challenging.

The masses of quark and gluon as well as the interaction-vertex scale have been chosen in a range suggested by lattice QCD calculations, and calibrated to reproduce both pion mass and decay constant. Beside the full parton distribution, we have also calculated the contribution from the light-front valence wave function, corresponding to the lowest Fock component in the expansion of the pion state. After applying an evolution with an effective charge and a LO splitting function, a detailed and inspiring comparison with both the extracted experimental data ( with and without resummation effects) and other recent calculations obtained in different frameworks is presented. Interestingly, in a wide region of longitudinal-momentum fraction, the parton distribution function receives sizable contributions from the higher Fock-components of the pion state at the initial scale, while approaching the tail the light-front valence component dominates, as expected. Moreover, an exponent $\sim$ 3 is found suitable for describing the tail at the scale 5.2 GeV.

The semi-inclusive correlator for a ${\cal J}$=1/2 bound-system, composed by A spin-1/2 fermions, is linearly expressed in terms of the light-front Poincaré covariant spin-dependent spectral function, in valence approximation. The light-front spin-dependent spectral function is fully determined by six scalar functions that allow for a complete description of the six T-even transverse-momentum distributions, suitable for a detailed investigation of the dynamics inside the bound system. The application of the developed formalism to a case with a sophisticated dynamical content, like $^3$He, reaches two goals: (i) to illustrate a prototype of an investigation path for gathering a rich wealth of information on the dynamics and also finding valuable constraints to be exploited from the phenomenological standpoint; (ii) to support for the three-nucleon system a dedicated experimental effort for obtaining a detailed 3D picture in momentum space. In particular, the orbital-angular momentum decomposition of the bound state can be studied through the assessment of relations among the transverse-momentum distributions, as well as the relevance of the relativistic effect generated by the implementation of macrocausality. A fresh evaluation of the longitudinal and transverse polarizations of the neutron and proton is also provided, confirming essentially the values used in the standard procedure for extracting the neutron structure functions from both deep-inelastic scattering and semi-inclusive reactions, in the same kinematical regime.

The experiment was performed in the Hall A Facility of Jefferson Lab and used two high resolution spectrometers for electron detection, and a cryogenic target system which included a low-activity tritium cell. The data analysis used a novel technique exploiting the mirror symmetry of the two nuclei, which essentially eliminates many theoretical uncertainties in the extraction of the ratio. The results, which cover the Bjorken scaling variable range $0.19 < x < 0.83$, represent a significant improvement compared to previous SLAC and Jefferson Lab measurements for the ratio. They are compared to recent theoretical calculations and empirical determinations of the $F_2^n/F_2^p$ ratio.

How the bulk of the Universe's visible mass emerges and how it is manifest in the existence and properties of hadrons are profound questions that probe into the heart of strongly interacting matter. Paradoxically, the lightest pseudoscalar mesons appear to be the key to the further understanding of the emergent mass and structure mechanisms. These mesons, namely the pion and kaon, are the Nambu-Goldstone boson modes of QCD. Unravelling their partonic structure and the interplay between emergent and Higgs-boson mass mechanisms is a common goal of three interdependent approaches -- continuum QCD phenomenology, lattice-regularised QCD, and the global analysis of parton distributions -- linked to experimental measurements of hadron structure. Experimentally, the foreseen electron-ion collider will enable a revolution in our ability to study pion and kaon structure, accessed by scattering from the "meson cloud" of the proton through the Sullivan process. With the goal of enabling a suite of measurements that can address these questions, we examine key reactions to identify the critical detector system requirements needed to map tagged pion and kaon cross sections over a wide range of kinematics. The excellent prospects for extracting pion structure function and form factor data are shown, and similar prospects for kaon structure are discussed in the context of a worldwide programme. Successful completion of the programme outlined herein will deliver deep, far-reaching insights into the emergence of pions and kaons, their properties, and their role as QCD's Goldstone boson modes.

A dynamical model is applied to the study of the pion valence light-front wave function, obtained from the actual solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation in Minkowski space, resorting to the Nakanishi integral representation. The kernel is simplified to a ladder approximation containing constituent quarks, an effective massive gluon exchange, and the scale of the extended quark-gluon interaction vertex. These three input parameters carry the infrared scale ΛQCD and are fine-tuned to reproduce the pion weak decay constant, within a range suggested by lattice calculations. Besides fπ, we present and discuss other interesting quantities on the null-plane, like: (i) the valence probability, (ii) the dynamical functions depending upon the longitudinal or the transverse components of the light-front (LF) momentum, represented by LF-momentum distributions and distribution amplitudes, and (iii) the probability densities both in the LF-momentum space and the 3D space given by the Cartesian product of the covariant Ioffe-time and transverse coordinates, in order to perform an analysis of the dynamical features in a complementary way. The proposed analysis of the Minkowskian dynamics inside the pion, though carried out at the initial stage, qualifies the Nakanishi integral representation as an appealing effective tool, with still unexplored potentialities to be exploited for addressing correlations between dynamics and observable properties.

The last decade has seen a marked shift in how the internal structure of hadrons is understood. Modern experimental facilities, new theoretical techniques for the continuum bound-state problem and progress with lattice-regularised QCD have provided strong indications that soft quark+quark (diquark) correlations play a crucial role in hadron physics. For example, theory indicates that the appearance of such correlations is a necessary consequence of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking, viz. a corollary of emergent hadronic mass that is responsible for almost all visible mass in the universe; experiment has uncovered signals for such correlations in the flavour-separation of the proton's electromagnetic form factors; and phenomenology suggests that diquark correlations might be critical to the formation of exotic tetra- and penta-quark hadrons. A broad spectrum of such information is evaluated herein, with a view to consolidating the facts and therefrom moving toward a coherent, unified picture of hadron structure and the role that diquark correlations might play.

Positron beams, both polarized and unpolarized, are identified as essential ingredients for the experimental programs at the next generation of lepton accelerators. In the context of the hadronic physics program at Jefferson Lab (JLab), positron beams are complementary, even essential, tools for a precise understanding of the electromagnetic structure of nucleons and nuclei, in both the elastic and deep-inelastic regimes. For instance, elastic scattering of polarized and unpolarized electrons and positrons from the nucleon enables a model independent determination of its electromagnetic form factors. Also, the deeply-virtual scattering of polarized and unpolarized electrons and positrons allows unambiguous separation of the different contributions to the cross section of the lepto-production of photons and of lepton-pairs, enabling an accurate determination of the nucleons and nuclei generalized parton distributions, and providing an access to the gravitational form factors. Furthermore, positron beams offer the possibility of alternative tests of the Standard Model of particle physics through the search of a dark photon, the precise measurement of electroweak couplings, and the investigation of charged lepton flavor violation. This document discusses the perspectives of an experimental program with high duty-cycle positron beams at JLab.

The approach based on the Nakanishi integral representation of n-leg transition amplitudes is extended to the treatment of the self-energies of a fermion and an (IR-regulated) vector boson, in order to pave the way for constructing a comprehensive application of the technique to both gap- and Bethe-Salpeter equations, in Minkowski space. The achieved result, namely a 6-channel coupled system of integral equations, eventually allows one to determine the three Källén-Lehman weights for fully dressing the propagators of fermion and photon. A first consistency check is also provided. The presented formal elaboration points to embed the characteristics of the non-perturbative regime at a more fundamental level. It yields a viable tool in Minkowski space for the phenomenological investigation of strongly interacting theories, within a QFT framework where the dynamical ingredients are made transparent and under control.

An approach for a Poincaré covariant description of nuclear structure and of lepton scattering off nuclei is proposed within the relativistic Hamiltonian dynamics in the light-front form. Indeed a high level of accuracy is needed for a comparison with the increasingly precise present and future experimental data at high momentum transfer. Therefore, to distinguish genuine QCD effects or effects of medium modified nucleon structure functions from conventional nuclear structure effects, the commutation rules between the Poincaré generators should be satisfied. For the first time in this paper a proper hadronic tensor for inclusive deep inelastic scattering of electrons off nuclei is derived in the impulse approximation in terms of the single nucleon hadronic tensor. Our approach is based : i) on a light-front spectral function for nuclei, obtained taking advantage of the successful non-relativistic knowledge of nuclear interaction, and ii) on the free current operator that, if defined in the Breit reference frame with the momentum transfer, $\bf q$, parallel to the $z$ axis, fulfills Poincaré covariance and current conservation.
Our results can be generalized : i) to exclusive processes or to semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes; ii) to the case where the final state interaction is considered through a Glauber approximation; iii) to finite momentum transfer kinematics.
As a first test, the hadronic tensor is applied to obtain the nuclear structure function F$_2^A$ and to evaluate the EMC effect for $^3He$ in the Bjorken limit.
Encouraging results including only the two-body part of the light-front spectral function are presented.

The ladder Bethe-Salpeter Equation of a bound (1/2)+ system, composed by a fermion and a scalar boson, is solved in Minkowski space, for the first time. The formal tools are the same already successfully adopted for two-scalar and two-fermion systems, namely the Nakanishi integral representation of the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude and the light-front projection of the fulfilled equation. Numerical results are presented and discussed for two interaction kernels: i) a massive scalar exchange and ii) a massive vector exchange, illustrating both the correlation between binding energies and the interaction coupling constants, as well as the valence content of the interacting state, through the valence probabilities and the light-front momentum distributions. In the case of the scalar exchange, an interesting side effect, to be ascribed to the repulsion generated by the small components of the Dirac spinor, is pointed out, while for the vector exchange the manifestation of the helicity conservation opens new interesting questions to be addressed within a fully non-perturbative framework, as well as the onset of a scale-invariant regime.

The Bethe-Salpeter equation for two-body bound system with spin $1/2$ constituent is addressed directly in the Minkowski space. In order to accomplish this aim we use the Nakanishi integral representation of the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude and exploit the formal tool represented by the exact projection onto the null-plane. This formal step allows one i) to deal with end-point singularities one meets and ii) to find stable results, up to strongly relativistic regimes, that settles in strongly bound systems. We apply this technique to obtain the numerical dependence of the binding energies upon the coupling constants and the light-front amplitudes for a fermion-fermion $0^+$ state with interaction kernels, in ladder approximation, corresponding to scalar-, pseudoscalar- and vector boson exchanges, respectively. After completing the numerical survey of the previous cases, we extend our approach to a quark-antiquark system in $0^-$ state, taking both constituent-fermion and exchanged boson masses, from lattice calculations. Interestingly, the calculated light-front amplitudes for such a mock pion show peculiar signatures of the spin degrees of freedom.

Two promising directions beyond inclusive deep inelastic scattering experiments, aimed at unveiling the three dimensional structure of the bound nucleon, are reviewed, considering in particular the $^3$He nucleus. The 3D structure in coordinate space can be accessed through deep exclusive processes, whose non-perturbative part is encoded in generalized parton distributions (GPDs). In this way, the distribution of partons in the transverse plane can be obtained. As an example, coherent deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) off $^3$He nuclei, important to access the neutron GPDs, will be discussed. In Impulse Approximation (IA), the sum of two GPDs of $^3$He, $H$ and $E$, at low momentum transfer, turns out to be dominated by the neutron contribution. Besides, a technique, able to take into account the nuclear effects included in the Impulse Approximation analysis, has been developed. The spin dependent GPD $\tilde H$ of $^3$He is also found to be largely dominated, at low momentum transfer, by the neutron contribution. Semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes access the momentum space 3D structure parameterized through transverse momentum dependent parton distributions. A distorted spin-dependent spectral function has been recently introduced for $^3$He, in a non-relativistic framework, to take care of the final state interaction between the observed pion and the remnant in semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering off transversely polarized $^3$He. The calculation of the Sivers and Collins single spin asymmetries for $^3$He, and a straightforward procedure to effectively take into account nuclear dynamics and final state interactions, will be reviewed. The Light-front dynamics generalization of the analysis is also addressed.

A simple procedure is shown to be valuable for the extraction of Sivers and Collins asymmetries for the neutron fromthe corresponding asymmetries for 3He. To extend this study in a relativistic framework, a novel approach for a Poincaré covariant description of nuclear dynamics is presented, based on the light-front Hamiltonian dynamics. The key quantity is the light-front spectral function, where both normalization and momentum sum rule can be satisfied at the same time. The semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering off transversely polarized $^3$He, i.e. the process, $e + \vec{^3 {\rm He}} \to e' + h+X$, with $h$ a detected fast hadron, is studied beyond the plane wave impulse approximation. To this end, a distorted spin-dependent spectral function of a nucleon inside an A=3 nucleus is actually evaluated through a generalized eikonal approximation, in order to take into account the final state interactions between the hadronizing system and the (A-1) nucleon spectator one. Our realistic description of both nuclear target and final state is a substantial step forward for achieving a reliable extraction of the Sivers and Collins single spin asymmetries of the free neutron. To illustrate how and to what extent the model dependence due to the treatment of the nuclear effects is under control, we apply our approach to the extraction procedure of the neutron single spin asymmetries from those measured for $^3$He for values of the kinematical variables relevant both for forthcoming experiments at Jefferson Lab and, with an exploratory purpose, for the future Electron Ion Collider.

To this end, Semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SiDIS) experiments on polarized $^3$He will be carried out, providing, together with proton and deuteron data, a sound flavor decomposition of the TMDs. Given the expected high statistical accuracy, it is crucial to disentangle nuclear and partonic degrees of freedom to get an accurate theoretical description of both initial and final states. In this contribution, a preliminary study of the Final State Interaction (FSI) in the standard SiDIS, where a pion (or a Kaon) is detected in the final state is presented, in view of constructing a realistic description of the nuclear initial and final states.

Poincare' covariant definitions for the spin-dependent spectral function and for the momentum distributions within the light-front Hamiltonian dynamics are proposed for a three-fermion bound system, starting from the light-front wave function of the system. The adopted approach is based on the Bakamjian-Thomas construction of the Poincare' generators, that allows one to easily import the familiar and wide knowledge on the nuclear interaction into a light-front framework. The proposed formalism can find useful applications in refined nuclear calculations, like the ones needed for evaluating the EMC effect or the semi-inclusive deep inelastic cross sections with polarized nuclear targets, since remarkably the light-front unpolarized momentum distribution by definition fulfills both normalization and momentum sum rules. It is also shown a straightforward generalization of the definition of the light-front spectral function to an A-nucleon system.

Actual solutions of the Bethe-Salpeter equation for a two-fermion bound system are becoming available directly in Minkowski space, by virtue of a novel technique, based on the so-called Nakanishi integral representation of the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude and improved by expressing the relevant momenta through light-front components, i.e. $k^\pm=k^0 \pm k^3$. We solve a crucial problem that widens the applicability of the method to real situations by providing an analytically exact treatment of the singularities plaguing the two-fermion problem in Minkowski space, irrespective of the complexity of the irreducible Bethe-Salpeter kernel. This paves the way for feasible numerical investigations of relativistic composite systems, with any spin degrees of freedom. We present a thorough comparison with existing numerical results, evaluated in both Minkowski and Euclidean space, fully corroborating our analytical treatment, as well as fresh light-front amplitudes illustrating the potentiality of non perturbative calculations performed directly in Minkowski space.

Our analysis, on one hand, confirms the reliability of the method already applied to the ground state and, on the other one, extends the investigation from the valence distribution in momentum space to the corresponding quantity in the impact-parameter space, pointing out some relevant features, like (i) the equivalence between Minkowski and Euclidean transverse-momentum amplitudes, and (ii) the leading exponential fall-off of the valence wave function in the impact-parameter space.

The wide-angle Compton scattering polarization transfer was analyzed at an incident photon energy of 3.7~GeV at a proton scattering angle of \cma$= 70^\circ$. The longitudinal transfer \KLL, measured to be $0.645 \pm 0.059 \pm 0.048$, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic, has the same sign as predicted for the reaction mechanism in which the photon interacts with a single quark carrying the spin of the proton. However, the observed value is $\sim$3~times larger than predicted by the generalized-parton-distribution-based calculations, which indicates a significant unknown contribution to the scattering amplitude.

The Nakanishi perturbative integral representation of the four-dimensional T-matrix is investigated in order to get a workable treatment for scattering states, solutions of the inhomogeneous Bethe-Salpeter Equation, in Minkowski space. The projection onto the null-plane of the four-dimensional inhomogeneous Bethe-Salpeter Equation plays a key role for devising an equation for the Nakanishi weight function (a real function), as in the homogeneous case that corresponds to bound states and it has been already studied within different frameworks. In this paper, the whole formal development is illustrated in detail and applied to a system, composed by two massive scalars interacting through the exchange of a massive scalar. The explicit expression of the scattering integral equations are also obtained in ladder approximation, and, as simple applications of our formalism, some limiting cases, like the zero-energy limit and the Wick-Cutkosky model in the continuum, are presented.

The nucleons are described by solutions of the Dirac equation with scalar and vector (S-V) potentials. The wave function of the outgoing proton is obtained by solving the Dirac equation with a S-V optical potential fitted to elastic proton scattering data on the residual nucleus. Abstract:
A recent approach for constructing an exact 3D reduction of the 4D matrix elements of the electromagnetic current for an interacting two-fermion system, is briefly reviewed. The properties of the obtained 3D current, like the fulfillment of the Ward-Takashi Identity and its Fock decomposition, will be illustrated in relation with future applications to few-nucleon systems.

Abstract:
Longitudinal and transverse parton distributions for pion and nucleon are calculated from hadron vertexes obtained by a study of form factors within relativistic quark models. The relevance of the one-gluon-exchange dominance at short range for the behavior of the form factors at large momentum transfer and of the parton distributions at the end points is stressed.

We investigate the model dependence of no-helicity flip generalized parton distribution of the pion upon different approaches for the quark-hadron and quark-photon vertexes, in the spacelike region. In order to obtain information on contributions from both the valence and non-valence regions, we compare results for spacelike momentum transfers obtained from i) an analytic covariant model with a bare quark-photon vertex, ii) a Light-front approach with a quark-photon vertex dressed through a microscopic vector-meson model and iii) a Light-front approach based on the Relativistic Hamiltonian Dynamics. Our comparisons lead to infer the same dynamical mechanism, the one-gluon-exchange dominance at short distances, as a source of both the electromagnetic form factor at large momentum transfer and the parton distribution close to the end-points. The expected collinear behavior of the generalized parton distributions at high momentum transfer, i.e. a maximum for $x\sim 1$, is also illustrated, independently of the different approaches. Finally a comparison with recent Lattice calculations of the gravitational form factors is presented.

Some recent advances in the theoretical description of the Nucleon electromagnetic form factors, both in the space- and time-like regions, will be briefly illustrated. In particular, both the present stage of the lattice calculations and updated phenomenological approaches, like the ones based on dispersion relations and on microscopical models, will be reported.

We propose a three-dimensional electromagnetic current operator within light-front dynamics that satisfies a light-front Ward-Takahashi identity for two-fermion systems. The light-front current operator is obtained by a quasi-potential reduction of the four-dimensional current operator and acts on the light-front valence component of bound or scattering states. A relation between the light-front valence wave function and the four-dimensional Bethe-Salpeter amplitude both for bound or scattering states is also derived, such that the matrix elements of the four-dimensional current operator can be fully recovered from the corresponding light-front ones. The light-front current operator can be perturbatively calculated through a quasi-potential expansion, and the divergence of the proposed current satisfies a Ward-Takahashi identity at any given order of the expansion. In the quasi-potential expansion the instantaneous terms of the fermion propagator are accounted for by the effective interaction and two-body currents. We exemplify our theoretical construction in the Yukawa model in the ladder approximation, investigating in detail the current operator at the lowest nontrivial order of the quasi-potential expansion of the Bethe-Salpeter equation. The explicit realization of the light-front form of the Ward-Takahashi identity is verified. We also show the relevance of instantaneous terms and of the pair contribution to the two-body current and the Ward-Takahashi identity.

For the first time, a phenomenological analysis of the experimental electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon, both in the timelike and spacelike regions, is performed by taking into account the effects of nonvalence components in the nucleon state, within a light-front framework. Our model, based on suitable Ansatzes for the nucleon Bethe-Salpeter amplitude and a microscopic version of the well-known Vector Meson Dominance model, has only four free parameters (determined by the spacelike data with $χ^2/datum \sim 1.7$), and yields a nice description of the experimental electromagnetic form factors in the physical region in the range $-30 (GeV/c)^2 < q^2 < 20 (GeV/c)^2$, except for the neutron one in the timelike region. Valuable information can be gained in the timelike region on possible missing Vector Mesons around $q^2 \sim 4.5 (GeV/c)^2$ and $q^2 \sim 8.0 (GeV/c)^2$

We carefully investigate the reliability of the propagator Pole Approximation, i.e, the approximation of retaining only the propagator in the evaluation of the Mandelstam covariant expression for the eletromagnetic current of the pion. Different frames are analyzed, in order to find the most suitable one for calculating the pion form factor within the proposed approximation. It turns out that approximation is more accurate in the frame where q^+ is maximal. The relevance of the Pole Approximation is briefly discussed in view of calculations of hadrons factors basead wave functions generate by dynamical models.
