Using the improved U(1) and SU(2) slave-boson approaches of the t-J Hamiltonian that we developed recently, we study the do** and temperature dependence of superfluid weight and spectral function and discuss our finding of the universal scaling behavior of pseudogap. It is shown that at low hole do** concentrations and at low temperatures there exists a propensity of a linear decrease in the superfluid weight with temperature, and a tendency of do** independence in the linearly decreasing slopes of the superfluid weight with temperature in qualitative agreement with the experiments. It is also demonstrated that there exists the boomerang behavior, that is, both Tc and the superfluid weight increase with hole do** concentration x in the underdoped region, reaches a saturation(maximum) at a hole do** above optimal do** and decreases beyond the saturation point in the overdoped region in agreement with mu-SR measurements. We further investigate the do** and temperature dependence of spectral function and discuss our theoretical finding of a scaling behavior of pseudogap. In addition we discuss the cause of hump and quasi-particle peak in the observed spectral functions of high Tc cuprates. It is demonstrated that the sharpening of the observed quasi-particle peak below Tc is attributed to the bose condensation of holon pair in agreement with observations. From the predicted ratios of pseudogap to both the superconducting temperature Tc and the pseudogap temperature T* respectively as a function of hole do** concentration x, we find that there exists a universal scaling behavior (sample independence) of these ratios with do**, by showing a nonlinearly decreasing behavior of the former and a near do** independence of the latter.

Finally we demonstrate that there exists no time-reversal symmetry breaking in association with the Cooper pair order parameter.

We examine the role of both the gauge field fluctuations and spin pair excitations on the w/T scaling behavior of the optical conductivity. It is shown that the gauge field fluctuations but not the spin pair excitations are responsible for the scaling behavior in the low frequency region w/T <<1. Importance for the contribution of the nodal spinons to the Drude peak is discussed. It is shown that the w/T scaling behavior is manifest in the low frequency region at low hole concentrations close to a critical concentration at which superconductivity arises at T=0K.

Using the U(1) holon pair slave boson theory [Phys. Rev. B 64, 052501 2001)], we derive a low energy field theory of dealing with both d-wave superconductivity and antiferromagnetism for underdoped cuprates by constructing both the Cooper pair field and the chargon pair field. In terms of the internal gauge field, the Cooper pair field carries no internal charge while the chargon pair field carries the internal charge. They are decoupled in the low energy limit. This allows us to separately treat the XY model of the Cooper pair field to describe superconductivity and the Abelian Higgs model of the chargon pair field to describe antiferromagnetism in the presence of Dirac fermions at and near the d-wave nodal points. Thus we find that the d-wave superconductivity can coexist with antiferromagnetism and that despite the coexistence, the antiferromagnetism can not affect the superconducting transition, thus allowing the XY universality class in the extreme type II limit.

We investigate the role of fluctuations of both the phase and amplitude of order parameters on the (Drude) peak-dip-hump structure in the in-plane conductivity as a function of hole do** concentration and temperature. The mid-infrared(MIR) hump in the in-plane optical conductivity is shown to originate from the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations of short range(the amplitude fluctuations of spin singlet pairing order parameters), which is consistent with our previous U(1) study. However the inclusion of both the phase and amplitude fluctuations is shown to substantially improve the qualitative feature of the optical conductivity by showing substantially reduced Drude peak widths for entire do** range. Both the shift of the hump position to lower frequency and the growth of the hump peak height with increasing hole concentration is shown to be consistent with observations.

B {\bf 64}, 052501(2001)], in this paper we present a full exposure to the theory, detailed physical implications and predicted various physical properties of high $T_c$ cuprates. We discuss the significance of coupling (interplay) between the spin and charge degrees of freedom in the Heisenberg interaction term of the t-J Hamiltonian. We discuss its importance in causing the arch-shaped superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ and the pseudogap (spin gap) temperature $T^*$ tangential to $T_c$ in the overdoped region in the observed phase diagram of high $T_c$ cuprates. A universal parabolic scaling behavior of $T^*/T_c$ (or $T_c/T^*$) with hole do** concentration is predicted in agreement with observations, indicating that there exists correlation between the pseudogap (spin gap) phase and the superconducting phase through antiferromagnetic fluctuations. Our proposed holon-pair boson theory is shown to be self-consistent in that it not only yields the arch (dome) shape structure of $T_c$ but also reproduces various other physical properties such as superfluid weight, bose condensation energy, spectral function, optical conductivity and spin susceptibility, including their temperature and do** dependence.

Using the improved slave-boson approach of the t-J Hamiltonian [Phys. Rev. B 64, 052501 (2001)] that we developed recently, we report the hole do** and temperature dependence of the superfluid weight. It is shown that at low hole do** concentration x and at low temperatures T there exists a propensity of a linear decrease of the superfluid weight $n_s/m^*$ with temperature, and a tendency of do** independence in the slope of $\frac{n_s}{m^*}(x,T)$ vs. T in accordance of the relation $\frac{n_s}{m^*}(x,T) = \frac{n_s}{m^*}(x,0) - αT$ with $α$, a constant. It is also demonstrated that Tc increases with hole do** concentration x, reaches a saturation(maximum) at optimal do** and decreases with increasing $x$ and $n_s/m^*$ in the overdoped region. Such a reflex (decreasing) behavior of Tc is attributed to the weakening of coupling between the spin(spinon pair order) and charge(holon pair order) degrees of freedom in the overdoped region. All of these findings are in agreement with $μ$SR measurements.

We show that the phase diagram obtained from the Maxwell's construction in the plane of temperature vs. hole density is consistent with one derived from the evaluation of hole-rich and electron-rich phases in real space. We observe that the formation of a hole-rich phase is attributed to the aggregation of hole pairs induced by spin singlet pairs present in the pseudogap phase and that a direct involvement of correlations between hole pairs are not essential for phase separation.

This is consistent with other numerical studies of hole-doped two dimensional antiferromagnets. The phase separation in the physically interesting J region, $0 < J/t \lesssim 0.4$ is examined by introducing hole-hole (holon-holon) repulsive interaction. We find from this study that with high repulsive interaction between holes the phase separation boundary tends to remain robust in this low $J$ region, while in the high J region, J/t > 0.4, the phase separation boundary tends to disappear.

We present functional Schrödinger representations of Holstein-Primakoff boson and slave-boson theories for the Heisenberg Hamiltonian and the $t-J$ Hamiltonian respectively. Based on these representations we obtain the dispersion relations of magnons for two dimensional antiferromagnets. By applying the functional Schrödinger representation of the Holstein-Primakoff boson theory to the Heisenberg Hamiltonian, the exchange energy is correctly predicted and the self-energy of quasi-hole is obtained. From the use of the functional Schrödinger representation of the $t-J$ Hamiltonian it is shown that at half-filling the dispersion relation obtained from the slave-boson theory leads to that obtained from the Holstein-Primakoff boson approach.

For this study we apply the Lanczos exact diagonalization method to Holstein-Hubbard, Holstein-$tJ$, and Holstein-$tJ_z$ models in order to reveal various aspects of geometric phases. We demonstrate that transverse spin fluctuations are responsible for the generation of nontrivial geometric phases. From the exchange symmetry of polarons we find that the statistical transmutation of polarons occurs depending on the strength of electron correlations.

We find from the exact diagonalization calculations that the second-order phase transition (metamagnetism) occurs through a spin-flop process as an intermediate step.

Considering interacting (antiferromagnetically correlated) electrons, we derive a generalized Harper's equation for the square lattice of infinite size. We obtain an analytic expression for the density of states from the newly derived Harper's equation. We present a predicted phase diagram of staggered magnetization in the plane of temperature vs do** rate and discover a possibility of reentrant behavior of the staggered magnetization even in the presence of applied magnetic field. It is shown that below a critical electron correlation strength (Coulomb repulsion) the staggered magnetization in the presence of magnetic field vanishes at an even denominator $q$ value but not at odd $q$ of a given magnetic flux quantum per plaquette, $p/q$.

We show from the investigation of free energy that holon pair condensation can occur as a result of symmetry breaking. In addition, we introduce a possibility of supersymmetry condition at $T=0K$ in the intermediate region between the antiferromagnetic phase and the superconducting phase.

Abstract:
Mean field and exact diagonalization studies on the quasiparticle excitation of an SO(5) symmetric two-leg ladder system are reported. It is shown that the energy gap in the quasiparticle excitation is caused by the formation of rung singlet states. We find that shadow peaks can occur above the Fermi surface with antiferromagnetic electron correlations involving only rungs in the spin ladder.

By allowing the spin degrees of freedom, we present a generalized spin allowed $U(1)\times U(1)$ Chern-Simons theory of fractional quantum Hall effects for odd and even denominator filling factors in single layers. This theory is shown to reproduce all possible odd denominator filling factors corresponding to spin-unpolarized, partially polarized, and fully polarized fractional quantum Hall states. Closely following our earlier theory, we derive the formal expressions of electromagnetic polarization tensors and Hall conductivity for the spin-unpolarized and partially polarized fractional quantum Hall states. Finally we report the computed spectra of collective excitations for both the even and odd denominator filling factors for which Kohn's theorem is satisfied.

Unlike an earlier theory, by avoiding both the electromagnetic gauge field shift and the assumption of the zero average of electromagnetic field fluctuation the fermion Chern-Simons gauge theory is reformulated to obtain mean field solutions and a self-consistent expression of the electromagnetic polarization tensor in terms of the composite fermion picture for the systems of fractional quantum Hall effect. Thus the newly derived electromagnetic polarization tensor is shown to depend on the residual (effective) magnetic field `seen' by composite fermions rather than the statistical field, which differs from the earlier theory. The present theory reproduces the Hall conductance of fractional quantum Hall effect. The self-consistent picture of the composite fermion is maintained in all of our derivations: both the mean field solutions and the electromagnetic polarization tensor are described by the residual magnetic field seen by the composite fermions.

It is demonstrated that minima in the antiferromagnetic strength exist at the the even integer denominator values of rational number for magnetic flux per plaquette. The undulatory behavior of antiferromagnetic strength with the external magnetic field is found. It is seen to be related to the undulatory net statistical phase owing to the influence of the applied magnetic field.
