We perform exact Statistical Mechanics calculations for a system of elongated objects (hard needles) that are restricted to translate along a line and rotate within a plane, and that interact via both excluded-volume steric repulsion and harmonic elastic forces between neighbors. This system represents a one-dimensional model of a liquid crystal elastomer, and has a zero-tension critical point that we describe using the transfer-matrix method. In the absence of elastic interactions, we build on previous results by Kantor and Kardar, and find that the nematic order parameter $Q$ decays linearly with tension $σ$. In the presence of elastic interactions, the system exhibits a standard universal scaling form, with $Q / |σ|$ being a function of the rescaled elastic energy constant $k / |σ|^Δ$, where $Δ$ is a critical exponent equal to $2$ for this model. At zero tension, simple scaling arguments lead to the asymptotic behavior $Q \sim k^{1/Δ}$, which does not depend on the equilibrium distance of the springs in this model.

At the mean-field level, we show the existence of para-magnetic lines of transition to a region of modulated (helimagnetic) structures. We then turn to the analysis of the analogous problem on a Cayley tree. Taking into account the simplicity introduced by the infinite-coordination limit of the tree, we explore several details of the phase diagrams in terms of temperature and a parameter of competition. In particular, we characterize sequences of modulated (helical) structures associated with devil's staircases of a fractal character.

It is possible to observe uniform and periodic structures, depending on temperature and a parameter of chirality. We find many different chiral nematic phases, and point out the effects of temperature and chirality on the modulation associated with these structures.

We perform statistical mechanics calculations to analyze the global phase diagram of a fully-connected version of a Maier-Saupe-Zwanzig lattice model with the inclusion of couplings to an elastic strain field. We point out the presence of uniaxial and biaxial nematic structures, depending on temperature $T$ and on the applied stress $σ$. Under uniaxial extensive tension, applied stress favors uniaxial orientation, and we obtain a first-order boundary, along which there is a coexistence of two uniaxial paranematic phases, and which ends at a simple critical point. Under uniaxial compressive tension, stress favors biaxial orientation; for small values of the coupling parameters, the first-order boundary ends at a tricritical point, beyond which there is a continuous transition between a paranematic and a biaxially ordered structure. For some representative choices of the model parameters, we obtain a number of analytic results, including the location of critical and tricritical points and the line of stability of the biaxial phase.

We investigate the connections between some simple Maier-Saupe lattice models, with a discrete choice of orientations of the microscopic directors, and a recent proposal of a two-tensor formalism to describe the phase diagrams of nematic liquid-crystalline systems. This two-tensor proposal is used to formulate the statistical problem in terms of fully-connected lattice Hamiltonians, with the local nematic directors restricted to the Cartesian axes. Depending on the choice of interaction parameters, we regain all of the main features of the original mean-field two-tensor calculations. With a standard choice of parameters, we obtain the well-known sequence of isotropic, uniaxial, and biaxial nematic structures, with a Landau multicritical point. With another suitably chosen set of parameters, we obtain two tricritical points, according to some recent predictions of the two-tensor calculations. The simple statistical lattice models are quite easy to work with, for all values of parameters, and the present calculations can be carried out beyond the mean-field level.

We then revisit Nagle's original solution, as well as the usual formulation of the problem in a canonical ensemble, which lead to the same results. Also, in contrast to recent claims, we show that an alternative formulation in the microcanonical ensemble, with the adequate choice of the fixed thermodynamic extensive variables, leads to equivalent thermodynamic results.

We show that these claims of inequivalence are related to an inadequate definition of the independent (density) variables in the microcanonical ensemble. We illustrate this point with the example of a simple spin-1 ideal paramagnet, and then revisit the original calculations of Barré, Mukamel, and Ruffo, for a mean-field spin-1 Blume-Capel model. If the microcanonical ensemble is defined in terms of adequate density variables, we show that there is no disagreement with the calculations in the usual canonical ensemble (with fixed thermodynamic field variables).

We investigate the phase diagram of a spin-$1/2$ Ising model on a cubic lattice, with competing interactions between nearest and next-nearest neighbors along an axial direction, and fully connected spins on the sites of each perpendicular layer. The problem is formulated in terms of a set of noninteracting Ising chains in a position-dependent field. At low temperatures, as in the standard mean-feild version of the Axial-Next-Nearest-Neighbor Ising (ANNNI) model, there are many distinct spatially commensurate phases that spring from a multiphase point of infinitely degenerate ground states. As temperature increases, we confirm the existence of a branching mechanism associated with the onset of higher-order commensurate phases. We check that the ferromagnetic phase undergoes a first-order transition to the modulated phases. Depending on a parameter of competition, the wave number of the striped patterns locks in rational values, giving rise to a devil's staircase. We numerically calculate the Hausdorff dimension $D_{0}$ associated with these fractal structures, and show that $D_{0}$ increases with temperature but seems to reach a limiting value smaller than $D_{0}=1$.

We use an infinite-range Maier-Saupe model, with two sets of local quadrupolar variables and restricted orientations, to investigate the global phase diagram of a coupled system of two nematic subsystems. The free energy and the equations of state are exactly calculated by standard techniques of statistical mechanics. The nematic-isotropic transition temperature of system A increases with both the interaction energy among mesogens of system B, and the two-subsystem coupling $J$. This enhancement of the nematic phase is manifested in a global phase diagram in terms of the interaction parameters and the temperature $T$. We make some comments on the connections of these results with experimental findings for a system of diluted ferroelectric nanoparticles embedded in a nematic liquid-crystalline environment.

In the T=0 phase diagram, there is a critical border, $g_{c}=g_{c}(p) $ for $d\geq2$, with a singularity at the Lifshitz point if $d<(m+4)/2$. If the disorder degrees of freedom are quenched, we confirm the existence of a biaxial nematic strucure. If orientational and disorder degrees of freedom are allowed to thermalize, this biaxial solution becomes thermodynamically unstable. We use standard techniques of statistical mechanics to obtain analytic solutions for the full range of parameters. Among other results, we show the existence of a stress-strain coexistence curve below a freezing temperature, analogous to the P-V diagram of a simple fluid, with the disorder strength playing the role of temperature. Below a critical value of disorder, the tie lines in this diagram resemble the experimental stress-strain plateau, and may be interpreted as signatures of the characteristic polydomain-monodomain transition. Also, in the monodomain case, we show that random-fields may soften the first-order transition between nematic and isotropic phases, provided the samples are formed in the nematic state.

Solutions of this problem on a Bethe lattice come from the analysis of the fixed points of a set of nonlinear recursion relations. Besides the fixed points associated with isotropic and uniaxial nematic structures, there is also a fixed point associated with a biaxial nematic structure. Due to the existence of large overlaps of the stability regions, we resorted to a scheme to calculate the free energy of these structures deep in the interior of a large Cayley tree. For simple forms of disorder, the model is analytically tractable and displays some new features. At either constant stress or constant strain, there is a non monotonic increase of the fraction of broken fibers as a function of temperature. Moreover, the same values of some macroscopic quantities as stress and strain may correspond to different microscopic cofigurations, which can be essential for determining the thermal activation time of the fracture. We argue that different microscopic states may be characterized by an experimentally accessible analog of the Edwards-Anderson parameter. Introducing a global order parameter, in the replica-symmetric context, the problem is reduced to the analysis of the solutions of a nonlinear integral equation. At zero temperature, and under some restrictions on the form of the random fields, we are able to perform a detailed analysis of stability of the replica-symmetric solutions. In contrast to the behaviour of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model for a spin glass in a uniform field, the paramagnetic solution is fully stable in a sufficiently large random field.

We investigate the effects of aperiodic interactions on the critical behavior of an interacting two-polymer model on hierarchical lattices (equivalent to the Migadal-Kadanoff approximation for the model on Bravais lattices), via renormalization-group and tranfer-matrix calculations. The exact renormalization-group recursion relations always present a symmetric fixed point, associated with the critical behavior of the underlying uniform model. If the aperiodic interactions, defined by s ubstitution rules, lead to relevant geometric fluctuations, this fixed point becomes fully unstable, giving rise to novel attractors of different nature. We present an explicit example in which this new attractor is a two-cycle, with critical indices different from the uniform model. In case of the four-letter Rudin-Shapiro substitution rule, we find a surprising closed curve whose points are attractors of period two, associated with a marginal operator. Nevertheless, a scaling analysis indicates that this attractor may lead to a new critical universality class. In order to provide an independent confirmation of the scaling results, we turn to a direct thermodynamic calculation of the specific-heat exponent. The thermodynamic free energy is obtained from a transfer matrix formalism, which had been previously introduced for spin systems, and is now extended to the two-polymer model with aperiodic interactions.

The model assumes the existence of uncompensated magnetic moments induced in the odd-sized segments generated along the Mn(^{2+}) chains upon dilution. These moments are further assumed to correlate ferromagnetically after removal of a cooling field. Using a (mean-field) linear-chain approximation and reasonable set of model parameters, we are able to reproduce the approximate linear temperature dependence observed for the remanent magnetization in the real compounds.

Using a weak-disorder scheme and real-space renormalization-group techniques, we obtain analytical results for the critical behavior of various q-state Potts models with correlated disordered exchange interactions along d1 of d spatial dimensions on hierarchical (Migdal-Kadanoff) lattices. Our results indicate qualitative differences between the cases d-d1=1 (for which we find nonphysical random fixed points, suggesting the existence of nonperturbative fixed distributions) and d-d1>1 (for which we do find acceptable perturbartive random fixed points), in agreement with previous numerical calculations by Andelman and Aharony. We also rederive a criterion for relevance of correlated disorder, which generalizes the usual Harris criterion.

We review and extend some recent investigations of the effects of aperiodic interactions on the critical behavior of ferromagnetic $q$-state Potts models. By considering suitable diamond or necklace hierarchical lattices, and assuming a distribution of interactions according to a class of two-letter substitution rules, the problem can be formulated in terms of recursion relations in parameter space. The analysis of stability of the fixed points leads to an exact criterion to gauge the relevance of geometric fluctuations. For irrelevant fluctuations, the critical behavior remains unchanged with respect to the uniform systems. For relevant fluctuations, there appears a two-cycle of saddle-point character in parameter space. A scaling analysis, supported by direct numerical thermodynamic calculations, shows the existence of novel critical universality classes associated with relevant geometric fluctuations. Also, we show that similar qualitative results are displayed by a simple model of two directed polymers on a diamond hierarchical structure with aperiodic bond interactions.

We use a mixed-spin model, with aperiodic ferromagnetic exchange interactions and crystalline fields, to investigate the effects of deterministic geometric fluctuations on first-order transitions and tricritical phenomena. The interactions and the crystal field parameters are distributed according to some two-letter substitution rules. From a Migdal-Kadanoff real-space renormalization-group calculation, which turns out to be exact on a suitable hierarchical lattice, we show that the effects of aperiodicity are qualitatively similar for tricritical and simple critical behaviour. In particular, the fixed point associated with tricritical behaviour becomes fully unstable beyond a certain threshold dimension (which depends on the aperiodicity), and is replaced by a two-cycle that controls a weakened and temperature-depressed tricritical singularity.

We investigate the effects of geometric fluctuations, associated with aperiodic exchange interactions, on the critical behavior of $q$-state ferromagnetic Potts models on generalized diamond hierarchical lattices. For layered exchange interactions according to some two-letter substitutional sequences, and irrelevant geometric fluctuations, the exact recursion relations in parameter space display a non-trivial diagonal fixed point that governs the universal critical behavior. For relevant fluctuations, this fixed point becomes fully unstable, and we show the apperance of a two-cycle which is associated with a novel critical behavior. We use scaling arguments to calculate the critical exponent $α$ of the specific heat, which turns out to be different from the value for the uniform case. We check the scaling predictions by a direct numerical analysis of the singularity of the thermodynamic free-energy. The agreement between scaling and direct calculations is excellent for stronger singularities (large values of $q$). The critical exponents do not depend on the strengths of the exchange interactions.
