We study the Raman response, for $B_{1g}$ and $B_{2g}$ light-polarization symmetries, of the charge density wave phase appearing in the underdoped region of cuprate superconductors. We show that the $B_{2g}$ response provides a distinctive signature of the charge order, independently of the details of the electronic structure and from the concomitant presence of a pseudogap, in sharp contrast with the behavior of the $B_{1g}$ response. This well accounts for the Raman experimental results. We then clearly identify a charge density wave energy scale, and show that its do** dependence is eventually driven by the monotonic behavior of the pesudogap. This has also been pointed out in Raman experiments, and it is suggestive of a pseudogap ruling the multiple energy scales of the exotic phases appearing in the cuprate phase diagram.

However, since a structural transition accompanies the SI transition, deciphering the role of electronic and lattice degrees of freedom in driving the SI transition has remained controversial. Here, we investigate the photoexcited nonequilibrium state in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ using pump-probe Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies. The combined nonequilibrium spectroscopic measurements of the lattice and electronic states reveal the presence of a photoexcited metastable state where the insulating gap is suppressed, but the low-temperature structural distortion is preserved. We conclude that electron correlations play a vital role in the SI transition of Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$.

We followed step by step the transition from an antiferromagnetic (AF) Mott insulator to a superconducting (SC) metal in the Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212) cuprate using the electronic Raman scattering spectroscopy. This was achieved by tracking the do** dependence of the spin singlet excitation originate from the AF Mott insulator, the normal state quasiparticles excitation related to the mobile charge carriers and the Bogoliubov quasiparticles related to the SC gap. We show that the signature of the pseudogap phase which develops during this transition, can be interpreted as the blocking of charge carriers by the enhancement of the antiferromagnetic correlations as the temperature drops. We find that the energy scale of the pseudogap, $Δ_{\textrm{pg}}(p)$, closely follows the one of the spin singlet excitation, $Δ_{\textrm{sse}}(p)$, with do** $p$. The quasiparticles lifetime considerably increases with do** when the pseudogap collapses. We reveal that the maximum amplitude of the SC gap, $Δ_{\textrm{sc}}^{\textrm{max}}$ and the SC transition temperature \Tc are linked in an extended range of do** such as $Δ_{\textrm{sc}}^{\textrm{max}}(p) \propto Δ_{\textrm{sse}}(p)\, T_c(p)$. This relation suggests that the AF correlations play a key role in the mechanism of superconductivity.

Anisotropic strain is an external field capable of selectively addressing the role of nematic fluctuations in promoting superconductivity. We demonstrate this using polarization-resolved elasto-Raman scattering to probe the evolution of nematic fluctuations under strain in the normal and superconducting states of the paradigmatic iron-based superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$. In the non-superconducting parent compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$ we observe a strain-induced suppression of the nematic susceptibility which follows the expected behavior of an Ising order parameter under a symmetry breaking field. For the superconducting compound, the suppression of the nematic susceptibility correlates with the decrease of the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$. Our results indicate a significant contribution of nematic fluctuations to electron pairing and validate theoretical scenarios of enhanced $T_c$ near a nematic quantum critical point.

We report a Raman scattering study of nematic degrees of freedom in the iron-based superconductor parent compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$ under tunable uniaxial strain. We demonstrate that the polarization resolved arsenic (As) phonon intensity can be used to monitor the nematic order parameter as a function of both temperature and strain. At low temperature in the nematic ordered phase we use it to track the continuous and reversible orientation of nematic domains under variable strain. At higher temperature, the evolution of the As phonon intensity under strain reflects an enhanced nematic susceptibility close to the nematic transition $T_S$. Its temperature dependence under strong strain follows qualitatively the expected behavior of an Ising order parameter under a symmetry breaking field. Our elasto-Raman study illustrates the interest of combining selective anisotropic strain with a symmetry resolved probe like Raman scattering. Elasto-Raman scattering can be applied to a wide variety of quantum materials where uniaxial strain tunes electronic orders.

We report a polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy study of the orbital dependence of the quasiparticles properties in the prototypical multi-band Fermi liquid Sr\textsubscript{2}RuO\textsubscript{4}. We show that the quasiparticle scattering rate displays $ω^{2}$ dependence as expected for a Fermi liquid. Besides, we observe a clear polarization-dependence in the energy and temperature dependence of the quasiparticle scattering rate and mass, with the $d_{xz/yz}$ orbital derived quasiparticles showing significantly more robust Fermi liquid properties than the $d_{xy}$ orbital derived ones. The observed orbital dichotomy of the quasiparticles is consistent with the picture of Sr\textsubscript{2}RuO\textsubscript{4} as a Hund's metal. Our study establishes Raman scattering as a powerful probe of Fermi liquid properties in correlated metals.

The superconducting phase of the $\mathrm{HgBa}_2\mathrm{CuO}_{4+δ}$ (Hg-1201) and $\mathrm{HgBa}_2\mathrm{Ca}_2\mathrm{Cu}_3\mathrm{O}_{8+δ}$ (Hg-1223) cuprates has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy under hydrostatic pressure. Our analysis reveals that the increase of $T_c$ with pressure is slower in Hg-1223 cuprate compared to the Hg-1201 due to a charge carrier concentration imbalance (accentuated by pressure) between the $\mathrm{CuO}_2$ layers of Hg-1223. We find that the energy variation under pressure of the apical oxygen mode from which the charge carriers are transferred to the $\mathrm{CuO}_2$ layers, is the same for both the Hg-1223 and Hg-1223 cuprates and it is controlled by the inter-layer compressibility. At last, we show that the binding energy of the Cooper pairs related to the maximum amplitude of the $d-$ wave superconducting gap at the anti-nodes, does not follow $T_c$ with pressure. It decreases while $T_c$ increases. In the particular case of Hg-1201, the binding energy collapses from 10 to 2 $K_B T_c$ as the pressure increases up to 10 GPa. These direct spectroscopic observations joined to the fact that the binding energy of the Cooper pairs at the anti-nodes does not follow $T_c$ either with do**, raises the question of its link with the pseudogap energy scale which follows the same trend with do**.

The sound velocities of the (quasi)-longitudinal and of the two (quasi)-transverse acoustic waves along three independent directions of the (110) surface have been measured. Moreover, one surface wave and one longitudinal wave propagating perpendicular to the surface have been detected. Based on initial input values of the six independent Cij elastic constants determined by our density functional theory calculations and our eleven experimental velocities, the numerical resolution of the acoustic equations allows to determine all the Cij elastic constants of BFO. The propagation direction dependence of volume and surface waves phase velocities allows the unambiguously assignment of the waves, hence the polarization of phonons.

We report the evolution of nematic fluctuations in FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ single crystals as a function of Sulfur content $x$ across the nematic quantum critical point (QCP) $x_c\sim$ 0.17 via Raman scattering. The Raman spectra in the $B_{1g}$ nematic channel consist of two components, but only the low energy one displays clear fingerprints of critical behavior and is attributed to itinerant carriers. Curie-Weiss analysis of the associated nematic susceptibility indicates a substantial effect of nemato-elastic coupling which shifts the location of the nematic QCP. We argue that this lattice-induced shift likely explains the absence of any enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature at the QCP. The presence of two components in the nematic fluctuations spectrum is attributed to the dual aspect of electronic degrees of freedom in Hund's metals, with both itinerant carriers and local moments contributing to the nematic susceptibility.

Two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) can form at the surface of oxides and semiconductors or in carefully designed quantum wells and interfaces. Depending on the shape of the confining potential, 2DEGs may experience a finite electric field, which gives rise to relativistic effects such as the Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Although the amplitude of this electric field can be modulated by an external gate voltage, which in turn tunes the 2DEG carrier density, sheet resistance and other related properties, this modulation is volatile. Here, we report the design of a ''ferroelectric'' 2DEG whose transport properties can be electrostatically switched in a non-volatile way. We generate a 2DEG by depositing a thin Al layer onto a SrTiO$_3$ single crystal in which 1 percent of Sr is substituted by Ca to make it ferroelectric. Signatures of the ferroelectric phase transition at 25 K are visible in the Raman response and in the temperature dependences of the carrier density and sheet resistance that shows a hysteretic dependence on electric field as a consequence of ferroelectricity. We suggest that this behavior may be extended to other oxide 2DEGs, leading to novel types of ferromagnet-free spintronic architectures.

Establishing the presence and the nature of a quantum critical point in their phase diagram is a central enigma of the high-temperature superconducting cuprates. It could explain their pseudogap and strange metal phases, and ultimately their high superconducting temperatures. Yet, while solid evidences exist in several unconventional superconductors of ubiquitous critical fluctuations associated to a quantum critical point, in the cuprates they remain undetected until now. Here using symmetry-resolved electronic Raman scattering in the cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$, we report the observation of enhanced electronic nematic fluctuations near the endpoint of the pseudogap phase. While our data hint at the possible presence of an incipient nematic quantum critical point, the do** dependence of the nematic fluctuations deviates significantly from a canonical quantum critical scenario. The observed nematic instability rather appears to be tied to the presence of a van Hove singularity in the band structure.

The magnetoelectric coupling, i.e., cross-correlation between electric and magnetic orders, is a very desirable property to combine functionalities of materials for next-generation switchable devices. Multiferroics with spin-driven ferroelectricity presents such a mutual interaction concomitant with magneto- and electro-active excitations called electromagnons. TbMnO3 is a paradigmatic material in which two electromagnons have been observed in the cycloidal magnetic phase. However, their observation in TbMnO3 is restricted to the cycloidal spin phase and magnetic ground states that can support the electromagnon excitation are still under debate. Here, we show by performing Raman spectroscopy measurements under pressure that the lower-energy electromagnon (4 meV) disappears when the ground state enters from a cycloidal phase to an antiferromagnetic phase (E-type). On the contrary, the magnetoelectric activity of the higher-energy electromagnon (8 meV) increases in intensity by one order of magnitude. Using microscopic model calculations, we demonstrate that the lowerenergy electromagnon, observed in the cycloidal phase, originates from a higher harmonic of the magnetic cycloid, and we determine that the symmetric exchange-striction mechanism is at the origin of the higher-energy electromagnon which survives even in the E-type phase. The colossal enhancement of the electromagnon activity in TbMnO3 paves the way to use multiferroics more efficiently for generation, conversion and control of spin waves in magnonic devices.

The quadruple Calcium manganite (CaMn7O12) is a multiferroic material that exhibits a giant magnetically-induced ferroelectric polarization which makes it very interesting for magnetoelectric applications. Here, we report the Raman spectroscopy study on this compound of both the phonon modes and the low energy excitations from 4 K to room temperature. A detailed study of the Raman active phonon excitations shows that three phonon modes evidence a spin-phonon coupling at TN2 = 50 K. In particular, we show that the mode at 432 cm-1 associated to Mn(B)O6 (B position of the perovskite) rotations around the [111] cubic diagonal is impacted by the magnetic transition at 50 K and its coupling to the new modulation of the Mn spin in the (a,b) plane. At low energies, two large low energy excitations are observed at 25 and 47 cm-1. The first one disappears at 50 K and the second one at 90 K. We have associated these excitations to electro-magneto-active modes.

We used Raman scattering to study the lattice and magnetic excitations in the hexagonal HoMnO3 single crystals. The E2 phonon mode at 237 cm-1 is affected by the magnetic order. This mode is related to the displacement of Mn and O ions in a-b plane and modulates the Mn-O-Mn bond angles in a-b plane and the in-plane Mn-Mn superexchange interaction. The mode at 269 cm-1 associated to the displacement of the apical Ho3+ ions along the c direction presents an abrupt change of slope at TN showing that the role of the rare earth ions can not be neglected in the magnetic transition. We have identified magnon and crystal field excitations. The temperature dependence of the magnetic excitations has been compared to the Mn and Ho moment and indicates that the exchange interaction pattern between Mn and Ho atoms drives the uniaxial anisotropy gap above the Mn-spin-rotation transition.

The cuprate high temperature superconductors develop spontaneous charge density wave (CDW) order below a temperature $T_{CDW}$ and over a wide range of hole do** (p). An outstanding challenge in the field is to understand whether this modulated phase is related to the more exhaustively studied pseudogap and superconducting phases. To address this issue it is important to extract the energy scale $Δ_{CDW}$ associated with the charge modulations, and to compare it with the pseudogap (PG) $Δ_{PG}$ and the superconducting gap $Δ_{SC}$. However, while $T_{CDW}$ is well-characterized from earlier works little has been known about $Δ_{CDW}$ until now. Here, we report the extraction of $Δ_{CDW}$ for several cuprates using electronic Raman spectroscopy. Crucially, we find that, upon approaching the parent Mott state by lowering $p$, $Δ_{CDW}$ increases in a manner similar to the do** dependence of $Δ_{PG}$ and $Δ_{SC}$. This shows that CDW is an unconventional order, and that the above three phases are controlled by the same electronic correlations. In addition, we find that $Δ_{CDW} \approx Δ_{SC}$ over a substantial do** range, which is suggestive of an approximate emergent symmetry connecting the charge modulated phase with superconductivity.

These single crystals are unique with very high quality surface paving the way for spectroscopic, transport and thermodynamic probes in order to understand the hole-doped cuprate phase diagram. The superconductivity transition width of about 2 K indicates they are homogeneous. Annealing allows to optimize Tc up to Tc$^{max}$ = 133 K. We show for the first time that with adequate heat treatment, Hg-1223 can be largely under-doped and its do** level controlled. The pressure evolution of the Raman active electronic excitations of the transition metal dichalcogenides 2H-TaS$_2$ is followed through the pressure phase diagram embedding incommensurate charge-density-wave and superconducting states. At high pressure, the charge-density-wave is found to collapse at 8.5~GPa. In the coexisting charge-density-wave and superconducting orders, we unravel a strong in-gap superconducting mode, attributed to a Higgs mode, coexisting with the expected incoherent Cooper-pair breaking signature. The latter remains in the pure superconducting state reached above 8.5~GPa. Our report constitutes the first observation of such Raman active Higgs mode since the longstanding unique case 2H-NbSe$_2$.

We show that the ERS continuum is dominated by interband chiral excitations of $A_{2}$ symmetry and displays a characteristic Pauli-blocking behavior similar to the monolayer case. Crucially, we show that non-chiral excitations make a vanishing contribution to the Raman cross-section due to destructive interference effects in the Raman amplitude matrix elements. This is in a marked contrast to optical absorption measurements and opens interesting venues for the use of Raman scattering as a selective probe of chiral degrees of freedom in topological matter and other 2D crystals.

A polarized electronic Raman scattering study reveals the emergence of symmetry dependence in the electronic Raman response of single crystalline URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ below the Kondo crossover scale $T_K\sim100K$. In particular, the development of a coherent Kondo pseudo-gap predominantly in the E$_g$ channel highlights strong anisotropy in the Kondo physics in URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ that has previously been neglected in theoretical models of this system. A calculation of the Raman vertices demonstrates that the strongest Raman vertex does indeed develop within the E$_g$ channel for interband transitions and reaches a maximum along the diagonals of the Brillouin zone, implying a d-wave-like geometry for the Kondo pseudo-gap. Below the hidden order phase transition at $T_{HO}= 17.5K$, the magnitude of the pseudo-gap is found to be enhanced. Moreover, the anisotropy of the pseudo-gap is similar in form to that proposed for the chiral d-wave (E$_g$) superconducting state that appears below $T_c=1.5K$.

Using both techniques we find that, unlike the superconducting gap, the pseudogap related to the anti-bonding band vanishes above the critical do** p$_c$ = 0.22. Concomitantly, we show from ARPES measurements that the Fermi surface of the anti-bonding band is hole-like below pc and becomes electron-like above p$_c$. We report the evolution of the electronic nematic susceptibility in FeSe via Raman scattering as a function of hydrostatic pressure up to 5.8 GPa where the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ reaches its maximum. The critical nematic fluctuations observed at low pressure vanish above 1.6 GPa, indicating they play a marginal role in the four-fold enhancement of $T_{c}$ at higher pressures. The collapse of nematic fluctuations appears to be linked to a suppression of low energy electronic excitations which manifests itself by optical phonon anomalies at around 2 GPa, in agreement with lattice dynamical and electronic structure calculations using local density approximation combined with dynamical mean field theory. Our results reveal two different regimes of nematicity in the phase diagram of FeSe under pressure: a d-wave Pomeranchuk instability of the Fermi surface at low pressure and a magnetic driven orthorhombic distortion at higher pressure.

Despite being usually considered two competing phenomena, charge-density-wave and superconductivity coexist in few systems, the most emblematic one being the transition metal dichalcogenide 2H-NbSe$_2$. This unusual condition is responsible for specific Raman signatures across the two phase transitions in this compound. While the appearance of a soft phonon mode is a well-established fingerprint of the charge-density-wave order, the nature of the sharp sub-gap mode emerging below the superconducting temperature is still under debate. In this work we use the external pressure as a knob to unveil the delicate interplay between the two orders, and consequently the nature of the superconducting mode. Thanks to an advanced extreme-conditions Raman technique we are able to follow the pressure evolution and the simultaneous collapse of the two intertwined charge density wave and superconducting modes. The comparison with microscopic calculations in a model system supports the Higgs-type nature of the superconducting mode and suggests that charge-density-wave and superconductivity in 2H-NbSe$_2$ involve mutual electronic degrees of freedom. These findings fill knowledge gap on the electronic mechanisms at play in transition metal dichalcogenides, a crucial step to fully exploit their properties in few-layers systems optimized for devices applications.

The spontaneous appearance of nematicity, a state of matter that breaks rotation but not translation symmetry, is one of the most intriguing property of the iron based superconductors (Fe SC), and has relevance for the cuprates as well. Establishing the critical electronic modes behind nematicity remains however a challenge, because their associated susceptibilities are not easily accessible by conventional probes. Here using FeSe as a model system, and symmetry resolved electronic Raman scattering as a probe, we unravel the presence of critical charge nematic fluctuations near the structural / nematic transition temperature, T$_S\sim$ 90 K. The diverging behavior of the associated nematic susceptibility foretells the presence of a Pomeranchuk instability of the Fermi surface with d-wave symmetry. The excellent scaling between the observed nematic susceptibility and elastic modulus data demonstrates that the structural distortion is driven by this d-wave Pomeranchuk transition. Our results make a strong case for charge induced nematicity in FeSe.

The evolution of the electronic Raman scattering spectra with gate voltage and its polarization dependence are in full agreement with theoretical expectations for non-resonant Raman processes involving interband electron-hole excitations across the Dirac cone. Our main finding is that the superconducting pair-breaking peak is associated with a dip on its higher-energy side, disappearing together at Tc. This result hints at an unconventional pairing mechanism, whereas spectral weight lost in the dip is transferred to the pair-breaking peak at lower energies. This conclusion is supported by cellular dynamical mean-field theory on the Hubbard model, which is able to reproduce all the main features of the B1g Raman response and explain the peak-dip behavior in terms of a nontrivial relationship between the superconducting and the pseudo gaps.

Optical spectroscopy has been combined with computational and theoretical techniques to show how the spin dynamics in the model multiferroic BiFeO3 responds to the application of hydrostatic pressure and its corresponding series of structural phase transitions from R3c to the Pnma phases. As pressure increases, multiple spin excitations associated with non-collinear cycloidal magnetism collapse into two excitations, which show jump discontinuities at some of the ensuing crystal phase transitions. Effective Hamiltonian approach provides information on the electrical polarization and structural changes of the oxygen octahedra through the successive structural phases. The extracted parameters are then used in a Ginzburg-Landau model to reproduce the evolution with pressure of the spin waves excitations observed at low energy and we demonstrate that the structural phases and the magnetic anisotropy drive and control the spin excitations.

Electronic Raman scattering with in and out of (ab) plane polarizations have been performed on HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8+d in a slightly underdoped single crystal with a critical temperature Tc=122 K. We find that the d-wave pairing gap at the antinodes is higher in energy (14 kBTc) than in other cuprates and that it varies very slowly up to Tc. This hints at a strong coupling nature of the pairing mechanism. Interestingly, we reveal that the pairing-gap feature in the Raman response displays a complex peak-dip-hump structure, in a fashion reminiscent of what observed by angle resolved photo-emission spectroscopy in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Bi-2212). We detect two other distinct superconducting peaks at 5kBTc and 7kBTc when probing respectively around the nodes and on the whole Fermi surface. Finally we establish that the pairing gap at the antinodes is detected both for (ab) plane and for c-axis light polarizations. This shows that the quasiparticle dynamics along the c-axis is intimately connected to the antinodal one in the (ab) plane.

We discuss the possible existence a spin singlet excitation with charge $\pm2$ ($η$-mode) originating the $A_{1g}$ Raman resonance in cuprate superconductors. This $η$-mode relates the $d$-wave superconducting singlet pairing channel to a $d$-wave charge channel. We show that the $η$ boson forms a particle-particle bound state below the $2Δ$ threshold of the particle-hole continuum where $Δ$ is the maximum $d$-wave gap. Within a generalized random phase approximation and Bethe-Salpether approximation study, we find that this mode has energies similar to the resonance observed by Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS) below the superconducting (SC) coherent peak at $2Δ$ in various SC cuprates compounds. We show that it is a very good candidate for the resonance observed in Raman scattering below the $2Δ$ peak in the $A_{1g}$ symmetry. Since the $η$-mode sits in the $S=0$ channel, it may be observable via Raman, X -ray or Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy probes.

We report a comprehensive investigation of the lattice dynamics of URu$_2$Si$_2$ as a function of temperature using Raman scattering, optical conductivity and inelastic neutron scattering measurements as well as theoretical {\it ab initio} calculations. The main effects on the optical phonon modes are related to Kondo physics. The B$_{1g}$ ($Γ_3$ symmetry) phonon mode slightly softens below $\sim$100~K, in connection with the previously reported softening of the elastic constant, $C_{11}-C_{12}$, of the same symmetry, both observations suggesting a B$_{1g}$ symmetry-breaking instability in the Kondo regime. Through optical conductivity, we detect clear signatures of strong electron-phonon coupling, with temperature dependent spectral weight and Fano line shape of some phonon modes. Surprisingly, the line shapes of two phonon modes, E$_u$(1) and A$_{2u}$(2), show opposite temperature dependencies. The A$_{2u}$(2) mode loses its Fano shape below 150 K, whereas the E$_u$(1) mode acquires it below 100~K, in the Kondo cross-over regime. This may point out to momentum-dependent Kondo physics. By inelastic neutron scattering measurements, we have drawn the full dispersion of the phonon modes between 300~K and 2~K. No remarkable temperature dependence has been obtained including through the hidden order transition. {\it Ab initio} calculations with the spin-orbit coupling are in good agreement with the data except for a few low energy branches with propagation in the (a,b) plane.

We have performed polarized electronic Raman scattering on URu2Si2 single crystals at low temperature down to 8 K in the hidden order state and under magnetic field up to 10 T. The hidden order state is characterized by a sharp excitation at 1.7 meV and a gap in the electronic continuum below 6.8 meV. Both Raman signatures are of pure A2g symmetry. By comparing the behavior of the Raman sharp excitation and the neutron resonance at Q0=(0,0,1), we provide new evidence, constrained by selection rules of the two probes, that the hidden order state breaks the translational symmetry along the c axis such that Gamma and Z points fold on top of each other. The observation of these distinct Raman features with a peculiar A2g symmetry as a signature of the hidden order phase places strong constraints on current theories of the hidden order in URu2Si2.

We report a fine tuned do** study of strongly overdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ single crystals using electronic Raman scattering. Combined with theoretical calculations, we show that the do**, at which the normal state pseudogap closes, coincides with a Lifshitz quantum phase transition where the active hole-like Fermi surface becomes electron-like. This conclusion suggests that the microscopic cause of the pseudogap is sensitive to the Fermi surface topology. Furthermore, we find that the superconducting transition temperature is unaffected by this transition, demonstrating that their origins are different on the overdoped side.

We used Raman and terahertz spectroscopies to investigate lattice and magnetic excitations and their cross-coupling in the hexagonal YMnO3 multiferroic. Two phonon modes are strongly affected by the magnetic order. Magnon excitations have been identified thanks to comparison with neutron measurements and spin wave calculations but no electromagnon has been observed. In addition, we evidenced two additional Raman active peaks. We have compared this observation with the anti-crossing between magnon and acoustic phonon branches measured by neutron. These optical measurements underly the unusual strong spin-phonon coupling.

We report electronic Raman scattering measurements of Sr(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals in their magnetic - Spin Density Wave (SDW) phase. The spectra display multiple, polarization-resolved SDW gaps as expected in a band-folding itinerant picture for a multiband system. The temperature dependence of the SDW gaps reveals an unusual evolution of the reconstructed electronic structure with at least one gap being activated only well below the magnetic SDW transition $T_N$. A comparison with temperature dependent Hall measurements allows us to assign this activated behavior to a change in the Fermi surface topology deep in the SDW phase, which we attribute to the disappearance of a hole-like Fermi pocket. Our results highlight the strong sensitivity of the low energy electronic structure to temperature in iron-arsenide superconductors.

We report experimental evidences for the observation of the superconducting amplitude mode, so-called `Higgs' mode in the charge density wave superconductor 2H-NbSe2 using Raman scattering. By comparing 2H-NbSe2 and its iso-structural partner 2H-NbS2 which shows superconductivity but lacks the charge density wave order, we demonstrate that the superconducting mode in 2H-NbSe2 owes its spectral weight to the presence of the coexisting charge density wave order. In addition, temperature dependent measurements in 2H-NbSe2 show a full spectral weight transfer from the charge density wave mode to the superconducting mode upon entering the superconducting phase. Both observations are fully consistent with a superconducting amplitude mode or Higgs mode.

The strong enhancement of the Raman response at low temperatures unveils an underlying charge nematic state that extends to superconducting compositions and which has hitherto remained unnoticed. Comparison between the extracted charge nematic susceptibility and the elastic modulus allows us to disentangle the charge contribution to the nematic instability, and to show that charge nematic fluctuations are weakly coupled to the lattice.

Lattice and spin excitations have been studied by Raman scattering in hexagonal YbMnO3 single crystals. The temperature dependences of the phonon modes show that the E2 mode at 256 cm-1 related to the displacement of Mn and O ions in a-b plane is coupled to the spin order. The A1 phonon mode at 678 cm-1 presents a soft mode behavior at the Neel temperature. Connected to the motion of the apical oxygen ions along the c direction, this mode controls directly the Mn-Mn interactions between adjacent Mn planes and the superexchange path. Crystal field and magnon mode excitations have been identified. The temperature investigation of the spin excitations shows that the spin structure is strongly influence by the Yb-Mn interaction. Under a magnetic field along the c axis, we have investigated the magnetic reordering and its impact on the spin excitations.

We present Raman experiments on underdoped and overdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+d) (Bi-2212) single crystals. We reveal the pseudogap in the electronic Raman spectra in the B1g and B2g geometries. In these geometries we probe respectively, the antinodal (AN) and nodal (N) regions corresponding to the principal axes and the diagonal of the Brillouin zone. The pseudogap appears in underdoped regime and manifests itself in the B1g spectra by a strong depletion of the low energy electronic continuum as the temperature decreases. We define a temperature T* below which the depletion appears and the pseudogap energy, omegaPG the energy at which the depeletion closes.
The pseudogap is also present in the B2g spectra but the depletion opens at higher energy than in the B1g spectra. We observe the creation of new electronic states inside the depletion as we enter the superconducting phase. This leads us to conclude (as proposed by S. Sakai et al.) that the pseudogap has a different structure than the superconducting gap and competes with it. We show that the nodal quasiparticle dynamic is very robust and almost insensitive to the pseudogap phase contrary to the antinodal quasiparticle dynamic. We finally reveal, in contrast to what it is usually admitted,an increase of the nodal quasiparticle spectral weight with underdo**. We interpret this result as the consequence of a possible Fermi surface disturbances in the do** range p=0.1-0.2.

We have performed Raman measurements on TbMnO3 single crystal under magnetic field along the three crystallographic directions. The flip of the spin spiral plane creates an electromagnon excitation. In addition to the electromagnons induced by the Heisenberg coupling, we have detected the electromagnon created by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction along the c axis. We have identified all the vibrational modes of TbMnO3. Their temperature dependences show that only one phonon observed along the polarization axis is sensitive to the ferroelectric transition. This mode is tied to the Tb3+ ion displacements that contribute to the ferroelectric polarization.
