Extracting the partonic structure of colorless exchanges at the Electron Ion Collider

Abstract: We investigate the determination of the partonic structure of colorless exchanges in deep inelastic diffractive $ep$ scattering at the Electron Ion Collider, using the standard decomposition into Pomeron and Reggeon contributions. A measurement of jet cross sections in the laboratory frame was made in a fiducial region corresponding to photon virtuality $10 \;\mathrm{GeV}^2 < Q^2 < 350 \;\mathrm{GeV}^2$, inelasticity $0.04 < y < 0.7$, outgoing lepton energy $E_e > 10 \;\mathrm{GeV}$, lepton polar angle $140^\circ < θ_e < 180^\circ$, jet transverse momentum $2.5 \;\mathrm{GeV} < p_\mathrm{T,jet} < 30 \;\mathrm{GeV}$, and jet pseudorapidity $-1.5 < η_\mathrm{jet} < 1.8$. Jets were reconstructed using the $k_\mathrm{T}$ algorithm with the radius parameter $R = 1$. The leading jet in an event is defined as the jet that carries the highest $p_\mathrm{T,jet}$. Differential cross sections, $dσ/dΔφ$, were measured as a function of the azimuthal correlation angle in various ranges of leading-jet transverse momentum, photon virtuality and jet multiplicity. Perturbative calculations at $\mathcal{O}(α_{s}^2)$ accuracy successfully describe the data within the fiducial region, although a lower level of agreement is observed near $Δφ\rightarrow π$ for events with high jet multiplicity, due to limitations of the perturbative approach in describing soft phenomena in QCD. The data are equally well described by Monte Carlo predictions that supplement leading-order matrix elements with parton showering. △ Less

The measurement has been used in a next-to-next-to-leading-order QCD analysis to perform a simultaneous determination of parton distribution functions of the proton and the strong coupling, resulting in a value of $α_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1142 \pm 0.0017~\text{(experimental/fit)}$ ${}^{+0.0006}_{-0.0007}~\text{(model/parameterisation)}$ ${}^{+0.0006}_{-0.0004}~\text{(scale)}$, whose accuracy is improved compared to similar measurements. Diffractive longitudinal structure function at the Electron Ion Collider

Abstract: Possibilities for the measurement of the longitudinal structure function in diffraction $F_\mathrm{L}^\mathrm{D}$ at the future US Electron Ion Collider are investigated. The sensitivity to $F_\mathrm{L}^\mathrm{D}$ arises from the variation of the reduced diffractive cross section with centre-of-mass energy. Simulations are performed with various sets of beam energy combinations and for different… ▽ More Possibilities for the measurement of the longitudinal structure function in diffraction $F_\mathrm{L}^\mathrm{D}$ at the future US Electron Ion Collider are investigated. The sensitivity to $F_\mathrm{L}^\mathrm{D}$ arises from the variation of the reduced diffractive cross section with centre-of-mass energy. Simulations are performed with various sets of beam energy combinations and for different assumptions on the precision of the diffractive cross section measurements. Scenarios compatible with current EIC performance expectations lead to an unprecedented precision on $F_\mathrm{L}^\mathrm{D}$ at the 5-10 % level in the best measured regions. While scenarios with data at a larger number of centre-of-mass energies allow the extraction of $F_\mathrm{L}^\mathrm{D}$ in the widest kinematic domain and with the smallest uncertainties, even the more conservative assumptions lead to precise measurements. The ratio $R^\mathrm{D}$ of photoabsorption cross sections for longitudinally to transversely polarised photons can also be obtained with high precision using a separate extraction method. △ Less

The PDF sets of HERAPDF2.0Jets NNLO were determined with separate fits using two fixed values of $α_s(M_Z^2)$, $α_s(M_Z^2)=0.1155$ and $0.118$, since the latter value was already chosen for the published HERAPDF2.0 NNLO analysis based on HERA inclusive DIS data only. The different sets of PDFs are presented, evaluated and compared. The consistency of the PDFs determined with and without the jet data demonstrates the consistency of HERA inclusive and jet-production cross-section data. The inclusion of the jet data reduced the uncertainty on the gluon PDF. Predictions based on the PDFs of HERAPDF2.0Jets NNLO give an excellent description of the jet-production data used as input. △ Less

The dependence of two-particle correlations on the virtuality of the exchanged photon shows a clear transition from photoproduction to neutral current deep inelastic scattering. For the multiplicities studied, neither the measurements in photoproduction processes nor those in neutral current deep inelastic scattering indicate significant collective behaviour of the kind observed in high-multiplicity hadronic collisions at RHIC and the LHC. Comparisons of PYTHIA predictions with the measurements in photoproduction strongly indicate the presence of multiparton interactions from hadronic fluctuations of the exchanged photon. △ Less

The EIC will be a powerful new high-luminosity facility in the United States with the capability to collide high-energy electron beams with high-energy proton and ion beams, providing access to those regions in the nucleon… ▽ More This report describes the physics case, the resulting detector requirements, and the evolving detector concepts for the experimental program at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The EIC will be a powerful new high-luminosity facility in the United States with the capability to collide high-energy electron beams with high-energy proton and ion beams, providing access to those regions in the nucleon and nuclei where their structure is dominated by gluons. Moreover, polarized beams in the EIC will give unprecedented access to the spatial and spin structure of the proton, neutron, and light ions. The studies leading to this document were commissioned and organized by the EIC User Group with the objective of advancing the state and detail of the physics program and develo** detector concepts that meet the emerging requirements in preparation for the realization of the EIC. The effort aims to provide the basis for further development of concepts for experimental equipment best suited for the science needs, including the importance of two complementary detectors and interaction regions. This report consists of three volumes. Volume I is an executive summary of our findings and developed concepts. In Volume II we describe studies of a wide range of physics measurements and the emerging requirements on detector acceptance and performance. Volume III discusses general-purpose detector concepts and the underlying technologies to meet the physics requirements. The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent el… ▽ More The Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) is designed to move the field of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the energy and intensity frontier of particle physics. Exploiting energy recovery technology, it collides a novel, intense electron beam with a proton or ion beam from the High Luminosity--Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent electron-proton and proton-proton operation. This report represents an update of the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) of the LHeC, published in 2012. It comprises new results on parton structure of the proton and heavier nuclei, QCD dynamics, electroweak and top-quark physics. It is shown how the LHeC will open a new chapter of nuclear particle physics in extending the accessible kinematic range in lepton-nucleus scattering by several orders of magnitude. Due to enhanced luminosity, large energy and the cleanliness of the hadronic final states, the LHeC has a strong Higgs physics programme and its own discovery potential for new physics. Building on the 2012 CDR, the report represents a detailed updated design of the energy recovery electron linac (ERL) including new lattice, magnet, superconducting radio frequency technology and further components. Challenges of energy recovery are described and the lower energy, high current, 3-turn ERL facility, PERLE at Orsay, is presented which uses the LHeC characteristics serving as a development facility for the design and operation of the LHeC. An updated detector design is presented corresponding to the acceptance, resolution and calibration goals which arise from the Higgs and parton density function physics programmes. The paper also presents novel results on the Future Circular Collider in electron-hadron mode, FCC-eh, which utilises the same ERL technology to further extend the reach of DIS to even higher centre-of-mass energies. △ Less

Inclusive diffraction in future electron-proton and electron-ion colliders

Abstract: We analyse the possibilities for the study of inclusive diffraction offered by future electron--proton/nucleus colliders in the TeV regime, the Large Hadron-electron Collider as an upgrade of the HL-LHC and the Future Circular Collider in electron-hadron mode. Compared to $ep$ collisions at HERA, we find an extension of the available kinematic range in $x$ by a factor of order $20$ and of the maxi… ▽ More We analyse the possibilities for the study of inclusive diffraction offered by future electron--proton/nucleus colliders in the TeV regime, the Large Hadron-electron Collider as an upgrade of the HL-LHC and the Future Circular Collider in electron-hadron mode. Compared to $ep$ collisions at HERA, we find an extension of the available kinematic range in $x$ by a factor of order $20$ and of the maximum $Q^2$ by a factor of order $100$ for LHeC, while the FCC version would extend the coverage by a further order of magnitude both in $x$ and $Q^2$. This translates into a range of available momentum fraction of the diffractive exchange with respect to the hadron ($ξ$), down to $10^{-4}-10^{-5}$ for a wide range of the momentum fraction of the parton with respect to the diffractive exchange ($β$). Using the same framework and methodology employed in previous studies at HERA, considering only the experimental uncertainties and not those stemming from the functional form of the initial conditions or other ones of theoretical origin, and under very conservative assumptions for the luminosities and systematic errors, we find an improvement in the extraction of diffractive parton densities from fits to reduced cross sections for inclusive coherent diffraction in $ep$ by about an order of magnitude. For $eA$, we also perform the simulations for the Electron Ion Collider. We find that an extraction of the currently unmeasured nuclear diffractive parton densities is possible with similar accuracy to that in $ep$. △ Less

It incorporates experimental data from a wide range of experiments including fixed-target, Tevatron, HERA, and LHC. xFitter can analyze this data up to next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) in perturbation theory with a variety of theoretical calculations including numerous methodological options for carrying out PDF fits and plotting tools which help visualize the results. While primarily based on the collinear factorization foundation, xFitter also provides facilities for fits of dipole models and transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) PDFs. The package can be used to study the impact of new precise measurements from hadron colliders, and also assess the impact of future colliders. Evidence of quasi-partonic higher-twist effects in deep inelastic scattering at HERA at moderate $Q^2$

Abstract: The combined HERA data for the inclusive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) cross sections for the momentum transfer $Q^2 > 1$ GeV$^2$ are fitted within the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (DGLAP) framework at next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) accuracy, complemented by a QCD-inspired parameterisation of twist 4 corrections. A modified form of the input pa… ▽ More The combined HERA data for the inclusive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) cross sections for the momentum transfer $Q^2 > 1$ GeV$^2$ are fitted within the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (DGLAP) framework at next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) accuracy, complemented by a QCD-inspired parameterisation of twist 4 corrections. A modified form of the input parton density functions is also included, motivated by parton saturation mechanism at small Bjorken $x$ and at a low scale. These modifications lead to a significant improvement of the data description in the region of low $Q^2$. For the whole data sample, the new benchmark NNLO DGLAP fit yields $χ^2$ / d.o.f. $\simeq 1.2$ to be compared to 1.5 resulting from the standard NNLO DGLAP fit. We discuss the results in the context of the parton saturation picture and describe the impact of the higher-twist corrections on the derived parton density functions. The resulting description of the longitudinal proton structure function $F_L$ is consistent with the HERA data. Our estimates of higher-twist contributions to the proton structure functions are comparable to the leading-twist contributions at low $Q^2 \simeq 2$ GeV$^2$ and $x \simeq 10^{-5}$. The $x$-dependence of the twist 4 corrections obtained from the best fit is consistent with the leading twist 4 quasi-partonic operators, corresponding to an exchange of four interacting gluons in the $t$-channel. △ Less

Abstract: HERAFitter is an open-source package that provides a framework for the determination of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton and for many different kinds of analyses in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). It encodes results from a wide range of experimental measurements in lepton-proton deep inelastic scattering and proton-proton (proton-antiproton) collisions at hadron colliders. Thes… ▽ More HERAFitter is an open-source package that provides a framework for the determination of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton and for many different kinds of analyses in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). It encodes results from a wide range of experimental measurements in lepton-proton deep inelastic scattering and proton-proton (proton-antiproton) collisions at hadron colliders. These are complemented with a variety of theoretical options for calculating PDF-dependent cross section predictions corresponding to the measurements. The framework covers a large number of the existing methods and schemes used for PDF determination. The data and theoretical predictions are brought together through numerous methodological options for carrying out PDF fits and plotting tools to help visualise the results. While primarily based on the approach of collinear factorisation, HERAFitter also provides facilities for fits of dipole models and transverse-momentum dependent PDFs. The elasticity of the events was ensured by a cut on eta_max < 3.0, where eta_max is the maximum pseudorapidity of energy deposits in the calorimeter defined with respect to the proton beam direction. A signal was observed at the Z0 mass. The cross section of the reaction ep -> eZ0p* was measured to be sigma(ep -> eZ0p*) = 0.13 +/- 0.06 (stat.) +/- 0.01 (syst.) pb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 0.16 pb. General Mass Scheme for Jet Production in DIS

Measurements of the ratios of cross sections using different jet algorithms are also presented; the measured ratios are well described by calculations including up to O(alphas2) terms. Values of alphas(Mz) were extracted from the measurements and the energy-scale dependence of the coupling was determined. The value of alphas(Mz) extracted from the measurements based on the kT jet algorithm is alphas(Mz) = 0.1206 +0.0023 -0.0022 (exp.) +0.0042 -0.0035 (th.); the results from the anti-kT and SIScone algorithms are compatible with this value and have a similar precision. △ Less

At low Q2 and at large energy the data exhibit a strong excess, up to about 100%, above the twist 2 NLO DGLAP description. The excess in consistent with higher twist effects. It is found, that complementing the DGLAP fit by twist 4 and 6 components of the GBW saturation model leads to a good description of data at low Q2. We conclude that the DDIS at HERA provides the first, strong evidence of higher twist effects in DIS. △ Less

The two-pion invariant-mass distribution is interpreted in terms of the pion electromagnetic form factor, |F(Mππ)|, assuming that the studied mass range includes the contributions of the ρ, ρ' and ρ" vector-meson states. The masses and widths of the resonances were obtained and the Q2 dependence of the cross-section ratios σ(ρ' \rightarrow ππ)/σ(ρ) and σ(ρ" \rightarrow ππ)/σ(ρ) was extracted. No evidence for top production was found, consistent with the expectation from the Standard Model. Limits were computed for single-top production via flavour changing neutral current transitions. Clear scaling violations are observed. Predictions based on different approaches to fragmentation were compared to the measurements. Leading-logarithm parton-shower Monte Carlo calculations interfaced to the Lund string fragmentation model describe the data reasonably well in the whole range measured. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations based on fragmentation functions, FFs, extracted from e+e- data alone, fail to describe the measurements. The calculations based on FFs extracted from a global analysis including e+e-, ep and pp data give an improved description. The measurements presented in this paper have the potential to further constrain the FFs of quarks, anti-quarks and gluons yielding K0s and Lambda/bar Lambda strange hadrons. △ Less
