In this paper, we present experimental results and numerical simulations of trident production, $e^-\rightarrow e^-e^+e^-$, in a strong electromagnetic field. The experiment was conducted at CERN for the purpose of probing the strong-field parameter $χ$ up to 2.4, using a 200 GeV electron beam penetrating a 400 $μ$m thick germanium crystal oriented along the $\langle 110\rangle$ axis. For the current experimental parameters we found that the trident process is primarily a two-step process, and show remarkable agreement between theoretical predictions and experimental data. This paper is an extension of the previously published paper (Phys. Rev. Lett. 130, 071601 (2023)) and features new analysis differential in the energy of the produced positron and electron in the trident process. Even for the more demanding differential analysis, we find good agreement between theoretical predictions and experimental data, while a slight discrepancy is found in the high energy tail of the trident spectrum. This discrepancy could be an indication of the direct process, but further investigation is needed due to the large uncertainties in this part of the spectrum. Finally we present a suggestion for a future experiment, aiming to probe the direct process using thin crystals.

An accelerated charged particle emits electromagnetic radiation. If the driving force is sufficiently strong, the radiated energy becomes comparable to the kinetic energy of the particle and the back-action of the emitted radiation (radiation reaction) significantly alters the dynamics of the particle. The Landau-Lifshitz (LL) equation has been proposed as the classical equation to describe the dynamics of a charged particle in a strong electromagnetic field when the effects of radiation reaction are taken into account. Hitherto, the experimental problem in validating the LL equation has been to achieve sufficiently strong fields for radiation reaction to be important without quantum effects being prominent. Notwithstanding, here we provide a quantitative experimental test of the LL equation by measuring the emission spectrum for a wide range of settings for 50 GeV positrons crossing aligned silicon single crystals near the $(110)$ planar channeling regime as well as 40 GeV and 80 GeV electrons traversing aligned diamond single crystals near the $\langle100\rangle$ axial channeling regime. The experimental spectra are in remarkable agreement with predictions based on the LL equation of motion with small quantum corrections for recoil and, in case of electrons, spin and reduced radiation emission, as well as with a more elaborate quantum mechanical model. Our experiment clearly shows the inadequacy of the Lorentz force as the sole agent of force on the particles in the classical limit, due to its absence of radiative energy loss in describing the dynamics of high-energy charged particles in strong electromagnetic fields like those in aligned single crystals.

We report on experimental spectra of photons radiated by 50 GeV positrons crossing silicon single crystals of thicknesses 1.1 mm, 2.0 mm, 4.2 mm, and 6.2 mm at sufficiently small angles to the (110) planes that their motion effectively is governed by the continuum crystal potential. The experiment covers a new regime of interaction where each positron emits several hard photons, whose recoil are not negligible and which are formed on lengths where the variation of the crystal field cannot be ignored. As a result neither the single-photon semiclassical theory of Baier et al. nor the conventional cascade approach to multiple hard photon emissions (quantum radiation reaction) based on the local constant field approximation are able to reproduce the experimental results. After develo** a theoretical scheme which incorporates the essential physical features of the experiments, i.e., multiple emissions, photon recoil and background field variation within the radiation formation length, we show that it provides results in convincing agreement with the data.

In this paper, we provide a procedure to calculate the bremsstrahlung spectrum for virtually any relativistic bare ion with charge 6$e$ or beyond, $Z\ge 6$, in ultraperipheral collisions with target nuclei. We apply the Weizsäcker-Williams method of virtual quanta to model the effect of the distribution of nuclear constituents on the interaction of the ion with the radiation target. This leads to a bremsstrahlung spectrum peaking at $2γ$ times the energy of the giant dipole resonance ($γ$ is the projectile energy in units of its rest energy). A central ingredient in the calculation is the cross section for elastic scattering of photons on the ion. This is only available in the literature for a few selected nuclei and, usually, only in a rather restricted parameter range. Hence we develop a procedure applicable for all $Z\geq6$ to estimate the elastic scattering. The elastic cross section is obtained at low to moderate photon energies, somewhat beyond the giant dipole resonance, by means of the optical theorem, a dispersion relation, and data on the total absorption cross section. The cross section is continued at higher energies by invoking depletion due to loss of coherence in the scattering. Our procedure is intended for any ion where absorption data is available and for moderate to high energies, $γ\gtrsim 10$.

With nuclear charges of $Ze$ equal $208$ and $18$ respectively, these ions are accelerated to energies of $7$ TeV$\times Z $. The bremsstrahlung peaks around $\approx 100$ GeV and the spectrum exposes the nuclear structure of the incoming ion. The peak structure is significantly different from the flat power spectrum pertaining to a point charge. Photons are predominantly emitted within an angle of $1/γ$ to the direction of ion propagation. Our calculations are based on the Weizsäcker-Williams method of virtual quanta with application of existing experimental data on photonuclear interactions.
