Exponential decay of the critical points in a discrete model of polyacetylene
Abstract: In this paper we consider stationary states of the SSH model for infinite polyacetylene chains that are homoclinic or heteroclinic connections between two-periodic dimerized states. We prove that such connections converge exponentially fast to the corresponding asymptotic periodic states.

Existence of minimizers for the Dirac-Fock model of crystals
Abstract: Whereas many different models exist in the mathematical and physics literature for ground states of non-relativistic crystals, the relativistic case has been much less studied and we are not aware of any mathematical result on a fully relativistic treatment of crystals. In this paper, we introduce a mean-field relativistic energy for crystals in terms of periodic density matrices. This model is in… ▽ More

A new definition of the Dirac-Fock ground state
Abstract: The Dirac-Fock (DF) model replaces the Hartree-Fock (HF) approximation in quantum chemistry when relativistic effects cannot be neglected. Since the Dirac operator is not bounded from below, the notion of ground state is problematic in this model, and several definitions have been proposed in the literature. We give a new definition for the ground state of the DF energy, inspired of Lieb's relaxed… ▽ More

Abstract: We consider the Peierls model for closed polyactetylene chains with an even number of carbon atoms as well as infinite chains, in the presence of temperature. Distinguished self-adjoint extension and eigenvalues of operators with gaps. Application to Dirac-Coulomb operators
Abstract: We consider a linear symmetric operator in a Hilbert space that is neither bounded from above nor from below, admits a block decomposition corresponding to an orthogonal splitting of the Hilbert space and has a variational gap property associated with the block decomposition. A typical example is the Dirac-Coulomb operator defined on $C^\infty_c(\mathbb R^3\setminus\{0\}, \mathbb C^4)$. In this pa… ▽ More

On the eigenvalues of operators with gaps. Application to Dirac operators
Abstract: This paper is devoted to a general min-max characterization of the eigenvalues in a gap of the essential spectrum of a self-adjoint unbounded operator. We prove an abstract theorem, then we apply it to the case of Dirac operators with a Coulomb-like potential. The result is optimal for the Coulomb potential. Which nuclear shape generates the strongest attraction on a relativistic electron? An open problem in relativistic quantum mechanics
Abstract: In this article we formulate several conjectures concerning the lowest eigenvalue of a Dirac operator with an external electrostatic potential. The latter describes a relativistic quantum electron moving in the field of some (pointwise or extended) nuclei. The main question we ask is whether the eigenvalue is minimal when the nuclear charge is concentrated at one single point. This well-known prop… ▽ More

Abstract: Consider the Coulomb potential $-μ\ast|x|^{-1}$ generated by a non-negative finite measure $μ$. It is well known that the lowest eigenvalue of the corresponding Schrödinger operator $-Δ/2-μ\ast|x|^{-1}$ is minimized, at fixed mass $μ(\mathbb{R}^3)=ν$, when $μ$ is proportional to a delta.
