We review the description of classical gravitational scatterings of two compact objects by means of the eikonal framework. As an application, we combine the next-to-leading post-Minkowskian (PM) waveform derived in the post-Newtonian (PN) limit with the 4PM static loss due to the linear memory effect to reproduce known results for the total angular mometum loss in the center-of-mass frame up to $\mathcal O(G^4)$ and 2.5PN order. We also provide similar expressions for the change in the system's mass dipole, discussing the subtleties related to its sensitivity to the Coulombic components of the field and to the nonlinear memory effect.

We consider the frequency-domain LO and NLO post-Minkowskian (PM) waveforms obtained from the tree-level and one-loop amplitudes describing the scattering of two massive scalar objects and the emission of one graviton. We explicitly calculate their post-Newtonian (PN) limit obtaining an expansion up to the third subleading PN order in all ingredients: the tree-level amplitude, the odd and even parts of the real one-loop kernel, and the Compton or "rescattering" cuts, thus reaching 3PN precision for the latter. We provide explicit expressions for the multipole decomposition of these results in the center-of-mass frame and compare them with the results obtained from the classical Multipolar post-Minkowskian (MPM) method. We find perfect agreement between the two, once the BMS supertranslation frame is properly adjusted and the infrared divergences due to rescattering are suitably subtracted in dimensional regularization. This shows that the approach proposed in arXiv:2312.07452 can be applied beyond the soft-regime ensuring the agreement between amplitude-based and MPM results for generic frequencies.

We revisit the amplitude-based derivation of gravitational waveform for the scattering of two scalar black holes at subleading post-Minkowskian (PM) order. We take an eikonal-inspired approach to the two-massive-particle cut needed in the KMOC framework, as highlighted in arXiv:2308.02125, and show that its effect is to implement a simple change of frame. This clarifies one of the points raised in arXiv:2309.14925 when comparing with the post-Newtonian (PN) results. We then provide an explicit PM expression for the waveform in the soft limit, $ω\to0$, including the first non-universal, $ω\logω$, contribution. Focusing on this regime, we show that the small-velocity limit of our result agrees with the soft limit of the PN waveform of arXiv:2309.14925, provided that the two quantities are written in the same asymptotic frame. Performing the BMS supertranslation that, as discussed in arXiv:2201.11607, is responsible for the $\mathcal O(G)$ static contribution to the asymptotic field employed in the PN literature, we find agreement between the amplitude-based and the PN soft waveform up to and including $G^3/c^5$ order.

Microstrata are the non-extremal analogues of superstrata: they are smooth, non-extremal (non-BPS) solitonic solutions to IIB supergravity whose deep-throat limits approximate black holes. Using perturbation theory and numerical methods, we construct families of solutions using a consistent truncation to three-dimensional supergravity. The most general families presented here involve two continuous parameters, or amplitudes, and four quantized parameters that set the angular momenta and energy levels. Our solutions are asymptotic to the vacuum of the D1-D5 system: AdS$_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$. Using holography, we show that the they are dual to multi-particle states in the D1-D5 CFT involving a large number of mutually non-BPS supergravitons and we determine the anomalous dimensions of these states from the binding energies in supergravity. These binding energies are uniformly negative and depend non-linearly on the amplitudes of the states. In one family of solutions, smoothness restricts some of the fields to lie on a special locus of the parameter space. Using precision holography we show that this special locus can be identified with the multi-particle states constructed via the standard OPE of the single-particle constituents. Our numerical analysis shows that microstrata are robust at large amplitudes and the solutions can be obtained to very high precision.

Motivated by conceptual problems in quantum theories of gravity, the gravitational eikonal approach, inspired by its electromagnetic predecessor, has been successfully applied to the transplanckian energy collisions of elementary particles and strings since the late eighties, and to string-brane collisions in the past decade. After the direct detection of gravitational waves from black-hole mergers, most of the attention has shifted towards adapting these methods to the physics of black-hole encounters. For such systems, the eikonal exponentiation provides an amplitude-based approach to calculate classical gravitational observables, thus complementing more traditional analytic methods such as the Post-Newtonian expansion, the worldline formalism, or the Effective-One-Body approach. In this review we summarize the main ideas and techniques behind the gravitational eikonal formalism. We discuss how it can be applied in various different physical setups involving particles, strings and branes and then we mainly concentrate on the most recent developments, focusing on massive scalars minimally coupled to gravity, for which we aim at being as self-contained and comprehensive as possible.

We study the analytic structure of the heavy-heavy-light-light holographic correlators in the supergravity approximation of the AdS$_3 \times S^3$/CFT$_2$ duality. As an explicit example, we derive the correlator where the heavy operator is a classical microstate of the 5D supersymmetric black hole and its dual geometry interpolates as a function of a continuous parameter between global AdS$_3$ and the extremal BTZ black hole. The simplest perturbation of this interpolating geometry by a light field is described by the Heun equation and we exploit the relation of its connection coefficients to the Liouville CFT to analytically compute the correlator in the two limits, focusing in particular on the black hole regime. In this limit we find that the real poles of the correlator become dense and can be approximated by a cut. We show that, when the charges of the heavy state are in the black hole regime, the discontinuity across the cut has complex poles corresponding to the quasi-normal modes of BTZ. This behaviour is qualitatively similar to what is expected for the large central charge limit of a typical black hole microstate

The ALICE ITS3 (Inner Tracking System 3) upgrade project and the CERN EP R&D on monolithic pixel sensors are investigating the feasibility of the Tower Partners Semiconductor Co. 65 nm process for use in the next generation of vertex detectors. The ITS3 aims to employ wafer-scale Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors thinned down to 20 to 40 um and bent to form truly cylindrical half barrels. Among the first critical steps towards the realisation of this detector is to validate the sensor technology through extensive characterisation both in the laboratory and with in-beam measurements. The Digital Pixel Test Structure (DPTS) is one of the prototypes produced in the first sensor submission in this technology and has undergone a systematic measurement campaign whose details are presented in this article.
The results confirm the goals of detection efficiency and non-ionising and ionising radiation hardness up to the expected levels for ALICE ITS3 and also demonstrate operation at +20 C and a detection efficiency of 99% for a DPTS irradiated with a dose of $10^{15}$ 1 MeV n$_{\mathrm{eq}}/$cm$^2$. Furthermore, spatial, timing and energy resolutions were measured at various settings and irradiation levels.

We propose two possible eikonal operators encoding the effects of classical radiation as coherent states of gravitons and show how to compute from them different classical observables. In the first proposal, only genuinely propagating gravitons are included, while, in the second, zero-frequency modes are added in order to recover the effects of a static gravitational field. We first calculate the radiated energy-momentum and the change in each particle's momentum, or impulse, to 3PM order finding agreement with the literature. We then calculate the angular momentum of the gravitational field after the collision. In order to do so, we adapt the method of reverse unitarity to the presence of derivatives in the operators describing the angular momentum and reproduce the result of~\cite{Manohar:2022dea} obtained by resumming the small-velocity expansion. As a new application, we derive also the variation in each particle's angular momentum up to 3PM: calculating separately field and particle contributions allows us to check the balance laws explicitly. We also show how the eikonal operator encodes the linear-response formula of Bini-Damour by deriving the linear radiation-reaction contribution to the transverse impulse at 4PM.

Observables related to the real part of the gravitational eikonal, such as the deflection angle and time delay, have been found so far to have a smooth post-Minkowskian (PM) expansion whose validity extends from the non-relativistic to the most extreme ultra-relativistic (UR) regime, which smoothly connects with massless particle collisions. To describe gravitational radiation, the eikonal phase has to be promoted to a unitary operator for which we motivate a proposal and start discussing properties in the soft-radiation limit. A convergent PM expansion is found to only hold below an UR bound (discussed in the GR literature in the seventies) above which a different expansion is instead needed implying, in general, some non-analyticity in Newton's constant. In this extreme UR regime soft radiative observables receive contributions only from gravitons and are therefore universal. This generalises the pattern discussed in \cite{DiVecchia:2020ymx} beyond the elastic case.

By following closely Weinberg's soft theorem, which captures the $1/ω$ pole contribution to the amplitude for soft graviton emissions ($ω<Λ$) on top of an arbitrary background hard process, we calculate the expectation value of the graviton's angular momentum operator for arbitrary collisions dressed with soft radiation. We find that the result becomes independent of the cutoff $Λ$ on the graviton's frequency, effectively localizing at $ω=0$. In this way, our result captures the contribution to the angular momentum that comes from the zero-frequency modes. Like the soft theorem, our formula has an exact dependence on the kinematics of the hard particles and is only a function of their momenta. As an example, we discuss in some detail the case of the $2 \to 2$ scattering of spinless particles in General Relativity and ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity.

The minimum sum-of-squares clustering (MSSC), or k-means type clustering, is traditionally considered an unsupervised learning task. In recent years, the use of background knowledge to improve the cluster quality and promote interpretability of the clustering process has become a hot research topic at the intersection of mathematical optimization and machine learning research. The problem of taking advantage of background information in data clustering is called semi-supervised or constrained clustering. In this paper, we present a branch-and-cut algorithm for semi-supervised MSSC, where background knowledge is incorporated as pairwise must-link and cannot-link constraints. For the lower bound procedure, we solve the semidefinite programming relaxation of the MSSC discrete optimization model, and we use a cutting-plane procedure for strengthening the bound. For the upper bound, instead, by using integer programming tools, we use an adaptation of the k-means algorithm to the constrained case. For the first time, the proposed global optimization algorithm efficiently manages to solve real-world instances up to 800 data points with different combinations of must-link and cannot-link constraints and with a generic number of features. This problem size is about four times larger than the one of the instances solved by state-of-the-art exact algorithms.

A novel approach for designing the next generation of vertex detectors foresees to employ wafer-scale sensors that can be bent to truly cylindrical geometries after thinning them to thicknesses of 20-40$μ$m. To solidify this concept, the feasibility of operating bent MAPS was demonstrated using 1.5$\times$3cm ALPIDE chips. Already with their thickness of 50$μ$m, they can be successfully bent to radii of about 2cm without any signs of mechanical or electrical damage. During a subsequent characterisation using a 5.4GeV electron beam, it was further confirmed that they preserve their full electrical functionality as well as particle detection performance.
In this article, the bending procedure and the setup used for characterisation are detailed. Furthermore, the analysis of the beam test, including the measurement of the detection efficiency as a function of beam position and local inclination angle, is discussed. The results show that the sensors maintain their excellent performance after bending to radii of 2cm, with detection efficiencies above 99.9% at typical operating conditions, paving the way towards a new class of detectors with unprecedented low material budget and ideal geometrical properties.

These connected correlators are obtained by studying a heavy-heavy-light-light correlation function in the formal limit where the heavy operators become light. These results provide a window into higher-point holographic correlators of single-particle operators. We find that the correlators involving multi-trace operators are compactly written in terms of Bloch-Wigner-Ramakrishnan functions -- particular linear combinations of higher-order polylogarithm functions. Several consistency checks of the derived expressions are performed in various OPE channels. We also extract the anomalous dimensions and 3-point couplings of the non-BPS double-trace operators of lowest twist at order $1/c$ and find some positive anomalous dimensions at spin zero and two in the K3 case.

Using $\mathcal N=8$ supergravity as a theoretical laboratory, we extract the 3PM gravitational eikonal for two colliding massive scalars from the classical limit of the corresponding elastic two-loop amplitude. We employ the eikonal phase to obtain the physical deflection angle and to show how its non-relativistic (NR) and ultra-relativistic (UR) regimes are smoothly connected. Such a smooth interpolation rests on kee** contributions to the loop integrals originating from the full soft region, rather than restricting it to its potential sub-region. This task is efficiently carried out by using the method of differential equations with complete near-static boundary conditions. In contrast to the potential-region result, the physical deflection angle includes radiation-reaction contributions that are essential for recovering the finite and universal UR limit implied by general analyticity and crossing arguments. We finally discuss the real emission of massless states, which accounts for the imaginary part of the 3PM eikonal and for the dissipation of energy-momentum. Adopting a direct approach based on unitarity and on the classical limit of the inelastic tree-level amplitude, we are able to treat $\mathcal N=8$ and General Relativity on the same footing, and to complete the conservative 3PM eikonal in Einstein's gravity by the addition of the radiation-reaction contribution. We also show how this approach can be used to compute waveforms, as well as the differential and integrated spectra, for the different radiated massless fields.

Radiation reaction (RR) terms at the third post-Minkowskian (3PM) order have recently been found to be instrumental in restoring smooth continuity between the non-relativistic, relativistic, and ultra-relativistic (including the massless) regimes. Here we propose a new and intriguing connection between RR and soft (bremsstrahlung) theorems which short-circuits the more involved conventional loop computations. Although first noticed in the context of the maximally supersymmetric theory, unitarity and analyticity arguments support the general validity of this 3PM-order connection that we apply, in particular, to Einstein's gravity and to its Jordan-Brans-Dicke extension. In the former case we find full agreement with a recent result by Damour obtained through a very different reasoning.

We discuss the ultra-relativistic gravitational scattering of two massive particles at two-loop (3PM) level. We find that in this limit the real part of the eikonal, determining the deflection angle, is universal for gravitational theories in the two derivative approximation. This means that, regardless of the number of supersymmetries or the nature of the probes, the result connects smoothly with the massless case discussed since the late eighties by Amati, Ciafaloni and Veneziano. We analyse the problem both by using the analyticity and crossing properties of the scattering amplitudes and, in the case of the maximally supersymmetric theory, by explicit evaluation of the 4-point 2-loop amplitude using the results for the integrals in the full soft region. The first approach shows that the observable we are interested in is determined by the inelastic tree-level amplitude describing the emission of a graviton in the high-energy double-Regge limit, which is the origin of the universality property mentioned above. The second approach strongly suggests that the inclusion of the whole soft region is a necessary (and possibly sufficient) ingredient for recovering ultra relativistic finiteness and universality at the 3PM level. We conjecture that this universality persists at all orders in the PM expansion.

We consider both correlators involving all light operators and HHLL correlators with two light and two heavy multi-particle states. These heavy operators have a conformal dimension proportional to the central charge and are pure states of the theory, dual to asymptotically AdS$_3 \times S^3$ regular geometries. Deviation from AdS$_3 \times S^3$ is parametrised by a scale $μ$ and is related to the conformal dimension of the dual heavy operator. In the HHLL case, we work at leading order in $μ$ and derive the CFT data relevant to the bootstrap relations in the Regge limit. Here we extend it to general AdS$_3 \times S^3$ correlators which contain also the chiral primary operators of spin zero and one that sit in the gravity multiplet. The key observation is that the 6D conformal primary field associated with these operators is not a scalar but a self-dual $3$-form primary. As an example, we focus on the correlators involving two fields in the tensor multiplets and two in the gravity multiplet and show that all such correlators are encoded in a conformal 6D correlator between two scalars and two self-dual $3$-forms, which is determined by three functions of the cross ratios. We fix these three functions by comparing with the results of the simplest correlators derived from an explicit supergravity calculation.

We report on phenomena observed in planar integrated networks obtained connecting superconducting island by Josephson tunnel junctions. These networks, identifiable as tree-like graphs, have branches consisting of series arrays of Josephson junctions which can be individually current biased and characterized. Both Josephson supercurrents and gap parameters of the arrays embedded in the graph structures display properties significantly different from those of reference arrays fabricated on the same chips and having identical geometrical shape. The temperature and magnetic field dependencies of the Josephson current of the embedded arrays both show a singular behavior when a critical value is reached by the Josephson characteristic energy. The gap parameter of the junctions generating the embedded arrays is higher than that of the junctions forming the reference geometrical arrays.

High-energy massless gravitational scattering in ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity was recently analyzed at leading level in the deflection angle, uncovering an interesting connection between exponentiation of infrared divergences in momentum space and the eikonal exponentiation in impact parameter space. Here we extend that analysis to the first non trivial sub-leading level in the deflection angle which, for massless external particles, implies going to two loops, i.e. to third post-Minkowskian (3PM) order. As in the case of the leading eikonal, we see that the factorisation of the momentum space amplitude into the exponential of the one-loop result times a finite remainder hides some basic simplicity of the impact parameter formulation. For the conservative part of the process, the explicit outcome is infrared (IR) finite, shows no logarithmic enhancement, and agrees with an old claim in pure Einstein gravity, while the dissipative part is IR divergent and should be regularized, as usual, by including soft gravitational bremsstrahlung. Finally, using recent three-loop results, we test the expectation that eikonal formulation accounts for the exponentiation of the lower-loop results in the momentum space amplitude. This passes a number of highly non-trivial tests, but appears to fail for the dissipative part of the process at all loop orders and sufficiently subleading order in $ε$, hinting at some lack of commutativity of the relevant infrared limits for each exponentiation.

The structure of scattering amplitudes in supergravity theories continues to be of interest. Recently, the amplitude for $2\rightarrow 2$ scattering in ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity was presented at three-loop order for the first time. The result can be written in terms of an exponentiated one-loop contribution, modulo a remainder function which is free of infrared singularities, but contains leading terms in the high energy Regge limit. We explain the origin of these terms from a well-known, unitarity-restoring exponentiation of the high-energy gravitational $S$-matrix in impact-parameter space. Furthermore, we predict the existence of similar terms in the remainder function at all higher loop orders. Our results provide a non-trivial cross-check of the recent three-loop calculation, and a necessary consistency constraint for any future calculation at higher loops.

We present a formula for the holographic 4-point correlators in AdS$_3 \times S^3$ involving four single-trace operators of dimension $k, k, l, l$. As an input we use the supergravity results for the Heavy-Heavy-Light-Light correlators that can be derived by studying the linear fluctuations around known asymptotically AdS$_3 \times S^3$ geometries. When the operators of dimension $k$ and $l$ are in the same multiplet there are contributions due to the exchange of single-trace operators in the $t$ and $u$ channels, which are not captured by the approach mentioned above. However by rewriting the $s$-channel results in Mellin space we obtain a compact expression for the $s$-channel contribution that makes it possible to conjecture a formula for the complete result. We discuss some consistency checks that our proposal meets.

In this paper we study the two-body gravitational scattering of massive scalars with different masses in general spacetime dimensions. We focus on the Regge limit (eikonal regime) of the resulting scattering amplitudes and discuss how to extract the classical information representing the scattering of two black holes. We derive the leading eikonal and explicitly show the resummation of the first leading energy contribution up to second order in Newton's gravitational constant. We also calculate the subleading eikonal showing that in general spacetime dimensions it receives a non-trivial contribution from the box integral. From the eikonal we extract the two-body classical scattering angle between the two black holes up to the second post-Minkowskian order (2PM). Taking various probe-limits of the two-body scattering angles we are able to show agreement between our results and various results in the literature. We highlight that the box integral also has a log-divergent (in energy) contribution at subsubleading order which violates perturbative unitarity in the ultra-relativistic limit. We expect this term to play a role in the calculation of the eikonal at the 3PM order.

We follow the direct approach of orthonormalising, at order $1/c$, the space of the Virasoro descendants to obtain the blocks as a series expansion around $z=0$. For generic conformal weights this expansion can be summed in terms of hypergeometric functions and their first derivatives with respect to one parameter. For integer conformal weights we provide an equivalent expression written in terms of a finite sum of undifferentiated hypergeometric functions. These results make the monodromies of the blocks around $z=1$ manifest.

In this paper we study the subleading contributions to eikonal scattering in (super)gravity theories with particular emphasis on the role of both elastic and inelastic scattering processes. For concreteness we focus on the scattering of various massless particles off a stack of D$p$-branes in type II supergravity in the limit of large impact parameter $b$. We analyse the relevant field theory Feynman diagrams which naturally give rise to both elastic and inelastic processes. We show that in the case analysed the leading and subleading eikonal only depend on elastic processes, while inelastic processes are captured by a pre-factor multiplying the exponentiated leading and subleading eikonal phase. In addition to the traditional Feynman diagram computations mentioned above, we also present a novel method for computing the amplitudes contributing to the leading and subleading eikonal phases, which, in the large $b$ limit, only involves knowledge of the onshell three and four-point vertices. The two methods are shown to give the same results. Furthermore we derive these results in yet another way, by computing various one-point amplitudes which allow us to extract the classical solution of the gravitational back reaction of the target D$p$-branes. Finally we show how our expressions for the leading and subleading eikonal agree with the calculation of the metric and corresponding deflection angle for massless states moving along geodesics in the relevant curved geometry.

We prove that the displacement problem of inhomogeneous elastostatics in a two--dimensional exterior Lipschitz domain has a unique solution with finite Dirichlet integral $\u$, vanishing uniformly at infinity if and only if the boundary datum satisfies a suitable compatibility condition (Stokes' paradox). Moreover, we prove that it is unique under the sharp condition $\u=o(\log r)$ and decays uniformly at infinity with a rate depending on the elasticities. In particular, if these last ones tend to a homogeneous state at large distance, then $\u=O(r^{-α})$, for every $α<1$.

For a particular family of heavy states we also provide a result valid for any value of the spin. In all cases we find that the correlators depend non-trivially on the CFT moduli and are not determined by the symmetries of the theory, however they have the properties expected for correlators among pure states in a unitary theory, in particular they do not decay at large Lorentzian times.

We show that by studying the quadratic fluctuations around such backgrounds it is possible to derive the 4-point correlators of two light and two heavy states in the supergravity approximation. We provide an explicit example in the AdS$_3$ setup relevant for the duality with the D1-D5 CFT. Contrary to previously studied examples, the supergravity correlator derived in this work differs from the result obtained at the CFT orbifold point. Our method bypasses the difficulties of applying the standard Witten's diagrams approach to correlators with operators of large conformal dimension and also avoids some technical steps that have made the computation of dynamical 4-point correlators in the AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ context unfeasible until now.

On the CFT side we focus on the free orbifold point and discuss how these correlators decompose in terms of conformal blocks, showing that they are determined by protected quantities. On the gravity side, the heavy states are described by regular, asymptotically AdS$_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ solutions and the correlators are obtained by studying the wave equation in these backgrounds. We find that the CFT and the gravity results agree and that, even in the large central charge limit, these correlators do not have (Euclidean) spurious singularities. We suggest that this is indeed a general feature of the heavy-light correlators in unitary CFTs, which can be relevant for understanding how information is encoded in black hole microstates.

The main goal of the experimental programs on ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions at the LHC is the production and characterization of the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP), a phase of nuclear matter in which strongly interacting constituents (quarks and gluons) are deconfined. Heavy quarks are considered effective probes of the properties of the QGP as they are created on a short time scale, with respect to that of the QGP, and subsequently interact with it. Moreover, for a proper assessment of the characteristics of the matter produced in heavy-ion collisions, it is important to disentangle the final state effects due to the formation of a QGP from the initial state effects due to the fact that nuclei are present in the colliding system. Both initial and final state effects may lead to qualitatively similar phenomena in the observables of interest. The measurement of charmed meson production in proton-nucleus collisions allows to assess initial state effects present in nuclear collisions, under the assumption that an extended deconfined medium is not created in this kind of interactions. The nuclear modification factor of $D$ mesons in p-Pb collisions ($R_{\rm pPb}$) is essential for a complete understanding of the modification of $D$ mesons momentum distributions observed in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$= 2.76 TeV, which is interpreted as due to the $c$-quark energy loss in the medium. In addition, some of the results obtained from high-multiplicity p-Pb collisions at LHC, such as the ridge structure in the two-particle correlation function, turned out to be unexpected, and have been interpreted in terms of final state effects such as hydrodynamic flow. These aspects make a study of charmed meson production in p-Pb collisions as a function of the event multiplicity of great interest.

We analyze the pertubative contributions to the $D^4 R^4$ and $D^6 R^4$ couplings in the low-energy effective action of type II string theory compactified on a torus $T^d$, with particular emphasis on two-loop corrections. In general, it is necessary to introduce an infrared cut-off $Λ$ to separate local interactions from non-local effects due to the exchange of massless states. We identify the degenerations of the genus-two Riemann surface which are responsible for power-like dependence on $Λ$, and give an explicit prescription for extracting the $Λ$-independent effective couplings. These renormalized couplings are then shown to be eigenmodes of the Laplace operator with respect to the torus moduli, up to computable anomalous source terms arising in the presence of logarithmic divergences, in precise agreement with predictions from U-duality. Our results for the two-loop $D^6 R^4$ contribution also probe essential properties of the Kawazumi-Zhang invariant

In this paper we provide a precise description of the semiclassical states dual, in the AdS/CFT sense, to these geometries. In explicit examples we show that the holographic 1-point functions and the Ryu-Takayanagi's Entanglement Entropy for a single small interval match the corresponding CFT calculations performed by using the proposed dual states. We also discuss several new examples of such precision holography analysis in the 1/4-BPS sector and provide an explicit proof that the small interval derivation of the Entanglement Entropy used in arXiv:1405.6185 is fully covariant.

Starting from the superstring amplitude describing interactions among D-branes with a constant world-volume field strength, we present a detailed analysis of how the open string degeneration limits reproduce the corresponding field theory Feynman diagrams. A key ingredient in the string construction is represented by the twisted (Prym) super differentials, as their periods encode the information about the background field. We provide an efficient method to calculate perturbatively the determinant of the twisted period matrix in terms of sets of super-moduli appropriate to the degeneration limits. Using this result we show that there is a precise one-to-one correspondence between the degeneration of different factors in the superstring amplitudes and one-particle irreducible Feynman diagrams capturing the gauge theory effective action at the two-loop level.

We construct the first example of a superstratum: a class of smooth horizonless supergravity solutions that are parameterized by arbitrary continuous functions of (at least) two variables and have the same charges as the supersymmetric D1-D5-P black hole. We work in Type IIB string theory on T^4 or K3 and our solutions involve a subset of fields that can be described by a six-dimensional supergravity with two tensor multiplets. The solutions can thus be constructed using a linear structure, and we give an explicit recipe to start from a superposition of modes specified by an arbitrary function of two variables and impose regularity to obtain the full horizonless solutions in closed form. We also give the precise CFT description of these solutions and show that they are not dual to descendants of chiral primaries. They are thus much more general than all the known solutions whose CFT dual is precisely understood. Hence our construction represents a substantial step toward the ultimate goal of constructing the fully generic superstratum that can account for a finite fraction of the entropy of the three-charge black hole in the regime of parameters where the classical black hole solution exists.

Abstract:
In this paper we deal with the noteworthy Sylvester's determinantal identity and some of its generalizations. We report the formulae due to Yakovlev, to Gasca, Lopez--Carmona, Ramirez, to Beckermann, Gasca, Mühlbach, and to Mulders in a unified formulation which allows to understand them better and to compare them. We report the formulae due to Yakovlev, to Gasca, Lopez--Carmona, Ramirez, to Beckermann, Gasca, Mühlbach, and to Mulders in a unified formulation which allows to understand them better and to compare them. Then, we propose a different generalization of Sylvester's classical formula. This new generalization expresses the determinant of a matrix in relation with the determinant of the bordered matrices obtained adding more than one row and one column to the original matrix. Sylvester's identity is recovered as a particular case.

Higher-derivative corrections to the Einstein-Hilbert action are present in bosonic string theory leading to the potential causality violations recently pointed out by Camanho et al. We analyze in detail this question by considering high-energy string-brane collisions at impact parameters $b \le l_s$ (the string-length parameter) with $l_s \gg R_p$ (the characteristic scale of the D$p$-brane geometry). If we keep only the contribution of the massless states causality is violated for a set of initial states whose polarization is suitably chosen with respect to the impact parameter vector. Such violations are instead neatly avoided when the full structure of string theory - and in particular its Regge behavior - is taken into account.

In these proceedings results are presented from the measurement of open heavy-flavour production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity in pp collisions at $\sqrt {s}$ = 7 TeV and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt {s_{\rm NN}}$=5.02 TeV recorded with the ALICE detector in 2010 and 2013, respectively. $\rm D^{0}$, $\rm D^{+}$ and $\rm D^{*+}$ mesons are reconstructed from their hadronic decay channels in the central rapidity region, and their production yields are measured in various multiplicity and $p_{\rm T}$ intervals. The per-event yields of $\rm D$ mesons in the various multiplicity intervals, normalized to their multiplicity-integrated value, and their evolution with $p_{\rm T}$ are measured for pp and p-Pb collisions to study the contribution of Multi-Parton Interactions (MPIs) to open charm production in the two systems. The nuclear modification factor of $\rm D$ mesons in p-Pb collisions, defined as the ratio of the $\rm D$-meson yields in p-Pb and pp collisions scaled by the average number of binary collisions $< N_{\rm coll}>$, is discussed in terms of its dependence on the event activity. Several experimental estimators of the event activity are used in order to assess the role of kinematic biases.

The coefficient of the $D^6 {\cal R}^4$ interaction in the low energy expansion of the two-loop four-graviton amplitude in type II superstring theory is known to be proportional to the integral of the Zhang-Kawazumi (ZK) invariant over the moduli space of genus-two Riemann surfaces. We demonstrate that the ZK invariant is an eigenfunction with eigenvalue 5 of the Laplace-Beltrami operator in the interior of moduli space. Exploiting this result, we evaluate the integral of the ZK invariant explicitly, finding agreement with the value of the two-loop $D^6 {\cal R}^4$ interaction predicted on the basis of S-duality and supersymmetry. A review of the current understanding of the $D^{2p} {\cal R}^4$ interactions in type II superstring theory compactified on a torus $T^d$ with $p \leq 3$ and $d \leq 4$ is included.

In this work we consider systems that are in a pure state that is not the vacuum. We study in particular the 2D Conformal Field Theory dual to type IIB string theory on AdS$_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ and focus on the $1/4$-BPS states described holographically by the 2-charge microstate geometries. We discuss a general prescription for the calculation of the entanglement entropy in these geometries that are asymptotically AdS$_3 \times S^3$. In particular we study analytically the perturbative expansion for a single, short interval: we show that the first non-trivial terms in this expansion are consistent with the expected CFT structure and with previous results on the vevs of chiral primary operators for the $1/4$-BPS configurations.
