Constraining the minimal supergravity model parameter tan(beta) by measuring the dilepton mass distribution at LHC
Authors:

Abstract:
We study the dependence on $\tanβ$ of the event kinematics of final states with $e^+e^- /μ^+μ^- /e^{\pm}μ^{\mp} + E_T^{\rm miss} + jets$, as expected in $pp$ collisions at CERN LHC, within the framework of the minimal supergravity model. With increase of $\tanβ$, the third generation sparticle masses $m_{\tildeτ_1}$ and $m_{\tilde{b}_1}$ decrease due to the increase of the tau and bottom Yukawa…

With increase of $\tanβ$, the third generation sparticle masses $m_{\tildeτ_1}$ and $m_{\tilde{b}_1}$ decrease due to the increase of the tau and bottom Yukawa couplings. As a result, gluino, stop, sbottom, chargino and neutralino decays to third generation particles and sparticles are enhanced. With $\tanβ$ rising, we observe a characteristic change in the shape of the dilepton mass spectra in $e^+e^- /μ^+μ^- +E_T^{\rm miss} + jets$ versus $e^{\pm}μ^{\mp} + E_T^{\rm miss} + jets$ final states, reflecting the presence of the decays $\tildeχ_2^0\to \tilde{\ell}_{L,R}^{\pm}\ell^{\mp}\to \tildeχ_1^0 \ell^+\ell^-, \tildeχ_2^0\to \tildeχ_1^0 \ell^+\ell^-$ and $\tildeχ_2^0\to \tildeτ^{\pm}_1τ^{\mp}\to \tildeχ_1^0 τ^+ τ^-$, $\tildeχ_2^0\to τ^+ τ^- \tildeχ_1^0$, respectively. We exploit this effect for constraining the value of $\tanβ$.

This work summarizes and puts in an overall perspective studies done within CMS concerning the discovery potential for squarks and gluinos, sleptons, charginos and neutralinos, SUSY dark matter, lightest Higgs, sparticle mass determination methods and the detector design optimisation in view of SUSY searches. It represents the status of our understanding of these subjects as of Summer 1997.
As a benchmark model we used the minimal supergravity-inspired super- symmetric standard model (mSUGRA) with a stable LSP. Discovery of SUSY at the LHC should be relatively straightforward. It may occur through the observation of a large excesses of events in missing E_T + jets, or with one or more isolated leptons. An excess of trilepton events or of isolated dileptons with E_T^miss, exhibiting a characteristic signature in the l^+l^- invariant mass distribution could also be the first manifestation of SUSY production. Squark and gluino production may represent a copious source of Higgs bosons through cascade decays. The lightest SUSY Higgs h->bbbar may be reconstructed with a signal/background ratio of order 1. The lightest supersymmetric particle of SUSY models with conserved R-parity represents a very good candidate for the cosmological dark matter. The region of parameter space where this is true is well-covered by our searches, at least for tan(beta)=2.
If supersymmetry exists at electroweak scale it could hardly escape detection in CMS, and the study of supersymmetry will form a central part of our physics program.

Determining the parameters of the Minimal Supergravity Model from 2l + E_T^{miss} + (jets) final states at LHC

Abstract:
We analyse the events with two same-flavour, opposite-sign leptons + $E_T^{miss}$ + (jets) as expected in pp collisions at LHC within the framework of the minimal Supergravity Model. The objective is the determination of the parameters m_0 and m_{1/2} of this model (for a given value of $\tanβ$). The signature $l^+ l^- + E_T^{miss}$ + (jets) selects the leptonic decays of $\tildeχ^0_2$, $\tildeχ^0_2 \to \tildeχ^0_1 l^+ l^- $, $\tildeχ^0_2 \to \tilde{l}_{L,R}^{\pm} l^{\mp} \to \tildeχ^0_1 l^+ l^-$. We exploit the fact that the invariant dilepton mass distribution has a pronounced structure with a sharp edge at the kinematical endpoint even in such an inclusive final state over a significant part of parameter space. We determine the domain of parameter space where the edge is expected to be visible. We show that a measurement of this edge already constrains the model parameters essentially to three lines in the ($m_0, m_{1/2}$) parameter plane. We work out a strategy to discriminate between the three-body leptonic decays of $\tildeχ^0_2$ and the decays into sleptons $\tilde{l}_{L,R}$. This procedure may make it possible to get information on SUSY particle masses already with low luminosity, L_{int}=10^3 pb^{-1}.
