Identifying Three-Dimensional Radiative Patterns Associated with Early Tropical Cyclone Intensification
Abstract: Cloud radiative feedback impacts early tropical cyclone (TC) intensification, but limitations in existing diagnostic frameworks make them unsuitable for studying asymmetric or transient radiative heating. We propose a linear Variational Encoder-Decoder (VED) to learn the hidden relationship between radiation and the surface intensification of realistic simulated TCs. Limiting VED model inputs enab… ▽ More

Signatures in the Planck Regime
Abstract: String theory suggests the existence of a minimum length scale. An exciting quantum mechanical implication of this feature is a modification of the uncertainty principle. In contrast to the conventional approach, this generalised uncertainty principle does not allow to resolve space time distances below the Planck length. In models with extra dimensions, which are also motivated by string theory… ▽ More

The Quark-Gluon Plasma in a Finite Volume
Abstract: The statistical mechanics of quarks and gluons are investigated within the context of the canonical ensemble. Recursive techniques are developed which enforce the exact conservation of baryon number, total isospin, electric charge, strangeness, and color. Bose and Fermi-Dirac statistics are also accounted for to all orders. The energy, entropy and particle number densities are shown to be signif… ▽ More

Chiral symmetry restoration in linear sigma models with different numbers of quark flavors
Abstract: Chiral symmetry restoration at nonzero temperature is studied in the framework of the O(4) linear sigma model and the U(N_f)_r x U(N_f)_l linear sigma model with N_f=2,3, and 4 quark flavors. We investigate the temperature dependence of the masses of the scalar and pseudoscalar mesons, and the non-strange, strange, and charm condensates within the Hartree approximation as derived from the Cornwa… ▽ More

Partonic Scattering Cross Sections in the QCD Medium
Abstract: A medium modified gluon propagator is used to evaluate the scattering cross section for the process gg-->gg in the QCD medium by performing an explicit sum over the polarizations of the gluons. We incorporate a magnetic sreening mass from a non-perturbative study. It is shown that the medium modified cross section is finite, divergence free, and is independent of any ad-hoc momentum transfer cut… ▽ More
