Efficiency optimization for Atomic Frequency Comb storage
Abstract: We study the efficiency of the Atomic Frequency Comb storage protocol. We show that for a given optical depth, the preparation procedure can be optimize to significantly improve the retrieval. Our prediction is well supported by the experimental implementation of the protocol in a \TMYAG crystal. We observe a net gain in efficiency from 10% to 17% by applying the optimized preparation procedure.… ▽ More

Light storage protocols in Tm:YAG
Abstract: We present two quantum memory protocols for solids: A stopped light approach based on spectral hole burning and the storage in an atomic frequency comb. These procedures are well adapted to the rare-earth ion doped crystals. We carefully clarify the critical steps of both. On one side, we show that the slowing-down due to hole-burning is sufficient to produce a complete map** of field into the… ▽ More

Observation of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency and Slow Light in the Dark State - Bright State Basis of CPT
Abstract: Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is observed in a three-level system composed of an excited state and two coherent superpositions of the two ground-state levels. This peculiar ground state basis is composed of the so-called bright and dark states of the same atomic system in a standard coherent population trap** configuration. The characteristics of EIT, namely, width of the tran… ▽ More

Efficient light storage in a crystal using an Atomic Frequency Comb
Abstract: We demonstrate efficient and reversible map** of a light field onto a thulium-doped crystal using an atomic frequency comb (AFC). Thanks to an accurate spectral preparation of the sample, we reach an efficiency of 9%. Our interpretation of the data is based on an original spectral analysis of the AFC. By independently measuring the absorption spectrum, we show that the efficiency is both limit… ▽ More

Coherent response to optical excitation in a rare-earth ion doped crystal
Abstract: We investigate coherent propagation through a large optical density Tm$^{3+}$:YAG crystal. Using an ultra-stable laser, fiber filtering and site selection, we investigate the transmitted pulse temporal profile. The plane wave condition is satisfied by selection of the illuminated spot central area. We pay special attention to $π$-pulse transmission in the prospect of implementing optical quantum… ▽ More

Why the two-pulse photon echo is not a good quantum memory protocol
Abstract: We consider in this paper a two-pulse photon echo sequence as a potential quantum light storage protocol. It is widely believed that a two-pulse scheme should lead to very low efficiency and is then not relevant for this specific application. We show experimentally by using a Tm${}^{3+}$:YAG crystal that such a protocol is on contrary very efficient and even too efficient to be considered as a g… ▽ More

Observation of Ultra-narrow Electromagnetically Induced Transparency and Slow Light using Purely Electronic Spins in a Hot Atomic Vapor
Abstract: Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is observed in gaseous 4He at room temperature. Ultra-narrow (less than 10 kHz) EIT windows are obtained for the first time for purely electronic spins in the presence of Doppler broadening. The positive role of collisions is emphasized through measurements of the power dependence of the EIT resonance. Measurement of slow light opens up possible way… ▽ More

Energy Localization in the Peyrard-Bishop DNA model
Abstract: We study energy localization on the oscillator-chain proposed by Peyrard and Bishop to model the DNA. We search numerically for conditions with initial energy in a small subgroup of consecutive oscillators of a finite chain and such that the oscillation amplitude is small outside this subgroup for a long timescale. We use a localization criterion based on the information entropy and we verify nu… ▽ More
