Disorder in ultra-thin magnetic films can significantly hinder domain wall motion. One of the main issues on the path towards efficient domain wall based devices remains the characterization of the pinning landscape at the nanoscale. In this paper, we study domain wall motion in W/CoFeB/MgO thin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy crystallized by annealing at 400$^{\circ}$C and a process based on He$^{+}$ irradiation combined with elevated temperatures. Magnetic properties are similar for the whole series of samples, while the magnetic domain wall mobility is critically improved in the irradiated samples. By using an analytical model to extract nanoscale pinning parameters, we reveal important variations in the disorder of the crystallized samples. This work offers a unique opportunity to selectively analyze the effects of disorder on the domain wall dynamics, without the contribution of changes in the magnetic properties. Our results highlight the importance of evaluating the nanoscale pinning parameters of the material when designing devices based on domain wall motion, which in return can be a powerful tool to probe the disorder in ultra-thin magnetic films.

Magnetic skyrmions are localized chiral spin textures, which offer great promise to store and process information at the nanoscale. In the presence of asymmetric exchange interactions, their chirality, which governs their dynamics, is generally considered as an intrinsic parameter set during the sample deposition. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate that a gate voltage can control this key parameter. We probe the chirality of skyrmions and chiral domain walls by observing the direction of their current-induced motion and show that a gate voltage can reverse it. This local and dynamical reversal of the chirality is due to a sign inversion of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction that we attribute to ionic migration of oxygen under gate voltage. Micromagnetic simulations show that the chirality reversal is a continuous transformation, in which the skyrmion is conserved. This control of chirality with 2 - 3 V gate voltage can be used for skyrmion-based logic devices, yielding new functionalities.

In Ta/CoFeB/HfO2 stacks a gate voltage drives, in a nonvolatile way, the system from an underoxidized state exhibiting in-plane anisotropy (IPA) to an optimum oxidation level resulting in perpendicular anisotropy (PMA) and further into an overoxidized state with IPA. The IPA$\,\to\,$PMA regime is found to be significantly faster than the PMA$\,\to\,$IPA regime, while only the latter shows full reversibility under the same gate voltages. The effective dam** parameter also shows a marked dependence with gate voltage in the IPA$\,\to\,$PMA regime, going from 0.029 to 0.012, and only a modest increase to 0.014 in the PMA$\,\to\,$IPA regime. The existence of two magneto-ionic regimes has been linked to a difference in the chemical environment of the anchoring points of oxygen species added to underoxidized or overoxidized layers. Our results show that multiple magneto-ionic regimes can exist in a single device and that their characterization is of great importance for the design of high performance spintronics devices.

Skyrmions are magnetic bubbles with nontrivial topology envisioned as data bits for ultrafast and power-efficient spintronic memory and logic devices. They may be stabilized in heavy-metal/ferromagnetic/oxide trilayer systems. The skyrmion chirality is then determined by the sign of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Nevertheless, for apparently identical systems, there is some controversy about the DMI sign. Here, we show that the degree of oxidation of the top interface and the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer play a major role. Using Brillouin light-scattering measurements in Ta/Fe-Co-B/TaOx trilayers, we demonstrate a sign change of the DMI with the degree of oxidation of the Fe-Co-B/TaOx interface. Using polar magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy, we consistently observe a reversal of the direction of current-induced motion of skyrmions with the oxidation level of TaOx; this is attributed to their chirality reversal. In addition, a second chirality reversal is observed when changing the Fe-Co-B thickness, probably due to the proximity of the two Fe-Co-B interfaces in the ultrathin case. By properly tuning the chirality of the skyrmion, spin-transfer and spin-orbit torques combine constructively to enhance the skyrmion velocity. These observations thus allow us to envision an optimization of the material parameters to produce highly mobile skyrmions. Moreover, this chirality control enables a versatile manipulation of skyrmions and paves the way towards multidirectional devices.

Magnetic skyrmions are chiral spin textures that hold great promise as nanoscale information carriers. Since their first observation at room temperature, progress has been made in their current-induced manipulation, with fast motion reported in stray-field-coupled multilayers. However, the complex spin textures with hybrid chiralities and large power dissipation in these multilayers limit their practical implementation and the fundamental understanding of their dynamics. Here, we report on the current-driven motion of Néel skyrmions with diameters in the 100-nm range in an ultrathin Pt/Co/MgO trilayer. We find that these skyrmions can be driven at a speed of 100 m/s and exhibit a drive-dependent skyrmion Hall effect, which is accounted for by the effect of pinning. Our experiments are well substantiated by an analytical model of the skyrmion dynamics as well as by micromagnetic simulations including material inhomogeneities. This good agreement is enabled by the simple skyrmion spin structure in our system and a thorough characterization of its static and dynamical properties.

Vibrating sample magnetometry revealed that magnetization at saturation (Ms) for the Pt and Ir buffered films is higher than the usual Ms of CFA due to the proximity induced magnetization (PIM) in Ir and Pt, estimated to be 19% and 27%, respectively. The presence of PIM in these materials is confirmed using x-ray resonant magnetic reflectivity. Moreover, while no PIM is induced in W, higher PIM is obtained with Pt when it is used as buffer layer rather than cap** layer. Brillouin light scattering (BLS) in the Damon-Eshbach geometry has been used to investigate iDMI constants and the perpendicular anisotropy field versus the annealing temperature. The DMI sign has been found to be negative for Pt/CFA and Ir/CFA while it is positive for W/CFA. The thickness dependence of the effective iDMI constant for stacks involving Pt and W shows the existence of two regimes similarly to that of the perpendicular anisotropy constant due to the degradation of the interfaces as the CFA thickness approaches the nanometer. The surface iDMI and anisotropy constants of each stack have been determined for the thickest samples where a linear thickness dependence of the effective iDMI constant and the effective magnetization has been observed. The interface anisotropy and iDMI constants, investigated for Pt/CFA/MgO system, showed different trends with the annealing temperature. The decrease of iDMI constant with increasing annealing temperature is probably due to the electronic structure changes at the interfaces, while the increase of the interface anisotropy constant is coherent the interface quality and disorder enhancement.

Co2FeAl (CFA) ultrathin films, of various thicknesses (0.9 nm<tCFA<1.8 nm), have been grown by sputtering on Si substrates, using Ir as a buffer layer. The magnetic properties of the structures have been studied by vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), miscrostrip ferromagnetic resonance (MS-FMR) and Brillouin light scattering (BLS) in the Damon-Eshbach geometry. VSM characterizations show that films are mostly in-plane magnetized and the perpendicular saturating field increases with decreasing CFA thickness suggesting the existence of interface anisotropy. The presence of magnetic dead layers of 0.44 nm has been detected by VSM. The MS-FMR with perpendicular applied magnetic field has been used to determine the gyromagnetic factor. The BLS measurements reveal a pronounced nonreciprocal spin waves propagation, due to the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) induced by Ir interface with CFA, which increases with decreasing CFA thickness. The DMI sign has been found to be the same (negative) as that of Pt/Co, in contrast to the ab-initio calculation on Ir/Co. The thickness dependence of the effective DMI constant shows the existence of two regimes similarly to that of the perpendicular anisotropy constant. The DMI constant Ds was estimated to be -0.37 pJ/m for the thickest samples where a linear thickness dependence of the effective DMI constant has been observed.

Vibrating sample magnetometer has been used to measure their magnetization at saturation and their interlayer exchange coupling constants. These latter are found to be of an antiferromagnetic nature for the investigated Ru range thickness (0.5-1 nm). Their dynamic magnetic properties were studied using Brillouin light scattering (BLS) technique. The BLS measurements reveal pronounced non-reciprocal spin waves propagation. In contrast to the calculations for symmetrical IEC CoFeB layers, this experimental nonreciprocity is Ru thickness and thus coupling strength dependent. Therefore, to explain the experimental behaviour, a theoretical model based on the perpendicular interface anisotropy difference between the bottom and top CoFeB layers has been developed. We show that the Ru thickness dependence of the spin wave non-reciprocity is well reproduced by considering a constant iDMI and different perpendicular interfacial anisotropy fields between the top and bottom CoFeB layers. This anisotropy difference has been confirmed by the investigation of the CoFeB thickness dependence of effective magnetization of Pt/CoFeB/Ru and Ru/CoFeB/MgO individual layers, where a linear behaviour has been observed.

Here we show that the magnon visibility, i.e. the intensity of the inelastically scattered light, strongly depends on the thickness of the dielectric seed material - SiO$_2$. By using both, analytical thin-film optics and numerical calculations, we reproduce the experimental data. We therefore provide a guideline for the maximization of the signal by adapting the substrate properties to the geometry of the measurement. Such a boost-up of the signal eases the magnon visualization in ultrathin magnetic films, speeds-up the measurement and increases the reliability of the data.

DMI occurs at the interface between ferromagnetic and heavy metal layers with strong spin-orbit coupling, but details of the interaction remain to be understood and the role of proximity induced magnetism (PIM) in the heavy metal is unknown. We report interfacial DMI and PIM in Pt determined as a function of Au and Ir spacer layers in Pt/Co/Au,Ir/Pt. The length-scale for both interactions is sensitive to sub-nanometre changes in the spacer thickness, and they correlate over sub mono-layer spacer thicknesses, but not for thicker spacers. The spacer layer thickness dependence of the Pt PIM for both Au and Ir shows a rapid monotonic decay, while the DMI changes rapidly but has a two-step approach to saturation and continues to change, even after the PIM is lost.

We have characterized the strength of the interfacial Dyzaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in ultrathin perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB/MgO films, grown on different underlayers of W, TaN, and Hf, using two experimental methods. First, we determined the effective DMI field from measurements of field-driven domain wall motion in the creep regime, where applied in-plane magnetic fields induce an anisotropy in the wall propagation that is correlated with the DMI strength. Second, Brillouin light spectroscopy was employed to quantify the frequency non-reciprocity of spin waves in the CoFeB layers, which yielded an independent measurement of the DMI. By combining these results, we show that DMI estimates from the different techniques only yield qualitative agreement, which suggests that open questions remain on the underlying models used to interpret these results.

To date, chiral skyrmion structures have been experimentally demonstrated only in bulk materials and in epitaxial ultrathin films and under external magnetic field or at low temperature. Here, we report on the observation of stable skyrmions in sputtered ultrathin Pt/Co/MgO nanostructures, at room temperature and zero applied magnetic field. We use high lateral resolution X-ray magnetic circular dichroism microscopy to image their chiral Néel internal structure which we explain as due to the large strength of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction as revealed by spin wave spectroscopy measurements. The measurements reveal a pronounced nonreciprocal propagation, which increases with decreasing Co thicknesses. This nonreciprocity is attributed to an interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), which is significantly stronger than asymmetries resulting from surface anisotropies for such modes. Results are consistent with an interfacial DMI constant $D_s = -1.7 \pm 0.11$ pJ/m, which favors left-handed chiral spin structures. This suggests that such films below 1 nm in thickness should support novel chiral states like skyrmions.

HRTEM, nano-beam electronic diffraction, energy dispersive X-rays scanning spectroscopy, Vibrating Sample Magnetometry (VSM) and FerroMagnetic Resonance (FMR) techniques are used in view of comparing (static and dynamic) magnetic and structural properties of Co2MnGe (13 nm)/Al2O3 (3 nm)/Co (13 nm) tunnel magnetic junctions (TMJ), deposited on various single crystalline substrates (a-plane sapphire, MgO(100) and Si(111)). They allow for providing a correlation between these magnetic properties and the fine structure investigated at atomic scale. The Al2O3 tunnel barrier is always amorphous and contains a large concentration of Co atoms, which, however, is significantly reduced when using a sapphire substrate. The Co layer is polycrystalline and shows larger grains for films grown on a sapphire substrate. The VSM investigation reveals in-plane anisotropy only for samples grown on a sapphire substrate. The FMR spectra of the TMJs are compared to the obtained ones with a single Co and Co2MnGe films of identical thickness deposited on a sapphire substrate. As expected, two distinct modes are detected in the TMJs while only one mode is observed in each single film. For the TMJ grown on a sapphire substrate the FMR behavior does not significantly differ from the superposition of the individual spectra of the single films, allowing for concluding that the exchange coupling between the two magnetic layers is too small to give rise to observable shifts. For TMJs grown on a Si or on a MgO substrate the resonance spectra reveal one mode which is nearly identical to the obtained one in the single Co film, while the other observed resonance shows a considerably smaller intensity and cannot be described using the magnetic parameters appropriate to the single Co2MnGe film.

We study static and dynamic magnetic properties of Co2MnGe (13 nm)/Al2O3 (3 nm)/Co (13 nm) tunnel magnetic junctions (TMJ), deposited on various single crystalline substrates (a-plane sapphire, MgO(100), Si(111)). The results are compared to the magnetic properties of Co and of Co$_{2}$MnGe single films lying on sapphire substrates. X-rays diffraction always shows a (110) orientation of the Co$_{2}$MnGe films. Structural observations obtained by high resolution transmission electron microscopy confirmed the high quality of the TMJ grown on sapphire. Our vibrating sample magnetometry measurements reveal in-plane anisotropy only in samples grown on a sapphire substrate. Depending on the substrate, the ferromagnetic resonance spectra of the TMJs, studied by the microstrip technique, show one or two pseudo-uniform modes. In the case of MgO and of Si substrates only one mode is observed: it is described by magnetic parameters (g-factor, effective magnetization, in-plane magnetic anisotropy) derived in the frame of a simple expression of the magnetic energy density; these parameters are practically identical to those obtained for the Co single film. With a sapphire substrate two modes are present: one of them does not appreciably differ from the observed mode in the Co single film while the other one is similar to the mode appearing in the Co$_{2}$MnGe single film: their magnetic parameters can thus be determined independently, using a classical model for the energy density in the absence of interlayer exchange coupling.

Microstrip ferromagnetic resonance and Brillouin scattering are used to provide a comparative determination of the magnetic parameters of thin permalloy layers interfaced with a non-magnetic (Al2O3) or with an antiferromagnetic oxide (NiO). It is shown that the perpendicular anisotropy is monitored by an interfacial surface energy term which is practically independent of the nature of the interface. In the investigated interval of thicknesses (5-25 nm) the saturation magnetisation does not significantly differ from the reported one in bulk permalloy. In-plane uniaxial anisotropy and exchange-bias anisotropy are also derived from this study of the dynamic magnetic excitations and compared to our independent evaluations using conventional magnetometry

The broadband microstrip ferromagnetic resonance technique has been applied for detection and characterization of a magnetic inhomogeneity in a film sample. In the case of a 100nm thick Permalloy film an additional magnetically depleted top sub-layer, practically unidentifiable by the conventional ferromagnetic resonance setup, has been detected and characterized. These results have been confirmed by Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy revealing the fact that the optical properties of the additional sub-layer do not differ much from those of the bulk of the film. Subsequent characterization of a large number of other presumably single-layer films with thicknesses in the range 30-100nm using the same ferromagnetic resonance technique also revealed the same effect.

Magnetic properties of CoMnGe thin films of different thicknesses (13, 34, 55, 83, 100 and 200 nm), grown by RF sputtering at 400°C on single crystal sapphire substrates, were studied using vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) and conventional or micro-strip line (MS) ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). Their behavior is described assuming a magnetic energy density showing twofold and fourfold in-plane anisotropies with some misalignment between their principal directions. For all the samples, the easy axis of the fourfold anisotropy is parallel to the c-axis of the substrate while the direction of the twofold anisotropy easy axis varies from sample to sample and seems to be strongly influenced by the growth conditions. Its direction is most probably monitored by the slight unavoidable angle of miscut the Al2O3 substrate. The twofold in-plane anisotropy field is almost temperature independent, in contrast with the fourfold field which is a decreasing function of the temperature. Finally, we study the frequency dependence of the observed line-width of the resonant mode and we conclude to a typical Gilbert dam** constant of 0.0065 for the 55-nm-thick film.
