Possible mixing of a diquark-antidiquark with a $p \bar p$ hadronic molecule

Abstract:
We discuss the possibility that the two nearby resonances observed by BESIII partially below the \,$p\bar p$\, threshold might be due to mixing between two metastable states with the same $J^{PC}=0^{-+}$ quantum numbers, but rather different internal structure. One is a $p \bar p$ hadronic molecule and the other a bound state of a light-quark diquark and an antidiquark, both with spin 1 and isospin 0, a composite color antitriplet and triplet, respectively. The doubling of resonances, one of which may be interpreted as a hadronic molecule, while the other arises from $q \bar q$ annihilation in a state with vacuum quantum numbers may be a more general feature than the specific case considered here.

Excited $Ω_c$ baryons as 2S states
Authors:

Abstract:
The LHCb experiment has recently reported two excited $Ω_c$ resonances decaying to $Ξ_c^+ K^-$, with masses about 3185 and 3327 MeV. We discuss their assignment to $2S_{1/2}$ and $2S_{3/2}$ states, which can be compared with masses based on extrapolation from the observed 1S states. The agreement is not perfect, but weighs against an earlier alternative assignment.

In recent years there has been a rapidly growing body of experimental evidence for existence of exotic, multiquark hadrons, i.e. mesons which contain additional quarks, beyond the usual quark-antiquark pair and baryons which consist of more than three quarks. In all cases with robust evidence they contain at least one heavy quark Q=c or b, the majority including two heavy quarks. Two key theoretical questions have been triggered by these discoveries: (a) how are quarks organized inside these multiquark states -- as compact objects with all quarks within one confinement volume, interacting via color forces, perhaps with an important role played by diquarks, or as deuteron-like hadronic molecules, bound by light-meson exchange? (b) what other multiquark states should we expect? The two questions are tightly intertwined. Each of the interpretations provides a natural explanation of parts of the data, but neither explains all of the data. It is quite possible that both kinds of structures appear in Nature. It may also be the case that certain states are superpositions of the compact and molecular configurations. This Whitepaper brings together contributions from many leading practitioners in the field, representing a wide spectrum of theoretical interpretations. We discuss the importance of future experimental and phenomenological work, which will lead to better understandingof multiquark phenomena in QCD.

A study of initial-state gluon radiation (ISR) in hadron collisions is presented using Drell-Yan (DY) events produced in proton-antiproton collisions by the Tevatron collider at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. This paper adopts a novel approach which uses the mean value of the Z/$γ^*$ transverse momentum $<p_T^{DY}>$ in DY events as a powerful observable to characterize the effect of ISR. In a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the CDF Run II detector, $<p_T^{DY}>$ is measured as a function of the Z/$γ^*$ invariant mass. It is found that these two observables have a dependence, $<p_T^{DY}> = -8 + 2.2 \ln m_{DY}^2$ [GeV/c], where $m_{DY}$ is the value of the Z/$γ^*$ mass measured in units of GeV/$c^2$. This linear dependence is observed for the first time in this analysis. It may be exploited to model the effect of ISR and constrain its impact in other processes.

Abstract:
The LHCb experiment at CERN has discovered a doubly charmed isoscalar tetraquark $T_{cc}$ with the quantum numbers of $c c \bar u \bar d$ and mass of about 3875 MeV/$c^2$, decaying to $D^0 D^0 π^+$ through the intermediate channel $D^{*+} D^0$. We present a study of its strange companions with the quantum numbers of $c c \bar q \bar s$, where $q = u, d$ and isospin violation is neglected.

In this note we examine the possibility that these two states are distinct eigenstates of a mixing process similar to that which gives rise to two axial-vector mesons labeled by the Particle Data Group $K_1(1270)$ and $K_1(1400)$. The main point is that on top of a $\bar c c$ pair, the $Z_{cs}$ states have the same light quark content as the $K_1$-s. In the compact tetraquark picture this implies several additional states, analogous to members of the $K_1$ nonet. These states have not yet been observed, nor are they required in the molecular approach. Thus experimental discovery or exclusion of these extra states will be a critical test for competing models of exotic mesons with hidden charm.

At the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton ($p\bar{p}$) collider, high-mass electron-neutrino ($eν$) pairs are produced predominantly in the process $p \bar{p} \rightarrow W(\rightarrow eν) + X$. The asymmetry of the electron and positron yield as a function of their pseudorapidity constrain the slope of the ratio of the $u$- to $d$-quark parton distributions versus the fraction of the proton momentum carried by the quarks. This paper reports on the measurement of the electron-charge asymmetry using the full data set recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab in 2001--2011 and corresponding to 9.1~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The measurement significantly improves the precision of the Tevatron constraints on the parton-distribution functions of the proton. Numerical tables of the measurement are provided.

The main peak around 6.9 GeV is likely dominated by the $0^{++}(2S)$ state, a radial excitation of the $cc$-$\bar c \bar c$ tetraquark, which we predict at $6.871\pm 0.025$ GeV. The dip around 6.75 GeV is ascribed to the opening of the \Swave\ di-$χ_{c0}$ channel, while the dip around 7.2 GeV could be correlated with the opening of the di-$η_c(2S)$ or $Ξ_{cc} \bar Ξ_{cc}$ channel. The low-mass part of the di-$J/ψ$ structure appears to require a broad resonance consistent with a predicted $2^{++}(1S)$ state with invariant mass around $M_{\rm inv} = 6400$ MeV. Implications for $bb \bar b \bar b$ tetraquarks are discussed.

We favor identifying the observed states as those those with spins 1/2 and 3/2, and give a range of predicted masses for the one with spin 5/2. We update earlier predictions for these states based on the five narrow excited $Ω_c$ states reported by LHCb. An alternative picture of the states in which one of $J=1/2$ is extremely wide and hence not seen by LHCb is discussed.

The relation between motion in $-1/r$ and $r^{2}$ potentials, known since Newton, can be demonstrated by the substitution $r\rightarrow r^{2}$ in the classical/quantum radial equations of the Kepler/Hydrogen problems versus the harmonic oscillator. This suggests a duality-type relationship between these systems. However, when both radial and angular components of these systems are included the possibility of a true duality seems to be remote. Indeed, investigations that explored and generalized Newton's radial relation, including algebraic approaches based on noncompact groups such as SO(4,2), have never exhibited a full duality consistent with Newton's. On the other hand, 2T-physics predicts a host of dualities between pairs of a huge set of systems that includes Newton's two systems. These dualities take the form of rather complicated canonical transformations that relate the full phase spaces of these respective systems in all directions. In this paper we focus on Newton's case by imposing his radial relation to find an appropriate basis for 2T-physics dualities, and then construct the full duality. Using the techniques of 2T-physics, we discuss the hidden symmetry of the actions (beyond the symmetry of Hamiltonians) for the Hydrogen atom in $D$-dimensions and the harmonic oscillator in $\bar{D}$ dimensions. The symmetries lead us to find the one-to-one relation between the quantum states, including angular degrees of freedom, for specific values of $\left( D,\bar{D}\right) $, and construct the explicit quantum canonical transformation in those special cases. We find that the canonical transformation has itself a hidden gauge symmetry that is crucial for the respective phase spaces to be dual even when $D\neq\bar{D}$. In this way we display the surprising beautiful symmetry of the full duality that generalizes Newton's radial duality.

Baryons with one or more heavy quarks have been shown, in the context of a nonrelativistic description, to exhibit mass inequalities under permutations of their quarks, when spin averages are taken. These inequalities sometimes are invalidated when spin-dependent forces are taken into account. A notable instance is the inequality $2E(Mmm) > E(MMm) + E(mmm)$, where $m = m_u = m_d$, satisfied for $M = m_b$ or $M = m_c$ but not for $M = m_s$, unless care is taken to remove effects of spin-spin interactions. Thus in the quark-level analog of nuclear fusion, the reactions $Λ_b Λ_b \to Ξ_{bb}N$ and $Λ_c Λ_c \to Ξ_{cc}^{++}n$ are exothermic, releasing respectively 138 and 12 MeV, while $ΛΛ\to ΞN$ is endothermic, requiring an input of between 23 and 29 MeV. Here we explore such mass inequalities in the context of an approach, previously shown to predict masses successfully, in which contributions consist of additive constituent-quark masses, spin-spin interactions, and additional binding terms for pairs each member of which is at least as heavy as a strange quark.

We report on a search for a spin-zero non-standard-model particle in proton-antiproton collisions collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at a center-of-mass-energy of 1.96 TeV. This particle, the $φ$ boson, is expected to decay into a bottom-antibottom quark pair and to be produced in association with at least one bottom quark. The data sample consists of events with three jets identified as initiated by bottom quarks and corresponds to $5.4~\text{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. In each event, the invariant mass of the two most energetic jets is studied by looking for deviations from the multijet background, which is modeled using data. No evidence is found for such particle. Exclusion upper limits ranging from 20 to 2 pb are set for the product of production cross sections times branching fraction for hypothetical $φ$ boson with mass between 100 and 300 GeV/$c^2$. These are the most stringent constraints to date.

Motivated by the success of the flavour physics programme carried out over the last decade at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), we characterize in detail the physics potential of its High-Luminosity and High-Energy upgrades in this domain of physics. We document the extraordinary breadth of the HL/HE-LHC programme enabled by a putative Upgrade II of the dedicated flavour physics experiment LHCb and the evolution of the established flavour physics role of the ATLAS and CMS general purpose experiments. We connect the dedicated flavour physics programme to studies of the top quark, Higgs boson, and direct high-$p_T$ searches for new particles and force carriers. We discuss the complementarity of their discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model, affirming the necessity to fully exploit the LHC's flavour physics potential throughout its upgrade eras.

Scaling of P-wave excitation energies in heavy-quark systems
Authors:

Abstract:
A simple regularity in anticipating P-wave excitation energies of states with heavy quarks is noted. It can apply to systems such as the negative-parity $Σ_c$, $Σ_b$, and $Ω_c$, $\bar Q Q$ quarkonia, and the bottom-charmed meson $B_c$. When one subtracts a term accounting for phenomenological energies of heavy quarks binding with one another in S-waves, the residual excitation energies display an…

Abstract:
An earlier analysis of observed and anticipated $Λ_c$ decays [M. Gronau and J. L. The $W$ boson is identified through its leptonic decays into electron and muon. The production cross sections are measured for each leptonic decay mode and combined after testing that the ratio of the $W(\rightarrow μν)+$jets cross section to the $W(\rightarrow eν)+$jets cross section agrees with the hypothesis of $e$-$μ$ lepton universality. The combination of measured cross sections, differential in the inclusive jet multiplicity ($W+\geqslant N$ jets with $N=1,\,2,\,3, \textrm{or }4$) and in the transverse energy of the leading jet, are compared with theoretical predictions.

This data set, collected at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=$1.96 TeV, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4~\rm{fb}^{-1}$, is used to measure the $Z$-boson production cross section times branching ratio into $b\bar{b}$. The number of $Z\rightarrow b\bar{b}$ events is determined by fitting the dijet-mass distribution while constraining the dominant $b$-jet background, originating from QCD multijet events, with data. The result, $σ(p\bar{p} \rightarrow Z) \times \mathcal{B}(Z \rightarrow b\bar{b})= 1.11\pm 0.08(\text{stat}) \pm 0.14(\text{syst})~\text{nb}$, is the most precise measurement of this process, and is consistent with the standard-model prediction. The data set is also used to search for Higgs-boson production. No significant signal is expected in our data and the first upper limit on the cross section for the inclusive $p\bar p \rightarrow H\rightarrow b\bar b$ process at $\sqrt{s}=$1.96 TeV is set, corresponding to 33 times the expected standard-model cross section, or $σ= 40.6$ pb, at the 95\% confidence level.

Mesons and baryons would then have integral charges. Mesons such as $qq \bar q \bar q$ and baryons such as $qqqq \bar q$ would also have integral charges. Why weren't they seen? They have now been seen, but only with additional heavy quarks and under conditions which tell us a lot about the strong interactions and how they manifest themselves. The present article describes recent progress in our understanding of such "exotic" mesons and baryons.

The $T(bb\bar u\bar d)$ is therefore stable under strong and electromagnetic (EM) interactions and can only decay weakly, the first exotic hadron with such a property. On the other hand, the mass of $T(cc\bar u\bar d)$ with $J^P{=}1^+$ is predicted to be $3882\pm12$ MeV, 7 MeV above the $D^0 D^{*+}$ threshold and 148 MeV above $D^0 D^+ γ$ threshold. $T(bc\bar u\bar d)$ with $J^P{=}0^+$ is predicted at $7134\pm13$ MeV, 11 MeV below the $\bar B^0 D^0$ threshold. Our precision is not sufficient to determine whether $bc\bar u\bar d\,$ is actually above or below the threshold. It could manifest itself as a narrow resonance just at threshold.

We find: \hbox{(1) The} cross section for $J/ψ~n$ photoproduction should be equal to that for $J/ψ~p$ photoproduction if these processes are dominated by the photon coupling to a $c\bar c$ pair. In that case the two processes are equal by isospin reflection. (2) If a $P_c^+$ candidate is a genuine $c \bar c u u d$ resonance, its isospin partner $P_c^0 = c \bar c d d u$ should have the same mass (again by isospin reflection). (3) In the absence of Fermi motion, the cross section for photoproduction of $P_c$ off a deuteron should be nearly the sum of two equal cross sections: $σ(γp \to P_c^+)$ (spectator $n$) and $σ(γn \to P_c^0)$ (spectator $p$). (4) The effects of Fermi motion are significant. They include smearing, form-factor suppression and offshellness. The upshot is that the resonance is significantly wider and the peak cross section off a deuteron is expected to be considerably less than twice that in $γp$.

Recently LHCb reported the discovery of five extremely narrow excited $Ω_c$ baryons decaying into $Ξ_c^+ K^-$. We interpret these baryons as bound states of a $c$-quark and a $P$-wave $ss$-diquark. For such a system there are exactly five possible combinations of spin and orbital angular momentum. The narrowness of the states could be a signal that it is hard to pull apart the two $s$-quarks in a diquark. We predict two of spin 1/2, two of spin 3/2, and one of spin 5/2, all with negative parity. Of the five states two can decay in $S$-wave and three can decay in $D$-wave. Some of the $D$-wave states might be narrower than the $S$-wave states. We discuss relations among the five masses expected in the quark model and the likely spin assignments and compare with the data. A similar pattern is expected for negative-parity excited $Ω_b$ states. An alternative interpretation is noted in which the heaviest two states are $2S$ excitations with $J^P = 1/2^+$ and $3/2^+$, while the lightest three are those with $J^P = 3/2^-,3/2^-,5/2^-$ expected to decay via $D$-waves. In this case we expect $J^P = 1/2^-$ $Ω_c$ states around 2904 and 2978 MeV.

A measurement of the inclusive production cross section of isolated prompt photons in proton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$=1.96TeV is presented. The results are obtained using the full Run II data sample collected with the Collider Detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9.5fb$^{-1}$. The cross section is measured as a function of photon transverse energy, $E_T^γ$, in the range 30$ < E_T^γ <$500GeV and in the pseudorapidity region $|η^γ|<$1.0. The results are compared with predictions from parton-shower Monte Carlo models at leading order in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and from next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The latter show good agreement with the measured cross section.

It has been pointed out that the currently most precise determination of the weak phase $φ_2 = α$ of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix achieved in $B \to ρρ$ decays is susceptible to a small correction at a level of $(Γ_ρ/m_ρ)^2$ due to an $I=1$ amplitude caused by the $ρ$ width. Using Breit-Wigner distributions for the two pairs of pions forming $ρ$ mesons, we study the $I=1$ contribution to $B\to ρρ$ decay rates as function of the width and location of the $ρ$ band. We find that in the absence of a particular enhancement of the $I=1$ amplitude reducing a single band to a width $Γ_ρ$ at SuperKEKB leads to results which are completely insensitive to the $ρ$ width. If the $I=1$ amplitude is dynamically enhanced relative to the $I=0,2$ amplitude one could subject its contribution to a "magnifying glass" measurement using two separated $ρ$ bands of width $Γ_ρ$. Subtraction of the $I=1$ contribution from the measured decay rate would lead to a very precise determination of the $I=0,2$ amplitude needed for performing the isospin analysis.

We obtain $M_{(cc)(\bar c \bar c)} = 6,192 \pm 25$ MeV and $M_{(bb)(\bar b \bar b)} = 18,826 \pm 25$ MeV, for the charmed and bottom tetraquarks, respectively. Experimental search for these states in the relevant mass region is highly desirable.

We report on a measurement of the $D^{+}$-meson production cross section as a function of transverse momentum ($p_T$) in proton-antiproton ($p\bar{p}$) collisions at 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy, using the full data set collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab in Tevatron Run II and corresponding to 10 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We use $D^{+} \to K^-π^+π^+$ decays fully reconstructed in the central rapidity region $|y|<1$ with transverse momentum down to 1.5 GeV/$c$, a range previously unexplored in $p\bar{p}$ collisions. Inelastic $p\bar{p}$-scattering events are selected online using minimally-biasing requirements followed by an optimized offline selection. The $K^-π^+π^+$ mass distribution is used to identify the $D^+$ signal, and the $D^+$ transverse impact-parameter distribution is used to separate prompt production, occurring directly in the hard scattering process, from secondary production from $b$-hadron decays. We obtain a prompt $D^+$ signal of 2950 candidates corresponding to a total cross section $σ(D^+, 1.5 < p_T < 14.5~\mbox{GeV/}c, |y|<1) = 71.9 \pm 6.8 (\mbox{stat}) \pm 9.3 (\mbox{syst})~μ$b. While the measured cross sections are consistent with theoretical estimates in each $p_T$ bin, the shape of the observed $p_T$ spectrum is softer than the expectation from quantum chromodynamics. The results are unique in $p\bar{p}$ collisions and can improve the shape and uncertainties of future predictions.

Reducing the errors on $B \to ρρ$ measurements by a factor of two can potentially lead to an error in $φ_2 = α$ just above $2^\circ$, at which level isospin-breaking corrections must be considered.

Some previous discussions of these features are updated and extended. Their relevance to present searches at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and in patterns of neutrino masses is noted. Addition of a small set of scalar bosons at the TeV scale permits gauge unification near a scale of $10^{16}$ GeV, and leads to bounds on masses of particles beyond those in the standard model.

This analysis uses the full data set collected with the CDF II detector during Run II of the Tevatron collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb$^{-1}$. An analysis of the dijet mass spectrum provides $3.7σ$ evidence of the summed production processes of either {\it WW} or {\it WZ} bosons with a measured total cross section of $σ_{WW+WZ} = 13.7\pm 3.9$~pb. Independent measurements of the {\it WW} and {\it WZ} production cross sections are allowed by the different heavy-flavor decay-patterns of the $W$ and $Z$ bosons and by the analysis of secondary-decay vertices reconstructed within heavy-flavor jets. The productions of {\it WW} and of {\it WZ} dibosons are independently seen with significances of $2.9σ$ and $2.1σ$, respectively, with total cross sections of $σ_{WW}= 9.4\pm 4.2$~pb and $σ_{WZ}=3.7^{+2.5}_{-2.2}$~pb. The measurements are consistent with standard-model predictions.

At the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton ($p\bar{p}$) collider, Drell-Yan lepton pairs are produced in the process $p \bar{p} \rightarrow e^+e^- + X$ through an intermediate $γ^*/Z$ boson. The forward-backward asymmetry in the polar-angle distribution of the $e^-$ as a function of the $e^+e^-$-pair mass is used to obtain $\sin^2θ^{\rm lept}_{\rm eff}$, the effective leptonic determination of the electroweak-mixing parameter $\sin^2θ_W$. The measurement sample, recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF), corresponds to 9.4~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity from $p\bar{p}$ collisions at a center-of-momentum energy of 1.96 TeV, and is the full CDF Run II data set. The value of $\sin^2θ^{\rm lept}_{\rm eff}$ is found to be $0.23248 \pm 0.00053$. The combination with the previous CDF measurement based on $μ^+μ^-$ pairs yields $\sin^2θ^{\rm lept}_{\rm eff} = 0.23221 \pm 0.00046$. This result, when interpreted within the specified context of the standard model assuming $\sin^2 θ_W = 1 - M_W^2/M_Z^2$ and that the $W$- and $Z$-boson masses are on-shell, yields $\sin^2θ_W = 0.22400 \pm 0.00045$, or equivalently a $W$-boson mass of $80.328 \pm 0.024 \;{\rm GeV}/c^2$.

Using a successful framework for describing S-wave hadronic decays of light hyperons induced by a subprocess $s \to u (\bar u d)$, we presented recently a model-independent calculation of the amplitude and branching ratio for $Ξ^-_b \to Λ_b π^-$ in agreement with a LHCb measurement. The same quark process contributes to $Ξ^0_c \to Λ_c π^-$, while a second term from the subprocess $cs \to cd$ has been related by Voloshin to differences among total decay rates of charmed baryons. We calculate this term and find it to have a magnitude approximately equal to the $s \to u (\bar u d)$ term. We argue for a negligible relative phase between these two contributions, potentially due to final state interactions. However, we do not know whether they interfere destructively or constructively. For constructive interference one predicts ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Λ_c π^-) = (1.94 \pm 0.70)\times 10^{-3}$ and ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^+ \to Λ_c π^0) = (3.86 \pm 1.35)\times 10^{-3}$. For destructive interference, the respective branching fractions are expected to be less than about $10^{-4}$ and $2 \times 10^{-4}$.

We measure the forward--backward asymmetry of the production of top quark and antiquark pairs in proton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 1.96~\mathrm{TeV}$ using the full data set collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) in Tevatron Run II corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9.1~\rm{fb}^{-1}$. The asymmetry is characterized by the rapidity difference between top quarks and antiquarks ($Δy$), and measured in the final state with two charged leptons (electrons and muons). The inclusive asymmetry, corrected to the entire phase space at parton level, is measured to be $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}} = 0.12 \pm 0.13$, consistent with the expectations from the standard-model (SM) and previous CDF results in the final state with a single charged lepton. The combination of the CDF measurements of the inclusive $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}}$ in both final states yields $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}}=0.160\pm0.045$, which is consistent with the SM predictions. We also measure the differential asymmetry as a function of $Δy$. A linear fit to $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}}(|Δy|)$, assuming zero asymmetry at $Δy=0$, yields a slope of $α=0.14\pm0.15$, consistent with the SM prediction and the previous CDF determination in the final state with a single charged lepton. The combined slope of $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}}(|Δy|)$ in the two final states is $α=0.227\pm0.057$, which is $2.0σ$ larger than the SM prediction.

Channels in which this mechanism is possible are identified, and suggestions are made for searches for the corresponding molecular states, including a manifestly exotic baryonic $Λ_c \bar D_s^*$ resonance decaying into $J/ψ~Λ$.

In contrast to most weak decays of $b$-flavored baryons, this process involves the decay of the strange quark in $Ξ_b$, and thus has features in common with nonleptonic weak decays of hyperons. Thanks to the expected pure S-wave nature of the decay in question in the heavy $b$ quark limit, we find that its amplitude may be related to those for S-wave nonleptonic decays of $Λ$, $Σ$, and $Ξ$ in a picture inspired by duality. The calculated branching fraction ${\cal B}(Ξ^-_b \to π^- Λ_b) = (6.3 \pm 4.2) \times 10^{-3}$ is consistent with the range allowed in the LHCb analysis. The error is dominated by an assumed 30\% uncertainty in the amplitude due to possible U(3) violation. A more optimistic view based on sum rules involving nonleptonic hyperon decay S-wave amplitudes reduces the error on the branching fraction to $2.0 \times 10^{-3}$.

We review the physics of purely leptonic decays of $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $D^{\pm}$, $D_s^\pm$, and $B^\pm$ pseudoscalar mesons. The measured decay rates are related to the product of the relevant weak-interaction-based CKM matrix element of the constituent quarks and a strong interaction parameter related to the overlap of the quark and antiquark wave-functions in the meson, called the decay constant $f_P$. The leptonic decay constants for $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $D^{\pm}$, $D_s^\pm$, and $B^\pm$ mesons can be obtained with controlled theoretical uncertainties and high precision from {\it ab initio} lattice-QCD simulations. The combination of experimental leptonic decay-rate measurements and theoretical decay-constant calculations enables the determination of several elements of the CKM matrix within the standard model. These determinations are competitive with those obtained from semileptonic decays, and also complementary because they are sensitive to different quark flavor-changing currents. They can also be used to test the unitarity of the first and second rows of the CKM matrix. Conversely, taking the CKM elements predicted by unitarity, one can infer "experimental" values for $f_P$ that can be compared with theory. These provide tests of lattice-QCD methods, provided new-physics contributions to leptonic decays are negligible at the current level of precision. This review is the basis of the article in the Particle Data Group's 2016 edition, updating the versions in Refs. [1-3].
