The chiral knife edge: a simplified rattleback to illustrate spin inversion
Abstract: We present the chiral knife edge rattleback, an alternative version of previously presented systems that exhibit spin inversion. We offer a full treatment of the model using qualitative arguments, analytical solutions as well as numerical results. We treat a reduced, one--mode problem which not only contains the essence of the physics of spin inversion, but that also exhibits an unexpected connect… ▽ More

Matrix exponential solution of the Landau-Zener problem
Abstract: We present a derivation of the Landau-Zener solution through the explicit evaluation of the time ordered propagator. The result is exact and does not involve the solution of the differential equation for the spin amplitudes.

The rolling sphere and the quantum spin
Abstract: We consider the problem of a sphere rolling of a curved surface and solve it by map** it to the precession of a spin 1/2 in a magnetic field of variable magnitude and direction. The map** can be of pedagogical use in discussing both rolling and spin precession, and in particular in understanding the emergence of geometrical phases in classical problems.

The Parallelometer: a mechanical device to study curvature
Abstract: A simple mechanical device is introduced, the parallelometer, that can be used to measure curvatures of surfaces. The device can be used as a practical illustration of parallel transport of a vector and to study Berry phase shift when it is carried along a loop on the surface. Its connection to the Foucault pendulum is discussed. The experimental results can be successfully compared with the the… ▽ More

A Cold Atomic Fermi Gas with a Spatially Modulated Interaction
Abstract: We study an ultra-cold atomic Fermi Gas with the atom-atom interaction modulated periodically in space. A novel ground state with cooper pairs occupying non-zero center of mass momenta is found. Such a state is closely related to the state proposed by Fulde, Ferrell, Larkin, and Ovchinnikov(FFLO). The resultant single particle excitations with momenta along the direction of the modulation shows… ▽ More

A Tonks Giradeau Gas in the Presence of a Local Potential
Abstract: The physics of a Tonks-Giradeau Gas in the presence of a local potential is studied. In order to evaluate the single particle density matrix (SPDM) of the many-body ground state, the Wiger-Jordan transformation is used. The eigenvector with the largest eigenvalue of the SPDM corresponds to the "Bose-Einstein Condensate"(BEC) State. We find that the "BEC" state density at the positon of the local… ▽ More

Hamilton's principle: why is the integrated difference of kinetic and potential energy minimized?
Abstract: I present an intuitive answer to an often asked question: why is the integrated difference K-U between the kinetic and potential energy the quantity to be minimized in Hamilton's principle? Using elementary arguments, I map the problem of finding the path of a moving particle connecting two points to that of finding the minimum potential energy of a static string. The map** implies that the c… ▽ More

Spin squeezing via atom - cavity field coupling
Abstract: Spin squeezing via atom-field interactions is considered within the context of the Tavis-Cummings model. An ensemble of N two-level atoms interacts with a quantized cavity field. For all the atoms initially in their ground states, it is shown that spin squeezing of both the atoms and the field can be achieved provided the initial state of the cavity field has coherence between number states diff… ▽ More

Optimally squeezed spin states
Abstract: We consider optimally spin-squeezed states that maximize the sensitivity of the Ramsey spectroscopy, and for which the signal to noise ratio scales as the number of particles $N$. Using the variational principle we prove that these states are eigensolutions of the Hamiltonian $ H(λ)=λS_z^2-S_x, $ and that, for large $N$, the states become equivalent to the quadrature squeezed states of the harmo… ▽ More

Gyroscopic Classical and Quantum Oscillators interacting with Heat Baths
Abstract: We analyze the stability of a gyroscopic oscillator interacting with a finite- and infinite-dimensional heat bath in both the classical and quantum cases. We consider a finite gyroscopic oscillator model of a particle in a magnetic field and examine the stability before and after coupling to a heat bath. It is shown that if the oscillator is gyroscopically stable, coupling to a sufficiently mass… ▽ More

Instabilities in a Two-Component, Species Conserving Condensate
Abstract: We consider a system of two species of bosons of equal mass, with interactions $U^{a}(|x|)$ and $U^{x}(|x|)$ for bosons of the same and different species respectively. We present a rigorous proof -- valid when the Hamiltonian does not include a species switching term -- showing that, when $U^{x}(|x|)>U^{a}(|x|)$, the ground state is fully "polarized" (consists of atoms of one kind only). Coulomb Drag between One-Dimensional Wigner Crystal Rings
Abstract: We consider the Coulomb drag between two metal rings in which the long range Coulomb interaction leads to the formation of a Wigner crystal. The first ring is threaded by an Ahranov Bohm flux creating a persistent current J_0. The second ring is brought in close proximity to the second and due to the Coulomb interaction between the two rings a drag current J_D is produced in the second. We inves… ▽ More

Ground State and Quasiparticle Spectrum of a Two Component Bose-Einstein Condensate
Abstract: We consider a dilute atomic Bose-Einstein condensate with two non-degenerate internal energy levels. The presence of an external radiation field can result in new ground states for the condensate which result from the lowering of the condensate energy due to the interaction energy with the field. In this approach there are no instabilities in the quasiparticle spectrum as was previously found by… ▽ More

Sequential fragmentation: The origin of columnar quasi-hexagonal patterns
Abstract: We present a model that explains the origin and predicts the statistical properties of columnar quasi-hexagonal crack patterns, as observed in the columnar jointing of basaltic lava flows. Irregular fractures appear at the surface of the material, induced by temperature gradients during cooling. At later times fractures penetrate into the material, and tend to form polygonal patterns. Control of Squeezed States
Abstract: In this paper we consider the classical and quantum control of squeezed states of harmonic oscillators. We consider also the interaction of a squeezed quantum oscillator with an external heat bath.

Effect of disorder on the non-dissipative drag
Abstract: In this paper we consider the effect of disorder on the non-dissipative Coulomb drag between two mesoscopic metal rings at zero temperature. Ring 1 has an Aharonov-Bohm flux present which creates a persistent current J_0. Ring 2 interacts with ring 1 via the Coulomb potential and a drag current, J_d is produced. We show that this drag current persists with finite disorder in each ring, and that… ▽ More
