SbPO4 is a complex monoclinic layered material characterized by a strong activity of the non-bonding lone electron pair (LEP) of Sb. The strong cation LEP leads to the formation of layers piled up along the a-axis and linked by weak Sb-O electrostatic interactions. In fact, Sb is 4-fold coordination with O similar to what occurs with the P-O coordination, despite the large difference of ionic radii and electronegativity between both elements. Here we report a joint experimental and theoretical study of the structural and vibrational properties of SbPO4 at high pressure. We show that SbPO4 is not only one of the most compressible phosphates but also one of the most compressible compounds of the ABO4 family. Moreover, it has a considerable anisotropic compression behavior with the largest compression occurring along a direction close to a-axis and governed by the compression of the LEP and the weak inter-layer Sb-O bonds. The strong compression along the a-axis leads to a subtle modification of the monoclinic crystal structure above 3 GPa leading from a 2D to a 3D material. Moreover, the onset of a reversible pressure-induced phase transition is observed above 9 GPa, which is completed above 20 GPa. We propose that the high-pressure phase is a triclinic distortion of the original monoclinic phase. The understanding of the compression mechanism of SbPO4 can aid in understanding the importance of the ion intercalation and catalytic properties of this layered compound.

Ferroelectric oxides have attracted much attention due to their wide range of applications, especially in electronic devices such as nonvolatile memories and tunnel junctions. As a result, the monolithic integration of these materials into silicon technology and its nanostructuration to develop alternative cost-effective processes are among the central points in current technology. In this work, we used a chemical route to obtain nanowire thin films of a novel Sr1+δMn8O16 (SMO) hollandite-type manganese oxide on silicon. Scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with crystallographic computing reveals a crystal structure comprising hollandite and pyrolusite units sharing the edges of their MnO6 octahedra, resulting in three types of tunnels arranged along the c axis, where ordering of the Sr atoms produces a natural symmetry breaking. The novel structure gives rise to a ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity, as revealed by local Direct Piezoelectric Force Microscopy measurements, which confirmed the ferroelectric nature of SMO nanowire thin films at room temperature and showed a piezoelectric coefficient d33 value of 22,6 pC/N. Moreover, we proved that flexible vertical SMO nanowires can be harvested and converted into electric output energy through the piezoelectric effect, showing an excellent deformability and high interface recombination. This work indicates the possibility of engineering the integration of 1D manganese oxides on silicon, a step which precedes the production of microelectronic devices.

The origin of the metal-to-insulator transition in RNiO3 perovskites with trivalent 4f ion has challenged the condensed matter research community for almost three decades. A drawback for progress in this direction has been the lack of studies combining physical properties and accurate structural data covering the full nickelate phase diagram. Here we focus on a small region close to the itinerant limit (R = Pr, 1.5K < T < 300K), where we investigate the gap opening and the simultaneous emergence of charge order in PrNiO3. We combine electric resistance, magnetization, and heat capacity measurements with high resolution neutron and synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction data that, in contrast to previous studies, we analyze in terms of symmetry-adapted distortion modes. Such analysis allows to identify the contribution of the different modes to the global distortion in a broad temperature range. Moreover, it shows that the structural changes at the MIT, traditionally described in terms of the evolution of the interatomic distances and angles, appear as abrupt increases of all nonzero mode amplitudes at TMIT = TN ~130K accompanied by the appearance of new modes below this temperature. A further interesting observation is the existence of a nearly perfect linear correlation between the amplitude of the breathing mode associated to the charge order and the staggered magnetization below the MIT. Our data also uncover a previously unnoticed anomaly at T* ~60K (~0.4 x TMIT), clearly visible in the electrical resistance, lattice parameters and some mode amplitudes. Since phase coexistence is only observed in a small temperature region around TMIT (~10K), these observations suggest the existence of a hidden symmetry in the insulating phase. We discuss some possible origins, among them the theoretically predicted existence of polar distortions induced by the non-centrosymmetric magnetic order.

Neutron spherical polarimetry, which is directly sensitive to the absolute magnetic configuration and domain population, has been used in this work to unambiguously prove the multiferroicity of (ND4)2[FeCl5(D2O)]. We demonstrate that the application of an electric field upon cooling results in the stabilization of a single-cycloidal magnetic domain below 6.9 K, while poling in the opposite electric field direction produces the full population of the domain with opposite magnetic chirality. We prove the complete switchability of the magnetic domains at low temperature by the applied electric field, which constitutes a direct proof of the strong magnetoelectric coupling. Additionally, we refine the magnetic structure of the ordered ground state, determining the underlying magnetic space group consistent with the direction of the ferroelectric polarization, and we provide evidence of a collinear amplitude-modulated state with magnetic moments along the a-axis in the temperature region between 6.9 and 7.2 K.

Our results describe an unprecedented example of change in the mechanism of magnetically-induced electric polarization from spin current to spin-dependent p-d hybridization model. We have followed the evolution of the magnetic structures of (ND4)2[FeCl5 D2O] compound using single crystal neutron diffraction under external magnetic field. The spin arrangements change from incommensurate cycloidal to commensurate distorted-cycloidal and finally to quasi-collinear. The determination of the magnetic structures allows us to explain the observed electric polarization in the different ferroelectric phases. Two different magneto-electric coupling mechanisms are at play: the spin-current mechanism for external magnetic field below 5 T, and the spin dependent p-d hybridization mechanism for magnetic field above this value, being this compound the first example reported presenting this sequence of magneto-electric coupling mechanisms.

Motivated by the recent observations of incommensurate magnetic order and electric polarization in YBaCuFeO5 up to temperatures TN2 as high as 230K [1,2] we report here for the first time a model for the incommensurate magnetic structure of this material that we complement with ab-initio calculations of the magnetic exchange parameters. Using neutron powder diffraction we show that the appearance of polarization below TN2 is accompanied by the replacement of the high temperature collinear magnetic order by a circular inclined spiral with propagation vector ki=(1/2, 1/2, 1/2+-q). Moreover, we find that the polarization approximately scales with the modulus of the magnetic modulation vector q down to the lowest temperature investigated (T=3K). Further, we observe occupational Fe/Cu disorder in the FeO5-CuO5 bipyramids, although a preferential occupation of such units by Fe-Cu pairs is supported by the observed magnetic order and by density functional calculations. We calculate exchange coupling constants for different Fe/Cu distributions and show that, for those containing Fe-Cu dimers, the resulting magnetic order is compatible with the experimentally observed collinear magnetic structure (kc=(1/2, 1/2, 1/2), TN2 > T > TN1 = 440K). Based on these results we discuss possible origins for the incommensurate modulation and its coupling with ferroelectricity.

We have succeeded to grow single crystals of compounds with Nd, Dy and Er and following our previous bulk measurements, we performed neutron-diffraction studies to determine their magnetic structures. The Laue diffraction experiment showed that the antiferromagnetic order below the Néel temperature is in all three compounds characterized by the propagation vector k = (1/2, 1/2, 1/2). The amplitude and direction of the magnetic moments, as well as the invariance symmetry of the magnetic structure, were determined by subsequent experiments using two- and four-circle diffractometers. The critical exponents were determined from the temperature dependence of the intensities below TN.

We present a combination of ab initio calculations, magnetic Compton scattering and polarized neutron experiments, which elucidate the density distribution of unpaired electrons in the kagome staircase system Co3V2O8. Ab initio wave functions were used to calculate the spin densities in real and momentum space, which show good agreement with the respective experiments. It has been found that the spin polarized orbitals are equally distributed between the t2g and the eg levels for the spine (s) Co ions, while the eg orbitals of the cross-tie (c) Co ions only represent 30% of the atomic spin density. Furthermore, the results reveal that the magnetic moments of the cross-tie Co ions, which are significantly smaller than those of the spine Co ions in the zero-field ferromagnetic structure, do not saturate by applying an external magnetic field of 2 T along the easy axis a, but that the increasing bulk magnetization originates from induced magnetic moments on the O and V sites. The refined individual magnetic moments are mu(Co_c)=1.54(4) mu_B, mu(Co_s)=2.87(3) mu_B, mu(V)=0.41(4) mu_B, mu(O1)=0.05(5) mu_B, mu(O2)=0.35(5) mu_B, and; mu(O3)=0.36(5) mu_B combining to the same macroscopic magnetization value, which was previously only attributed to the Co ions.

The analysis of the field expansion of the ac susceptibility and the observation of aging properties make clear that a spin glass phase appears below T = 39K, in the presence of magnetic order. Neutron scattering shows both magnetic Bragg scattering and magnetic diffusion at small angles, and confirms this coexistence. In contrast to Pr_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_3 (x=0.3-0.33) which exhibits a mesoscopic phase separation responsible for a field driven percolation, the glassy and short range ferromagnetic order observed here does not cause colossal magnetoresistance (CMR).

Magnetic order settles in two steps, with a smeared transition at 1.3(1) K then an abrupt transition at 0.87(2) K. A new magnetic structure is observed, not predicted by current models, with both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic character. It suggests that the spin liquid degeneracy is lifted by dipolar interactions combined with a finite anisotropy along $<111>$ axes. In the ground state, the Tb$^{3+}$ ordered moment is reduced with respect to the free ion moment (9 $μ\_{\rm B}$). The moment value of 3.3(3) $μ\_{\rm B}$ deduced from the specific heat is much smaller than derived from neutron diffraction of 5.9(1) $μ\_{\rm B}$. This difference is interpreted by the persistence of slow collective magnetic fluctuations down to the lowest temperatures.

All three materials display incommensurate antiferromagnetic ordering below 40 K, becoming commensurate on further cooling. For R = Tb, Ho, a commensurate-incommensurate transition takes place at low temperatures. The commensurate magnetic structures have been solved and are discussed in terms of competing exchange interactions. The spin configuration within the ab plane is essentially the same for each system, and the radius of R determines the sign of the magnetic exchange between adjacent planes. The inherent magnetic frustration in these materials is lifted by a small lattice distortion, primarily involving shifts of the Mn3+ cations and giving rise to a canted antiferroelectric phase.

A neutron scattering study of the superlattice {\bf Q$_0$}= (0,0,1+/4)$_{cub}$ peak, and of the magnetic excitations are reported in the x$_{Ca}$=0.2 sample. The occurrence of this superstructure is associated with the observation of a gap in the spin dynamics, at a {\bf q$_0$} wave-vector ({\bf q$_0$}={\bf Q$_0$}-$τ$) with the same modulus $|${\bf q$_0$}$|$ in all directions, which divides the dispersion into two regimes. For $|${\bf q}$|$$<$$|${\bf q$_0$}$|$ the dispersion is splitted into two or three curves. For $|${\bf q}$|$$>$$|${\bf q$_0$}$|$, magnetic excitations lock on acoustic and optic phonon energies, revealing a new kind of magneto-vibrational coupling.
We suggest an analysis in terms of two distinct magnetic couplings, associated with two ferromagnetic media involved into a collective state.

Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been performed in a La$_{0.94}$Sr$_{0.06}$MnO$_3$ untwinned crystal, which exhibits an antiferromagnetic canted magnetic structure with ferromagnetic layers.
The elastic small q scattering exhibits a modulation with an anisotropic q-dependence. It can be pictured by ferromagnetic inhomogeneities or polarons with a platelike shape, the largest size ($\approx17Å$) and largest inter-polaron distance ($\approx$ 38$Å$) being within the ferromagnetic layers. Comparison with observations performed on Ca-doped samples, which show the growth of the magnetic polarons with do**, suggests that this growth is faster for the Sr than for the Ca substitution. Below the gap of the spin wave branch typical of the AF layered magnetic structure, an additional spin wave branch reveals a ferromagnetic and isotropic coupling, already found in Ca-doped samples. Its q-dependent intensity, very anisotropic, closely reflects the ferromagnetic correlations found for the static clusters. All these results agree with a two-phase electronic segregation occurring on a very small scale, although some characteristics of a canted state are also observed suggesting a weakly inhomogeneous state.

Below TN, the observation of a broad magnetic modulation in the q-dependent scattering intensity, centered at nearly identical qm whatever the q direction, can be explained by a liquid-like spatial distribution of similar magnetic droplets. A semi-quantitative description of their magnetic state, diameter, and average distance, can be done using a two-phase model. Such a picture can explain the anomalous characteristics of the spin wave branches and may result from unmixing forces between charge carriers predicted from the s-d model.
