The LHCb upgrade represents a major change of the experiment. The detectors have been almost completely renewed to allow running at an instantaneous luminosity five times larger than that of the previous running periods. Readout of all detectors into an all-software trigger is central to the new design, facilitating the reconstruction of events at the maximum LHC interaction rate, and their selection in real time. The experiment's tracking system has been completely upgraded with a new pixel vertex detector, a silicon tracker upstream of the dipole magnet and three scintillating fibre tracking stations downstream of the magnet. The whole photon detection system of the RICH detectors has been renewed and the readout electronics of the calorimeter and muon systems have been fully overhauled. The first stage of the all-software trigger is implemented on a GPU farm. The output of the trigger provides a combination of totally reconstructed physics objects, such as tracks and vertices, ready for final analysis, and of entire events which need further offline reprocessing. This scheme required a complete revision of the computing model and rewriting of the experiment's software.

We study an optimal dividend problem under a bankruptcy constraint. Firms face a trade-off between potential bankruptcy and extraction of profits. In contrast to previous works, general cash flow drifts, including Ornstein--Uhlenbeck and CIR processes, are considered. We provide rigorous proofs of continuity of the value function, whence dynamic programming, as well as comparison between the sub- and supersolutions of the Hamilton--Jacobi--Bellman equation, and we provide an efficient and convergent numerical scheme for finding the solution. The value function is given by a nonlinear PDE with a gradient constraint from below in one dimension. We find that the optimal strategy is both a barrier and a band strategy and that it includes voluntary liquidation in parts of the state space. Finally, we present and numerically study extensions of the model, including equity issuance and credit lines.

For any family of $N\times N$ random matrices $(\mathbf{A}_k)_{k\in K}$ which is invariant, in law, under unitary conjugation, we give general sufficient conditions for central limit theorems for random variables of the type $\operatorname{Tr}(\mathbf{A}_k \mathbf{M})$, where the matrix $\mathbf{M}$ is deterministic (such random variables include for example the normalized matrix entries of the $\mathbf{A}_k$'s). A consequence is the asymptotic independence of the projection of the matrices $\mathbf{A}_k$ onto the subspace of null trace matrices from their projections onto the orthogonal of this subspace. These results are used to study the asymptotic behavior of the outliers of a spiked elliptic random matrix. More precisely, we show that the fluctuations of these outliers around their limits can have various rates of convergence, depending on the Jordan Canonical Form of the additive perturbation. Also, some correlations can arise between outliers at a macroscopic distance from each other. These phenomena have already been observed by Benaych-Georges and Rochet with random matrices from the Single Ring Theorem.

In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of the outliers of the sum a Hermitian random matrix and a finite rank matrix which is not necessarily Hermitian. We observe several possible convergence rates and outliers locating around their limits at the vertices of regular polygons as in a previous work by Benaych-Georges and Rochet, as well as possible correlations between outliers at macroscopic distance as in works by Knowles, Yin, Benaych-Georges and Rochet. We also observe that a single spike can generate several outliers in the spectrum of the deformed model, as already noticed in several previous works. In the particular case where the perturbation matrix is Hermitian, our results complete a previous work of Benaych-Georges, Guionnet and Maïda, as we consider fluctuations of outliers lying in "holes" of the limit support, which happen to exhibit surprising correlations.

A determination of the scintillation efficiency is crucial to quantify the response of the detector at low energy. We report the results obtained with a small liquid argon cell using a monoenergetic neutron beam produced by a deuterium-deuterium fusion source. The light yield relative to electrons was measured for six argon recoil energies between 11 and 120 keV at zero electric drift field.

We consider a non-Hermitian random matrix $A$ whose distribution is invariant under the left and right actions of the unitary group. The so-called Single Ring Theorem, proved by Guionnet, Krishnapur and Zeitouni, states that the empirical eigenvalue distribution of $A$ converges to a limit measure supported by a ring $S$. In this text, we establish the convergence in distribution of random variables of the type $Tr (f(A)M)$ where $f$ is analytic on $S$ and the Frobenius norm of $M$ has order $\sqrt{N}$. As corollaries, we obtain central limit theorems for linear spectral statistics of $A$ (for analytic test functions) and for finite rank projections of $f(A)$ (like matrix entries). As an application, we locate outliers in multiplicative perturbations of $A$.

This text is about spiked models of non Hermitian random matrices. More specifically, we consider matrices of the type $A+P$, where the rank of $P$ stays bounded as the dimension goes to infinity and where the matrix $A$ is a non Hermitian random matrix, satisfying an isotropy hypothesis: its distribution is invariant under the left and right actions of the unitary group. The macroscopic eigenvalue distribution of such matrices is governed by the so called Single Ring Theorem, due to Guionnet, Krishnapur and Zeitouni. We first prove that if $P$ has some eigenvalues out of the maximal circle of the single ring, then $A+P$ has some eigenvalues (called outliers) in the neighborhood of those of $P$, which is not the case for the eigenvalues of $P$ in the inner cycle of the single ring. Then, we study the fluctuations of the outliers of $A$ around the eigenvalues of $P$ and prove that they are distributed as the eigenvalues of some finite dimensional random matrices. Such facts had already been noticed for Hermitian models. More surprising facts are that outliers can here have very various rates of convergence to their limits (depending on the Jordan Canonical Form of $P$) and that some correlations can appear between outliers at a macroscopic distance from each other (a fact already noticed by Knowles and Yin in the Hermitian case, but only in the case of non Gaussian models, whereas spiked Gaussian matrices belong to our model and can have such correlated outliers). Our first result generalizes a previous result by Tao for matrices with i.i.d. entries, whereas the second one (about the fluctuations) is new.

For the development of liquid argon dark matter detectors we assembled a setup in the laboratory to scatter neutrons on a small liquid argon target. The neutrons are produced mono-energetically (E_kin=2.45 MeV) by nuclear fusion in a deuterium plasma and are collimated onto a 3" liquid argon cell operating in single-phase mode (zero electric field). Organic liquid scintillators are used to tag scattered neutrons and to provide a time-of-flight measurement. The setup is designed to study light pulse shapes and scintillation yields from nuclear and electronic recoils as well as from α-particles at working points relevant to dark matter searches. Liquid argon offers the possibility to scrutinise scintillation yields in noble liquids with respect to the populations of the two fundamental excimer states. Here we present experimental methods and first results from recent data towards such studies.

The Argon Dark Matter (ArDM-1t) experiment is a ton-scale liquid argon (LAr) double-phase time projection chamber designed for direct Dark Matter searches. Such a device allows to explore the low energy frontier in LAr with a charge imaging detector. The ionization charge is extracted from the liquid into the gas phase and there amplified by the use of a Large Electron Multiplier in order to reduce the detection threshold. Direct detection of the ionization charge with fine spatial granularity, combined with a measurement of the amplitude and time evolution of the associated primary scintillation light, provide powerful tools for the identification of WIMP interactions against the background due to electrons, photons and possibly neutrons if scattering more than once. A one ton LAr detector is presently installed on surface at CERN to fully test all functionalities and it will be soon moved to an underground location. We will emphasize here the lessons learned from such a device for the design of a large LAr TPC for neutrino oscillation, proton decay and astrophysical neutrinos searches.

In this paper we describe the experimental concept and present results on the light detection system, tested for the first time in ArDM on the surface at CERN. With a preliminary and incomplete set of PMTs, the light yield at zero electric field is found to be between 0.3-0.5 phe/keVee depending on the position within the detector volume, confirming our expectations based on smaller detector setups.

The observed enhancement at low relative momentum corresponds to the production of 173 $\pm$ 54 $πK$-atoms. The mean life of $πK$-atoms is related to the s-wave $πK$-scattering lengths, the measurement of which is the goal of the experiment. From these first data we derive a lower limit for the mean life of 0.8 fs at 90% confidence level.

To optimise the design of the light readout in the ArDM 1-ton liquid argon dark matter detector, a range of reflector and WLS coating combinations were investigated in several small setups, where argon scintillation light was generated by radioactive sources in gas at normal temperature and pressure and shifted into the blue region by tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB). Various thicknesses of TPB were deposited by spraying and vacuum evaporation onto specular 3M{\small\texttrademark}-foil and diffuse Tetratex{\small\textregistered} (TTX) substrates. Light yields of each reflector and TPB coating combination were compared. Reflection coefficients of TPB coated reflectors were independently measured using a spectroradiometer in a wavelength range between 200 and 650 nm. WLS coating on the PMT window was also studied. These measurements were used to define the parameters of the light reflectors of the ArDM experiment. Fifteen large $120\times 25$ cm$^2$ TTX sheets were coated and assembled in the detector. Measurements in argon gas are reported providing good evidence of fulfilling the light collection requirements of the experiment.

While develo** a liquid argon detector for dark matter searches we investigate the influence of air contamination on the VUV scintillation yield in gaseous argon at atmospheric pressure. We determine with a radioactive alpha-source the photon yield for various partial air pressures and different reflectors and wavelength shifters. We find for the fast scintillation component a time constant tau1= 11.3 +- 2.8 ns, independent of gas purity. However, the decay time of the slow component depends on gas purity and is a good indicator for the total VUV light yield. This dependence is attributed to impurities destroying the long-lived argon excimer states. The population ratio between the slowly and the fast decaying excimer states is determined for alpha-particles to be 5.5 +-0.6 in argon gas at 1100 mbar and room temperature. The measured mean life of the slow component is tau2 = 3.140 +- 0.067 microsec at a partial air pressure of 2 x 10-6 mbar.
