Integrable maps in 4D and modified Volterra lattices
Abstract: In recent work, we presented the construction of a family of difference equations associated with the Stieltjes continued fraction expansion of a certain function on a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$. As well as proving that each such discrete system is an integrable map in the Liouville sense, we also showed it to be an algebraic completely integrable system. In the discrete setting, the latter… ▽ More

A family of integrable maps associated with the Volterra lattice
Abstract: Recently Gubbiotti, Joshi, Tran and Viallet classified birational maps in four dimensions admitting two invariants (first integrals) with a particular degree structure, by considering recurrences of fourth order with a certain symmetry. The last three of the maps so obtained were shown to be Liouville integrable, in the sense of admitting a non-degenerate Poisson bracket with two first integrals i… ▽ More

Critical curves of rotations
Abstract: In rotations with a binary symbolic dynamics, a critical curve is the locus of parameters for which the boundaries of the partition that defines the symbolic dynamics are connected via a prescribed number of iterations and symbolic itinerary. We study the arithmetical and geometrical properties of these curves in parameter space.

Critical curves of a piecewise linear map
Abstract: We study the parameter space of a family of planar maps, which are linear on each of the right and left half-planes. We consider the set of parameters for which every orbit recurs to the boundary between half-planes. These parameters consist of algebraic curves, determined by the symbolic dynamics of the itinerary that connects boundary points. We study the algebraic and geometrical properties of… ▽ More

Poisson structures for difference equations
Abstract: We study the existence of log-canonical Poisson structures that are preserved by difference equations of special form. We also study the inverse problem, given a log-canonical Poisson structure to find a difference equation preserving this structure. We give examples of quadratic Poisson structures that arise for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) type maps which follow from a travelling-wave reducti… ▽ More

Algebraic entropy of (integrable) lattice equations and their reductions
Abstract: We study the growth of degrees in many autonomous and non-autonomous lattice equations defined by quad rules with corner boundary values, some of which are known to be integrable by other characterisations. Subject to an enabling conjecture, we prove polynomial growth for a large class of equations which includes the Adler-Bobenko-Suris equations and Viallet's $Q_V$ and its non-autonomous generali… ▽ More

Linear degree growth in lattice equations
Abstract: We conjecture recurrence relations satisfied by the degrees of some linearizable lattice equations. This helps to prove linear growth of these equations. We then use these recurrences to search for lattice equations that have linear growth and hence are linearizable.

Growth of heights in piecewise-affine planar maps
Abstract: We consider the growth of heights of the points of the orbits of (piecewise) affine maps of the plane, with rational parameters. We analyse the asymptotic growth rate of both global and local ($p$-adic) heights, for the primes $p$ that divide the parameters. We show that almost all the points in a domain of linearity (such as an elliptic island in an area-preserving map) have the same exponential… ▽ More

Orbit structure and (reversing) symmetries of toral endomorphisms on rational lattices
Abstract: We study various aspects of the dynamics induced by integer matrices on the invariant rational lattices of the torus in dimension 2 and greater. Firstly, we investigate the orbit structure when the toral endomorphism is not invertible on the lattice, characterising the pretails of eventually periodic orbits. Next we study the nature of the symmetries and reversing symmetries of toral automorphisms… ▽ More

A combinatorial model for reversible rational maps over finite fields
Abstract: We study time-reversal symmetry in dynamical systems with finite phase space, with applications to birational maps reduced over finite fields. For a polynomial automorphism with a single family of reversing symmetries, a universal (i.e., map-independent) distribution function R(x)=1-e^{-x}(1+x) has been conjectured to exist, for the normalized cycle lengths of the reduced map in the large field… ▽ More

Periodic orbits of linear endomorphisms on the 2-torus and its lattices
Abstract: Counting periodic orbits of endomorphisms on the 2-torus is considered, with special focus on the relation between global and local aspects and between the dynamical zeta function on the torus and its analogue on finite lattices. The situation on the lattices, up to local conjugacy, is completely determined by the determinant, the trace and a third invariant of the matrix defining the toral endo… ▽ More

Symmetries and reversing symmetries of polynomial automorphisms of the plane
Abstract: The polynomial automorphisms of the affine plane over a field K form a group which has the structure of an amalgamated free product. This well-known algebraic structure can be used to determine some key results about the symmetry and reversing symmetry groups of a given polynomial automorphism.

Symmetries and reversing symmetries of area-preserving polynomial map**s in generalised standard form
Abstract: We determine the symmetries and reversing symmetries within G, the group of real planar polynomial automorphisms, of area-preserving nonlinear polynomial maps L in generalised standard form, L: x'=x+p(y), y'=y+q(x'), where p and q are polynomials. We do this by using the amalgamated free product structure of G. Our results lead to normal forms for polynomial maps in generalised standard form and… ▽ More

Symmetries and reversing symmetries of toral automorphisms
Abstract: Toral automorphisms, represented by unimodular integer matrices, are investigated with respect to their symmetries and reversing symmetries. We characterize the symmetry groups of GL(n,Z) matrices with simple spectrum through their connection with unit groups in orders of algebraic number fields. For the question of reversibility, we derive necessary conditions in terms of the characteristic pol… ▽ More

Symmetries and reversing symmetries of trace maps
Abstract: A (discrete) dynamical system may have various symmetries and reversing symmetries, which together form its so-called reversing symmetry group. We study the set of 3D trace maps (obtained from two-letter substitution rules) which preserve the Fricke-Vogt invariant I(x,y,z). This set of dynamical systems forms a group G isomorphic with the projective linear (or modular) group PGL(2,Z). For such t… ▽ More
