The experimental results on the ratios of branching fractions $\mathcal{R}(D) = {\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D τ^- \barν_τ)/{\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D \ell^- \barν_{\ell})$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^*) = {\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D^* τ^- \barν_τ)/{\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D^* \ell^- \barν_{\ell})$, where $\ell$ denotes an electron or a muon, show a long-standing discrepancy with the Standard Model predictions, and might hint to a violation of lepton flavor universality. We report a new simultaneous measurement of $\mathcal{R}(D)$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^*)$, based on a data sample containing $772 \times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ events recorded at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. In this analysis the tag-side $B$ meson is reconstructed in a semileptonic decay mode and the signal-side $τ$ is reconstructed in a purely leptonic decay. The measured values are $\mathcal{R}(D)= 0.307 \pm 0.037 \pm 0.016$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^*) = 0.283 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.014$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions within $0.2$, $1.1$ and $0.8$ standard deviations for $\mathcal{R}(D)$, $\mathcal{R}(D^*)$ and their combination, respectively. This work constitutes the most precise measurements of $\mathcal{R}(D)$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^*)$ performed to date as well as the first result for $\mathcal{R}(D)$ based on a semileptonic tagging method.

This analysis is based on the full Belle data set of $772\times 10^{6}$ $B\overline{B}$ events collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance. We obtain $φ_3 = (5.7~^{+10.2}_{-8.8} \pm 3.5 \pm 5.7)^{\circ}$ and the suppressed amplitude ratio $r_{B} = 0.323 \pm 0.147 \pm 0.023 \pm 0.051$. Here the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic, and the third is due to the precision of the strong-phase parameters measured from CLEO-c data. The 95% confidence interval on $φ_3$ is $(-29.7,~109.5)^{\circ}$, which is consistent with the current world average.

The global significance of the new structure including systematic uncertainty is 5.2 standard deviations. We also find evidence for the $e^+e^-\toΥ(1S)π^+π^-$ process at the energy 10.52 GeV, which is below the $B\bar{B}$ threshold.

We present the first measurements of the absolute branching fractions of $Ξ_c^+$ decays into $Ξ^- π^+ π^+$ and $p K^- π^+$ final states. Our analysis is based on a data set of $(772\pm 11)\times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. We measure the absolute branching fraction of $\bar{B}^{0} \to \barΛ_{c}^{-} Ξ_{c}^{+}$ with the $Ξ_c^+$ recoiling against $\barΛ_c^-$ in $\bar{B}^0$ decays resulting in ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to \barΛ_{c}^{-} Ξ_{c}^{+}) = [1.16 \pm 0.42(\rm stat.) \pm 0.15(\rm syst.)] \times 10^{-3}$. We then measure the product branching fractions ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to \barΛ_c^- Ξ_c^+){\cal B}(Ξ_c^+ \to Ξ^- π^+ π^+)$ and ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to \barΛ_c^- Ξ_c^+){\cal B}(Ξ_c^+ \to p K^- π^+)$. Dividing these product branching fractions by $\bar{B}^{0} \to \barΛ_{c}^{-} Ξ_{c}^{+}$ yields: ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^+ \to Ξ^- π^+ π^+) = [2.86 \pm 1.21(\rm stat.) \pm 0.38(\rm syst.)]\%$ and ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^+ \to p K^- π^+)=[0.45 \pm 0.21(\rm stat.) \pm 0.07(\rm syst.)]\%$. Our result for ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^+ \to Ξ^- π^+ π^+)$ can be combined with $Ξ_c^+$ branching fractions measured relative to $Ξ_c^+ \to Ξ^- π^+ π^+$ to set the absolute scale for many $Ξ_c^+$ branching fractions.

In addition, a study of the $p \bar{p} π^+ π^-$ invariant mass distribution in the channel $B^+ \to (p \bar{p} π^+ π^-) K^+$ results in the first observation of the decay $η_c(2S) \to p \bar{p} π^+ π^-$ with $12.1σ$ significance. The analysis is based on the 711 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ data sample collected by the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider KEKB at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance.

Deep generative models are becoming a cornerstone of modern machine learning. Recent work on conditional generative adversarial networks has shown that learning complex, high-dimensional distributions over natural images is within reach. While the latest models are able to generate high-fidelity, diverse natural images at high resolution, they rely on a vast quantity of labeled data. In this work we demonstrate how one can benefit from recent work on self- and semi-supervised learning to outperform the state of the art on both unsupervised ImageNet synthesis, as well as in the conditional setting. In particular, the proposed approach is able to match the sample quality (as measured by FID) of the current state-of-the-art conditional model BigGAN on ImageNet using only 10% of the labels and outperform it using 20% of the labels.

We present a particle vertex fitting method designed for B factories. The presented method uses a Kalman Filter to solve a least squares estimate to globally fit decay chains, as opposed to traditional methods that fit each vertex at a time. It allows for the extraction of particle momenta, energies, vertex positions and flight lengths, as well as the uncertainty estimates of these quantities. Furthermore, it allows for the precise extraction of vertex parameters in complex decay chains containing neutral final state particles, such as $γ$ or $K^0_L$ , which cannot properly be tracked due to limited spatial resolution of longitudinally segmented single-layer crystal calorimeters like the Belle II ECL. The presented technique can be used to suppress combinatorial background and improve resolutions on measured parameters. We present studies using Monte Carlo simulations of collisions in the Belle II experiment, where modes with neutrals are crucial to the physics analysis program.

Conditional GANs are at the forefront of natural image synthesis. The main drawback of such models is the necessity for labeled data. In this work we exploit two popular unsupervised learning techniques, adversarial training and self-supervision, and take a step towards bridging the gap between conditional and unconditional GANs. In particular, we allow the networks to collaborate on the task of representation learning, while being adversarial with respect to the classic GAN game. The role of self-supervision is to encourage the discriminator to learn meaningful feature representations which are not forgotten during training. We test empirically both the quality of the learned image representations, and the quality of the synthesized images. Under the same conditions, the self-supervised GAN attains a similar performance to state-of-the-art conditional counterparts. Finally, we show that this approach to fully unsupervised learning can be scaled to attain an FID of 23.4 on unconditional ImageNet generation.

We present the result of the search for the rare $B$ meson decay of $B^+ \to \ell^{\,+} ν_{\ell} γ$ with $\ell =e,μ$. For the search the full data set recorded by the Belle experiment of $711 \, \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ integrated luminosity near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance is used. Signal candidates are reconstructed for photon energies $E_γ$ larger than $1 \, \mathrm{GeV}$ using a novel multivariate tagging algorithm. The novel algorithm fully reconstructs the second $B$ meson produced in the collision using hadronic modes and was specifically trained to recognize the signal signature in combination with hadronic tag-side $B$ meson decays. This approach greatly enhances the performance. Background processes that can mimic this signature, mainly charmless semileptonic decays and continuum processes, are suppressed using multivariate methods. The number of signal candidates is determined by analyzing the missing mass squared distribution as inferred from the signal side particles and the kinematic properties of the tag-side $B$ meson. No significant excess over the background-only hypothesis is observed and upper limits on the partial branching fraction $ Δ\mathcal{B} $ with $E_γ> 1 \, \mathrm{GeV}$ individually for electron and muon final states as well as for the average branching fraction of both lepton final states are reported. We find a Bayesian upper limit of $Δ\mathcal{B}( B^{+} \to \ell^{\, +} ν_{\ell} γ) < 3.0 \times 10^{-6}$ at 90% CL and also report an upper limit on the first inverse moment of the light-cone distribution amplitude of the $B$ meson of $λ_B$ at 90% CL.

We search for events produced via the dipion transition $Υ(\textrm{2S})\rightarrowΥ(\textrm{1S})π^{+}π^{-}$, followed by the on-shell process $Υ(\textrm{1S})\rightarrowγA^{0}$ with $A^{0} \rightarrowχχ$, or by the off-shell process $Υ(\textrm{1S})\rightarrowγχχ$. Utilizing a data sample of 157.3 $\times$ 10$^{6}$ $Υ(\textrm{2S})$ decays, we find no evidence for a signal. We set limits on the branching fractions of such processes in the mass ranges $M_{A^{0}} <$ 8.97 $\textrm{GeV/}\textit{c}^{2}$ and $M_χ <$ 4.44 $\textrm{GeV/}\textit{c}^{2}$. We then use the limits on the off-shell process to set competitive limits on WIMP-nucleon scattering in the WIMP mass range below 5 $\textrm{GeV/}\textit{c}^{2}$.

We present the physics program of the Belle II experiment, located on the intensity frontier SuperKEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. Belle II collected its first collisions in 2018, and is expected to operate for the next decade. It is anticipated to collect 50/ab of collision data over its lifetime. This book is the outcome of a joint effort of Belle II collaborators and theorists through the Belle II theory interface platform (B2TiP), an effort that commenced in 2014. The aim of B2TiP was to elucidate the potential impacts of the Belle II program, which includes a wide scope of physics topics: B physics, charm, tau, quarkonium, electroweak precision measurements and dark sector searches. It is composed of nine working groups (WGs), which are coordinated by teams of theorist and experimentalists conveners: Semileptonic and leptonic B decays, Radiative and Electroweak penguins, phi_1 and phi_2 (time-dependent CP violation) measurements, phi_3 measurements, Charmless hadronic B decay, Charm, Quarkonium(like), tau and low-multiplicity processes, new physics and global fit analyses. This book highlights "golden- and silver-channels", i.e. those that would have the highest potential impact in the field. Theorists scrutinised the role of those measurements and estimated the respective theoretical uncertainties, achievable now as well as prospects for the future. Experimentalists investigated the expected improvements with the large dataset expected from Belle II, taking into account improved performance from the upgraded detector.

The Full Event Interpretation is presented: a new exclusive tagging algorithm used by the high-energy physics experiment Belle II. The experimental setup of Belle II allows the precise measurement of otherwise inaccessible $B$ meson decay-modes. The Full Event Interpretation algorithm enables many of these measurements. The algorithm relies on machine learning to automatically identify plausible $B$ meson decay chains based on the data recorded by the detector. Compared to similar algorithms employed by previous experiments, the Full Event Interpretation provides a greater efficiency, yielding a larger effective sample size usable in the measurement.

We report measurements of isospin asymmetry $Δ_{0-}$ and difference of direct $CP$ asymmetries $ΔA_{CP}$ between charged and neutral $B \to X_s γ$ decays. This analysis is based on the data sample containing $772 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs that was collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB energy-asymmetric $e^+ e^-$ collider. Using a sum-of-exclusive technique with invariant $X_s$ mass up to 2.8~GeV/$c^2$, we obtain $Δ_{0-} = \bigl[-0.48 \pm 1.49 {\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.97 {\rm (syst.)} \pm 1.15 {(f_{+-}/f_{00})}\bigr]$\% and $ΔA_{CP} = \bigl[+3.69 \pm 2.65 {\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.76{\rm (syst.)}\bigr]$\%, where the last uncertainty for $Δ_{0-}$ is due to the uncertainty on the production ratio of $B^+B^-$ to $B^0\bar{B}^0$ in $Υ(4S)$ decays. The measured value of $Δ_{0-}$ is consistent with zero, allowing us to constrain the resolved photon contribution in the $B \to X_s γ$, and improve the branching fraction prediction. The result for $ΔA_{CP}$ is consistent with the prediction of the SM. We also measure the direct $CP$ asymmetries for charged and neutral $B \to X_s γ$ decays. All the measurements are the most precise to date.

The analysis is performed with a combination of the final data sets of the \babar\ and Belle experiments containing $471 \times 10^{6}$ and $772 \times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ\left(4S\right)$ resonance at the asymmetric-energy B factories PEP-II at SLAC and KEKB at KEK, respectively. We measure $\sin{2β} = 0.80 \pm 0.14 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 0.06 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.03 \,(\rm{model})$ and $\cos{2β} = 0.91 \pm 0.22 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 0.09 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.07 \,(\rm{model})$. The result for the direct measurement of the angle is $β= \left( 22.5 \pm 4.4 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 1.2 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.6 \,(\rm{model}) \right)^{\circ}$. The last quoted uncertainties are due to the composition of the $D^{0} \to K_{S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-}$ decay amplitude model, which is newly established by a Dalitz plot amplitude analysis of a high-statistics $e^{+}e^{-} \to c\bar{c}$ data sample as part of this analysis. We find the first evidence for $\cos2β>0$ at the level of $3.7$ standard deviations. The measurement excludes the trigonometric multifold solution $π/2 - β= (68.1 \pm 0.7)^{\circ}$ at the level of $7.3$ standard deviations and therefore resolves an ambiguity in the determination of the apex of the CKM Unitarity Triangle. The hypothesis of $β= 0^{\circ}$ is ruled out at the level of $5.1$ standard deviations, and thus CP violation is observed in $B^{0} \to D^{(*)} h^{0}$ decays.

We present first evidence that the cosine of the CP-violating weak phase $2β$ is positive, and hence exclude trigonometric multifold solutions of the CKM Unitarity Triangle using a time-dependent Dalitz plot analysis of $B^{0} \to D^{(*)} h^{0}$ with $D \to K_{S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-}$ decays, where $h^{0} \in \{π^{0}, η, ω\}$ denotes a light unflavored and neutral hadron. The measurement is performed combining the final data sets of the BaBar and Belle experiments collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance at the asymmetric-energy B factories PEP-II at SLAC and KEKB at KEK, respectively. The data samples contain $( 471 \pm 3 )\times 10^6\, B\bar{B}$ pairs recorded by the BaBar detector and $( 772 \pm 11 )\times 10^6\, B\bar{B}$ pairs recorded by the Belle detector. The results of the measurement are $\sin{2β} = 0.80 \pm 0.14 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 0.06 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.03 \,(\rm{model})$ and $\cos{2β} = 0.91 \pm 0.22 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 0.09 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.07 \,(\rm{model})$. The result for the direct measurement of the angle $β$ of the CKM Unitarity Triangle is $β= \left( 22.5 \pm 4.4 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 1.2 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.6 \,(\rm{model}) \right)^{\circ}$. CP violation is observed in $B^{0} \to D^{(*)} h^{0}$ decays at the level of $5.1$ standard deviations. The significance for $\cos{2β}>0$ is $3.7$ standard deviations. The trigonometric multifold solution $π/2 - β= (68.1 \pm 0.7)^{\circ}$ is excluded at the level of $7.3$ standard deviations. At the heart of experimental high energy physics (HEP) is the development of facilities and instrumentation that provide sensitivity to new phenomena. Our understanding of nature at its most fundamental level is advanced through the analysis and interpretation of data from sophisticated detectors in HEP experiments. The goal of data analysis systems is to realize the maximum possible scientific potential of the data within the constraints of computing and human resources in the least time. To achieve this goal, future analysis systems should empower physicists to access the data with a high level of interactivity, reproducibility and throughput capability. As part of the HEP Software Foundation Community White Paper process, a working group on Data Analysis and Interpretation was formed to assess the challenges and opportunities in HEP data analysis and develop a roadmap for activities in this area over the next decade. In this report, the key findings and recommendations of the Data Analysis and Interpretation Working Group are presented.

The tagging $B$ meson in the decay is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode. On the signal side, we reconstruct the decay $B \rightarrow D^{(*)}π\ellν$ $(\ell=e,μ)$. The measured branching fractions are $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \rightarrow D^-π^+ \ell^+ν)$ = [4.55 $\pm$ 0.27 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.39 (syst.)]$\times 10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \rightarrow \bar{D}^0π^- \ell^+ν)$ = [4.05 $\pm$ 0.36 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.41 (syst.)]$\times 10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \rightarrow D^{*-}π^+ \ell^+ν)$ = [6.03 $\pm$ 0.43 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.38 (syst.)]$\times 10^{-3}$, and $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \rightarrow \bar{D}^{*0}π^- \ell^+ν)$ = [6.46 $\pm$ 0.53 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.52 (syst.)]$\times 10^{-3}$. These are in good agreement with the current world average values.

The High Energy Phyiscs community has developed and needs to maintain many tens of millions of lines of code and to integrate effectively the work of thousands of developers across large collaborations. Software needs to be built, validated, and deployed across hundreds of sites. Software also has a lifetime of many years, frequently beyond that of the original developer, it must be developed with sustainability in mind. Adequate recognition of software development as a critical task in the HEP community needs to be fostered and an appropriate publication and citation strategy needs to be developed. As part of the HEP Softare Foundation's Community White Paper process a working group on Software Development, Deployment and Validation was formed to examine all of these issues, identify best practice and to formulare recommendations for the next decade. Particle physics has an ambitious and broad experimental programme for the coming decades. This programme requires large investments in detector hardware, either to build new facilities and experiments, or to upgrade existing ones. Similarly, it requires commensurate investment in the R&D of software to acquire, manage, process, and analyse the shear amounts of data to be recorded. In planning for the HL-LHC in particular, it is critical that all of the collaborating stakeholders agree on the software goals and priorities, and that the efforts complement each other. In this spirit, this white paper describes the R&D activities required to prepare for this software upgrade.

The signal events are selected based on the presence of a high momentum muon and the topology of the rest of the event showing properties of a generic $B$-meson decay, as well as the missing energy and momentum being consistent with the hypothesis of a neutrino from the signal decay. We find a 2.4 standard deviation excess above background including systematic uncertainties, which corresponds to a branching fraction of ${\cal B}(B^{-}\toμ^{-}\barν_μ) =(6.46 \pm 2.22 \pm 1.60 )\times10^{-7}$ or a frequentist 90% confidence level interval on the $B^{-}\toμ^{-}\barν_μ$ branching fraction of $[2.9, 10.7]\times 10^{-7}$. This result is obtained from a $711\ \text{fb}^{-1}$ data sample that contains $772 \times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs, collected near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider.

These results are based on a data sample of 759 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. For the first time, the transition form factor of the $f_2'(1525)$ meson is measured separately for the helicity-0, -1, and -2 components and also compared with theoretical calculations. Finally, the partial decay widths of the $χ_{c0}$ and $χ_{c2}$ mesons are measured as a function of $Q^2$.
