We present the final public data release of the VLT/ISAAC near-infrared imaging survey in the GOODS-South field. The survey covers an area of 172.5, 159.6 and 173.1 arcmin^2 in the J, H, and Ks bands, respectively. For point sources total limiting magnitudes of J=25.0, H=24.5, and Ks=24.4 (5 sigma, AB) are reached within 75% of the survey area. Thus these observations are significantly deeper than the previous EIS Deep Public Survey which covers the same region. The image quality is characterized by a point spread function ranging between 0.34 arcsec and 0.65 arcsec FWHM. The images are registered with an accuracy of ~0.06 arcsec RMS over the whole field. The overall photometric accuracy, including all systematic effects, adds up to 0.05 mag. The data are publicly available from the ESO science archive facility. We define a catalog of Ks-selected sources which contains JHKs photometry for 7079 objects. We briefly discuss the resulting color distributions in the context of available redshift data. Furthermore, we estimate the completeness fraction and relative contamination due to spurious detections for source catalogs extracted from the survey data. With respect to previous deep near-infrared surveys, the surface density of faint galaxies has been established with unprecedented accuracy by virtue of the unique combination of depth and area of this survey. We derived galaxy number counts over eight magnitudes in flux up to J=25.25, H=25.0, Ks=25.25 (in the AB system). Very similar faint-end logarithmic slopes between 0.24 and 0.27 per mag were measured in the three bands. We found no evidence for a significant change in the slope of the logarithmic galaxy number counts at the faint end.

XMMU J1229+0151 is a rich galaxy cluster with redshift z=0.975, that was serendipitously detected in X-rays within the scope of the XMM-Newton Distant Cluster Project. HST/ACS observations in the i775 and z850 passbands, as well as VLT/FORS2 spectroscopy were further obtained, in addition to follow-up Near-Infrared (NIR) imaging in J- and Ks-bands with NTT/SOFI. We investigate the photometric, structural and spectral properties of the early-type galaxies in the high-redshift cluster XMMU J1229+0151. Source detection and aperture photometry are performed in the optical and NIR imaging. Galaxy morphology is inspected visually and by means of Sersic profile fitting to the 21 spectroscopically confirmed cluster members in the ACS field of view. The i775-z850 colour-magnitude relation (CMR) is derived with a method based on galaxy magnitudes obtained by fitting the surface brightness of the galaxies with Sersic models. The i775-z850 CMR of the spectroscopic members shows a very tight red-sequence with a zero point of 0.86+-0.04 mag and intrinsic scatter equal to 0.039 mag. The CMR obtained with the galaxy models has similar parameters. Stellar masses and formation ages of the cluster galaxies are derived by fitting the observed spectral energy distributions (SED) with models based on Bruzual & Charlot 2003. We obtain a star formation weighted age of 4.3 Gyr for a median mass of 7.4e10 Msun. Instead of an unambiguous brightest cluster galaxy (BCG), we find three bright galaxies with a similar z850 magnitude, which are, in addition, the most massive cluster members, with ~ 2e11 Msun. Our results strengthen the current evidence for a lack of significant evolution of the scatter and slope of the red-sequence out to z~1.

This paper presents infrared data obtained from observations carried out at the ESO 3.5m New Technology Telescope (NTT) of the Hubble Deep Field South (HDF-S) and the Chandra Deep Field South (CDF-S). These data were taken as part of the ESO Imaging Survey (EIS) program, a public survey conducted by ESO to promote follow-up observations with the VLT. In the HDF-S field the infrared observations cover an area of ~53 square arcmin, encompassing the HST WFPC2 and STIS fields, in the JHKs passbands. The seeing measured in the final stacked images ranges from 0.79" to 1.22" and the median limiting magnitudes (AB system, 2" aperture, 5sigma detection limit) are J_AB~23.0, H_AB~22.8 and K_AB~23.0 mag. Less complete data are also available in JKs for the adjacent HST NICMOS field. For CDF-S, the infrared observations cover a total area of \~100 square arcmin, reaching median limiting magnitudes (as defined above) of J_AB~23.6 and K_AB~22.7 mag. For one CDF-S field H-band data are also available. This paper describes the observations and presents the results of new reductions carried out entirely through the un-supervised, high-throughput EIS Data Reduction System and its associated EIS/MVM C++-based image processing library developed, over the past 5 years, by the EIS project and now publicly available. The paper also presents source catalogs extracted from the final co-added images which are used to evaluate the scientific quality of the survey products, and hence the performance of the software. This is done comparing the results obtained in the present work with those obtained by other authors from independent data and/or reductions carried out with different software packages and techniques. The final science-grade catalogs and co-added images are available at CDS.

(Abridged) This paper presents the data recently released for the XMM-Newton/WFI survey carried out as part of the ESO Imaging Survey (EIS) project. The aim of this survey is to provide optical imaging follow-up data in BVRI for identification of serendipitously detected X-ray sources in selected XMM-Newton fields. In this paper, fully calibrated individual and stacked images of 12 fields as well as science-grade catalogs for the 8 fields located at high-galactic latitude are presented. The data covers an area of \sim 3 square degrees for each of the four passbands. The median limiting magnitudes (AB system, 2" aperture, 5σdetection limit) are 25.20, 24.92, 24.66, and 24.39 mag for B-, V-, R-, and I-band, respectively. These survey products, together with their logs, are available to the community for science exploitation in conjunction with their X-ray counterparts. Preliminary results from the X-ray/optical cross-correlation analysis show that about 61% of the detected X-ray point sources in deep XMM-Newton exposures have at least one optical counterpart within 2" radius down to R \simeq 25 mag, 50% of which are so faint as to require VLT observations thereby meeting one of the top requirements of the survey, namely to produce large samples for spectroscopic follow-up with the VLT, whereas only 15% of the objects have counterparts down to the DSS limiting magnitude.

We present central velocity dispersions and Mg$_2$ line indices for an all-sky sample of $\sim$ 1178 elliptical and S0 galaxies, of which 984 had no previous measures. This sample contains the largest set of homogeneous spectroscopic data for a uniform sample of elliptical galaxies in the nearby universe. These galaxies were observed as part of the ENEAR project, designed to study the peculiar motions and internal properties of the local early-type galaxies. Using 523 repeated observations of 317 galaxies obtained during different runs, the data are brought to a common zero-point. These multiple observations, taken during the many runs and different instrumental setups employed for this project, are used to derive statistical corrections to the data and are found to be relatively small, typically $\lsim$ 5% of the velocity dispersion and 0.01 mag in the \mg line-strength. Typical errors are about 8% in velocity dispersion and 0.01 mag in \mg, in good agreement with values published elsewhere.

A scheme is presented to select point sources from these catalogues, by combining the SExtractor parameter CLASS_STAR from all available passbands.
Probable QSOs and unresolved galaxies are identified by using the previously developed χ^2-technique (Hatziminaoglou et al 2002), that fits the overall spectral energy distributions to template spectra and determines the best fitting template.
The observed number counts, colour-magnitude diagrams, colour-colour diagrams and colour distributions are presented and, to judge the quality of the data, compared to simulations based on the predictions of a Galactic Model convolved with the estimated completeness functions and the error model used to describe the photometric errors of the data.
The resulting stellar catalogues and the objects identified as likely QSOs and unresolved galaxies with coordinates, observed magnitudes with errors and assigned spectral types by the $χ^2$-technique are presented and are publicly available.

In this paper R-band photometric and velocity dispersion measurements for a sample of 452 elliptical and S0 galaxies in 28 clusters are used to construct a template D_n-sigma relation. This template relation is constructed by combining the data from the 28 clusters, under the assumption that galaxies in different clusters have similar properties. The photometric and spectroscopic data used consist of new as well as published measurements, converted to a common system, as presented in a accompanying paper. The resulting direct relation, corrected for incompleteness bias, is log{D_n} =1.203 log{sigma} + 1.406; the zero-point has been defined by requiring distant clusters to be at rest relative to the CMB. This zero-point is consistent with the value obtained by using the distance to Virgo as determined by the Cepheid period-luminosity relation. This new D_n-sigma relation leads to a peculiar velocity of -72 (\pm 189) km/s for the Coma cluster. The scatter in the distance relation corresponds to a distance error of about 20%, comparable to the values obtained for the Fundamental Plane relation. Correlations between the scatter and residuals of the D_n-sigma relation with other parameters that characterize the cluster and/or the galaxy stellar population are also analyzed. The direct and inverse relations presented here have been used in recent studies of the peculiar velocity field mapped by the ENEAR all-sky sample.

The ENEARc galaxies belong to clusters and were specifically chosen to be used for the construction of a D_n-sigma template. The ENEARc sample includes new measurements of spectroscopic and photometric parameters (redshift, velocity dispersion, line index Mg_2, and the angular diameter d_n) as well as data from the literature. New spectroscopic data are given for 229 cluster early-type galaxies and new photometry is presented for 348 objects. Repeat and overlap observations with external data sets are used to construct a final merged catalog consisting of 640 early-type galaxies in 28 clusters. Objective criteria, based on catalogs of groups of galaxies derived from complete redshift surveys of the nearby universe, are used to assign galaxies to clusters. In a companion paper these data are used to construct the template D_n-sigma distance relation for early-type galaxies which has been used to estimate galaxy distances and derive peculiar velocities for the ENEAR all-sky sample.

This paper describes the methodology currently being implemented in the EIS pipeline for analysing optical/infrared multi-colour data. The aim is to identify different classes of objects as well as possible undesirable features associated with the construction of colour catalogues. The classification method used is based on the xi^2-fitting of template spectra to the observed SEDs, as measured through broad-band filters. Its main advantage is the simultaneous use of all colours, properly weighted by the photometric errors. In addition, it provides basic information on the properties of the classified objects (eg redshift, effective temperature). These characteristics make the xi^2-technique ideal for handling large multi-band datasets. The results are compared to the more traditional colour-colour selection and, whenever possible, to model predictions. In order to identify objects with odd colours, either associated with rare populations or to possible problems in the catalogue, outliers are searched for in the multi-dimensional colour space using a nearest-neighbour criterion. Outliers with large xi^2-values are individually inspected to further investigate their nature. The tools developed are used for a preliminary analysis of the multi-colour point source catalogue constructed from the optical/infrared imaging data obtained for the Chandra Deep Field South (CDF-S). These data are publicly available, representing the first installment of the ongoing EIS Deep Public Survey.

We analyze new measurements of the Mg_2 central line strength index and velocity dispersion (sigma) for the galaxies of the ENEAR survey. The observations are now complete (da Costa et al. 2000) and the sample contains 1223 early-type galaxies. We also analyze the line strength indices for a sample of 95 spiral bulges (from Sa to Sbc). For the early-type galaxies we find: i) that the Mg_2-sigma relation for Es and S0s are nearly the same, with both populations showing comparable scatter, and ii) a marginal difference in the slope of the Mg_2-sigma relation for cluster and field early-type galaxies. However, we suggest that before interpreting such a difference in the framework of a mass-metallicity relation, it is important to take into account the effects of rotation in the Mg_2-sigma relation. Our preliminary results indicate that once the rotation effects are minimized by choosing a sample containing only slow rotators, the Mg_2-sigma relation is similar both for isolated and clustered galaxies. More data on rotational velocities of early-type galaxies are needed to confirm this result. For spiral bulges, we find that their locus in the Mg_2-sigma plane lies always below the one occupied by early-type galaxies.

The ENEAR project is an all-sky survey of nearby early-type galaxies. About 2200 new spectra and R-band images of over 1500 galaxies together with published data were assembled into a large catalog containing over 2000 objects with cz, sigma, photometric data, and line strengths on a uniform system. From this extensive database a magnitude-limited sample has been drawn comprising ~ 1400 galaxies brighter than m_B = 14.5, cz < 7000 km/s, and type T -2 or less with measured distances (ENEARf) and about 500 early-type galaxies in 28 clusters/groups (ENEARc) to derive an internally consistent D_n-sigma relation to estimate galaxy distances. In this contribution we discuss some general properties of ENEAR and briefly describe some preliminary results.

Using new observations for a sample of 931 early-type galaxies we investigate whether the \mg2--\so relation shows any dependence on the local environment. The galaxies have been assigned to three different environments depending on the local overdensity: clusters, groups, and field, having used our completeredshift database to guide the assignment of galaxies. It is found that cluster, group and field early-type galaxies follow almost identical \mg2--\so\ relations, with the largest \mg2 zero-point difference (clusters minus field) being only $0.007\pm 0.002$ mag. No correlation of the residuals is found with the morphological type or the bulge to disk ratio. Using stellar population models in a differential fashion, this small zero-point difference implies a luminosity-weighted age difference of only $\sim 1$ Gyr between the corresponding stellar populations, with field galaxies being younger. The mass-weighted age difference could be significantly smaller, if minor events of late star formation took place preferentially in field galaxies. We combine these results with the existing evidence for the bulk of stars in cluster early-type galaxies having formed at very high redshift, and conclude that the bulk of stars in galactic spheroids had to form at high redshifts ($z\gsim 3$), no matter whether such spheroids now reside in low or high density regions. The cosmological implications of these findings are briefly discussed.

We report redshifts, magnitudes and morphological classifications for 5369 galaxies with $m_B \leq 15.5$ and 57 galaxies fainter than this limit, in two regions covering a total of 1.70 steradians in the southern celestial hemisphere. The galaxy catalog is drawn primarily from the list of non-stellar objects identified in the Guide Star Catalog (Lasker et al. 1990, AJ 99, 2019; hereafter GSC). The galaxies have positions accurate to about 1 arc sec and magnitudes with an rms scatter of about 0.3 mag. We compute magnitudes ($m_{SSRS2}$) from the relation between instrumental GSC magnitudes and the photometry by Lauberts & Valentijn (1989). From a comparison with CCD photometry, we find that our system is homogeneous across the sky and corresponds to magnitudes measured at the isophotal level $\sim$ 26 mag arcsec$^{-2}$. The precision of the radial velocities is of \sim 40 km/s and the redshift survey is more than 99% complete to the $m_{SSRS2}$ = 15.5 magnitude limit. This sample is in the direction opposite to the CfA2; in combination the two surveys provide an important database for studies of the properties of galaxies and their large-scale distribution in the nearby Universe.

Abstract:
This paper contains a list of new AGN candidates identified from the examination of 3500 optical spectra contained in the database of the Southern Sky Redshift Survey Extension (SSRS2). The classification of galaxies was done using standard diagnostics and a total of (5) Seyfert 1, (12) Seyfert 2 and (10) LINERs were found.
