All biological organisms, from plants to living creatures, can heal minor wounds and damage. The realization of a similar self-healing capacity in inorganic materials has been a design target for many decades. This would represent a breakthrough in materials engineering, enabling many novel technological applications, since such materials would be able to resist damage caused by electromagnetic irradiation and/or mechanical impact. Here we demonstrate that a high-entropy oxide is intrinsically capable of undergoing an autonomous self-repairing process. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the spinel structure of (AlCoCrCu0.5FeNi)3O4 can regrow and repair itself at the atomic level when damaged. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the extra enthalpy stored in the high entropy material during fabrication can be released to effectively heal macroscopic defects by regrowing into a partially ordered state. This extraordinary self-repairing phenomenon makes this new material highly desirable as a coating, enabling structures used in harsh environments to better withstand damage, such as cosmic irradiation in space, nuclear irradiation in nuclear power facilities, or tribological damage. Most importantly, our results set the general design principles for the synthesis of self-repairing materials.

The Ni-based superalloy Alloy 718 is used in aircraft engines as high-pressure turbine discs and must endure challenging demands on high-temperature yield strength, creep-, and oxidation-resistance. Nanoscale $γ^{\prime}$- and $γ^{\prime \prime}$-precipitates commonly found in duplet and triplet co-precipitate morphologies provide high-temperature strength under these harsh operating conditions. Direct ageing of Alloy 718 is an attractive alternative manufacturing route known to increase the yield strength at 650 $^°$C by at least +10 $\%$, by both retaining high dislocation densities and changing the nanoscale co-precipitate morphology. However, the detailed nucleation and growth mechanisms of the duplet and triplet co-precipitate morphologies of $γ^{\prime}$ and $γ^{\prime \prime}$ during the direct ageing process remain unknown. We provide a correlative high-resolution microscopy approach using transmission electron microscopy, high-angle annular dark-field imaging, and atom probe microscopy to reveal the early stages of precipitation during direct ageing of Alloy 718. Quantitative stereological analyses of the $γ^{\prime}$- and $γ^{\prime \prime}$-precipitate dispersions as well as their chemical compositions have allowed us to propose a qualitative model of the microstructural evolution. It is shown that fine $γ^{\prime}$- and $γ^{\prime \prime}$-precipitates nucleate homogeneously and grow coherently. However, $γ^{\prime \prime}$-precipitates also nucleate heterogeneously on dislocations and experience accelerated growth due to Nb pipe diffusion. Moreover, the co-precipitation reactions are largely influenced by solute availability and the potential for enrichment of Nb and rejection of Al+Ti.

The electrons introduced by $Sb^{5+}$ localize on nearby Co ions creating $Co^{2+}$ species which are absent in undoped $Na_xCoO_2$. $Co^{2+}$ ions reduce the spin entropy flow decreasing the Seebeck coefficient in the Sb doped compounds. The results can be generalized to other dopants with high oxidation state.

In this study, solute clusters in a rapid-hardening Al-Cu-Mg alloy were characterised by a combination of atom probe tomography and density functional theory, making use of a hybrid data type that combines lattice rectification and data completion to directly input experimental data into atomistic simulations. The clusters input to the atomistic simulations are thus observed experimentally, reducing the number of possible configurations. Our results show that spheroidal, compact clusters are more energetically favourable and more abundant.

Here we present a study of magnetism in \CTO\ anatase films grown by pulsed laser deposition under a variety of oxygen partial pressures and deposition rates. Energy-dispersive spectrometry and transition electron microscopy analyses indicate that a high deposition rate leads to a homogeneous microstructure, while very low rate or postannealing results in cobalt clustering. Depth resolved low-energy muon spin rotation experiments show that films grown at a low oxygen partial pressure ($\approx 10^{-6}$ torr) with a uniform structure are fully magnetic, indicating intrinsic ferromagnetism. First principles calculations identify the beneficial role of low oxygen partial pressure in the realization of uniform carrier-mediated ferromagnetism. This work demonstrates that Co:TiO$_2$ is an intrinsic diluted magnetic semiconductor.

This article addresses gaps in definitions and a lack of standard measurement techniques to assess the spatial resolution in atom probe tomography. This resolution is known to be anisotropic, being better in the depth than laterally. Generally the presence of atomic planes in the tomographic reconstruction is considered as being a sufficient proof of the quality of the spatial resolution of the instrument. Based on advanced spatial distribution maps, an analysis methodology that interrogates the local neighborhood of the atoms within the tomographic reconstruction, it is shown how both the in-depth and the lateral resolution can be quantified. The influences of the crystallography and the temperature are investigated, and models are proposed to explain the observed results. We demonstrate that the absolute value of resolution is specimenspecific.

The application of wide field-of-view detection systems to atom probe experiments emphasizes the importance of careful parameter selection in the tomographic reconstruction of the analysed volume, as the sensitivity to errors rises steeply with increases in analysis dimensions. In this paper, a self-consistent method is presented for the systematic determination of the main reconstruction parameters. In the proposed approach, the compression factor and the field factor are determined using geometrical projections from the desorption images. A 3D Fourier transform is then applied to a series of reconstructions and, comparing to the known material crystallography, the efficiency of the detector is estimated. The final results demonstrate a significant improvement in the accuracy of the reconstructed volumes.

This approach, and those subsequently developed, assume that the geometric parameters used to build the three-dimensional atom map are constant over the course of an analysis. Here, we test this assumption within the analyses of low-alloyed materials. By building upon methods recently proposed to measure the tomographic reconstruction parameters, we demonstrate that this assumption can introduce significant limitations in the accuracy of the analysis. Moreover, we propose a strategy to alleviate this problem through the implementation of a new reconstruction algorithm that dynamically accommodates variations in the tomographic reconstruction parameters.

Recently, the perovskite BiCoO$_3$ has been shown experimentally to be isostructural with PbTiO$_3$, while simultaneously the $d^6$ Co$^{3+}$ ion has a high spin ground state with $C$-type antiferromagnetic ordering. Using hybrid density functional calculations, we investigate the atomic, electronic and magnetic structure of BiCoO$_3$ to elucidate the origin of the multiferroic state. To begin with, we perform a qualitative trend sudy of the role of $d$ electrons in affecting the tendency for perovskite materials to exhibit a ferroelectric distortion; this work initially explores a qualitative trend study in artificial cubic and tetragonal LaBO$_3$ perovskites. We choose La as the A-cation so as to remove the effects of Bi $6s$ hybridization. Through first-principles calculations of the LaBO$_3$ series, where B is a $d^0 - d^8$ cation from the $3d$-block, the trend study reveals that increasing the $d$ orbital occupation initially removes the tendency for a polar distortion, as expected. However, for high spin $d^5-d^7$ and $d^8$ cations a strong ferroelectric instability is recovered. We explained this effect in terms of the pseudo Jahn-Teller theory for ferroelectricity. It is shown that, in some cases, unpaired electron spins actually drive ferroelectricity, rather than inhibit it, which represents a shift in the understanding of how ferroelectricity and magnetism interact in perovskite oxides. It follows, that for the case of BiCoO$_3$, the Co$^{3+}$ ion plays a major role in the ferroelectric lattice instability. Importantly, the ferroelectric polarization is greatly enhanced when the Co$^{3+}$ ion is in the high spin state, when compared to the nonmagnetic, low spin state, and a large coupling of the electrical and magnetic polarization is present. Importantly, it is demonstrated that the ground spin state is switched by reducing the internal ferroelectric polarization.

A complete phase diagram and its corresponding physical properties are essential prerequisites to understand the underlying mechanism of iron based superconductivity. For the structurally simplest 11 (FeSeTe) system, earlier attempts using bulk samples have not been able to do so due to the fabrication difficulties. Here, thin FeSexTe1-x films with the Se content covering the full range were fabricated by using pulsed laser deposition method. Crystal structure analysis shows that all films retain the tetragonal structure in room temperature. Significantly, the highest superconducting transition temperature (TC = 20 K) occurs in the newly discovered domain, 0.6 - 0.8. The single-phased superconducting dome for the full Se do** range is the first of its kind in iron chalcogenide superconductors. A significant enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature (TC) up to 21K was observed in the most Fe deficient film (x=0.8). Based on the observed and simulated structural variation results, there is a high possibility that Fe vacancies can be formed in the FexSe0.5Te0.5 films. The enhancement of TC shows a strong relationship with the lattice strain effect induced by Fe vacancies. Importantly, the presence of Fe vacancies alters the charge carrier population by introducing electron charge carriers, with the Fe deficient film showing more metallic behavior than the defect-free film. Our study provides a means to enhance the superconductivity and tune the charge carriers via Fe vacancy, with no reliance on chemical do**.

Due to their graphene-like properties after oxygen reduction, incorporation of graphene oxide (GO) sheets into correlated-electron materials offers a new pathway for tailoring their properties. Fabricating GO nanocomposites with polycrystalline MgB2 superconductors leads to an order of magnitude enhancement of the supercurrent at 5 K/8 T and 20 K/4 T. Herein, we introduce a novel experimental approach to overcome the formidable challenge of performing quantitative microscopy and microanalysis of such composites, so as to unveil how GO do** influences the structure and hence the material properties. Atom probe microscopy and electron microscopy were used to directly image the GO within the MgB2, and we combined these data with computational simulations to derive the property-enhancing mechanisms. Our results reveal synergetic effects of GO, namely, via localized atomic (carbon and oxygen) do** as well as texturing of the crystals, which provide both inter and intra granular flux pinning. This study opens up new insights into how low-dimensional nanostructures can be integrated into composites to modify the overall properties, using a methodology amenable to a wide range of applications.

This work explains the occurrence of transformation-induced plasticity via stress-assisted martensite, when designing ultrafine-grained duplex steels. It is found that, when the austenite is reduced to a fine scale of about 300 nm, the initial deformation-induced microstructure can be dominated by parallel lamellae of epsilon martensite or mechanical twinning, which cannot efficiently provide nucleation sites for strain-induced martensite. Hence, alpha martensite nucleation occurs independently by a stress-assisted process that enhances transformation-induced plasticity in ultrafine-grained austenite. This metallurgical principle was validated experimentally by using a combination of transmission Kikuchi diffraction map**, transmission electron microscopy, and atom probe microscopy, and demonstrated theoretically by the thermodynamics model of stress-assisted martensite.

When a material is subjected to an applied stress, the material will experience recoverable elastic deformation followed by permanent plastic deformation at the point when the applied stress exceeds the yield stress of the material. Microscopically, the onset of the plasticity usually indicates the activation of dislocation motion, which is considered to be the primary mechanism of plastic deformation. Once plastic deformation is initiated, further elastic deformation is negligible owing to the limited increase in the flow stress caused by work hardening. Here we present experimental evidence and quantitative analysis of simultaneous development of significant elastic deformation and dislocation-based plastic deformation in single crystal GaAs nanowires (NWs) under bending deformation up to a total strain of ~ 6%. The observation is in sharp contrast to the previous notions regarding the deformation modes. Most of the plastic deformation recovers spontaneously when the external stress is released, and therefore resembles an elastic deformation process.

Electron do** through interstitial $Cu_{Int}$, however, does not have a similar effect as $Cu_{Int}$ dopant leaves the compound ferromagnetic, just like the case of the undoped compound. Imaging data revealed that cells were well adhered and spread on the surface of the superconductor. Furthermore, cytotoxicity studies showed that cells were unaffected during the time-course of the experiments, providing support for the biocompatibility aspects of PrOxFeAs-based superconductor material.

Strain engineering has been used to modify materials properties in ferroelectric, superconducting, and ferromagnetic thin films. The advantage of strain engineering is that it can achieve unexpected enhancement in certain properties, such as an increase in ferroelectric critical temperature, Tc, by 300 to 500K, with a minimum detrimental effect on the intrinsic properties of the material. The strain engineering has been largely applied to the materials in thin film form, where the strain is generated as a result of lattice mismatch between the substrate and component film or between layers in multilayer structures. Here, we report the observation of residual thermal stress/strain in dense SiC-MgB2 superconductor composites prepared by a diffusion method. We demonstrate that the thermal strain caused by the different thermal expansion coefficients between the MgB2 and SiC phases is responsible for the significant improvement in the critical current density, Jc, the irreversibility field, Hirr, and the upper critical field, Hc2, in the SiC-MgB2 composite where the carbon substitution level is low. In contrast to the common practice of improving the Jc and Hc2 of MgB2 through chemical substitution, by taking advantage of residual thermal strains we are able to design a composite, which shows only a small drop in Tc and little increase in resistivity, but a significant improvement over the Jc and Hc2 of MgB2. The present findings open up a new direction for manipulation of materials properties through strain engineering for materials in various forms.
