Large sub-Neptunes are uncommon around the coolest stars in the Galaxy and are rarer still around those that are metal-poor. However, owing to the large planet-to-star radius ratio, these planets are highly suitable for atmospheric study via transmission spectroscopy in the infrared, such as with JWST. Here we report the discovery and validation of a sub-Neptune orbiting the thick-disk, mid-M dwarf star TOI-2406. We first infer properties of the host star by analysing the star's near-infrared spectrum, spectral energy distribution, and Gaia parallax. We use multi-band photometry to confirm that the transit event is on-target and achromatic, and we statistically validate the TESS signal as a transiting exoplanet. We then determine physical properties of the planet through global transit modelling of the TESS and ground-based time-series data. We determine the host to be a metal-poor M4V star, located at a distance of 56 pc, with a sub-solar metallicity $(\mathrm{[Fe/H] = -0.38 \pm 0.07})$, and a member of the thick disk. The planet is a relatively large sub-Neptune for the M-dwarf planet population, with $\mathrm{R_p = 2.94 \pm 0.17} \mathrm{R_\oplus}$ and $\mathrm{P = 3.077}$ d, producing transits of 2% depth. We note the orbit has a non-zero eccentricity to 3$\mathrmσ$, prompting questions about the dynamical history of the system. This system is an interesting outcome of planet formation and presents a benchmark for large-planet formation around metal-poor, low-mass stars. The system warrants further study, in particular radial velocity follow-up to determine the planet mass and constrain possible bound companions. Furthermore, TOI-2406 b is a good target for future atmospheric study through transmission spectroscopy, particularly in the category of warm sub-Neptunes.

Water maser emitting planetary nebulae (H$_2$O-PNe) are believed to be among the youngest PNe. We present new optical narrow- and broad-band images, intermediate- and high-resolution long-slit spectra, and archival optical images of the H$_2$O-PN IRAS 18061--2505. It appears a pinched-waist bipolar PN consisting of knotty lobes with some point-symmetric regions, a bow-shock near the tip of each lobe, and a very compact inner nebula where five components are identified in the spectra by their kinematic and emission properties. The water masers most probably reside in an oxygen-rich ring tracing the equatorial region of the bipolar lobes. These two structures probably result from common envelope evolution plus several bipolar and non-bipolar collimated outflows that have distorted the lobes. The bow-shocks could be related to a previous phase to that of common envelope. The inner nebula may be attributed to a late or very late thermal pulse that occurred before 1951.6 when it was not detectable in the POSSI-Blue image. Chemical abundances and other properties favour a 3--4 M$_{\odot}$ progenitor, although if the common envelope phase accelerated the evolution of the central star, masses <1.5 M$_{\odot}$ cannot be discarded. The age of the bipolar lobes is incompatible with the existence of water masers in IRAS 18061--2505, which may have been lately reactivated through shocks in the oxygen-rich ring, that are generated by the thermal pulse, implying that this PN is not extremely young. We discuss H$_2$O-PNe and possibly related objects in the light of our results for IRAS 18061--2505.

The kinematics of the bipolar planetary nebulae Hb~5 and K 3-17 are investigated in detail by means of a comprehensive set of spatially resolved high spectral resolution, long-slit spectra. Both objects share particularly interesting characteristics, such as a complex filamentary, rosette-type nucleus, axial point-symmetry and very fast bipolar outflows. The kinematic information of Hb~5 is combined with {\it HST} imagery to construct a detailed 3D model of the nebula using the code SHAPE. The model shows that the large scale lobes are growing in a non-homologous way. The filamentary loops in the core are proven to actually be secondary lobes emerging from what appears to be a randomly punctured, dense, gaseous core and the material that forms the point symmetric structure flows within the lobes with a distinct kinematic pattern and its interaction with the lobes has had a sha** effect on them. Hb~5 and K~3-17 may represent a class of fast evolving planetary nebulae that will develop poly-polar characteristics once the nebular core evolves and expands.

The data are presented wavelength calibrated and corrected for heliocentric motion. For most objects multiple spectra have been acquired and images with accurate slit positions on the nebulae are also presented for each object. This is the most extensive and homogeneous single source of data concerning the internal kinematics of the ionized nebular material in planetary nebulae. Data can be retrieved for individual objects or selected by groups that share some common characteristics, such as by morphological classes, galactic population, binary cores, presence of fast outflows, etc. The catalogue is available through the world wide web at http://kincatpn.astrosen.unam.mx .

The data were acquired at the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional in the Sierra de San Pedro Mártir using the 2.1m telescope and the Manchester Echelle Spectrometer in the light of [\ion{O}{3}]$λ$5007 at a resolution of 11 km/s. A few objects were observed in H$α$. The internal kinematics of bright planetary nebulae do not depend strongly upon the metallicity or age of their progenitor stellar populations, though small systematic differences exist. The nebular kinematics and H$β$ luminosity require that the nebular shells be accelerated during the early evolution of their central stars. Thus, kinematics provides an additional argument favoring similar stellar progenitors for bright planetary nebulae in all galaxies.

We use the high signal-to-noise (S/N) observations of Milky Way bulge planetary nebulae to explore what kinematic information can be determined reliably when observing extragalactic planetary nebulae in the [\ion{O}{3}]$λ$5007 line at modest S/N. We find that the intrinsic line widths measured in [\ion{O}{3}]$λ$5007 and H$α$ are very similar. Over the range of S/N available in this sample, the line width we measure is independent of the S/N. Finally, deviations from a Gaussian line shape are small. Thus, the line width of the [\ion{O}{3}]$λ$5007 line in bright extragalactic planetary nebulae should reflect the kinematics of most of the mass in the ionized nebular shell.

We present a systematic study of line widths in the [\ion{O}{3}]$λ$5007 and H$α$ lines for a sample of 86 planetary nebulae in the Milky Way bulge based upon spectroscopy obtained at the \facility{Observatorio Astronómico Nacional in the Sierra San Pedro Mártir (OAN-SPM)} using the Manchester Echelle Spectrograph. The planetary nebulae were selected with the intention of simulating samples of bright extragalactic planetary nebulae. We separate the planetary nebulae into two samples containing cooler and hotter central stars, defined by the absence or presence, respectively, of the \ion{He}{2} $λ$6560 line in the H$α$ spectra. This division separates samples of younger and more evolved planetary nebulae. The sample of planetary nebulae with hotter central stars has systematically larger line widths, larger radii, lower electron densities, and lower H$β$ luminosities. The distributions of these parameters in the two samples all differ at significance levels exceeding 99%. These differences are all in agreement with the expectations from hydrodynamical models, but for the first time confirmed for a homogeneous and statistically significant sample of galactic planetary nebulae. We interpret these differences as evidence for the acceleration of the nebular shells during the early evolution of these intrinsically bright planetary nebulae. As is the case for planetary nebulae in the Magellanic Clouds, the acceleration of the nebular shells appears to be the direct result of the evolution of the central stars.

A detailed analysis is presented of the dominant ionised knot in the halo of the planetary nebula NGC 6543. Observations were made at high spectral and spatial resolution of the [OIII] 5007 line using the Manchester echelle spectrometer combined with the 2.1-m San Pedro Martir Telescope. A 20-element multislit was stepped across the field to give almost complete spatial coverage of the knot and surrounding halo. The spectra reveal, for the first time, gas flows around the kinematically inert knot. The gas flows are found to have velocities comparable to the sound speed as gas is photo-evaporated off an ionised surface. No evidence is found of fast wind interaction with the knot and we find it likely that the fast wind is still contained in a pressure-driven bubble in the core of the nebula. This rules out the possibility of the knot having its origin in instabilities at the interface of the fast and AGB winds. We suggest that the knot is embedded in the slowly expanding Red Giant wind and that its surfaces are being continually photoionised by the central star.
